Fugitive British schoolgirl and teacher found in France
A British schoolgirl and her married maths teacher, who triggered a Europe-wide hunt after running away together a week ago, were found by police on Friday in the southwestern French city of Bordeaux.

British police said teacher Jeremy Forrest, 30, had been cooled for a few years
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
on suspicion of abducting 15-year-old Megan Stammers. The pair were found strolling down Bordeaux's main shopping street.

Forrest faces extradition to Britannia while Megan was being looked after by British consular staff and child protection officers, police told a presser in the pair's home county of Sussex, southeast England.

"She will be returned to the UK to be with her family," Chief Inspector Jason Tingley of Sussex Police told journalists.

He added that the pair were found after a member of the public saw Forrest in Bordeaux and recognised him from television coverage.

French officials said the couple had been found on a public street in the centre of Bordeaux.

A French police source said they were cooled for a few years
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
in the city's main shopping street -- the 1.2 kilometre pedestrian rue Saint-Catherine -- while going for a job interview.

Forrest was later seen leaving the cop shoppe on Friday evening in an unmarked police car. He was hidden from view by officers and the vehicle left for an unknown destination, accompanied by two escort cars.

Prosecutors emphasised that French police were not investigating the case but simply carrying out an international arrest warrant issued by British authorities.

#2  404 on the link there. Here's a different one. Choice tidbits:

He's only been married for about 18 months.
When he applied for a job in a pub, someone recognized him and set up a sting with the police.
There's a pub in Bordeaux called "HMS Victory". That's cheek.

Meanwhile, the Daily Mail has a photo of the seething volcano of virile manhood.

That's Fred's little joke via his automatic text translator, JosephM. It just means arrested. Translated terms have a light grey underline; you can check against the original text by clicking on the headline.

#10  "Cooled for a few a years ..." > Yokay, I'll bite, WTH DOES THIS MEAN???

I wondered that myself; that was my only interest in this story. When the link came up dead, I googled for others. It's entirely too early to say that he's "cooled" (imprisoned) for a few years, so I wanted to see what the original wording said. Link still dead, still don't know.

Egypt PM Denies Copts Fled Sinai Town over Death Threats
[An Nahar] Prime Minister Hisham Qandil on Saturday denied that Copts had fled their homes in Egypt's Sinai peninsula, after officials and residents said the Christians left after receiving death threats from suspected Islamists.

"The instructions given by the Egyptian authorities is to protect the Coptic brothers wherever they may be," Qandil told news hounds in remarks carried by the state-run MENA news agency.

He said there were no "forced evacuations" of Copts from the Sinai, but that one family had decided to relocate.

But the National Council for Human Rights set up by Islamist President Mohammed Morsi issued a statement on Saturday saying "threats" had been made against Copts in the Sinai border town of Rafah forcing families to flee.

The council said it was monitoring developments in Sinai with deep concern and urged the authorities to protect them, warning of dire consequences if their lives were at risk.

"If the state drops this responsibility, it will be a dangerous precedent in Egypt, taking the country to dark ages, instead of (strengthening) the rule of law," the statement said.

On Friday officials and Sinai residents told Agence La Belle France Presse that several Christian families have fled their homes in the Sinai after receiving death threats from suspected Islamist turbans.

Last week, flyers began circulating in the town of Rafah on the Gazoo Strip border demanding that its tiny Coptic population move out, residents said.

Father Mikhail Antoine of El-Arish church told AFP "the families moved voluntarily because they feared for their lives after the threats."

Copts have been nervous since Islamists came to power following an uprising that toppled president Hosni Mubarak
...The former President-for-Life of Egypt, dumped by popular demand in early 2011...
last year.

They have also been fearing the backlash from an anti-Islam film apparently produced by a Copt in the United States that sparked violent protests worldwide, and that they believe will lead to further persecution at home.

Venezuela's marathon man looks to run down Chavez
[Telegraph.uk] Soaked by rain and perspiration, Henrique Capriles retreated reluctantly inside his campaign bus as the horn-blowing, flag-waving convoy crept through the pot-holed streets of the slums of Maracaibo, Venezuela's second city.

