Taliban Defense Minister Visits Panjshir; We Do Not Allow “disruptors” to Disrupt Security
Life is getting a tad more exciting in the Panjshir Valley. It will be interesting to see if the current generation can repeat the deeds of the previous generation — including those of the previous generation who returned from retirement to fight the second generation of Talib tyrants. Good luck, guys!
[KhaamaPress] The Taliban
...Arabic for students...
Ministry of Defense said that Mullah Yaqub, the Acting Minister of Defense, has visited Panjshir province to assess the security situation.

Mullah Yaqub met security officials and tribal elders in the province, today May 21st, according to Inayatullah Khawarazmi, the front man for the Taliban Ministry of Defense.

Khawarazmi added that the Acting Minister of the Taliban’s Defense Ministry had told the residents of Panjshir province that they should not be galvanized by enemy propaganda and should continue living their "normal" lives.

The residents of the province were also advised to cooperate with the Taliban to restore "order" in the province. The Acting Minister of Defense also emphasized that the Taliban in the province will not allow anyone, particularly "disruptors" to disrupt security.

In recent days, battle between Afghan National Resistance® Front forces led by Ahmad Massoud and Taliban forces in Panjshir province has escalated.

Amrullah Saleh and Ahmad Massoud founded the Resistance® Front after the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan in Panjshir. Saleh and Massoud, as well as the Front’s leadership council, are based outside of Afghanistan.

In the most recent case, battle started two days ago in the Khanj district of Panjshir province between Taliban and Resistance® Front fighters, and it is said to be still unfolding.

The Taliban Air Force Commander, who visited Panjshir earlier this week, told the people of the province "not to kill themselves for the sake of those in Tajikistan and La Belle France."

"Do not kill yourself for the benefit of those who live in Tajikistan and La Belle France and raise money from your blood there," said Amanuddin Mansoor, commander of the Taliban Ministry of Defense Air Force, in a message to the people of Panjshir released on May 14, through the ministry.

The Taliban official called on the people of Panjshir to stop resisting and join the Taliban. According to him, if the people of Panjshir unite with the Taliban, their "lives, property, honor and reputation" will be protected and no one will "invade" Panjshir.

Hassan Sheikh Mohamud sworn in as President of Somalia
[HODHODYEMENNEWS] Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has been sworn in after winning Somalia’s presidential election, becoming the 10th president in the country’s history.

He was chosen as Somalia’s new president on Sunday, returning to the helm for a second stint five years after he was voted out.

Mohamud defeated the incumbent President Mohammed Abdullahi Mohammed in a runoff after three rounds of voting in an election that has been delayed for over a year.

The newly-elected president saw him win from his rival by securing 214 votes in the runoff, while Mohammed could only muster 110 ballots in his favor.

The members of parliament and senators who chose Mohamud were elected by delegates chosen by clan leaders. It had originally been conceived that the president would be elected by the people of Somalia under universal suffrage, but this plan was eventually abandoned by the country’s political elite.

Somalia returns UAE's $9.6 million seized funds
[Garowe] In what could significantly improve the strained relationship between Abu Dhabi and Mogadishu, the federal government of Somalia has returned funds confiscated by the outgoing regime of Mohammed Abdullahi Farmajo, who lost the presidential election last week.

Farmajo, who has been at the helm for the last five years, lost to his predecessor Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who is set to formally assume office this coming Sunday. Hassan Sheikh was the eighth president of the Horn of Africa nation and served from 2012-17.

On Thursday, the office of Prime Minister Mohammed Hussein Roble announced that the country had released $9.6 million to the United Arab Emirates [UAE], which was being held by the Central Bank of Somalia following instructions from babus bureaucrats in Farmajo's administration.

The announcement came hours before PM Roble left for the United Arab Emirates to attend the funeral ceremony of the country's former ruler Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan who passed on last week. The ruler has since been succeeded by Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

At the Emiratis, the Office of the Prime Minister Mohammed Hussein Roble noted, that he will deliver a greeting from Hassan Sheikh to the new UAE president. Roble is credited for holding successful elections in the country despite hiccups mainly triggered by the outgoing regime.

