  • Admitted to striking Szabo with a single blow that resulted in his death

  • Both men were visiting New York City when a late-night argument ensued

  • Szabo allegedly mistook Jones' vehicle for his Uber, sparking the dispute

Disturbing video shows six young men pummel 12-year-old boy in Brooklyn deli
[NYPOST] Disturbing footage released by police this week shows at least six young men pummeling a 12-year-old boy inside a Brooklyn deli.

The clip, made public by the NYPD late Wednesday, shows the young men punching, kicking and hurling multiple shopping baskets, as well as soda cans, at the pre-teen crouched on the floor of the First Stop Grocery on Marcy Avenue near Pulaski Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant around 5:30 p.m. July 13.

One of the suspects gets in a last stomp on the victim’s head before the whole crew takes off, the footage shows.

The attack left the boy with a bruise on his head, but he refused medical attention at the scene, police said.

It was not immediately clear what provoked the assault or whether the youngster knew his attackers.

North Carolina professor is found dead weeks after taking early retirement following online petition to get him fired over tweet where he dubbed State governor 'Massa Cooper' and compared coronavirus restrictions to a 'slave state'
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
  • Body of UNCW Prof Mike Adams, 55, was found at his Wilmington home on Thursday when sheriffs department did a wellness check

  • His death comes less than a month after the university announced he would retire early following a petition to oust him for making controversial remarks

  • The tenured criminology professor recently reached a $504,702 settlement with UNCW for lost salary and lost retirement benefits

  • On May 29 Adams tweeted: 'I almost felt like a free man who was not living in the slave state of North Carolina. 'Massa Cooper, let my people go!'

  • Another tweet on May 28, read: 'Don't shut down the universities. Shut down the non essential majors. Like Women's Studies'

  • In 2016, Adams had also sparked outrage when he suggested a Muslim student was 'a terrorist and that gay marriage was bad as rape'
...or something about Muslims and about gay marriage, but his enemies, who are legion and loud were perfectly happy to put their own words in his mouth...
This joyful warrior battled fiercely for freedom of speech and thought in the university for two decades, along the way winning a tenure battle originally denied to him because of exactly the kind of nonsense that drove him from the Democratic party and youthful atheism to mature conservatism and Christianity, and in the end led to this early retirement.

Threatening to shoot someone over video harassment, wrong.

But if there is not a store policy, and the check-out worker didn't seem to have an issue here or even the next customer - then for whatever reason gal chooses to not wear a mask - then whose business is it of the videographer to force this confrontation?

Who here is the self-centered unstable one?

Britain
Revealed: Tens of thousands of 'golden visas' have been granted to wealthy foreign investors - including 3,966 to Chinese and 2,477 to Russians - since 'backdoor' scheme was launched 12 years ago
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] Tens of thousands
...twelve thousand, actually, as we discover on reading deeper into the article — those Mail reporters are awfully excitable...
of so-called 'golden visas' have been granted to wealthy foreign investors, including more than 6,000 to Chinese and Russians, since the 'backdoor' scheme was launched 12 years ago.

Those eligible for the government's tier one investor visa, which launched in 2008,
...Labour’s Gordon Brown was prime minister then, dear Reader, if you wondered whose bright idea this was...
must have at least £2million in investment funds and a UK bank account.

With that the can work or study in the UK for up to five years, while also being eligible to apply to settle in the country after making further investments.

Today it was revealed 14 Conservative ministers, including six in the Cabinet, have accepted tens of thousands of pounds in donations from Russian oligarchs.
How many Labour MPs have done the same?
All of the donations are legal under electoral rules and have been properly declared.

But there are concerns that the 'golden visa' scheme can be exploited, because not enough background checks are made on applicants.

Between July 2008 and March 2020 there were 12,175 tier one investor visas granted, according to analysis of Home Office figures.

The idea is to bring in foreign investment, so there are a lot of rules around how much money you spend, how many jobs you create, etc. Other countries' version of the program just allows you to buy the visa, which people prefer. US accuses Russia of testing anti-satellite weapon in space
[Al Ahram] The United States accused Russia on Thursday of conducting a test of an anti-satellite weapon in space, asserting that it exposed Moscow's intent to deploy weapons that threaten US and allied satellites. In Moscow, the Defense Ministry said the July 15 event involved ``a small space vehicle'' that ``inspected one of the national satellites from a close distance using special equipment.'' It added that the inspection ``provided valuable information about the object that was inspected, which was transmitted to the ground-based control facilities.''

