-Signs, Portents, and the Weather-
Days After a Funeral in a Georgia Town, Coronavirus ‘Hit Like a Bomb'
Forget the wings and key lime cake. Stay at home and live !
[NYT] It was an old-fashioned Southern funeral.

There was a repast table crammed with casseroles, Brunswick stew, fried chicken and key lime cake. Andrew Jerome Mitchell, a retired janitor, was one of 10 siblings. They told stories, debated for the umpteenth time how he got the nickname Doorface.

People wiped tears away, and embraced, and blew their noses, and belted out hymns. They laughed, remembering. It was a big gathering, with upward of 200 mourners overflowing the memorial chapel, so people had to stand outside.

Dorothy Johnson has gone over the scene in her mind over the last month, asking herself who it was who brought the virus to her brother’s funeral.

"We don’t know who the person was," she said. "It would help me to know."

During the weeks that followed, illnesses linked to the coronavirus have torn through her hometown, Albany, Ga., with about two dozen relatives falling ill, including six of her siblings. Ms. Johnson herself was released from an isolation ward to the news that her daughter, Tonya, was in grave condition, her heart rate dropping.

Like the Biogen conference in Boston and a 40th birthday party in Westport, Conn., the funeral of Andrew Jerome Mitchell on Feb. 29 will be recorded as what epidemiologists call a "super-spreading event," in which a small number of people propagate a huge number of infections.

This rural county in southwest Georgia, 40 miles from the nearest interstate, now has one of the most intense clusters of the coronavirus in the country.

With a population of only 90,000, Dougherty County has registered 24 deaths, far more than any other county in the state, with six more possible coronavirus deaths under investigation, according to Michael L. Fowler, the local coroner. Ninety percent of the people who died were African-American, he said.

The region’s hospitals are overloaded with sick and dying patients, having registered nearly 600 positive cases. Last week, Gov. Brian Kemp dispatched the National Guard to help stage additional intensive care beds and relieve exhausted doctors and nurses.

Ms. Johnson said that she assumed one of the guests had brought the virus to her brother’s funeral, where "you hug and you kiss and you embrace." But she had no more information than that.

"Really, there is no face to what is going on in Albany," she said.

CNN's Chris Cuomo Tests Positive for the Coronavirus
[AmGreatness] CNN anchor Chris Cuomo announced Tuesday that he has been diagnosed with the coronavirus and is quarantined in the basement of his home. Cuomo is the third CNN to have tested positive for COVID-19.

"I have been exposed to people in recent days who have subsequently tested positive, and I’ve had fevers, chills and shortness of breath," Cuomo wrote in a post online, adding that he hoped he hadn’t spread the virus to his wife Cristina and his kids.

The anchor said he will continue to anchor his 9 p.m. program "Cuomo Prime Time" from his basement.

"We will all beat this thing by being strong, tough, and united!" the anchor added, sounding almost Trumpian.

Cuomo was at CNN’s offices in New York City last Friday, according to CNN media correspondent Brian Stelter.

On Monday, he anchored his show from his home where he interviewed his brother, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.During the interview, Cuomo asked the governor if he was thinking about replacing Joe Biden on the Democrat ticket.

"Let me ask you something. With all of this adulation that you’re getting for doing your job, are you thinking about running for President? Tell the audience," Chris Cuomo asked.

"No. No," the governor replied. When Chris Cuomo pressed his brother further about a presidential bid, Andrew Cuomo continued to flatly say no, he hadn’t even thought about it.For the time being, Cuomo is "feeling fine," according to Stelter.

Home Quarantine Repeats China's Mistake, Doctors Say
[Bloomberg] "Due to lockdown, most of the transmission that's actually happening in many countries now is happening in the household at family level," Mike Ryan, head of health emergencies at the World Health Organization, said in a briefing on Monday. "Now we need to go and look in families and find those people that may be sick and remove them and isolate them in a safe and dignified manner."

Wuhan began quarantining all mild cases in makeshift hospitals converted from offices, stadiums and gymnasiums in early February, a move that helped dramatically slow the spread of the virus. The city where the virus first emerged last December has successfully contained the outbreak, according to official figures that show few new infections
...does WHO really believe official Chinese figures after all that has happened?
even as the pandemic accelerates in other countries.

