[Independent] California’s governor has overruled a parole board’s recommendation to free the youngest follower of Charles Manson from prison.
Gavin Newsom said Leslie Van Houten is still a threat, even though she has spent nearly half a century behind bars.
It was the third time a governor has halted the release of the youngest member of Manson’s murderous cult.
"While I commend Ms Van Houten for her efforts at rehabilitation and acknowledge her youth at the time of the crimes, I am concerned about her role in these killings and her potential for future violence," he wrote in his decision.
"Ms Van Houten was an eager participant in the killing of the LaBiancas and played a significant role."

I never said Newsom is stupid, just sleazy as hell, and this is an issue that is simple enough even for Californians to understand. I doubt seriously that he gives a rat's ass about Van Houten but he knows he's toast in the next election if he ever grants parole to any member of the Manson cult. That whole Manson thing traumatized California and especially Los Angeles. He can't afford to have Hollyweird turn on him.

She'd have been a threat to Newsom's career if he paroled her. Other than that, probably not much. But I'm OK with letting her rot in prison.

By that logic even ISIS brides are not much of threats. But we don't want them in our society. She represents something vile, an idea of animal hedonism that can still find many takers in American youth. Do keep in mind how many crazies wrote letters to Manson.
Besides, part of retributive justice is also that the recipient shant enjoy what he/she has deprived others of.
[The South African] Sad news is reaching us from Stellenbosch on Monday morning: Stefan Smit, the owner of Louisenhof Wine Estates in Stellenbosch, was the victim of a murder over the weekend.
Who is Stefan Smit?
Smit had gained something of a national profile after he was interviewed by the New York Times in March, speaking to the publication about the threat of land grabs on his property. The wine merchant had previously complained about how citizens from a nearby township had begun erecting shacks at the back of his farm.
The farmer was forced to get a court interdict against the squatters. Sadly, the letter of the law couldn’t prevent Smit from meeting a brutal fate. Police have confirmed that four armed men gained access to the wine estate via an unlocked door, before opening fire on the 62-year-old. His wife and a family friend survived the attack.
Stellenbosch farm murder victim was "embroiled in land dispute"
The Stellenbosch vineyard backs on to the township of Kayamandi. Over the course of a few months, a settlement bordering the farm was established. Although he had it dismantled by the Red Ants, the squatters were undeterred and rebuilt shacks on the fields. You can learn more about this from one of our previous articles on the matter.
When Smit spoke to the NYT, he gave a chilling prophecy on what he thought would happen if the dispute carried on. Within a few months of giving this interview, his worst fears have been realised.
[Chicago Tribune via PJ] At least 52 people were shot, eight of them fatally, across Chicago over the weekend, the most violent of the year as summer gets underway, with a toll even higher than during the long Memorial Day holiday just a week earlier.
More than half the victims were wounded during a 12-hour burst of gunfire from Friday evening to Saturday morning. At least four of the 31 people shot during that time died after attacks on the West and South sides. At least one other person over the weekend was fatally stabbed, bringing the homicide toll to nine.
The level of violence, which typically spikes during the summer months, eclipsed that of the three-day Memorial Day weekend when at least 43 people were shot, seven of them fatally. Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson held a news conference Monday morning, calling the level of violence "despicable."
In a statement Sunday night, the department’s chief spokesman said Johnson ordered "targeted patrols" in areas of potential retaliation by gangs. "Those efforts have resulted in 19 arrests on gun-related charges and 81 illegal weapons seized since Friday evening," Anthony Guglielmi said. "Several people of interest are also being questioned in relation to some of our incidents and detectives have good video leads in others."

Yet I am passing flags on public buildings flying at half staff- not for Chicago’s carnage, but for a shooting 800 miles away in Virginia Beach.
If Chicago would lower flags to mark each weekends score card, they wouldn’t go back up to full until November when the cold return season.
[COURIER-JOURNAL] A pastor in Eastern Kentucky was tossed in the calaboose Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out! this week after he allegedly sought sex with a minor via text messages, according to police.
The Prestonsburg Police Department said in a news release that Bobby J. Blackburn, 26, turned himself in Wednesday without incident and was charged with prohibited use of an electronic communication system to procure a minor to commit a sex act.
Blackburn is pastor of Elevate Church in Prestonsburg, according to a LinkedIn profile. He is also the owner of Giovanni's, a pizza restaurant in Prestonsburg, WYMT reported.
A phone number listed on Elevate Church's website was not accepting calls Friday. An email sent to the church was also not returned Friday.
An employee at Giovanni's who answered the phone Friday said Blackburn was "not here right now."
Prestonsburg coppers obtained a warrant for Blackburn's arrest May 24, according to an arrest citation, after a girl showed a police sergeant images of an iMessage conversation she had with Blackburn.