The PM had ordered the release of the cash in January this year but was halted by Farmajo amid a power struggle between the two leaders. Farmajo had resisted the release of the funds, with the Central Bank implementing his decision.

In January, Roble also apologized to the UAE for the seizure of the money which Abu Dhabi said was meant to pay the salaries of units of SNA it trained in Somalia. But in return, the government of Somalia claimed the money was meant to sponsor the opposition.

Throughout the period of Farmajo, the government of Somalia has not been on good terms with the Emiratis, who have been cooperating with the opposition, which managed to seize power a week ago. Farmajo preferred Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. to the United Arab Emirates.

UAE had offered to assist in paying the salary of the Somali National Army which is undergoing rebuilding. The country has struggled to have a formidable army since the ouster of former ruler Said Barre, who was toppled over three decades ago.

However,
it's easy to be generous with someone else's money...
moments after the release of the funds, the United Arab Emirates announced that the money should directly go for drought response in Somalia, a country which it insisted that is a sisterly nation, given the close cooperation with the administration which has since taken over.

Somalia has been battling drought for the last several months which has left thousands of people displaced. Statistics from the United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
indicate that over 4 million risks dying for to the raging drought that has occasioned famine in the country.

The federal government of Somalia declared a state of emergency early this year, with dozens of proof reportedly dying to hunger in Jubaland and parts of Middle Shabelle. A number of countries have chipped in to assist the country.

UAE President orders provision of $9mln urgent humanitarian aid to Somalia
It’s not clear to me if this sum and the above $9.6 million are the same, being moved from one accounting category to another, or if they are two separate donations... or something else altogether. When I was involved in bookkeeping it was always completely straightforward, or so it appeared to me.
[Garowe] UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has ordered the provision of AED35 million of urgent humanitarian aid to Somalia to support its developmental efforts.

The directives of President His Highness Sheikh Mohammed to provide this assistance come within the framework of the fraternal relations between the two countries, and this initiative confirms the UAE's keenness to support friendly countries, and its efforts to develop its bilateral relations with Somalia.

The UAE's initiative aims to help meet the needs of the Somali people in various developmental areas, in an effort to improve their living conditions and enhance the Somali government's capacity to deal with the humanitarian challenges facing Somalia.

IMF extends Somalia funding following election
[Garowe] The International Monetary Fund has agreed to extend the duration of a crucial aid package to Somalia, a bigwig said, following a long-overdue presidential election last weekend.

The three-year $400-million (380-million-euro) aid package from the IMF had been set to automatically expire on May 17 if a new administration was not in place by then, with multiple election delays adding to the heavily indebted country’s turmoil.

But last week the IMF Executive Board accepted the Somali government’s request for a three-month extension until August 17, giving newly-elected President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s government time to examine and endorse planned reforms.

"The extension will provide the time needed to confirm policy understandings with the new government and confirm financing assurances with development partners," Laura Jaramillo Mayor, the IMF’s mission chief for Somalia, told AFP in an email sent late Thursday.

Somalia’s international partners have welcomed the election of President Mohamud, with many hoping it will draw a line under a long-running political crisis that has distracted the government from other threats, including a violent mostly peaceful insurgency and a devastating drought.

Under the terms of the IMF program, Somalia’s debt could fall to $557 million as early as 2023, Jaramillo told AFP in an interview in February.

That in turn would allow Mogadishu to attract more funding from international partners and help develop its private sector.

One of the poorest countries in the world, with over 70 percent of its population living on less than $1.90 a day, Somalia is struggling to recover from decades of civil war and has also been battling the Islamist al-Shabaab

insurgency for decades.

Every month, the federal government runs short of $10 million to cover crucial expenses such as staff salaries.

Meanwhile,

Y'got the wrong guy! he yelled just before Sergeant Malone's billy club landed...

a severe drought threatens to drive millions into famine, with UN agencies have warned of a humanitarian catastrophe unless early action is taken.

