-Signs, Portents, and the Weather-
UK faces 100,000 cases EVERY DAY by July as Indian Covid variant drives up infections by more than a third over last week to 7,738 and Boris Johnson is warned by ministers lockdown rules will remain until next spring
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
  • The PM all-but confirmed Freedom Day would be pushed back from June 20 to July 19 on Saturday

  • Cases continued to rise by more than a third over last week to 7,738 - second-highest daily figure since Feb.

  • Independent SAGE's Anthony Costello, of University College London, said the true daily infection figure was likely more than double the 8,000 recorded in tests

  • He said: 'In a month you'll be up to 100,000 new cases a day. If the Government takes a gamble and lets rip like Tory backbenchers want, the NHS will be overloaded. Let's wait. Let's stay as we are'

  • Tory ministers have warned Mr Johnson that a delay will leave a 'very short window to open up,' with further push-backs leading to a full reopening only next spring - after winter pressures on the NHS cease

#1  Current daily infections are well below 10k and fatalities per day are fewer than 10.

About 60% of population is fully vaccinated (another 15% or so have had one dose) and probably another 10% are immune from having had a non symptom or minimal symptom infection.

Remember the Neil Ferguson (Imperial College of London) estimate that the UK would have 2M fatalities (official total covid deaths to date are about 130k). This guy is still employed by the College and probably still getting awards.

#3  why continue the lockdown for another year when evidently your over year long lockdown has not worked?
Posted by: Chris || 06/13/2021 16:46 Comments || Top||

#4  Chris, that's a fine question.

I think part of the answer is that our ruling elite is too stupid to imagine a solution other than what they've always done. You can see that here: The Democrat solution to any problem in 1965 was to tax more and spend more. The Democrat solution to any problem in 2021 is the same.

Another part of the answer is that the people making the decisions don't have skin in the game. In the UK a shutdown crushes small businesses, but the government officials who imposed the shutdown never miss a paycheck. So, instead of another UK lockdown, how about Parliament passes a law that no senior member of Her Majesty's Government gets paid a farthing until they solve the bloody problem? I bet you'd see some innovative solutions pretty quickly.

'Arm up and get ready': Lara Trump says those on the border should prepare to take matters into their own hands while VP Harris is busy 'laughing off the crisis'
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
  • Lara Trump appeared on Fox News on Saturday night and suggested residents living along the southern border should 'arm up and get guns'

  • Former president Trump's daughter-in-law accused Vice President Kamala Harris of 'laughing off the crisis at the border'

  • Trump then suggested agents working for Border Patrol and ICE were 'being made a mockery of' with so many illegal immigrants crossing the border

  • In a message to those at the border she said: 'I don't know what you tell... I guess arm up and get ready. Maybe they will have to take matters into their own hands'

  • Data released on Thursday night says illegal crossings have risen 674% in a year, with 180 apprehensions in May, in levels not seen since 2006

#2  Good-ish news from American Rifleman from a week ago. Saturation may be approaching. Key paragraphs::

Gun Sales Decrease, Ammunition Reappearing In Stores

Firearm sales in May, at least those reflected in the number of FBI NICS checks performed for a transfer, came in at roughly 1.4 million, according to an estimated from Small Arms Analytics & Forecasting (SAAF). The figure represents a 0.3 million drop in purchases when compared to the same month in 2020.

The news doesn’t necessarily ease the concerns of longtime enthusiasts who are still struggling to find ammunition on the shelves or particular guns in FFL inventories. Demand for guns, ammo and gear is still at a scalding pace. “The May 2021 number of about 1.4 million firearms is the second monthly decline recorded in the first five months of 2021,” noted SAAF Chief Economist Jurgen Brauer. “Nonetheless, the overall firearms sales pace thus far this year clocks in at nearly 9.2 million units compared to 8.7 million units for January to May 2020.”

Some of the most popular cartridges are remaining in stock for short periods at other outlets, however. The purchasing manager at ammo retailer Wideners.com told AmericanRifleman.org last week that, “From what we’ve seen, manufacturers are able to deliver products within reasonable timelines. However, once we list the products online for sale, they are gone from our inventory very quickly. In recent weeks, we’ve been able to keep popular calibers like 9 mm, .223 Rem., and .45 ACP in stock for longer periods of time."

