LAPD Stops Potential Mass Casualty Shooting in Hollywood, Man in High-Rise Had Rifles Pointed Down at Park
[RedState] The Los Angeles Police Department stopped a potential Las Vegas-style mass shooting Wednesday night in Hollywood as they arrested a man with a cache of weapons in his 18th floor apartment. Some of the guns were pointed down at a popular park, and the 25-year-old suspect was reportedly acting strange and making threats. (Note: some outlets are reporting that he’s 24.)

The possible attack was thwarted by security guards and neighbors at the high-rise who reported to the LAPD that a resident was possibly suffering from a mental health crisis. The man, now identified as Braxton Kyle Johnson, who one neighbor said had talked about his military background and believed the CIA was after him,
...sounds like paranoid schizophrenia blossoming — he’s at the right age for it...
was placed under arrest after police entered the apartment with a search warrant and found a sniper rifle, two high-powered rifles, a shotgun, three pistols, extensive body armor and thousands of rounds of ammo.

The LA Times reports that “one rifle with a scope was mounted on a small tripod, similar to the ones used by hunters — or military snipers.”

All the guns were unregistered.

Johnson had recently moved into the Lumina Hollywood, a luxury apartment complex in the 1500 block of Gordon Street near Sunset Boulevard, from out of town.

Johnson’s bail has been set at $500,000. It’s not his first brush with the law—early reports indicate that he has an unspecified criminal history in at least one other state.
Quite a few convicted prisoners have mental illness — it leads to poor impulse control.

Poss. mentally ill suspect arrested, charged with firebombing synagogue in New Jersey
[IsraelTimes] Nicholas Malindretos, suspected of hurling Molotov cocktail at Temple Ner Tamid on Sunday, faces up to 20 years in prison

Authorities in New Jersey on Wednesday said they had arrested a suspect for Molotov cocktailing a synagogue over the weekend. The attack on Temple Ner Tamid in the town of Bloomfield early Sunday morning caused no injuries or damage.

The federal US attorney’s office in New Jersey said Nicholas Malindretos, 26, was arrested in connection with the crime.

Malindretos, from the nearby town of Clifton in Passaic County, was charged with one count of attempted use of fire to damage and destroy a building used in interstate commerce. The charge carries a minimum sentence of five years in prison, a maximum sentence of 20 years and a fine of $250,000.

Malindretos will appear in federal court in Newark on Thursday.

"No one should find that their lives are at risk by exercising their faith," US Attorney Philip R. Sellinger said. "We will continue to devote whatever resources are necessary to keep our Jewish community and all New Jersey residents safe."

Ner Tamid’s security cameras recorded the suspect approaching the synagogue at 3:19 a.m. on Sunday. The man lit a Molotov cocktail, threw it at the building’s door, where it broke on impact, and fled down the driveway. The synagogue’s doors had been reinforced as a security measure.

The arrest complaint said a license plate reading device recorded a vehicle in the area shortly before and after the attack. Law enforcement located the vehicle in Clifton on Tuesday and saw items that appeared to be related to the attack inside, including clothing and bottles of liquid.

Officers obtained a search warrant for the vehicle and carried out a search on Wednesday. Inside they found a sweatshirt and white gloves that matched those worn by the suspect in the surveillance video.

Video cameras in the area of the incident also recorded the vehicle and a suspect that appeared to be Malindretos around the time of the attack.

Federal, state and local agencies were involved in the search, including the FBI
...Formerly one of the world's premier criminal investigation organizations, something for a nation to be proud of. Now it's a political arm of the Deep State oligarchy that is willing to trump up charges, suppress evidence, or take out insurance policies come election time...
and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The Essex County sheriff’s office had also offered a $10,000 reward for information on the case.

Bloomfield is in Essex County, around 30 minutes by car west of Manhattan.