Mohamud — who served as president between 2012 and 2017 and is the first Somali leader to win a second term — has promised to transform the troubled Horn of Africa nation into "a peaceful country that is at peace with the world".

Abuja Chief Imam, Maqari Must Be Removed From Office, Prosecuted For Justifying Brutal Murder Of Deborah Samuel
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

Nobel laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka, has demanded that the Islamic authorities in the country remove Prof Ibrahim Maqari, the Deputy Chief Imam of Abuja's National Mosque, for supporting the lynching of Deborah Samuel Yakubu, a Christian student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto State, by her colleagues.

Soyinka said on Saturday that Maqari should "be tried under any existing laws that approximate hate rhetoric, incitement to murder and abuse of office."

About a week ago, Maqari had posted on Twitter, "It should be known to everyone that we the Moslems have some redlines beyond which MUST NOT be crossed. The dignity of the Prophet (PTUI!) is at the forefront of the redlines.

"If our grievances are not properly addressed, then we should not be criticised for addressing them ourselves."

The Nobel laureate noted that while the Sultanate of Sokoto had condemned the act, Maqari "implicitly directed his followers to take the law into their own hands in the name of religion, and in a nation beset on all sides by wars of ultra-nationalism."

Soyinka stated these in his address, titled, "In Time of crisis: Civilian and soldier" which was delivered in Abuja at the launching of a memorial publication on the late Lt Gen Ibrahim Attahiru, the immediate past Chief of Army Staff who died in 2021 in a plane crash.

Soyinka said, "No one will deny that we all owe a duty to the living, but some incline to the stance that such duty terminates with the living. Well, in my school of reflection and the testimony of history, that duty extends to death and beyond. That claim is grounded, not in mere sentiment, not in attachment to morbidity or unassuaged grief but in banal self-interest. For instance if, having failed to save Akaluka, having failed to rescue Oluwatosin, setting aside hundreds, possibly thousands of others, we had openly, justly and rigorously ensured justice in the crime that terminated their existences, we would not now be apologising to the late victim of such religion inspired barbarity — Ms. Deborah Samuel.

"Of course we are not all to be found within the same terrain of sensibilities — absolutely no! And that has been demonstrated most vividly by the very nature of responses that have been exacted after the nation’s recent exercise in human sacrifice. The nation’s president, traditional rulers — among them the Sultan of Sokoto who also serves as the Amir of Nigerian moslems, women organizations, workers’ unions and professionals from all walks of life, young and old, have raised their voices in accents of apology and condemnation. However a glorified holy man, no less than the Grand Vizier of the iconic Mosque of the nation’s capital, Abuja, has inserted a dissenting voice.

"The young woman, Deborah, he declared, deserved her death. This mullah, allegedly a man of learning, since his name is professorially captioned, says that there is a line, a red line that none of us must cross, no matter who we are, what we think, profess or value. Like the late Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran, this mere mortal has declared himself a Supreme Being with the power of life and death over all the denizens of the world. His call is unambiguous. Professor Ibrahim Maqari has placed his myrmidons of faith on the alert, primed to emulate the example of these death dealing mutants of fanatic indoctrination.

"Professor Imam Ibrahim Maqari however insists, with a handful of others including a vocal serving policeman quite recently, that there is no remorse attached to the torture and lynching of a young student on this earth we all share. To anyone who cares to listen, Maqari has implicitly directed his followers to take the law into their own hands in the name of religion, and in a nation beset on all sides by wars of ultra-nationalism and religious fanaticism. That is the message of a supposedly holy man to youths, to us, his message to a nation embroiled in a madness of multiple insurgencies.

"If Professor Grand Imam Maqari can draw a line in blood, the rest of the community of equal rights must proceed to draw their own, but they will do so in less primitive, bloodthirsty mode, in full respect of human dignity.

"That apostate of the creed of humanity, Professor Maqari, must be removed from office. It is no longer sufficient for all to declaim that Islam is this and that, that the Sharia is thus and thus, that Prophet Mohammed set this or that example and made this or that humanistic pronouncement. We have gone beyond theocratic rhetoric that merely pays lip service to civilized norms. Let all pietistic denunciations be backed by affirmative action.

