-Short Attention Span Theater-
Weighty memento: war veteran's secret revealed after his death
Ronald Brown stepped on a land mine while on a mission in France in August 1944.

The blast peppered his left leg with red-hot fragments and he was forced to crawl two miles to safety.

But because of medical conditions of the day it was thought safer to leave shrapnel in his body.

He survived the war but only ever told his family the basic story and said the accident had left him with a 'bad knee'.

Mr Brown told loved ones he still had a 'bullet' in his leg and asked his grandchildren not to sit on his knee because of the pain it caused.

But when he died last week aged 94 his family had him cremated and were stunned when staff handed them back a big bag of shrapnel.

The bag contained a whopping 6oz of bomb shrapnel that he had been carrying around for 60 years.

Daughter Jane Madden, 55, of Exeter, Devon said her father told her there was a bullet in his knee from the war, never mentioning the pile of fragments. She said: "I don't think he ever realised all that was in his leg - it weighed about six ounces.

"He'd said there was a bullet in his leg but I was imagining one romantic piece of metal.

"But when we went to scatter his ashes we asked whether the bullet had been found and they gave us this bag full of metal.

"It's just macabre really and amazing because he never used to complain about the pain. It just shows how brave he was."

Mr Brown, of Exeter, joined the East Yorkshire Regiment at the age of 21 and was a quartermaster when he suffered his injury.

He stepped on the booby trap while on manoeuvres in August 1944, two months after D Day.

DR Congo army says M23 rebels allied with Hutu FDLR
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Two rebel groups active in the Democratic Republic of the Congo's
...formerly the Congo Free State, Belgian Congo, Zaire, and who knows what else, not to be confused with the Brazzaville Congo or Republic of Congo, which is much smaller and much more (for Africa) stable. DRC gave the world Patrice Lumumba and Joseph Mobutu, followed by years of tedious civil war. Its principle industry seems to be the production of corpses. With a population of about 74 million it has lots of raw material...
restive east, the M23 and FDLR, have formed an alliance and clashed with the country's military, an army front man said Wednesday.

Lieutenant-Colonel Olivier Hamuli said the M23, a rebel group formed by army mutineers who have been battling with their former colleagues and sowing terror in the east, had teamed up with the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) in a bid to gain more territory in the region.

"Clashes began on Wednesday morning. These are M23 elements allied with the FDLR," Hamuli said. "They were fought off."

The M23 was formed in April by former fighters in the National Congress for the Defence of the People (CNDP), an ethnic Tutsi rebel group that was integrated into the army under a 2009 peace deal whose terms the mutineers claim were never fully implemented.

The FDLR's members are ethnic Hutus who were soldiers in the Rwandan army before being forced out of the country in the wake of the 1994 genocide, which killed 800,000 people -- mostly Tutsis.

M23 front man Vianney Kazarama denied that the group had formed an alliance with the FDLR.

Fidel Castro Reportedly Close to 'Neurovegetative State'
Fidel Castro death rumors are like the Nigerian e-mail scam of the news cycle -- they've been around forever and are never going away. So here we are: according to the Miami Herald, is Castro "very close to a neurovegetative state" -- not quite dead, but close:

Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and his state of health is so precarious that he has trouble feeding, speaking and recognizing people, said a Venezuelan physician who assured El Nuevo Herald that he has access to firsthand sources and information.

"He suffered an embolic stroke and recognizes absolutely no one," said José Marquina, a respected doctor who in the past has claimed to have direct information about the illness affecting President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela.

"The people with a condition of this nature have difficulty eating and, of course, they end up with total deficit in their neurologic capacities."

Castro is 86 years old now and his brother, Raúl, has been the President of Cuba since 2008. He hasn't been seen in public since this past March, and is reportedly receiving treatment at his home in Havana. The Herald also reported that Hugo Chavez flew to Castro's home this week to check on his health, but there is no indication exactly how close to death Fidel might be.

#1  A "Neurovegetative State" would clearly indicate his condition continues to improve.

#9  "Better stay away from him,
He'll rip your lungs out, Jim
I'd like to meet his tailor"

In his later years - Fidel started wearing some very nice tailored suits. Don't know if it was some sort of image re-make .... but he did "show" better in public :-) Like the lyrics say - I'd like to meet his tailor :-)

Greece, Spain 'in depression': Nobel winner Stiglitz
Greece and Spain are in "depression, not recession", Nobel prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz said on Wednesday, blaming tough austerity measures for their downward economic spiral. Stiglitz also maintained that the International Monetary Fund was "a little too optimistic" in its forecast last week that the eurozone economy would shrink by 0.4 percent in 2012 and rise by 0.2 percent next year.

#1  The socialists finally ran out of other people's money.

Of course the EU is trying to squeeze more from Germany. When Germany runs out the whole shebang liquifies and oozes into the ground. Maximum entropy.

#2  It used to be when you used other people's money to finance your life style, it was referred to as embezzlement. When they were caught, their new lifestyle usually was indeed very austere - four walls, a cot, and three meals a day.

Vaccinators fight superstition alongside polio
[Dawn] A three-day immunisation against polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set...
drive concluded in the city on Wednesday, with a majority of parents convinced of the need and cooperating with the immunisation teams.

But there were pockets in the city where some parents refused the polio vaccination because they had been told that it is a matter of fate.

"Our Maulvi sahib says Islam does not permit polio vaccination. It is bad for the health of our children, especially of the boys," Adil Khan, a migrant worker from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
living in the Fauji Colony, told Dawn.

"What putting some drops in the mouth of a child can do if he is fated to be stricken by polio," he asked, echoing the Imam of a mosque in the colony located on I.J. Principal Road, just across the boundary of Islamabad.

Many residents of the colony had refused to listen to the local health department's pep talk before the launch of the vaccination campaign and turned away the immunisation teams that arrived later.

A holy man of the colony had more sway over its residents, mostly hailing from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.

Mufti Bashir, the Sunni Deobandi holy man of the Masjid-e-Yasin, had reportedly issued a religious edict against the immunisation programme.

Polio vaccinators turned back by the community reported their dilemma to District Coordination Officer Saqib Zafar and Executive District Health Officer Dr Zafar Iqbal Gondal on Tuesday.
