Saudi Woman Beheaded for 'Sorcery'
[An Nahar] A Saudi woman was beheaded Monday after being convicted of practicing sorcery, which is banned in the ultra-conservative kingdom, the interior ministry said.

Amina bint Abdulhalim Nassar was executed in the northern province of Jawf for "practicing witchcraft and sorcery," the ministry said in a statement carried by SPA state news agency.

It is not clear how many women have been executed in the desert-kingdom, but another woman was beheaded in October for killing her husband by setting his house on fire.

The beheading took to 73 the number of executions in Soddy Arabia this year.

Dupe entry: Hurricane predictors admit they can’t predict hurricanes - quit jobs
Two top U.S. hurricane forecasters, revered like rock stars in Deep South hurricane country, are quitting the practice because it doesn’t work.

William Gray and Phil Klotzbach say a look back shows their past 20 years of forecasts had no value.

The two scientists from Colorado State University will still discuss different probabilities as hurricane seasons approach — a much more cautious approach. But the shift signals how far humans are, even with supercomputers, from truly knowing what our weather will do next.

Gray, recently joined by Klotzbach, has been known for decades for an annual forecast of how many hurricanes can be expected each official hurricane season (which runs from June to November.) Southerners hang on his words, as even a mid-sized hurricane can cause billions in damage.

Last week, the pair dropped this announcement out of a clear, blue sky:

“We are discontinuing our early December quantitative hurricane forecast for the next year ... Our early December Atlantic basin seasonal hurricane forecasts of the last 20 years have not shown real-time forecast skill even though the hindcast studies on which they were based had considerable skill.”

Wow. Maybe we can get some global warming nutjobs to admit their crap don't work either! I can dream, can't I?

Especially with super-computers. Exponential Error is a mathematical construct (also enshrined within QM) that basically says how predictable a chaotic system will be...

Kabila admits vote flaws but defends his re-election
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] President Joseph Kabila admitted on Monday there were flaws in the Democratic Republic of Congo's elections which handed him a new five-year term but rejected a report finding they lacked credibility.

The assessment was Kabila's first public statement since the bitterly disputed November 28 vote, whose outcome sparked violent protests in the capital and was criticised by international observers and the country's powerful church.

"Were there mistakes, errors? Definitely, like in any other election, be it on the continent or otherwise," Kabila, in power since 2001, told a news conference in Kinshasa with journalists including the BBC.

"But does it put in doubt the credibility of the elections? I don't think so," he added. In a damning report on the polls, international observers from the Carter Center, a non-profit group founded by former US president Jimmy Carter
... the worst president ever. Maybe the second worst. The votes aren't all in yet...
, said Saturday the counting process was so flawed the results "lack credibility".

Kabila said Monday he rejected that assessment. "The credibility of these elections cannot be put in doubt," he said.

But the polls got another scathing review Monday from the National Episcopal Conference of the Congo, the country's Catholic bishops' council, which deployed some 30,000 observers nationwide, the largest monitoring group on voting day.

Saudi Authorities Behead Woman for 'Sorcery'
A Saudi woman was beheaded Monday after being convicted of practicing sorcery, which is banned in the ultra-conservative kingdom, the Interior Ministry said.

Amina Bint Abdulhalim Nassar was executed in the northern province of Jawf for "practicing witchcraft and sorcery," the ministry said in a statement carried by SPA state news agency.

Bin Salim was arrested in April 2009 and then sentenced to death in a subsequent trial. According to a senior official from Saudi Arabia's religious police Bin Salim convinced her clients that she was able to treat any disease upon payment of around 3,000 Saudi Riyals (800 dollars) per session.

The official was reported as saying that investigations were launched following numerous complaints.

The beheading brings the number of executions in the desert kingdom to 73 this year.

In November, a 45-year old Muslim man from Australia who was in Saudi Arabia for the Hajj was sentenced to 500 lashes for blasphemy. The man's family says that even were he to be in perfect health, the sentence will almost certainly kill him.

Medvedev's Facebook appeal draws insults
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's attempt to placate the masses who rallied against a disputed poll backfired on his own Facebook page on Monday when it became flooded with irate comments.

More than 10,000 people posted replies, many of them insulting, after Medvedev wrote on Facebook that while he disagreed with protesters' slogans, he was still ready to run a check on whether the vote was marred by fraud.

"Dmitry Anatolyevich, I voted for you in the last elections. Give me back my vote, I've changed my mind," wrote Vitaly Maiorov.

"Coward, coward and once again coward!" wrote Sergei Slaikovsky.

Many pointed out sarcastically that the rally slogans Medvedev said he rejected included "For fair elections."