"The Grand Seer of Abuja mosque should be hounded from office. He should be tried under any existing laws that approximate hate rhetoric, incitement to murder and abuse of office."

about his unfavorable stance on the Nordic countries' admission into NATO, agreeing to bolster each other's security and take a stance against terrorism.

"NATO allies Finland and Turkey will commit to each other's security and our relationship will thus grow stronger. Finland condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations," Finnish President Sauli Niinisto tweeted following "an open and direct phone call" with Erdogan.

Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said she is looking forward to strengthening "bilateral relations, including on peace, security, and the fight against terrorism," in talks with the Ottoman Turkish president.

Turkey has long accused Nordic countries, in particular Sweden, which has a strong Ottoman Turkish immigrant community, of harboring members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), an gang struggling for Kurdish rights in Turkey and designated a terrorist organization by the country.

The Ottoman Turkish president on Saturday said his country does not view the entry of Sweden and Finland into the security alliance "positively" unless the two countries address Ankara's concerns, telling Niinisto that disregarding "terror" organizations threatening fellow NATO allies was "incompatible with the spirit of friendship and alliance."

"Unless Sweden and Finland clearly show that they will stand in solidarity with Turkey on fundamental issues, especially in the fight against terrorism, we will not approach these countries' NATO membership positively," said Erdogan to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in a phone call.

Turkey expects the two applying countries to abandon financial, political, and arms support for the PKK and its alleged Syrian offshoot, the People's Protection Units (YPG) in order to approve their membership request, Erdogan said, adding that they would only be favorable to the alliance's enlargement if their "sensitivities" are respected.

on Thursday expressed his support for the Nordic countries' NATO application. He said "Finland and Sweden make NATO stronger," and offered America's "full, total, complete backing" to their request.

Moscow's February 24 invasion of Ukraine has swung political and public opinion in Finland and Sweden in favor of membership as a deterrent against Russian aggression.

Admission into NATO requires all 30 members of the alliance to unanimously agree to extend a formal invitation.

Olde Tyme Religion
Iraq’s dwindling Sabean-Mandaeans cling to their faith
Possibly the original people and religion of the queen of Sheba. It seems as if all the peoples mentioned in the Old Testament have continued to exist to the present day, most of them somehow in Iraq.
[Rudaw] Members of the Sabeans, also known as the Sabean-Mandaeans, submerged themselves in the Tigris River in Baghdad on Wednesday to wash away their sins and pray for a safe life during the dwindling group's holy Golden Baptism ritual.

Sabeans are followers of a monotheistic religion that predates Christianity and Islam and have has struggled since 2003 to cling to their faith amid sectarian tensions experienced in the country during the following years.

During the Holy festival, they dress in white and pray before being baptized in the waters of the Tigris river. Food, washed in the same water, is traditionally served during the feast after the baptism is concluded.

Dalal Ghanim, a Sabean-Mandaean community member, told Rudaw’s Halkawt Aziz on Wednesday that many followers of his religion do not have a job."We are calling for peace and security. We want peace," he said. "Many families among us migrated abroad due to insecurity."

According to data from the Sabean-Mandaeans Affairs Council, until 2003, nearly 100,000 Sabeans lived in Iraq before the country was plunged into bloody sectarian and religious conflict, of which minority groups bore the brunt of the crisis.

Sheikh Aanmar Uda, secretary-general of the Spiritual Council of Iraq, told Rudaw that before 2003, the Sabeans started to disperse across Iraq, living in provinces including Maysan, Basra, Nasiriyah, Baghdad, Erbil, and Kirkuk.

"In the wake of the events of 2003, they started to migrate in large numbers, many of them abroad," he said. "Today, the Sabean-Mandaeans have come to take part in this ritual from everywhere."