Liang said his team advised Italy to follow China's lead to forcibly isolate patients with mild symptoms from their families. In China, a study of one province showed that 80% of cluster infections originated from people told to rest at home, according to Xiao Ning, a researcher from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention who was part of the team.
Want to know what happened in China? Ask some Chinese in Italy.

This wouldn't work as well as lockdown, because of asymptomatic spreaders.

Fearing Gaza virus spread, Hamas preps for mass quarantines
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) ‐ When Nima Amraa returned to the Gaza Strip from neighboring Egypt earlier this month, she was surprised to learn she was being placed in a makeshift quarantine center set up by the ruling Hamas group.

But her initial jitters turned to fear when two fellow travelers in another facility tested positive for the coronavirus ‐ the first cases to be confirmed in Gaza.

"Once there were cases of the virus spreading, we started to feel afraid and disappointed," Amraa, a 30-year-old journalist, said by phone from quarantine, where she has spent a week and a half sleeping in a room with five other women and sharing a bathroom.

The virus found a way into Gaza, even though the Mediterranean enclave has been largely cut off from the world by an Israeli-Egyptian blockade since Hamas militants seized it 13 years ago.

On Monday, the Health Ministry said a new case was confirmed among the quarantined, bringing the total to 10. It added all of them were in good condition and receiving care at a special field hospital.

Gov. McMaster orders closure of public accesses to all South Carolina beaches
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WMBF) ‐ South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster issued an executive order on Monday that closes all public access points to the state’s beaches.

The executive order also closes all public boat ramps, landings and other access points on the state’s lakes, rivers and waterways.

"As a result of behavior observed this past weekend by the Department of Natural Resources and SLED, it has become necessary to close public access to our state’s beaches, and to close boat ramps and landings on our state’s lakes, rivers and waterways,"McMaster said. "This is unfortunate for those who chose to responsibly follow the instructions of our public health officials, but it is a necessary action to prevent the spread of this dangerous virus."

According to the S.C. Beach Access and Water Quality Guide, there are more than 360 public beach access points in Horry County alone.

Coronaplague Roundup: FDA Says Hydroxychloroquine And Chloroquine Can Be Used To Treat Coronavirus
[NEWSWEEK] The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of two anti-malaria drugs to treat patients infected by the new coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
On Sunday, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) said in a statement that chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine could be prescribed to teens and adults with COVID-19 "as appropriate, when a clinical trial is not available or feasible," after the FDA issued an Emergency Use Authorization. (EUA) That marked the first EUA for a drug related to COVID-19 in the U.S., according to the statement.

According to Johns Hopkins University, over 720,000 cases have been confirmed, more than 34,000 people have died, and over 152,000 have recovered since the pandemic started in China late last year.

Both chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine are used to treat diseases including malaria, and have "shown activity in laboratory studies against coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19)," the HHS stated.

"Anecdotal reports suggest that these drugs may offer some benefit in the treatment of hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Clinical trials are needed to provide scientific evidence that these treatments are effective."

Under the EUA, health care providers and patients must be given fact sheets outlining the known risks and drug interactions of the medications.

The HSS said it accepted 30 million doses of hydroxychloroquine sulfate from an arm of the pharmaceutical company Novartis, and one million of chloroquine phosphate from Bayer Pharmaceuticals to be used for treating hospitalized COVID-19 patients or in clinical trials.

Study raises hope that blood plasma can treat coronavirus patients
[BIZPACREVIEW] A preliminary study released Friday found that blood serum from people who recovered from coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)

was effective at treating critically ill patients, raising hope that the technique will curtail a pandemic that has already killed more than 30,000 people around the globe.

The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, looked at only five patients, and the authors of the report acknowledged the need for more extensive research. But it showed promising results, and health officials have already expressed optimism that blood transfers can be used to fight the new coronavirus strain.

"That’s one of our top priorities," Dr. Anthony Fauci, the U.S. government’s top expert on infectious disease, said in a March 20 interview regarding clinical trials for convalescent serum.