"The Russian president doesn't agree that elections should be fair? That's sad," wrote Mikhail Noskov.

Russia vote will stand despite protests: Putin aide
[Pak Daily Times] Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's
...Second President of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Because of constitutionally mandated term limits he is the current Prime Minister of Russia. His sock puppet, Dmitry Medvedev, was installed in the 2008 presidential elections. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law. During his eight years in office Russia's economy bounced back from crisis, seeing GDP increase, poverty decrease and average monthly salaries increase. During his presidency Putin passed into law a series of fundamental reforms, including a flat income tax of 13%, a reduced profits tax, and new land and legal codes. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile...
front man said Monday the results of contested parliamentary polls will stand despite massive street protests and a probe by the election authorities.
Hey! Kabila said the same thing!
"Even if you add up all this so-called evidence, it accounts for just over 0.5 percent of the total number of votes," Putin's front man Dmitry Peskov told AFP in a telephone interview. "So even if hypothetically you recognise that they are being contested in court, then in any case, this can in no way affect the question of the vote's legitimacy or the overall results," Peskov said. His comments followed an order from President Dmitry Medvedev for election officials to look into reports of vote-fixing after the ruling party's narrow victory sparked the largest protest rallies since the 1990s. Saturday's historic demonstrations near the Kremlin saw more than 50,000 people deride the outcome of December 4 elections that were widely seen as a litmus test for Putin's planned return to the presidency next year.

The rallies have put Putin under the strongest political pressure he has faced in his dominant 12-year rule and suggested that his path back to the Kremlin in March elections may be thornier than originally thought. Putin himself stayed out of the public spotlight over the weekend and was scheduled on Monday to officially launch a new reactor at a nuclear power station in the central Russian region of Tver. But Medvedev on Sunday responded to the demonstrations by announcing the launch of an inquiry into the violation reports. "I disagree with the slogans and declarations made at the meetings," Medvedev wrote in his Facebook account. "Nevertheless, I have issued instructions to check all polling station reports about (failures) to follow election laws," Medvedev wrote.

Billionaire to Oppose Putin in Russian Presidential Election
[NY Times] Amid a crescendo of complaints from Russians fed up with the country's tightly controlled political system, two prominent figures -- a billionaire industrialist and the recently ousted finance minister -- sought to fill a void in the opposition leadership on Monday.

The billionaire, Mikhail D. Prokhorov, who owns shares in a major gold mining company and an array of other ventures in Russia as well as the New Jersey Nets basketball franchise in the United States, said he would run for president, challenging Prime Minister Vladimir V. Putin.

"I made a decision, probably the most serious decision in my life: I am going to the presidential election," Mr. Prohkorov said at a news conference. He has barely appeared in public since mid-September, when he was removed as the head of a pro-business party, Just Cause, after clashing with Kremlin political strategists.

Union vote quells NLRB controversy
Unions take more precaution against voter fraud than the country
A Boeing Machinists union voted late Wednesday to approve a four-year contract extension, likely ending a months-long labor debate that provoked Republican attacks on the National Labor Relations Board and the White House.

Seventy-four percent of District 751 members voted to accept the deal. District 751 represents more than 45,000 active, laid-off and retired Boeing employees, most of them in Washington state. The contract increases wages and ensures Boeing's new 737 MAX plane will be built in Washington's Puget Sound region.

Europe
Former French PM Villepin to run for president
[AP] Dominique de Villepin.
... who may not be a woman ...
the former French prime minister who gained international renown for speaking out against the war in Iraq, has shaken up La Belle France's presidential campaign by announcing he'll run as an independent.

The announcement on French television is likely to complicate life for both the Socialist candidate, Francois Hollande, and President Nicolas Sarkozy,
...23rd and current President of the French Republic and ex officio Co-Prince of Andorra. Sarkozy is married to singer-songwriter Carla Bruni, who has a really nice birthday suit...
who runs the conservative UMP party that Villepin served under.

By positioning himself as a centrist, Villepin could siphon votes from both candidates, but the move is being seen primarily as a finger in the eye of Sarkozy. The two men are bitter rivals, despite inhabiting the same conservative side of the political spectrum.

Villepin was acquitted in September of charges he took part in a smear campaign against Sarkozy. On Sunday, he criticized Sarkozy for not protecting La Belle France's interests at a recent EU summit and imposing several rounds of budget cuts.

With growth slowing and difficult budget cuts likely ahead, both Hollande and Sarkozy have tried to paint themselves as beyond partisanship -- possibly because they fear both established parties will be blamed for La Belle France's high debt levels and poor economy.

India-Pakistan
PML-N to make Pakistan a 'free' country: Nawaz
[Pak Daily Times] Pakistain Moslem League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
has said that his party will play an active role for making Pakistain a dignified, independent and prosperous country in real sense.