The US, however, said the Russian actions were inconsistent with the stated mission of an inspector satellite.

``The Russian satellite system used to conduct this on-orbit weapons test is the same satellite system that we raised concerns about earlier this year, when Russia maneuvered near a US government satellite,'' said Gen. John W. Raymond, commander of Space Command and the head of US Space Force.

``This is further evidence of Russia's continuing efforts to develop and test space-based systems, and consistent with the Kremlin's published military doctrine to employ weapons that hold US and allied space assets at risk.''

In a space strategy document published last month, the Pentagon asserted that ``China and Russia present the greatest strategic threat due to their development, testing, and deployment of counterspace capabilities and their associated military doctrine for employment in conflict extending to space.``

It added, ``China and Russia each have weaponized space as a means to reduce US and allied military effectiveness and challenge our freedom of operation in space.''

Private US space analysts said US concerns about the July 15 event appear justified in an era of rapidly improving space technologies that could pose threats to satellites that are integral to modern life in the US and globally. Defense of these satellites was a key reason the Trump administration create US Space Force last December.

Chinese Researcher Facing U.S. Charges Takes Refuge in Consulate
[AnNahar] A Chinese researcher who U.S. authorities say hid her ties to the People's Liberation Army has taken refuge in Beijing's the Socialist paradise of San Francisco
...where God struck dead Anton LaVey, home of the Sydney Ducks, ruled by Vigilance Committee from 1859 through 1867, reliably and volubly Democrat since 1964...
consulate to avoid visa fraud charges, in a case Beijing denounced on Thursday as "naked political persecution."

According to a court document filed this week in a separate case in Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,, Tang Juan, a cancer treatment researcher at University of California-Davis, lied about her position as a PLA civilian medical official on her visa application last year.

The document filed Monday, in the separate visa fraud case of PLA-tied researcher Song Chen, said that after FBI agents interviewed Tang on June 20, she took refuge in the Chinese consulate in San Francisco.

The Tang and Song cases are the latest in a series of U.S. arrests of Chinese researchers for allegedly hiding their ties to the PLA or Chinese Communist Party in visa applications to study or do research in the United States.

Tang's status was mentioned in Song's case to justify a federal prosecutor's argument that the recently arrested Song should not be released on bail because she is likely to try to flee the country.

- RISING TENSIONS -
The cases come amid boiling trade, military and diplomatic tensions between Washington and Beijing.

On Wednesday, the State Department said it had ordered China to shut its consulate in Houston, accusing Beijing of ramping up spying and intellectual property theft operations.

"These activities have increased markedly in scale and scope over the past few years," the department said.

Asked early Thursday about Tang, Chinese Foreign Ministry front man Wang Wenbin said he had no information to release at the moment.

However,
a poor excuse is better than no excuse at all...
Wang said, the U.S. government "has continually monitored, harassed and even arbitrarily detained Chinese students and scholars in the US, and accused Chinese scholars on the presumption of guilt."

"This is naked political persecution," he said.

"China will take necessary measures to safeguard Chinese citizens’ safety and legitimate rights."

The cases come as the United States cracks down on what is says is a drive by Beijing to obtain US scientific and industrial secrets to bolster its own technological capabilities and economic strengths.

- MILITARY TIES -
A key target has been researchers with military ties, including civilians associated with the PLA.

According to the charges in her case, Tang arrived in the United States on December 27 on a research exchange program. On her visa application, she answered "no" to questions about whether she ever served in the military or was a member of or affiliated with a communist party.

The FBI said it later found pictures of her in uniform with insignia for the PLA "civilian cadres," and identifying information describing her an associate researcher at a Chinese air force hospital.

In a search of her apartment in Davis, California, the FBI said they found documents indicating she was a member of the Chinese Communist Party.

Other recent cases have similar details. Song was charged Monday after more than a year working as a researcher at Stanford University.

Investigators said she falsely claimed that she had ended her service in the PLA in 2011, but actually continued to work in an air force university.