Map with potential targets found at NJ firebombing suspect's home, prosecutors say

[WABC] A federal judge in Newark on Thursday ordered alleged synagogue Molotov cocktailer Nicholas Malindretos held without bail following a brief hearing.

Federal agents found gasoline, wicks and lighters in his home, as well as notes with a circle drawn in a 10-mile radius on a map, with "a ten-mile radius of targets" with police and military as potential targets, prosecutors said.

They referred to unspecified mental health issues, but U.S. Attorney Philip Sellinger declined to elaborate.
Nuts rather than jihadi, white supremacist, or African-American. Got it.
"This defendant has been charged with a very serious offense: throwing a Molotov cocktail at a facility, the temple, which has maximum of 20 years in prison," Sellinger said.

He declined to say whether bias charges could be added but noted, "This investigation has just begun."

Prosecutors said Malindretos, who is 26, has no prior felony arrests, has no home and has been living in a friend's basement apartment.

Tom Jones hit ‘Delilah' banned from Wales rugby matches due to ‘problematic' nature of song
[CNN] Choirs have been banned from performing Tom Jones’ hit "Delilah" during Wales’ international rugby matches at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff due to the song’s "problematic" nature, the UK’s PA Media reported.

The lyrics of the 1960s hit, which was taken off the half-time entertainment list at the Principality Stadium in 2015, allude to a woman being stabbed by her jealous partner.

The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) and Principality Stadium only announced this week that the song has been removed from the venue’s playlist.

"Delilah will not feature on the playlist for choirs for rugby internationals at Principality Stadium," a Principality Stadium spokesperson said, according to PA Media.

"Guest choirs have also more recently been requested not to feature the song during their pre-match performances and throughout games," the spokesperson added.

"The WRU condemns domestic violence of any kind.

"We have previously sought advice from subject matter experts on the issue of censoring the song, and we are respectfully aware that it is problematic and upsetting to some supporters because of its subject matter."

CNN has contacted the WRU, the Principality Stadium, and a representative for Jones for comment.

In 2014, Jones, who did not write the song but recorded its most popular interpretation, told The Independent that he "love[s]" to hear "Delilah" sung at rugby games and that it makes him "very proud to be Welsh."

Welsh supporters have a long history of singing at sports events, including rugby games.

"I think if they’re looking into the lyric about a man killing a woman, it’s not a political statement," Jones said, according to The Independent. "It’s just something that happens in life that it’s [a] woman [who] was unfaithful to him and he just loses it."

The 82-year-old Jones is one of Wales’ best-loved performing artists and rose to fame in the 60s with hits that include "It’s Not Unusual" and "Green Green Grass of Home."

Last month, a BBC investigation made allegations of sexism and discrimination at the WRU, with Charlotte Wathan, the former general manager of Welsh women’s rugby, claiming there was a "toxic culture" of sexism at the organization.

Following the allegations, Steve Phillips stepped down from his role as WRU chief executive and was replaced by Nigel Walker on an acting basis.

On Friday, WRU chair Ieuan Evans announced the formation of a new external taskforce to investigate the federation’s culture and behaviors.

Wales winger Louis Rees-Zammit appeared to criticize the decision to ban "Delilah" from the Principality Stadium in light of the sexism allegations, writing on Twitter on Thursday: "All the things they need to do and they do that first...."

Wales begins its Six Nations campaign, the Northern Hemisphere’s premier international rugby competition, against Ireland on Saturday.
I can’t wait to hear the full throated roar of this being belted out Saturday.

Glen Oaks Alzheimer's Special Care Center releases resident to funeral home prematurely
[MAIL] An Iowa hospice has been fined $10,000 after a funeral home discovered a woman sent to it in a body bag was still alive and 'gasping for air'.

Officials say the 66-year-old woman was declared dead at the Glen Oaks Alzheimer's Special Care Centre in Urbandale on January 3.

The woman, whose name has not been released, had early onset dementia, anxiety and depression and had been in hospice care since December 28.