Fauci expressed confidence in the technique because it has proved effective during other pandemics, including the Spanish flu outbreak in 1918 and the SARS outbreak in 2003.

All five patients in the study, conducted in Shenzhen, China, have dramatically improved since receiving injections of blood plasma from recovered patients.

The patients, who ranged in age from 36 to 65, were all on ventilators suffering from acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) when the were provided plasma treatments.

Body temperatures normalized within three days for four out of the five patients following plasma transfusions, according to the study. ARDS in four of the patients cleared up within 12 days of the transfusion.

Three of the patients were taken off of ventilators within two weeks of the treatment. Viral loads also decreased in the patients, and their scores on a test that gauges potential organ failure showed improvements.

USNS Comfort arrives in NYC
[NYPOST] The USNS Comfort hospital ship arrived in New York Harbor on Monday morning to aid in the coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)

fight.

Dispatched Saturday by President Trump from Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia, the craft arrived at Manhattan’s Pier 90 at 10:42 a.m., as helicopters hovered above and a few dozen onlookers braved social-distancing regulations to catch a glimpse.

The vessel has a capacity of 1,000 beds, sorely needed as the contagion continues to strain the capacities of brick-and-mortar facilities.

corpse count in New York City surged to 914 on Monday afternoon, accelerated by six hellish hours that saw the tally spike by 124 ‐ or one death every 2.9 minutes.

As of a 10:30 a.m. update from City Hall, the five boroughs had seen 36,221 confirmed cases of the contagion, with 790 confirmed fatalities.

But by 4:30 p.m., the number of cases had ticked up to 38,087 ‐ while the deaths went kaboom! to 914, according to City Hall.

Of the more than 38,000 cases, 7,741 patients, or about 20 percent, are hospitalized, the statistics show.

Queens remains the hardest hit borough by a sizable margin, with 12,756 cases, or just over a third.

Brooklyn (with 10,171 cases; 27-percent) comes in second, followed by The Bronx (6,925; 18-percent), Manhattan (6,060; 16-percent) and Staten Island (2,140; six-percent).

Monday’s horrifying leap followed a similar period on Sunday in which 98 deaths were logged.

During a press briefing earlier Monday, Gov. Andrew Sonny Cuomo reported that the Empire State as a whole had been hit by 66,497 diagnoses, with 1,218 deaths.

Gov. McMaster orders closure of public accesses to all South Carolina beaches
[WMBFNews] ‐ South Carolina Gov.

#15  A bit of perspective, from the CDC. For the period ending March 21, the U.S. CDC reports -

CDC estimates that so far this season there have been at least 39 million flu illnesses, 400,000 hospitalizations and 24,000 deaths from flu.

That's the regular, old fashioned seasonal flu, kiddies, not the Chinese Plague (AKA COVID-19).
And -

Nationally, the percent of laboratory specimens testing positive for influenza at clinical laboratories continued to decrease while ILI [influenza like illnesses] activity continued to increase. More people are seeking care for respiratory illness due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Indicating the usual spring decline of the flu.  However, because of the pandemic, more folks who might have stayed home with the drugstore medications are now calling the doctor, fearing they have COVID-19)

#16  Low dose hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil), in combination with azithromycin (Z-pak) may just be working. 3 sources I have found:

Research virologist in France followed his initial small test with a better documented one and showed similar success with 60 patients, only 1 death, 86yo who was "highly advance" before treatment, all the others have recovered.

https://techstartups.com/2020/03/27/coronavirus-cure-new-results-french-study-shows-combination-hydroxychloroquine-plaquenil-azithromycin-successfully-treated-80-coronavirus-patients-significant-dr/

Also Dr. William Grace Lennox Hospital NYC (100+ cases treated): ‘Thanks to hydroxychloroquine, we have not had a death in our hospital.’

And then there is Dr. Vladimir Zelenko. Amazing if true, but a bit skeptical until data published. He is a board certified MD family medicine long in practice in the Haisidic community. He defines success as “Not to die.” He has directly diagnosed/tested and treated 699 patient, zero patients died, zero patients intubated, and four hospitalizations.