Sissi eyes Gaza rebuilding to enhance Egypt’s regional clout
[israelTimes] Egyptian leader seeks to capitalize on the international praise he garnered for helping broker last month’s ceasefire between Israel, Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,.

Egypt is banking on a $500-million Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamaswith about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
reconstruction project to shore up its influence in the Middle East, capitalizing on clout it garnered by brokering a ceasefire between Israel and the Hamas.

For an Egyptian teenager like me in 1967, an Israeli victory was inconceivable
[IsraelTimes] In an excerpt from his [unpublished] memoir, a professor of Arabic literature describes the horror at learning his country had lost the Six Day War and the shockwaves that followed the defeat.

Egypt’s disastrous defeat in the 1967 war with Israel was the shock of my generation. I was fifteen at the time and the war broke out during our school exams. I was living in Alexandria with my parents, my sister and my older brother, his wife and their children. The family, with the exception of my brother and myself, decided to move for the duration of the war to Biyala, our village in the Nile Delta.

The country was gripped with war hysteria. Ahmed Said of Cairo Radio’s "Voice of the Arabs" hurled threats of annihilation at the enemy. "Bushra ya ’arab, (Good news O Arabs!)," he would shout, "the day has come; let us erase Israel from the map!"

#5  Many others were not so naive. The first air raid sirens went off in Cairo at approximately 9:10AM. It could be said that by then the war was over. People in Cairo knew that the military airports at Cairo, Helwan, Alexandria, Mersa Matruh had already been bombed and by day's close it was obvious that the Egyptian air force had been destroyed on the ground. In essence, and in fact, the war was over.

#7  By 1966 the Egyptian army, some 55,000 strong, was getting its arse kicked in Yemen. The Arab Socialist Union did everything in its power to disguise the ineptitude of the Egyptian military. However, the wise-guys knew (as did the Israelis) that Nasser's Napoleion, Field Marshall Amr, was a drug addict and an inept field leader.

Egypt: Seven years under Sisi
[AlAhram] President Abdel-Fattah al-Sissi faced huge economic, security, and political challenges when he came to office seven years ago. al-Ahram Weekly examines his success in tackling them

When Abdel-Fattah al-Sissi was sworn in as president of Egypt on 8 June 2014 he pledged that he would work to improve the standard of living for Egyptians and restore stability after three years of political turmoil and security lapses.

President al-Sissi came to office after a tumultuous year following the overthrow of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi amid mass protests to his rule. In his first two years in office he had to face terrorist organizations which threatened to undermine the country’s internal security, and at the same time put the country on sound economic tracks after two years of chaos and turbulence.

Why did Putin speak harshly to the United States?
Direct Translation of the article. Edited

[Regnum] Russian analysts, impressed by the new intonations with which Vladimir Putin spoke about the "red lines" for the West in Ukraine, note the harsh notes first sounded by the usually gentle and diplomatic Russian president.

#1  the defeat of the United States in Ukraine will cause a giant tectonic wave around the world.

I don't think so. Bad policy leading to pull outs and routs have become a pattern. Today, the criteria for leadership has become how well someone can sell failure to the rubes.

Details on each of the topics can be read at the link.
[IsraelTimes] Days after stepping down, Yossi Cohen gives specific details of Mossad actions against Tehran nuke program, his role in UAE deal, his Gazoo error, and his prime ministerial hopes.

Yossi Cohen, who retired as head of the Mossad last week, provided highly specific details of recent Mossad activity against Iran, his interactions with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his role in Israel’s normalization with the UAE, and his own undercover career in an extraordinary interview on Israeli television broadcast on Thursday night.

Cohen intimated that his agency blew up Iran’s underground centrifuge facility at Natanz, gave a precise description of the 2018 operation in which the Mossad stole Iran’s nuclear archive from safes in a Tehran warehouse, confirmed that Iran’s assassinated top nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh had been in Mossad’s sights for years, and said the regime needs to understand that Israel means what it says when it vows to prevent Iran