She was placed in a zipped body bag and taken to the Ankeny Funeral Home and Crematory, the Iowa Department of Inspection and Appeals said in a report filed on Wednesday.

#1  From a MSNBC relayed article from the Des Moines Register
A report from the Iowa Department of Inspection and Appeals says the mistaken death declaration occurred on Jan. 3 after a staff member at the Glen Oaks Alzheimer's Special Care Center in Urbandale reported that the woman, 66, had died about 6 a.m. The report said the woman, who had early onset dementia, anxiety and depression, had been in hospice care since Dec. 28.

The staff member reported she could no longer feel the woman's pulse and alerted a nurse practitioner, who made the death declaration, the report said. Iowa law allows nurses and physicians' assistants, in addition to doctors, to declare a patient dead.

The report also said that the woman previously had suffered minor seizures and showed signs of mottled skin, a sign of approaching death.

On 5 Jan 2023 she ultimately died. The article doesn't give details on how that was determined. I have had a couple of patients near death whose physical exam matched that as described above, however all continued to have a sinus rhythm detectable by an EKG for many hours before that too ceased. Definitely a bad idea to not check for EKG activity in such patients before declaring them dead.

One of my ship’s had a notorious episode where a sailor gave birth to a baby on board during deployment- luckily in port. We got blasted by Rush Limbaugh in the early 90’s. Happily, Twitter did not exist. I talked to the doctor who was getting blasted worldwide. The patient was extremely thin and reported missing one period. The protocol did not require an exam. She gave birth two days later. I had traded duty so I missed the fun.

Why would China use a spy balloon when it has satellites?
[BBC] News of an alleged Chinese spy balloon floating over the US has left many wondering why Beijing would want to use a relatively unsophisticated tool for its surveillance of the US mainland.

China has said the balloon, spotted over the state of Montana, is merely a "civilian airship" which deviated from its planned route, but the US suspects it is a "high-altitude surveillance" device.

Whatever the capabilities of this particular balloon, the US has taken the threat seriously enough to postpone Secretary of State Antony Blinken's visit to China, which was due to take place on 5 and 6 February.

Balloons are one of the oldest forms of surveillance technology. The Japanese military used them to launch incendiary bombs in the US during World War Two. They were also widely used by the US and the Soviet Union during the Cold War.

More recently, the US has reportedly been considering adding high-altitude inflatables into the Pentagon's surveillance network. Modern balloons typically hover between 24km-37km above the earth's surface (80,000ft-120,000ft).

"Beijing is probably trying to signal to Washington: 'While we want to improve ties, we are also ever ready for sustained competition, using any means necessary,' without severely inflaming tensions," independent air-power analyst He Yuan Ming told the BBC.

"And what better tool for this than a seemingly innocuous balloon?"

The balloon's anticipated flight path near certain missile bases suggests it is unlikely it has drifted off course, He Yuan Ming said.

Google Takes Over Aging Moffett Field and Its Airship Hangars

09 Hangars 3, 2, 1Source: San Jose Mercury News – mercurynews.com

Built for an age when 800-foot-long flying aircraft carriers were the cutting edge of aviation, the colossal hangars of the Moffett Federal Airfield are about to become roosts for Silicon Valley’s latest ideas.

Google on Wednesday formally takes over the 1,000-acre site with plans to repurpose its three airship hangars as laboratories for developing robots, rovers, drones, Internet-carrying balloons and other cutting-edge technology. The company will also manage the airfield’s two runways and upgrade an old military golf course for public use.

The restoration could not come soon enough for admirers of the landmark structures.

Unattractive people are MORE likely to keep wearing face masks in post-Covid era
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] Attractive people are less likely to keep wearing face masks in the post-Covid era, a study suggests.
"Golly, yer cute!"
"Ain't I though?"
"Modest too."

