Worker Dies After Being Cooked In Tuna Plant Oven
Actually, it was probably in the process of being cooked in the oven, not after it. Unless he was Beyond All Cares and Woe when he was put in there, in which case it would be before...
Authorities say a 62-year-old employee was cooked to death at a Southern Caliphornia seafood plant for tuna maker Bumble Bee Foods.
Way up there among the least favored methods of departure from the gene pool...
The Whittier Daily News reports Jose Melena was found Thursday shortly before 7 a.m. at the plant in Santa Fe Springs. Caliphornia Division of Occupational Safety and Health spokeswoman Erika Monterroza says it's unclear how the man ended up inside a cooking device called a "steamer machine."
Yeah. Did he fall or was he pushed? What were Hansel and Gretel doing when the 'accident' occurred?
The state department has launched an investigation into the accident.
"Legume! The game's afoot! Get me my saxophone!"
In a written statement, Bumble Bee Foods front man Pat Menke expressed condolences to Melena's family and says operations at the canning facility will be suspended at the plant until Monday.
It'll take them that long to get the caked-on gravy out of the oven...

New $100 bills stolen en route to Fed facility
Unknown thieves stole a "large amount" of newly-designed $100 bills bound for a Federal Reserve facility in New Jersey on Thursday, the FBI said.

Frank Burton, Jr., front man for the FBI's Philadelphia division, said the theft occurred at some point between when the shipment of bills landed at the Philadelphia airport on a commercial flight from Dallas at 10:20 Thursday morning, and when the shipment reached its New Jersey destination around 2:00 p.m., when the courier service transporting the bills reported some missing.

#1  A source says about $20,000 of the new bills were stolen from a Dallas-Philadelphia flight. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports, "The plane, which was not identified, arrived about 10:25 a.m. at Philadelphia International Airport, Special Agent Frank Burton Jr. said Friday. A courier service transporting the money reported the theft about 2 p.m. when its employees arrived at the Federal Reserve Building in East Rutherford, N.J., Burton said."

How did they know money was taken? Well, the container was opened.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Skydiver Felix Baumgartner lands highest ever jump
Interesting way to spend a Sunday...
Austrian Felix Baumgartner has broken the record for the highest ever skydive by jumping out of a balloon 128,000ft (24 miles, 39km) above New Mexico.

The 43-year-old was hoping also to break the sound barrier during his descent - although that mark awaits confirmation.

Video cameras relayed the moment Baumgartner stepped from his balloon capsule to begin his fall to Earth.

It took about 10 minutes for him to reach the desert surface below.
Only the last few thousand feet were negotiated by parachute.

-Signs, Portents, and the Weather-
Climate Change Means Less Ice. And More Ice.
Of course. Why didn't they think of this years ago?
While the North Pole has been losing sea ice over the years, the water nearest the South Pole has been gaining it. Antarctic sea ice hit a record 7.51 million square miles in September. That happened just days after reports of the biggest loss of Arctic sea ice on record.

While the Arctic is open ocean encircled by land, the Antarctic - about 1.5 times the size of the U.S. - is land circled by ocean, leaving more room for sea ice to spread. That geography makes a dramatic difference in the two polar climates.

The Arctic ice responds more directly to warmth. In the Antarctic, the main driver is wind, Maksym and other scientists say. Changes in the strength and motion of winds are now pushing the ice farther north, extending its reach.
I'm hoping phil_b has some insight here.
Mark Serreze, director of the snow and ice data center, says computer models have long predicted that Antarctica would not respond as quickly to global warming as other places. Since 1960, the Arctic has warmed the most of the world's regions, and Antarctica has warmed the least, according to NASA data.
So how does that relate to more ice? You just made an argument for not-shrinking-so-fast, not growing.

#5  What is not generally appreciated is how much closer to the equator sea ice is in the Southern Hemisphere.

And the increase in SH sea ice is mostly where its closest to the equator. And incidentally directly south of where I live.

Why does this matter?

In a word, albedo.

We are well past the spring equinox and that new sea ice is reflecting approx 80% of sunlight right back out to space, where previously 80% would have gone into warming the ocean.

This a positive cooling feedback. I'm making no predictions, but keep a close eye on this.
Posted by: phil_b || 10/14/2012 19:11 Comments || Top||

#6  Phil,

doesn't sea ice get less reflective with time?

maybe down to 40% or so depending on the sun angle
Posted by: lord garth || 10/14/2012 19:53 Comments || Top||

#7  lg, not in the southern hemisphere where almost all sea ice is seasonal, and black carbon deposition is minimal.