In the 1970s and 1980s, as Iraq experienced a profound economic boom despite its bloody wars, the Sabaeans, like most other minority groups, were a relatively integrated community with nearly 10,000 families, the majority of whom lived in Baghdad, the Nineveh Plains, and Kirkuk.

The overthrow of Iraq's dictator Saddam Hussein in 2003, whose brutal reign often resulted in systematic suppression of the Kurds and the Shiites, was detrimental to the survival of religious minority groups such as the Sabaeans, as well as the Shabaks, and the Yazidis.

Decades later, these groups have seen their number decline dramatically and their communities increasingly dissolved and fragmented.

Nasrallah: Resistance achieved great victory in Lebanese elections; also, Nakhba Day a catastrophe for all Arabs
[HODHODYEMENNEWS] General Secretary of Hezbollah. Sayyid His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah
...The satrap of the Medes and the Persians in Leb...
, says the Sunday parliamentary vote showed that "the resistance achieved great victory in the election."

In his remarks late on Wednesday, Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah said the large turnout and the outcome of the election conveyed a message of people’s adherence and commitment to the resistance.

He added that the huge support for Hezbollah and its allies in the election showed people’s commitment to the path of resistance.

After years of aggressive campaign targeting the resistance, spearheaded by the Americans, the number of votes and parliament members have only increased for Hezbollah and its allies in the Arab country, according to Sayyid Nasrallah’s speech.

The Hezbollah leader furthermore said that contrary to claims, there was no single bloc in the parliament that could claim the majority in elections, adding that "none of the honest political parties have made that claim."

"The advantage of not having a single party or group owning the majority in the parliament, is that it makes everyone equally responsible."

The Hezbollah leader said that "the nature of the crisis in Leb
...an Iranian colony situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozeen flavors of Christians. It is the home of Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers...
does not allow one single group to solve the crisis single-handedly even if they have the majority, which calls for cooperation between all different groups."

He also debunked lies promoted by the opposition, including claims that the resistance bloc has sought to postpone the election, that elections were held under the presence of Hezbollah’s weapons, or Iranian influence.

"We saw the American embassy and the electoral lists that were made there. We saw the Saudi ambassador and bags of money that were spent. Did anyone see any Iranian intruding in those elections?" he remarked.

Nasrallah called for changing the current election law, saying "it should not be possible for people to win a seat in the parliament with 500 votes while others who get thousands of votes do not reach the parliament."

Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah hastened to add that there are several reforms that need to be made in the election process, such as setting the voting age at 18. The division of the districts should also be changed and replaced with making Lebanon a single electoral district, he insisted.

Hassan Nasrallah has said that Nakba Day 'not only a catastrophe for Palestine but for all the Arab nations in the region.'

[HODHODYEMENNEWS] General Secretary of the Hezbollah movement, Sayyid His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah has said that Nakba Day, which marks the dau when the Zionist regime was created, was "not only a catastrophe for Paleostine but for all the Arab nations in the region."

"The Paleostinian people will no longer wait for Arab regimes to come to their help, as they have chosen the path of resistance against the occupying Israeli regime," Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah said, stressing that" "Arab regimes are unable to protect their own nations, let alone defend the Paleostinian cause."

The Sayyid said this during his speech on Friday, commemorating the 6th anniversary of the martyrdom of Sayyid Mustafa Badr al-Deen, a military leader of Hezbollah and an advisor to Sayyid Nasrallah himself.

The Hezbollah leader said that martyr Badr al-Deen "fought against the global arrogance
That'd be us. They get tired of bitching about the Great Satan sometimes.
led by the United States and the Israeli regime."

"Badr al-Deen’s generation did not wait for any Arab, Islamic, or international decisions to start their resistance," he stated.

According to Nasrallah, "the Paleostinian people too will no longer wait for Arab regimes, the Arab League
...an organization of Arabic-speaking states with 22 member countries and four observers. The League tries to achieve Arab consensus on issues, which usually leaves them doing nothing but a bit of grimacing and mustache cursing...
, or the United Nations
...an idea whose time has gone...
to come to their help in the fight against the Israeli occupation."