Researchers conducted three questionnaires asking people about self-perceived attractiveness and mask-wearing intentions in various scenarios.
"Gah! Put yer mask back on!"
"I ain't that bad lookin'!"
"Yer face stopped my digital watch!"

They concluded that young and middle-aged Americans who view themselves as attractive 'believe wearing a mask hinders the opportunities to deliver a favorable impression to others.'
"Stick 'em up!"
"Oh, c'mon. You ain't that ugly, are you?"

#3  From local EMS decades ago I heard a story of a man who pulled off the nearby interstate because he had chest pains & was concerned of a possible heart attack. This was before cell phones. He flagged down another driver for assistance. Picture two cars parked in the dark on the shoulder, close to each other. The two men were talking and standing in front of the two cars (this is always a horrible idea on any interstate -- if you have to gather together in these situations, get your body well away from the road).
As so often happens, another driver "followed" the car at the rear at full speed, ramming into it and pushed the column of cars ahead so that the man with chest pain was run over and killed on the spot. The would be helper was not injured in the slightest. No one else was involved.

How US Marines are being reshaped for China threat
[BBC] The US military commitment to the Pacific was underlined in a White House meeting between the leaders of the US and Japan. But behind the scenes, this renewed focus on Asia has sparked a fierce debate within one of its most fabled military forces, writes defence analyst Jonathan Marcus.

A bitter family row has erupted in one of the US military's most hallowed institutions, the US Marine Corps.

A host of its former senior commanders are lining up to attack the current leadership over plans for its reinvention.

There seems to be a 'Philosophy of War' argument bubbling to the surface encapsulated in 'cutting unnecessary rifles'. On the other hand the Air Force and Navy follow the "Network Centric" paradigm where 'everything is a weapon system and humans are just one sensor' or "We blow up things -- that's what we do good!"

Jamaica Becomes First Country to Volunteer for Military Operation in Haiti
[Breitbart]Thugs vs. Thugs
Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness said on Tuesday that his country is willing to join a U.N.-proposed multinational military force to intervene in Haiti and fight the criminal gangs that control most of its territory. Jamaica is the first nation to publicly commit troops to the effort.

“Jamaica will be willing to participate in a multinational security assistance deployment to Haiti under the appropriate jurisdictional parameters to support a return to a reasonable level of stability and peace, which would be necessary for any inclusive democratic process to take root,” Holness said in an address to the Jamaican House of Representatives on Tuesday.

Among Haiti’s many problems is its inability to hold elections. The last of its elected officials completed their terms and retired in early January. Prime Minister Ariel Henry was not elected – he became “acting” head of state following the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021. Many Haitians regard Henry as an illegitimate leader and will likely be hostile to international forces they perceive as propping him up in office.

The United Nations has called for military intervention into the horrific Haitian situation several times, most recently and forcefully last week, when Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that only such a force could stop “the worst human rights and humanitarian emergency in decades.”

Guterres warned the Haitian government cannot stabilize the situation on its own, as its security forces are outnumbered, under-equipped, and riddled with corruption.

Guterres demanded international intervention on the same day a U.N. report said murders in Haiti rose by 35 percent and kidnappings surged by 100 percent in 2022. Gangster control of ports and infrastructure has made it almost impossible for humanitarian aid to address Haiti’s plagues of poverty, starvation, and cholera.

Haitian police rioted in Port-au-Prince last Thursday, blocking roads and inflicting considerable damage on the airport and prime minister’s residence as they unsuccessfully attempted to confront Henry. The police were enraged by the brutal gangland slayings of 14 officers over the past month and blamed Henry for not doing enough to support them.

Leon Charles, former chief of the Haitian National Police, told an Organization of American States (OAS) meeting on Wednesday that the world does not understand just how bad the situation in Haiti has become, or else it would be more eager to intervene.

“It is our impression that the international community has not yet taken stock of the urgency of the situation that the Haitian people are facing. My country is experiencing one of the most difficult moments in its history,” he said.