A pastor from East Kentucky was tossed in the calaboose,
For morals too loose.
He sought sex with a minor on the internet.
A young lass who’s name was Annette.
She conjured-up in his mind, fantasies of passion and sweat.
He posed as a teen and sent the young lady an email.
That was about to land him a long stretch in jail.
The email was steamy and frantic.
He said in his defense when caught for this illegal antic,
Your honor, it was not sex,
But only innocent text,
The judge, an Obama appointee said: It just so happens that Annette is my underage daughter,
You rotter.
And I don’t take kindly to some pastor corrupting her innocence; if I could you would get manslaughter.
Before I seal your fate “Pastor Bobby Blackburn, are you a Republican or Democrat asked the magistrate?”
“I am a Democrat your honor but what does that have to do with my fate?”
Everything son. Because if you are a Democrat, sexting with a minor is legal in this State.
The sentence is not a justice miscarriage.
Tell me son, would you consider marriage?

A preacher walks into a diner.
"Hi. Gimme a steak for this shiner."
"Of all of God's children,"
Sez Joe, "It's bewilderin'
You keep seekin' sex with a miner."

Actually one of the very few reasonable initiatives out of SF pols I've heard in a while.
The critics should either open their homes to these poor 'unfortunates' or shut their pieholes.
Bets are that it will never get off the ground.

Too many of us seem to be living in the Eternal Now, with no knowledge of what it took to get here, no idea of what it takes to maintain what we've got and a childish expectation that everything will somehow magically continue to be just like it is. [DFW.CBSLOCAL] Dallas police are investigating after the body of a transgender woman was found in White Rock Lake on Saturday.
Dallas Fire-Rescue pulled her body from the water in the afternoon around 5:30 p.m.
She was identified as Chynal Lindsey, 26, a transgender woman from Arlington.
Chief Hall said there were signs of “homicidal violence” in Lindsey’s death.
At least three African American transgender women were attacked and/or murdered in the city since 2017, including Muhlaysia Booker.
Booker’s death is similar to two other unsolved cases in one way – all the victims are transgender women.

Man, the propagandists must be conflicted with this one. Transgender but African American, promote one descriptive but bury the other (as in Chicago, and elsewhere, black on black crime). What to sensationalize?
[Stripes] For more than half a century, Raymond Loring Chambers believed he was one of the fortunate few who survived World War II unscathed.
For that, the 93-year-old Navy veteran was grateful. When his three years were up, Chambers returned to Michigan in 1946. He was 21, had seen combat, but came home with no medals. He just put the war behind him.
Chambers became a father, went to work selling soft serve ice cream in a traveling carnival, and learned about "love at first sight" the day he met the animal keeper's daughter. They married four weeks after the day they met. They have now spent 60 years together, raising children and grandchildren in their Gibsonton home.
"I was lucky," he said. "I've lived a wonderful life."
Turns out, he wasn't the war. Nor did he actually escape injury.
Tears welled in Chambers eyes as U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Tampa, presented him Friday with the medals he never knew he had been eligible for while fighting in the Pacific theater. The medal ceremony took place at the Jan Kaminis Platt Regional Library as Chambers; wife, children and grandchildren looked on.
Chambers was only 18 when he was first deployed to fight with the Navy special forces alongside the 5th Marine Division. Yet he survived one of the theaters bloodiest clashes in 1945: the Battle of Iwo Jima.
"During this brutal battle that went on for weeks Mr. Chambers was actually shot in the leg," Castor said. But it wasn't until a decade ago that shrapnel was discovered in his leg ‐ six decades after he last saw combat.
After a long confirmation process, the Department of Defense granted Chambers the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with Two Bronze Stars; one for his "heroic" achievement and service and one for his "meritorious" achievement and service in a combat zone, Castor said. He was also presented with the American Campaign Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. Because heroes remain heroes?

[Dhaka Tribune] A ninth grader was allegedly kidnapped, raped and killed in Poddarpara, of the district’s Lohagara upazila.
The dear departed, Nupur, 14, was a ninth grader of the area’s RKK Janata High School.
Police recovered her body from Lohagara Health Complex on Sunday evening.
The girl’s family alleged she was kidnapped on May 26 and later killed in June 2 after almost a week of confinement inside a rented house in that area.
Nupur’s uncles Bacchu Mia and Abdul Karim said: "We found Nupur’s dead body seven days after her abduction. She was kidnapped by miscreants after she left home for tuition on May 26."
They accused Rabiul Islam Rubel, 25 of Brakkhandanga and Azad Sarder, 35 of Jalalsi village, of abducting their niece on her way home from tuition.
They suspect the two of taking her to a rented house, raping her repeatedly and killing her, while also suspecting the house owner, Mini, of being involved in the crimes.
Officer-in-charge of Lohagora cop shoppe Mokarrom Hossain said: "On primary investigation it looks like a suicide. We suggested Nupur’s family to file for a pre-meditated murder case against the accused. We will work on the incident after her family files a case."
Vice Chairman of Lohagora Upazila Gay Pareehad Farhana Yasmin Eti said Mini has a notorious reputation in the area, and her involvement may not be surprising.
The house owner Mini denied all accusations and said Nupur rented her house a week ago, and that she had taken her to the health complex after she got sick on Sunday evening.

