Daesh In Afghanistan Aims To Attack US: McKenzie
[ToloNews] The ISIS group in Afghanistan is a "very worrisome" threat to the United States, and US counterterrorism efforts have yet to shrink its hard boy ambitions, Head of US Central Command Marine Gen. Frank McKenzie said Wednesday, according to Military Times report.

"ISIS (ISIS) in Afghanistan certainly has aspirations to attack the United States," McKenzie said. "It is our clear judgment that as long as we maintain pressure on them it will be hard for them to do that."

McKenzie, with responsibility for managing American military operations across the greater Middle East, spoke in Germany with news hounds returning home with him from an eight-day trip that took him to Qatar

Earlier this week, the News Agency that Dare Not be Named cited US. and Afghan security officials In reporting that the ISIS group in Afghanistan is expanding its footprint, recruiting new fighters and plotting attacks on the United States and other Western countries.

McKenzie, a veteran of combat in Afghanistan and Iraq, said he believes ISIS in Afghanistan has not expanded its capabilities but remains a big problem.

"They are very worrisome to us" in their strongholds in eastern Afghanistan, he said, adding that combat operations have failed to reduce the group’s fighting ranks. Others have said they are thought to number in the thousands.

The ISIS affiliate appeared in Afghanistan shortly after the group’s core fighters swept across Syria and Iraq in the summer of 2014, carving out a self-styled Islamic empire in both countries.

The Afghanistan affiliate refers to itself as the Khorasan Province, a name applied to parts of Afghanistan, Iran

The Iranian authorities said that Tuesday that the two nations will cooperate on application of atomic energy in healthcare and agriculture.

Confusion over Mexico's National Guard deployment to south border
[Al Jazeera] The Mexican government said the deployment of National Guard members to the southern border region began this week, but there have been no visible signs of its presence on the ground. Government officials have also made contradictory claims about the status of the force in southern Mexico.

The announced deployment has created confusion in Tapachula near the Mexico-Guatemala border, where migrants colonists and asylum seekers say increased militarisation will not stop migration.

Earlier this month, the government announced plans to send 6,000 National Guard troops to southern states to stem the migration of Central Americans and others heading north overland. The news came amid immigration deal negotiations with the United States following threats by US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
of escalating tariffs on Mexican goods.

Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs Marcelo Ebrard has made several public statements announcing National Guard deployment this week, with support from the Army and Marines. Deployment began Wednesday and will be quickly increasing every day, Ebrard said during a presser on Wednesday, without elaborating on the specifics.

An official from the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs told Al Jazeera on Thursday that the National Guard had not yet been deployed to southern Mexico. It would be part of an escalating rolling deployment that started with members of other security forces and decisions on which forces will be deployed when will depend on strategy and other factors, the official said.

Terror Plots In United States Since 9/11
[DailySignal] When authorities arrested Ashiqual Alam last week for planning a terrorist attack against Times Square in New York City, it was the 111th Islamist terror plot or attack against the U.S. homeland since 9/11, and the 98th to be a homegrown plot.

New York City is the most common city to be targeted by terrorists in the U.S., and this is at least the fifth plot or attack against the Times Square area specifically. Many will remember the botched car bomb attack against Times Square by Faisal Shahzad in 2010.

More generally, public gathering spaces such as Times Square are the most common type of target by Islamist terrorists, especially following the spread of ISIS propaganda calling for such strikes.

Once again, though, the hard work of the FBI and Joint Terrorism Task Force prevented an attack. Over the course of an almost-yearlong investigation involving multiple undercover agents, the task force kept the people of New York safe.

The U.S. must maintain this proactive approach of stopping terrorism before it strikes.
At the link, considerably more interesting than the text above, is a scrollable timeline. An interesting aide-memoire, it seems to me, described as follows:

This page is The Heritage Foundation’s compilation of all Islamist terror plots and attacks against the U.S. homeland since 9/11 according to publicly available records. The list does not include activities that are merely linked to terrorism, such as traveling abroad to join a terrorist organization, but each plot requires some threat directed at the U.S. homeland. Additionally, the primary motivation of the terror plot or attack must be a radical Islamist ideology, which supports the use of violence as a means to achieve the long-run objective of imposing Islamic law, i.e., sharia. As this timeline makes clear, the threat of Islamist terror remains real and the U.S. must remain dedicated to defeating terrorism at home and abroad.