Charles said it was futile to send vitally needed humanitarian aid to Haiti as long as the gangs are in charge, comparing it to fighting an out-of-control fire with buckets of water. He described the U.N. report on gang violence as “truly chilling” and said “the situation in Haiti is extremely urgent.”

Reuters noted on Wednesday that U.N. efforts to establish a “rapid action force” for Haiti have stalled because no regional power, including the United States, is eager to put boots on the blood-soaked ground, especially when there is no guarantee of support from either Henry’s tottering government or the Haitian people at large.

Last week’s police riot did nothing to improve the prospects for international intervention.

Despite Prime Minister Holness’ remarks to his parliament, the U.N. has not yet received a formal commitment of support with a specified number of troops from Jamaica. The only other country to discuss sending personnel to Haiti as of Thursday is El Salvador, whose Vice President Felix Ulloa floated the possibility of sending in a “technical team” on a “study mission” to share El Salvador’s expertise at fighting organized crime.

Ulloa explicitly ruled out deploying its own security forces to Haiti, however.

“We are using all of our armed forces and the national police in our internal war against the gangs. So we have no extra elements to send out, therefore there isn’t any possibility of El Salvador sending troops or police groups to Haiti,” he said on Monday.

U.N. Security Council chair Vanessa Frazier of Malta welcomed Holness’ declaration of support on Thursday and said a multinational force is “required on the ground in order to stabilize the situation in Haiti and protect the interests of the population” – but the Security Council has scheduled no meetings to discuss the Haitian crisis or organize such a force.

“The Biden administration had hoped that Canada would take the lead. However, after several assessment trips and discussions, Ottawa has not said if it is willing, but recent comments by its ambassador to the U.N. have indicated hesitancy,” the Miami Herald reported Tuesday.

Ron DeSantis Budget Includes $2 Billion in Tax Relief: Permanent Sales Tax Exemptions for Baby Necessities, Gas Stoves
[Breitbart] Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis administration’s “Framework for Freedom Budget” includes $2 billion in tax relief, including both permanent and temporary sales tax holidays on a variety of items.

Speaking on the proposal Wednesday, Gov. Ron DeSantis said the Sunshine State has “some of the lowest per capita state tax burden and debt per capita of any state.” He also proudly announced that the $114.8 billion budget proposal includes billions in tax relief.

“And whereas we proposed $335 million in tax relief four years ago, today we’re able to do $2 billion in tax relief, including the half a billion dollars we’ve already gotten signed into law with our toll relief program,” he said, adding that it serves as proof the state is “going in the right direction.”

The budget is extensive and, indeed, includes several tax exemptions, including four permanent sales tax exemptions on a series of categories. Those categories include baby and toddler “necessities,” strollers and crimes, OTC pet medication, and gas stoves — the latter serving as a dig at the Biden administration after Consumer Product Safety Commissioner Richard Trumka Jr. initially suggested a ban on gas stoves as a “real possibility,” only to backtrack due to the backlash.

“No tax permanently on gas stoves. They want your gas stove and we’re not gonna let that happen,” DeSantis said, explaining it is “just the principle” of the matter.

“We’re also doing permanent sales tax exclusions on all baby necessities, including cribs and strollers. It’s hard enough raising kids as it is now. You get baby food, diapers, wipes … baby clothes, the whole shebang, including things like cribs and strollers which are very, very expensive. So that is gonna be permanently tax free in the state of Florida,” he said during the press conference, highlighting the permanent exclusion on all OTC pet medications as well, “because they ‘re parts of our families too.”
Want babies? Can you work remote? Move to Florida NOW!
— just imagine future billboard campaigns in New York and California.
Additionally, the Freedom First budget includes temporary tax holidays on certain items, as the state has done in the past. That includes certain household items, power tools, and more.

“We’re also doing one year sales tax holidays for household items under $25. And so that will be everything from detergent to trash bags,” DeSantis explained.