If the ice gets slushy as it melts, then that will decrease albedo, but I don't know if thats a significant factor. I believe most melt of SH sea ice is from below.

Africa North
Morocco expels illegal migrants
RABAT: Morocco has expelled dozens of African migrants desperately seeking a better life in Europe, among them survivors of a fatal attempt to reach the Spanish enclave of Melilla by boat, a rights group said yesterday.
Cheez, they're treating them as if they were Palestinians...
The authorities expelled about 30 illegal immigrants across the Algerian border late on Wednesday, including six women, one of whom was pregnant, and a 13-month-old baby, the Moroccan Association for Human Rights (AMDH) said.

The sub-Saharan migrants were deported at night in an "abusive manner," AMDH said, adding that many of them were on board the small boat that capsized on Tuesday as it attempted to reach Melilla from nearby Nador.

The boat, carrying 17 illegal migrants, capsized shortly before getting to Melilla and five people, including a small child and three women, are thought to have drowned, with the rest taken to hospital and then transferred to the police. The rights group said the migrants deported were in a desperate state, showing signs of fear, extreme fatigue, hunger and harassment, some of them having been attacked in Morocco.

It denounced the authorities for "continuing to play the role of European policeman, in a way that undermines the official discourse and does not respect internationally recognized human rights."

Britain
Don't mess with a Gurkha, even a retired one
A former Gurkha soldier fought off a mugger in spite of having a 6in knife blade jammed into his arm -- then held on to his attacker for 15 minutes while he waited for the police to arrive.

Shop owner Taitex Phlamachha had just been to a cashpoint with his wife when he was pushed up against a wall and told to 'hand over the money' or get stabbed. Mr Phlamachha, 38, from Maidstone, Kent, who is a second-dan black belt in karate, said: 'I tried to warn him, "Don't mess with Gurkhas. We're trained to fight." But he didn't listen.'

The tussling pair fell to the ground and the mugger knelt on Mr Phlamachha's chest before trying to stab him in the stomach. But the Gurkha blocked him then disabled the knifeman with a kick before holding on to his clothes with one arm.

Mr Phlamachha, a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, did not know how badly he was injured until he saw the knife handle on the road. He said: 'I was in pain but it was only when I got to hospital the blade was discovered inside me.'

A 39-year-old man from Maidstone has been remanded in custody charged with attempted robbery and other offences.

Kyrgyzstan Says Toppled President's Son Arrested in London
[An Nahar] The son of Kyrgyzstan's ousted president has been tossed in the slammer
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
in London after an extradition request from the United States, according to the Kyrgyz presidency and British diplomats.

The son of ex-president Kurmanbek Bakiyev had applied for asylum in Britannia after Kyrgyzstan's new authorities accused him of embezzlement and abuse of power following his father's ouster in 2010 in violent street protests.

"At the request of Kyrgyz and American sides, British law enforcement authorities tossed in the slammer
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
Maxim Kurmanbekovich Bakiyev on the morning of October 12 in London on charges of serious crimes," said a statement posted late Friday on the president's website.

Nicknamed "the Prince" for his penchant for luxury, the president's younger son Maxim Bakiyev, 34, was a top official in his father's regime heading the country's Central Agency for Development.

He also handled fuel supply contracts for the Manas U.S. airbase in Kyrgyzstan that is key to American military operations in Afghanistan.

The Kyrgyz statement said that Britannia was "examining the possibility of extraditing Maxim Bakiyev to the USA", as there is no extradition treaty between Britannia and Kyrgyzstan.

Polio case detected in Kurram
[Dawn] A polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set...
case has been detected in far-flung Tatan Ragha area of central Kurram tribal agency, medics said.

Dr Sultan Ali, medical superintendent at agency headquarters hospital Parachinar, confirmed the polio case.

He said that poliovirus was detected in the 18-month-old Sabia, daughter of Mohammad Ibrahim, in Tatan Ragha area of central Kurram in September.

He said the polio drops could not be applied to children in the far-flung areas of central Kurram due to security reasons. He said for the last three years the unrest and militancy forced the vaccination teams to stay away from the sensitive areas.

'Habitual groom' thrashed by in-laws
[Dawn] A man who contracted 'love marriage' with a girl after divorcing her two elder sisters was thrashed by their family members when he came to the sessions court along with his new bride to record statement on Friday.

Reports said Adnan of Khalid Town married Lubna of Farid Town a few years ago. He later divorced Lubna and contracted marriage with her younger sister, Aqsa.