On June 11, US authorities arrested Wang Xin at Los Angeles International Airport, 16 months after arriving in the country to conduct research at the University of California-San Francisco.

He was charged with visa fraud for not being fully truthful about his ongoing position as a PLA professor of medicine. Authorities accused him of sending back research to China from his US host.

Another unnamed woman who had done research at Duke University in North Carolina was similarly investigated but allowed to leave the country on July 12.

In September 2019, U.S. officials arrested a Chinese man, Liu Zhongsan, in New Jersey on charges he was helping other Chinese fraudulently obtain U.S. student and researcher visas.

The Justice Department said Liu's operation was aimed at bringing in Chinese who would recruit U.S. citizens to work in Chinese research programs.

Washington Post settles $250M suit with Covington teen Nick Sandmann
[NY Post] The Washington Post on Friday agreed to settle a monster $250 million lawsuit filed by Covington Catholic High School student Nick Sandmann over its botched coverage of his 2019 encounter with a Native American elder.

Sandmann declared the victory in a tweet on his 18th birthday. It’s unclear how much the newspaper settled for.

"On 2/19/19, I filed $250M defamation lawsuit against Washington Post. Today, I turned 18 & WaPo settled my lawsuit," he wrote.

"Thanks to @ToddMcMurtry & @LLinWood for their advocacy. Thanks to my family & millions of you who have stood your ground by supporting me. I still have more to do," he continued.

It’s the teen’s second win in a whopping $800 million defamation battle against a number of news outlets including the Washington Post, CNN, ABC, CBS, The Guardian, The Hill and NBC.

CNN agreed to settle with Sandmann in January this year as part of a separate $275 million claim.

Sandmann and a group of his Covington classmates were vilified on social media after they were filmed wearing "Make America Great Again" hats after an anti-abortion rally while being yelled at by demonstrators.

Sandmann, then 16, was singled out after footage of his confrontation with Native American activist Nathan Phillips was picked up by CNN and other outlets who claimed the incident was racially motivated.

Footage released later showed it was the Covington students who were being harassed.

In a subsequent tweet Friday, Sandmann fired a warning shot at Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey.

"We have settled with WAPO and CNN. The fight isn’t over. 2 down. 6 to go. Don’t hold your breath @jack," he wrote.

#4  CNN paid Sandmann $25m. Prolly same for WaPo.

#5  CNN paid Sandmann $25m.

Is that thousands or millions, Lumpy Mussolini7603? I’ve seen it used both ways.

#6  Also, yours is the first hard number I’ve seen for the CNN settlement amount — where did you see it?
Posted by: trailing wife || 07/24/2020 14:56 Comments || Top||

#7  Millions. WaPo sugar daddy Bozo(s) personally makes about $1m per hour.

Sandmann already pocketed 2/3ds of the CNN settlement. He should not have settled w Bozos/WaPo

#8  I'm hoping this encourages more people to go after all these outlets.

If they can't be destroyed, at least bleed them.

#9  Bezos has deep pockets. Pick em. Others, not so much. Bleed em

#10  Thank you for clarifying. $25million — as the first of six law suits — is an awful lot for a middle class kid heading off to university, even if it is petty change for Mr. Bezos.

Mr. Wife points out that while that is pocket change for Mr. Bezos, it is still a distressing amount for the Washington Post bottom line, so it will resonate.

#14  Thanks, magpie. I sorta remember this from years ago but it's one of those things that should be chiseled in stone, at least it will be with me now. It'll be interesting to see probabilities versus outcomes

A slight aside, but I spotted what might be a bitchin' arbitrage opportunity if I could figure out a way to make it happen. I'll do a post on it for tomorrow.

#15  lord garth submitted Fox19’s article on the subject, commenting

The WaPo and the others initially blamed Sandmann for the incident, editorialized against Catholics, etc. Then video clearly showed otherwise and research showed that Nathan Phillips, the 'indigenous' person was not a war vet and was a professional protestor.
Posted by: trailing wife || 07/24/2020 22:30 Comments || Top||

#16  At least (as far as we know) that this professional protest is not lobbing Molotov cocktails other projectiles at the police, property, etc.

#17  Prisoner's Dilemma and WaPo caved in first. Stay tuned...

Hopefully there is a Bubba involved somewhere.