[ALMASDARNEWS] Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov has declined to comment on a Wall Street Journal article claiming that Russia is withdrawing its military advisers from Venezuela.
"You are asking the wrong party. You should ask the companies that maintain the equipment provided to Venezuela earlier," he told news hounds.
At the same time, the Kremlin front man pointed out that the information "has already been rejected by Russia’s side."
The Wall Street Journal claimed earlier that over the past few months, Russia’s Rostec State Corporation, responsible for training Venezuelan military personnel and providing consultations on weapons supply contacts, reduced the number of its advisers from about a thousand to several dozen.
The newspaper added that the pullout was due to a lack of new contracts and the fact that the Maduro government was no longer capable of paying for the corporation’s services.
A Rostec front man told TASS earlier on Monday that Rostec’s personnel in Venezuela had remained unchanged for years. "The number of military advisers mentioned in a Wall Street Journal article is exaggerated tens of times," he said.
"The office staff has remained unchanged for many years. As for technicians, they arrive in the country from time to time to maintain and repair the equipment provided earlier. Just recently, the maintenance of a batch of aircraft was completed," the front man added.

[DAWN] RAW ... India's Research and Analysis Wing, Pakistain's equivalent of the Boogie Man... ALPINDI: All three police officials accused of involvement in a gang rape case have been dismissed from service, and the victim’s stolen money has been recovered from the suspects, Superintendent of Police (SP) Saddar Rai Mazhar Iqbal said on Sunday.
Addressing a presser, he said that the forensic laboratory report on DNA has not yet been received, but samples from all the suspects and the victim have been sent for testing.
He said the victim was offered police security and the option to move to Darul Aman, which she refused.
He said the police would move according to the law after the DNA report is received. He added that all three accused constables have been tossed in the calaboose You have the right to remain silent... and dismissed from police service.
The victim earlier this week had disputed an earlier statement she recorded with the magistrate, in which she had alleged that she was raped by four people including three police officials.
She told Area Magistrate Sumaira Alamgeer that she wanted to record a new statement because her last one was made under pressure.
Mr Iqbal said that the four suspects were arrested soon after the victim’s complaint was heard, and she recorded a statement in the court of the area magistrate on May 24 in which she identified the suspects.
She later told the area magistrate that she had been influenced and pressured by the media and NGOs to record her statement before the court. She also prayed for the cancellation of her earlier statement and sought to record a new one, which she said would be made of her own free will.
However, if you can't say something nice about a person some juicy gossip will go well... the area magistrate rejected her prayer and said she could not record another statement, and that her earlier statement was recorded of her own will and without pressure.
The four suspects were brought to the court of the judicial magistrate for further extension of their physical remand for another five days, but the judicial magistrate rejected the request and sent them to jail until June 11.
The victim was assaulted while she was out for Sehri in Bahria Town Phase-8 on the night between May 15 and May 16.
She alleged in her FIR that she was kidnapped and sexually assaulted by four people including three police officials.

[AP] People with a DNA mutation that reduces their chance of HIV infection may die sooner, according to a study that suggests tinkering with a gene to try to fix one problem may cause others.
The study authors cited the case of the Chinese researcher who tried to produce this mutation in twin girls before their birth, to reduce their risk for HIV. His work, which produced the first gene-edited babies, was widely condemned as unethical and risky, and the new paper illustrates one reason for concern.
"You should consider all the effects of mutations you induce," said Rasmus Nielsen of the University of California, Berkeley, senior author of the paper, released Monday by the journal Nature Medicine.

Having worked on a systems integration project that involved the Navy, Air Force and Army I can tell you that, since this plane was targeted for everybody, the turf wars were insane.
Each sub-routine in the system had inter-service fights you wouldn't believe. Oh yeah, this was a logistics system.

Basically it's a flying Swiss knife, trying to do everything and failing at them. sometime a buck knife is all you need to get the job done.
Bean counters (and prolly mission planners) love the one-size-fits-all concept because it simplifies their job. A purpose-built tool will always kick ass over some multi-role thingie. Hell, one-size-fits-all doesn't even work for socks.