#1  The interesting thing about the timeline is how the number of plots picked up once Obama became president.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
'Difficult to be optimistic about Iran,' sez Saudi former intelligence chief
[France24] The former head of Saudi intelligence, Prince Turki al-Faisal, told FRANCE 24 in The Hague that he was pessimistic about the prospects for a successful negotiation between the US and Iran, calling Iran "a disruptive force" in the region. He also accused Tehran of being behind this week's attack by Houthi rebels on a Saudi airport and said he saw no chance for a peaceful solution in Yemen in the near future.

"I'm always hopeful that sensibility can be achieved in the minds of [the] Iranian leadership. However, from their past practice and how they have continued to be a disruptive force in the area, it's difficult to be optimistic about their actions," Saudi Arabia's former intelligence chief, Prince Turki al-Faisal, told FRANCE 24's Marc Perelman.

Turning to the Middle East peace process, Prince Turki said he was waiting for US President Donald Trump to unveil his much-touted "deal of the century" between Israel and the Palestinians. He also denied that the Saudis had abandoned their support for core Palestinian demands in exchange for a rapprochement with Israel.

On the issue of relations with Qatar, Prince Turki lamented that he had seen "no change" in the Qatari position, two years after a Saudi-led coalition imposed an embargo on the country.

Finally, he insisted that the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi was carried out by "rogue elements" and forcefully denied claims that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ordered the killing.

Khamenei Slaps America In The Face By Refusing to receive Trump message from Abe
[Debka] Iran’s leader administered a brazen insult to the United States when he told visiting Japanese PM Shinzo Abe on Thursday, June 13, that he did not consider President Donald Trump “worthy” of an exchange of messages with him. “I do not have and will not have any response for him,” he told the Japanese prime minister, crudely knocking down his visitor’s effort to ease the spiraling US-Iranian tensions. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei went on to say that Trump’s promise not to seek regime change in Iran was “a lie” and he did not believe Washington’s offer of “honest negotiations” with Tehran.

Not content with that insult, Iran’s Foreign Minister Javad Zarif suggested that an American provocation was behind the “reported attacks on Japan-related” oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman. That they took place while Japanese PM Shinzo Abe was meeting supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was “beyond suspicious,” he tweeted.

Israel won’t allow enemies to setup ‘attack’ bases near border after Syria strike: Netanyahu
[ALMASDARNEWS] In a rare apparent acknowledgment of Israel’s military operations in Syria, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israeli Defense Forces were working systematically to prevent Tel Aviv’s enemies from gaining a foothold near borders

"We respond with attacks and force to every attack against us. But we are not only taking action after the fact, but we are also denying the enemy capabilities before the fact. In a systematic and consistent way, we are working to prevent our enemy from establishing attack bases against us and in our vicinity," Netanyahu said, speaking at an event on Wednesday, according to The Times of Israel.

On Wednesday morning, Syrian air defenses reported downing ’several’ Israeli missiles during a suspected IDF strike in Daraa province. Later in the day, the Syrian Arab News Agency said that the Israeli military had also conducted "electronic warfare" against Syrian defenses to try to suppress its air defense radar installations.

Information about any possible casualties has yet to be reported.

Prior to Wednesday’s strikes, the last reported IDF attack against Syria took place on June 2, with jets striking multiple targets throughout the country which Tel Aviv said was a response to rocket fire into Israel.

Tel Aviv has admitted to carrying out "hundreds" of air attacks against Syria in recent years, and said that the strikes are aimed at countering an alleged Iranian and Iranian-linked presence in the war-torn country.

Damascus has condemned the attacks as a blatant violation of international law and accused Israel of assisting the jihadist rebels in their efforts to destroy Syria. Iran