After sometime, he divorced Aqsa too and married her youngest sister, Anam, a few days ago.

On Friday, the couple arrived at the sessions court where Anam recorded her statement saying she wanted to live with Adnan.

The court allowed her to go with her husband and ordered the police to escort the couple to their home for their safety.

However,
corruption finds a dozen alibis for its evil deeds...
when the came out of the court room, Adnan's in-laws nabbed the three-time 'groom' and gave a good thrashing to him and his brother, Zubair, with shoes and slaps.

The police intervened and took the couple in protective custody and later released them.

3 book publishers settle price collusion lawsuit
Three US book publishers have agreed to settle a lawsuit that accused them of price fixing ebooks sold for Amazon.com's Kindle ebook reader, according to English language news reports.

According to a Reuters new item posted on the Reuters website Saturday, the three publishers were identified as News Corp's HarperCollins Publishers Inc, CBS Corp's Simon & Schuster Inc and Lagardere SCA's Hachette Book Group. The lawsuit charged that the three publishers fixed high prices on print as well as ebook products.

Amazon.com is not party to the lawsuit.

The settlement only affects Amazon.com customers who purchased ebooks from those three publishers between April, 2010 and May, 2012. The settlement is said to be worth between USD $0.30 and $1.32 per unit sold per customer.

The settlement is expected to be approved in February, 2013.

Florida Passes Plan For Racially-Based Academic Goals
h/t Gates of Vienna
The Florida State Board of Education passed a plan that sets goals for students in math and reading based upon their race.

On Tuesday, the board passed a revised strategic plan that says that by 2018, it wants 90 percent of Asian students, 88 percent of white students, 81 percent of Hispanics and 74 percent of black students to be reading at or above grade level. For math, the goals are 92 percent of Asian kids to be proficient, whites at 86 percent, Hispanics at 80 percent and blacks at 74 percent.

#3  According to the article, Black and Hispanic parents are not at all happy:

But Palm Beach County School Board vice-chairwoman Debra Robinson isn’t buying the rationale.

“I’m somewhere between complete and utter disgust and anger and disappointment with humanity,” Robinson told the Post. She said she has been receiving complaints from upset black and Hispanic parents since the state board took its action this week.

Robinson called the state board’s actions essentially “proclaiming racism” and said she wants Palm Beach County to continue to educate every child with the same expectations, regardless of race.

#5  Given that US academia has been shot through with racist policies and attitudes for decades, this is not in the least bit surprising. It's no different from 'affirmative action' (aka racial discrimination),it's just less easily dissimulated with obfuscating propaganda.

#6  No amount of money or resources can make up for parental attitudes [if there are parents present] that won't emphasize the importance of education. For all the money put into the formal education system in the last twenty years, the variance in improvement has not been proportionately demonstrated. One of the foundations of education is discipline which has been undermined both by lawyers/judges from the outside and nebbish administrators often operating 'zero tolerance' programs in fear of the former. So no one rocks the boat, clean reports are submitted, and real education doesn't happen because the system is about job security and retirement, not education.

#7  It's not racial, it's cultural. Come cultures value education and parents make sure their children utilise it (however meagre the states ration of edumakataion is) and then do further work AT HOME.
Some cultures view children as a way to extra benefit money, er and that's it.

#8  The timing of this decision by the Sunshine Solons will prove to be most unfortunate. SCOTUS is currently reconsidering the constitutionality of racist admission policies at colleges and universities. Anthony Kennedy is going to look at this and see the inevitable Balkanization of America if we continue down this road. Good bye Affirmative Action. And don't let the door hit you on the way out.

#9  Do I detect a whiff of 'be careful' in posting comments -- we don't want to give the you-know-whos an excuse.

#10  of course the way around this problem is to abolish the proficiency test or allow proficiency tests to be based on a subjective analysis based on a large panel of non-teaching educational professionals, all of whom are paid large sums

#11  The bigots of the days of my youth would have told you that whites are smarter than blacks. They'd likely have told you whites are smarter than Hispanics if they thought about it.

The descendants of the bigots of yesterday seem to be setting education policy.

#14  Under the new EducationCare, government panels will decide who graduates, attends institutions of higher learning, and gets jobs.

Oh wait!

#16  And if they can't make those, we'll lower them even more. After all, it's for the teachers union children!

#17  Hell, in 10 years I'm sure they'll just assign you a grade based on background, race, parental income and how much they dislike you.