A late evening tropical thunderstorm had finally forced him from his place atop a pick-up truck after a typical 12-hour day of rapturous rallies and rock-star receptions for the dashing 40-year-old opposition leader.

Undeterred by the downpour, the exuberant crowds outside chanted his name as firecrackers erupted in the pitch-darkness that is graphic testimony to the failure of the country with the world's largest oil reserves to deliver electricity to its own poor.

In Venezuela's presidential elections on Sunday, Mr Capriles faces one of the toughest challenges in global politics - defeating Hugo Chavez.

The socialist autocrat dominates the airwaves and is tapping the state's deep oil coffers to fund his campaign and "buy" votes with a calculated kaboom of investment in populist social programme in the weeks before the vote.

But despite its energy riches, the country is mired in debt and unemployment as state-imposed price and exchange rate controls shackle the economy. And violent crime is so endemic that Caracas has the unenviable ranking of the murder capital of the world.

Now, with the long-divided opposition united for the first time behind a charismatic state governor who is already a veteran of Venezuela's rough-and-tumble politics despite his youthful years, President Chavez is facing his most serious competition at the ballot box since he came to power in 1998.

At stake is the grip on power of an anti-Western firebrand
...firebrands are noted more for audio volume and the quantity of spittle generated than for any actual logic in their arguments...
who embraces Iran and China and is seeking to use the nation's oil wealth to export his dream of a socialist revolution across Latin America.

It is a "David and Goliath" battle, Mr Capriles told The Sunday Telegraph during a wide-ranging interview in which he pledged a number of radical breaks from the policies of the former paratrooper officer know by his fervent supporters as "El Comandante".

It's the inevitable transformation of a socialist state with the well-to-do connected at the top (inner party), their strap hangers (outer party) and the proles parceled all the left overs. The middle class will be a near extinction population enough to qualify for endangered species status.

#2  You know what taxes affects most? The value of real estate -- the immobile resource. Things that are mobile don't bear the brunt of tax burdens. I'm all for lower taxes, but Civic Report 71 gets an F in economics.

#3  Sorry, let me elaborate. A proper analysis of migration would estimate a model of the decision to locate in a place as a function of various characteristics of the person and the place. Sorry for going on too long.

#4  You know what taxes affects most? The value of real estate -- the immobile resource.

Proposition 13 pretty much limited taxes on real estate around in 1978. The decrease in income affected more the county and municipal governments than the state government; due to declined property values, the tax revenue is now even less.

The State of California primarily derives its income taxes on other-than-real-state: capital gains, corporate profits, sales taxes, income tax, etc, not to mention regulatory and compliance fees.

#5  The Texas Governor and others have been wooing businesses to move from the taker politicians for some time. Now that those businesses have been moving, they are now wooing Californians who believe in "Individual Responsibility".

What will be left behind will be the "Greek Nightmare", politicians elected promising entitlements and handouts, the takers, and nothing left to hand out. Lets see what happens NOW between those two types of characters.

Tymoshenko urges Ukraine to 'oust regime' in jail message
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Jailed ex-premier Yulia Tymoshenko on Saturday urged Ukrainians to oust President Viktor Yanukovych's government in legislative elections next month, in a video message recorded in detention.

Tymoshenko's lawyers recorded the wobbly hand-held video at the hospital in the eastern city of Kharkiv where she has for the last few months stayed for treatment on chronic back pains.

Looking feisty and energetic despite having spent over a year in detention, Tymoshenko directed the prepared message at the camera as security guards made half-hearted attempts to block the lens and halt the filming.

"I address everyone! If you do not understand that it is criminality and the mafia who are ruling Ukraine now then nothing will protect you afterwards," she said in the video which was posted by her party.

The ex-Orange Revolution leader urged Ukrainians "to rise up and overthrow this criminal government in the elections" on October 28. She also described her daily life as "hell", adding this was just what Yanukovych wanted.