Addressing the party parliamentarians, leaders and workers belonging to Gujranwala, he said that the PML-N would again get the country to the point where the ratio of its progress was much more in the region, job opportunities for youth were increasing, there was conducive atmosphere for local and foreign investment and the people were satisfied and confident with regard to their future. Green passport and green flag were seen with dignity throughout the world.

He said that political parties were asset of the country and a symbol of the national unity and solidarity but unfortunately the dictators in Pakistain played games for dividing political parties, occupying their offices, depriving them of their leadership and formed the parties of their choices as a result of which not only democratic process was damaged but the national unity and solidarity were also put at stake. He said that nation was divided due to different ideas. Had the democratic process not been hindered in 1999, Pakistain would have been become the Asian tiger in economic sense, he said.

He said that it was the result of long dictatorship that Pakistain had lost its image in the comity of nations and was facing the crisis of basic needs like gas, electricity and energy.

He said that poverty and unemployment were increasing, but the party would work to bring Pakistain again to the place where it was left in October 1999. "We not only had made Pakistain invincible but despite restrictions imposed due to atomic kabooms, Pakistain was included in the rank of wheat exporting countries," he said.

#1  his party will play an active role for making Pakistain a dignified, independent and prosperous country in real sense.

There is the problem in a nutshell - Pakistain is not so much a real country as a collection of usually competing, sometimes allied interests, each with their own set of goals, interests and foreign policy. It may be a country in the sense of having a contiguous border on a map or of having an airline and a football team, but it seems closer to South Central Los Angeles than a nation-state.

It wouldn't surprise me if South Central L.A. had a higher per capita GDP

Senate okays bills on evils against women
[Pak Daily Times] The Senate on Monday unanimously passed the Women Protection Bill and Anti-Acid Throwing Bill, which envisage heavy penalties for offenders.

Senator Nilofar Bakhtiar, who had presented the bills, thanked the House for passing them without objection. The bills criminalise forced marriages and abuses like throwing acid, physical violence and sexual torture against women, and stipulate 14 years jail term with a fine of Rs1 million for offenders. The offences covered by these bills will be non-boilable [sic!] and non-compoundable. Addressing the House, Nilofar Bakhtiar termed it a historic day.

The Acid Control and Acid Crime Prevention (Amendment) Bill is an amendment in Pakistain Penal Code 1860. It increases the punishment for offenders up to life imprisonment and makes it mandatory for the offender to pay a fine of Rs1 million to the victim. The amendment in Section 336-B states, "Whoever causes hurt by corrosive substance shall be punished with imprisonment for life or imprisonment of either description which shall not be less than fourteen years and a minimum fine of one million rupees."

The new insertion in Section 336-A states, "Whosoever with intention or knowingly causes or attempts to cause hurt by means of a corrosive substance or any substance which is deleterious to human body when it is swallowed, inhaled, come in contact or received into human body or otherwise shall be said to cause hurt by corrosive substance."

In the month of November, the Prevention of Anti-Women Practices (Criminal Law Amendment) Act 2011, authored by Pakistain Moslem League-Quaid MNA Dr Donya Aziz, was passed by the Lower House after a couple of amendments. It outlined punishments for social practices like Wanni, Swara or Budla-i-Sulh, wherein women are traded to settle personal, family or tribal disputes. The act, hailed by commentators as a show of collective resolve by political parties to fight social taboos against women, deals with issues such as depriving women of their inheritance and forcing them into marriages to settle disputes.

Speaking on the occasion, Leader of the House Nayyar Hussain Bukhari said that it is a historic day as a private member's (Nilofar Bakhtiar) bill was made part of national law. He said it was an important bill, but stressed for creation of awareness among the masses about this law and called for efforts to stop violence against women.

The statement of objects and reasons of the bill say that several practices and customs were in vogue in the country which were not only against human dignity but also violate human rights
...not to be confused with individual rights, mind you...
. Such customary norms, which are contrary to Islamic injunctions, should be done away forthwith and the persons continuing such practices be dealt with severely by providing penal and financial liabilities. The bill also proposed prohibition of depriving woman of inheritance, prohibition of forced marriage and marriage with the holy Koran.

Earlier, during a heated debate over changes in the constitution to bring changes in the 18th Amendment and bringing back the curriculum and some part of health to federal government, the senators termed it a conspiracy against the spirit of devolution process. Senator Raza Rabbani said there was trust deficit among the provinces and federal government. Any attempt to derail the devolution process would be very disastrous, he warned. If some one has any reservations about curriculum, the issue could be resolved through CCI, Inter-provincial committee and other forum, he added.
