Dozens killed by heavy rain in Angola
[DAWN] Torrential rain in Angola has killed 41 people and caused widespread destruction, the government said on Thursday.

Twelve out of 18 provinces were hit by a violent downpour which began in the early hours of Monday and lasted late into the afternoon, Interior Minister Eugenio Laborinho said in a statement. 41 people died and more than 300 homes were destroyed by flooding, he said.

"In recent days we have been witnessing heavy rainfall, causing flooding, destruction of infrastructure and plantations," he said.

Russian Mass Shooter Says He Was Victim Of Hazing

Moscow, Russia (CNN) A Russian soldier on trial for shooting and killing eight of his fellow service members has said he was the victim of "hazing," Russian state news agency TASS reported on Thursday.

Ramil Shamsutdinov
bzzzzt ! мусульманка Красная тревога !
allegedly opened fire on colleagues at a military garrison near the city of Chita, Siberia on October 25, 2019.

"The Ministry of Defense said that the soldier committed the crime as a result of a nervous breakdown caused by personal circumstances," TASS reported.

"At the same time, he, as well as other several soldiers are regarded as victims in a criminal case dealing with hazing in the military unit," the agency added.
I hope the Kremlin isn't crumbling too.
In a letter obtained from the accused's father and published by TASS, Shamsutdinov apologized to the families of his alleged victims.

"I regret that I could not restrain myself and took an extreme step, but I had no other choice -- I could not endure being harassed any more," Shamsutdinov wrote.

"I express my sincere condolences to the families of the victims and please forgive me if you can."

A system of pervasive hazing was once common in the Russian and Soviet militaries, and bullied soldiers sometimes turned their weapons on colleagues. Such cases are relatively rare today.

Crowds storm president's office in Georgia's breakaway Abkhazia
[Al Jazeera] Hundreds of demonstrators contesting a local election in Georgia's breakaway region of Abkhazia have broken into the de facto leader's office demanding his resignation, according to Russian state media.

The crowd on Thursday gathered outside the building in the city of Sukhumi, the Russia-backed separatist region's capital, before breaking down the door and smashing windows to get inside, pictures and footage circulated by Russian state media showed.

Syrians build new lives in post-conflict Abkhazia
The protesters claim there were widespread irregularities in the re-election of Raul Khadzhimba for a second five-year term as Abkhazia's president in September.

Thursday's unrest came as the authorities were set to review a call by opposition leader Alkhas Kvitsinia to void the results of his runoff against Khadzhimba.

Khadzhimba's office denounced the protest as a coup attempt. The Russian embassy in Abkhazia said it was following the situation.

Later on Thursday, Khadzhimba said in a statement that he did not rule out the possibility that a state of emergency may be declared.

"All state government bodies are operating in the routine mode. The law enforcement agencies have been placed on a heightened state of alert. In case of a need, I will take measures to impose a state of emergency in the country," he said.

"We have already discussed such development of the events with the security council," Khadzhimba said.

#7  No, much more complicated, as Tolstoy knew.

Hadji Murat is a Chechen rebel who has fought fiercely and courageously against the Russian empire. After a feud with his commander he defects to the Russians, only to find that he is now trusted by neither side. He is first welcomed but then imprisoned by the Russians under suspicion of being a spy, and when he hears news of his wife and son held captive by the Chechens, Murat risks all to try to save his family.

- employment up by more than 2 million

- unemployment down by more than 500 thousand

- all time low unemployment rate for blacks and hispanics

- wages up by 3%

- inflation less than 2%

- productivity up 2%

only major bummer is the increase in the national debt was astronomical $800 billion

Hungary Takes On the Feminist Goliath‐and Wins
h/t Instapundit
[PJMedia] Feminism is a social and political movement. It is not an academic discipline on par with, say, mathematics, economics, business administration, engineering or physics. Gender studies, feminism’s academic wing, does not constitute an appropriate subject for an academic degree. At best it is a subset of a complex of ideas, issues, and events properly canvassed by the History Department, along with a myriad other themes and developments in the study of Western civilization.

...Enter Hungary. In an effort to restore curricular and administrative sanity to university education, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his Fidesz Party have passed legislation to abolish Gender Studies as an area of official study. Hungary’s Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjen has stated that such programs "ha[ve] no business in universities" as they represent "an ideology, not a science," with a market profile "close to zero." Similarly, Orban’s Chief of staff Gergely Gulyas said, "The Hungarian government is of the clear view that people are born either men or women. They lead their lives the way they think best [and] the Hungarian state does not wish to spend public funds on education in this area."