Its hydroxychloroquine, in combination with azithromycin (Z-Pak), an antibiotic to treat secondary infections, and zinc sulfate, over a period of 5 days for routine cases. Cost is about $20. Apparently the doses are low enough to control for prolonged QT risk.

Of course this method doesn't get any researchers glory or grants, doesn't enrich drug companies since these are easily and quickly and cheaply manufactured generic drugs 50+ years old, and since it can be used now, off label, it doesn't reinforce the power of the FDA bureaucrats in DC.

Venezuela’s Simón Bolívar satellite stops working
[janes.com] The Venezuelan government has announced that its Simón Bolívar (VeneSat-1) satellite is no longer operational, without citing specific causes. The platform was an important component of the country’s defence and telecommunications sector.

In 2018, then-head of Venezuela's National Anti-Drug Office (Oficina Nacional Antidrogas: ONA), General Juan Grillo stated that, “thanks to Simón Bolívar, we have connected our radars, which allows us to identify whether an aircraft is carrying out illicit activities or not.”

“Due to a fault, the satellite will no longer carry out its telecommunication operations,” a brief 25 March communique by the Venezuelan Ministry of Science and Technology explained.

#2  I don't know why we are not doing this. I realize the WHO/CDC/NIS said a surgical mask will not protect *you* from the virus, but it will keep you from spreading it to others. Imagine a hospital operating room. Everyone is wearing a surgical mask so they don't spread their germs to the patient.

I'll wager the reason our Top Men said masks don't work is because no one thought to stockpile a bunch for the citizenry. A pity since they are cheap, non-perishable and don't need a lot of storage space. Same with latex gloves.

#6  Apparently New York City, at least, would have a plentiful supply of face masks and such if China had not nationalized the American factory over there and confiscated NYC’s order as it was about to ship. Adding insult to injury, they subsequently sold the entire thing to Spain. Whether this was the shipment that mostly had to be rejected for not meeting standards is unclear to me.

COVID-19 carrying dog-handler volunteers to train dog to diagnose, test coronavirus
[Arutz 7] - Israel Dog Unit (IDU) dog-handler Bram Settenbrino, who is presently quarantined with the coronavirus, volunteered to pilot test and train his personal weapons-sniffing service canine to detect the scent of the coronavirus.

Bram, who joins dozens of others quarantined with coronavirus in the Tel Aviv Dan Panorama Hotel that was recently converted into a quarantine facility by the Israeli defense establishment, said, "I'm in a rare position as I'm still diagnosed with coronavirus together with many others who have tested positive. It's a godsend that I happen to be a volunteer dog-handler of a service dog that is a trained cadaver and weapons-sniffing detection dog. That's what we do. And if I can make a small contribution to save many lives, I am happy to do that."

Settenbrino continued: "Additionally, even after I G-d willing recover, I'm less likely to contract coronavirus and am thus in a unique position to test and train with many coronavirus patients. I asked the head of the IDU as well as the staff at the Hotel to permit me to have my service dog ‐ Dana admitted to join me here so that we can commence immediate training under the auspices of expert trainers who will guide me. I know that the chances are slim, but what have we to lose?"

Israel retools missile production line to mass produce ventilators
[YNet] - Israel has converted a missile production facility to mass produce ventilators and offset a shortage of the life-saving machines as the coronavirus continues to spread, the Defense Ministry said on Tuesday.

...The Israeli initiative is a collaboration between the defense ministry, state-owned Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and medical device maker Inovytec.

...Some 30 ventilators have been delivered to Israel's health ministry, the statement said. It did not indicate how many machines it planned to produce daily or whether they were being made available for export as well as local use.