“These are necessities and people are gonna be able to get those tax free: All dental hygiene products, tax free. All toiletries, tax free. Children’s books, tax free. Children toys, tax free. All kids athletic equipment, tax free,” he said.

“And I think something really, really great, no tax on pet food in the state of Florida,” he said, predicting these tax cuts will be “really good” for Florida families:

Furthermore, the findings could make Europe less dependent on China for the critical metals.

EU assembly lifts immunity of 2 lawmakers linked to scandal
[An Nahar] The European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
's parliament on Thursday removed the protective immunity of two politicians linked to one of the bloc's biggest-ever corruption scandals, paving the way for them to be questioned by Belgian Sherlocks.

In a show of hands, the assembly voted overwhelmingly to lift the parliamentary immunity of Belgian politician Marc Tarabella and Italian Andrea Cozzolino. Both men previously said, through their lawyers, that they are willing to cooperate with the Belgian authorities.

Live television images showed that Tarabella voted in favor of having his own immunity lifted.

The two have denied any links to the scandal, in which Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates. Home of nutbag holy manYusuf al-Qaradawi...
i and Moroccan officials are suspected of offering bribes to influence decisions at the European Parliament. Qatar and Morocco have also vehemently denied involvement, but the assembly has suspended work on all Qatar-related files.

According to the report prepared to allow Taraballa's immunity to be lifted, a Belgian investigation shows that he "may have been involved in acts of corruption connected with interference by one or more foreign states aimed at influencing the debates and decisions taken in the European Parliament."

It said that "testimony against him suggests that such payments were made to him on several occasions, amounting to a total of between" 120,000 and 140,000 euros ($132,00 and $154,000).

The Cozzolino report said that the Italian EU politician "is suspected of having, from 2019 onwards, participated in an agreement with other persons to cooperate in protecting the interests of foreign states in the European Parliament."

This was apparently done, at least in part, "by impeding the adoption of parliamentary resolutions that might damage the interests of those states, in exchange for sums of money," the report said.

Interior Department Blocks Minnesota Twin Metals Mining Project In Big Win For Beijing
[Federalist] The Biden administration blocked plans for a major nickel and cobalt mine in northern Minnesota Thursday while the U.S. remains reliant on overseas supply chains for its critical minerals.

The "Twin Metals Project" would have tapped the Duluth Complex within the Superior National Forest, where 95 percent of the nation’s nickel reserves and 88 percent of American cobalt reserves remain underground.

Now, pending litigation over leases, the Department of the Interior has blocked the nearly $3 billion mine over concerns about the safety of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness inside the national forest.

"The Department of the Interior takes seriously our obligations to steward public lands and waters on behalf of all Americans," Interior Secretary Deb Haaland said in a press release. "Protecting a place like Boundary Waters is key to supporting the health of the watershed and its surrounding wildlife, upholding our Tribal trust and treaty responsibilities, and boosting the local recreation economy."

The department withdrew more than 225,000 acres of the Superior National Forest from consideration for mining operations, ensuring the Twin Metals project’s demise for the foreseeable future.

The agency’s decision to block the project, however, is a major step back for American mineral independence while the government’s mining regime remains so broken that the administration is shopping in Canada for natural resources.

This One-Person eVTOL Lets You Do Barrel Rolls Like a Fighter Jet‐and You Don't Even Need a License
[Robb Report] It seems to be the year of the personal flying machine minus the pilot’s license. Three firms have announced one-person eVTOL aircraft that will be sold to the public this year. The Ryse Recon, Jetson One and RotorX Dragon will be certified under the FAA’s Ultralight category, which does not require a pilot’s license, though each company is mandating training.

A fourth personal eVTOL from France, the AirRacer, will be coming to the US to show off its easy-flight abilities. The brainchild of Franky Zapata, a former Jet-Ski racer who has since invented wild flying contraptions like the Flyboard Air, the AirRacer is a very different animal.