Imran admits slump in PTI's popularity
[Dawn] Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf
...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations....
(PTI) chief Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who isn't your heaviest-duty thinker, maybe not even among the top five...
on Saturday admitted that his party's popularity has dropped by 10 per cent.
Is it because his voters have noticed his utter vapidity, or because he's grown some wrinkles and a bit of a paunch recently?
Khan was speaking to media representatives following his meeting with Baloch leader Sardar Akhtar Mengal who has returned to the country after a self-imposed exile of three years in London.

The PTI chief did not accept 22 per cent figure of a recent survey. However,
a lie repeated often enough remains a lie...
he admitted that his party's popularity did go down but only by 10 per cent.

Khan said those voters did not switch to any other party and that the PTI will soon be able to reverse this trend.

A survey, conducted by the International Republican Institute (IRI) by taking the opinions of six thousand persons from different segments of the society about political parties and the public problems during July-August period, showed that 28 per cent of the people would vote for PML-N, 24 per cent for PTI, 14 per cent for PPP and 3 per cent for MQM.

Comparing these figures with the IRI's February survey results, the popularity of the PML-N has increased by 3.7 per cent while popularity of PTI and PPP has sharply dropped by 22.6 and 12.5 per cent respectively.

ISPR denies ISI's role in Bilawal-Khar fiasco
[Dawn] A front man of ISPR on Saturday denied the allegation of British Daily Telegraph which accuses Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) for running a defamation campaign through a Bangladeshi tabloid "Blitz weekly" against Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, DawnNews reported.

The front man said these allegations are absurd and baseless. "The ISI has nothing to do with this defamation campaign and neither any problem exists between the foreign minister and the agency," said the front man.

According to Blitz Weekly, the married foreign minister, who has two young children with her millionaire husband, and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the Pakistain People's Party (PPP) co-chairman, want to get married and have been regularly talking on the telephone and sending one another cards.

The tabloid claimed President Asif Ali Ten Percent Zardari
... husband of the late Benazir Bhutto, who has been singularly lacking in curiosity about who done her in ...
is firmly opposed to their alleged relationship and had sought details of their mobile telephone conversations to establish the facts.

The ISPR front man said it is handiwork of those who want to weaken the state by creating misunderstanding between various institutions. It is not something new because such people have been fabricating misleading and impish stories in the past as well, he added.

The British daily needs to behave more responsibly and confirm veracity of information from respective entities before printing such malicious stories.

The front man termed the allegations involving the agencies as rubbish and part of a propaganda campaign, and said that we reserve the rights to take legal action on such anonymous reports without quoting any names and sources.

Islamabad High Court stays blasphemy trial
[Dawn] Chief Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday stayed the blasphemy trial of the minor Christian girl in order to first hear on October 1 her petition for quashing the FIR registered against her.

Justice Rehman ordered the stay after the petitioner's lawyer, Abdul Hameed Rana, said the trial in a lower court was to begin on the same date.

Earlier, lawyer Fazalur Rehman Niazi, representing her accuser, Malik Ummad, told the court that his client had not received the court notice that the petition for quashing the case would be heard on Friday and sought time to prepare his reply.

Chief Justice Rehman observed that because the petitioner's lawyer had not deposited the required fee, the notice could not be delivered through special messenger to the complainant.

He directed the additional registrar of Islamabad High Court judicial branch and the police investigation officer in the case to ensure the notice for October 1 is delivered in time.

The petition filed by the accused Christian girl said the FIR registered against her was baseless and based on false information.

Her lawyer contended that it was the Imam of Mehra Jaffer mosque, Khalid Jadoon, who fabricated the charge of blasphemy because he wanted the Christian community leave the area.

Counsel Abdul Hameed Rana referred to the statement prosecution witness Hafiz Zubair recorded under section 164 of CrPC on August 31 that the Imam put pages of Holy Koran in the shopping bag to make a case against the Christians.

Also, he said, the girl was a juvenile according to her medical report compiled by a board of seven doctors, which stated that she appears to be uneducated and of underdeveloped mind.

Under these circumstances, there was no chance of her conviction and further proceeding with the case would be a futile exercise, the petition said.