Olde Tyme Religion
Pope Francis Warns of ‘Viral Genocide’ from Coronavirus
[BREITBART] Pope Francis
...Argentine liberation theologist, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio. He was elected pope in 2013. Rather than setting up shop in Avignon, where he belongs, the first Jesuit Pope chose to reside in the Domus Sanctae Marthae guesthouse instead of the papal apartments. He is big on climate change, against consumerism, and in favor of throwing a blanket over homosexual activity within the clergy. He's not real sure about the Resurrection, about Christ's divinity, and a few other things that would have gotten him burned at the stake a few hundred years ago, but he's hot for a certain South American Earth Mother Goddess...
has warned of a possible "viral genocide" if governments prioritize the economy over the people, insisting that the state’s first task is to "defend the population."
Preventing starvation is defending the population.
"I am edified by the reaction of so many people ‐ doctors, nurses, nurses, volunteers, religious, priests ‐ who risk their lives to care for and defend healthy people from contagion," the pope said in a handwritten letter sent Saturday to Buenos Aires judge Roberto Andrés Gallardo and made public in part by the state-run Télam news agency.

In his letter, Francis highlighted that "some governments have taken exemplary measures with well-marked priorities to defend the population."

"Governments that face the crisis in this way show the priority of their decisions: people first. And this is important because we all know that defending the people is an economic disaster," the pope wrote.

Israel tests coronavirus vaccine prototype on rodents at defense lab
[YNet] - Israel has begun testing a COVID-19 vaccine prototype on rodents at its bio-chemical defense laboratory, a source said on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the Israel Institute for Biological Research (IIBR), in rural Ness Ziona, to join the fight against the coronavirus pandemic on Feb. 1, prompting an easing of its secrecy as it cooperates with civilian scientists and private firms.

A source familiar with IIBR activities said that trials were already under way on rodents but declined to identify the kind of rodent.

Hospitals turn to snorkel masks to ease respirator overload
BRUSSELS: As hospitals face an overload of COVID-19 patients struggling to breathe, innovative medical staff are turning to snorkelling masks from sports stores to stop their lungs collapsing.

The idea started in Italy, the European country worst-hit by the coronavirus pandemic, with hospitals in other nations taking note and adding their own specific medical parts to make it work.

One such is the Erasme Hospital on the outskirts of Belgium's capital Brussels. It is attached to the city's ULB university - and through it to a private spin-off, Endo Tools Therapeutics, whose knowhow in 3D printing for medical use has proved invaluable.

"They are to be used for patients with severe respiratory problems. The aim is to avoid having to intubate the trachea of the patient and put them on a respirator," said Frederic Bonnier, a respiratory physiotherapist at the hospital who also teaches at the university.

He spearheaded the design of a custom-made valve that fits to the top of full-face masks, where the snorkel is meant to go, allowing them to connect to standard BiPAP machines that feed pressurised air into masks.

This helps prevent the collapse of alveoli, lung air sacs needed for the intake of oxygen into our bodies and the exhalation of carbon dioxide. Pneumonia brought on by COVID-19 inflames the lung membrane and fills those sacs with liquid.

Woman Who Ingested Fish Tank Cleaner Is Prolific Donor to Democratic Causes
[FreeBeacon] The Arizona woman who said that she and her 68-year-old husband ingested a substance used to clean fish tanks after hearing President Donald Trump tout chloroquine as a cure for the coronavirus has given thousands of dollars to Democratic groups and candidates over the last two years.

The woman's most recent donations, in late February, were to a Democratic PAC, the 314 Action Fund, that bills itself as the "pro-science resistance" and has vocally criticized the Trump administration's response to the coronavirus pandemic and held up her case to slam the White House.

Although local and national media outlets withheld the couple's names, the Washington Free Beacon established their identities through descriptions in local news reports, where the pair were identified by their first names and ages: Gary, 68, and Wanda, 61. The Free Beacon is withholding their identities at Wanda's request.

Federal Election Commission records show that Wanda has donated thousands of dollars to Democratic electoral groups and candidates over the past two years, including Hillary Clinton, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and EMILY's List, a group that aims to elect pro-choice female candidates.

Wanda told the Free Beacon that she and her husband were both Democrats, not Trump supporters. They heard about the potential benefits of chloroquine, an antimalarial drug, in news reports. She decided at the "spur of the moment" to try taking it, but reached for a fish tank cleaner in her pantry that contains chloroquine phosphate, a different and deadly form of the chemical. The Food and Drug Administration issued an emergency authorization for the use of chloroquine to treat coronavirus on Sunday.
