[ToloNews] Elders in the southern province of Kandahar have said that the internal rifts between local officials in the province and the mismanagement of local affairs are causing massive security threats in the area.
According to politicians from Kandahar, internal rifts between the governor, police chief and local officials have been damaging the morale of the security forces, and several security check points have already fallen to the Taliban ...Arabic for students... due to these tensions.
However, a clean conscience makes a soft pillow... local officials in Kandahar refrain from commenting on these controversies, but politicians from Helmand ...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan... and Kandahar provinces have said that there is a need to bring reform in the security sector in the province.
The politicians said that the war has now reached the doorstep of the city, adding that the Kandahar governor, the head of the National Directorate of Security ...the Afghan national intel agency... (NDS) for Kandahar and the police chief have failed to correct the situation.
According to the politicians, a lack of coordination between government forces and a lack of effort by politicians, including former President Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai ...A product, and probably the sole product, of the Southern Alliance... , to settle tribal issues in the province have also been key factors in the growing unrest.
Dand, Arghandab, Zhari and Panjwai districts in Kandahar have witnessed growing threats over the past few months.
"Internal rifts have left a major impact on the morale of the security forces—even some of the govt forces who were in contact with the Taliban left their check points and surrendered to them," said MP Shagofa Noorzai.
According to the sources in Kandahar, along with the political disagreements, tribal issues have also added to the woes of security threats in the area.
"Political disagreements are there. The disputes are between those who support Abdullah and Ghani and those who were supporting Hamid Karzai—even they helped the Taliban on some occasions," said former MP Lalai Hamidzai.
But it is the local people who pay the price of the disagreements between local officials in the province.
"The people have been devastated, our homes were destroyed, our people are destroyed,’ said an internally displaced person in Kandahar, Sardar Mohammad.
"The people do not have food to eat, all of them become displaced from their homes," said Noor Ahmad, an IDP in Panjwaji district in Kandahar.
In recent months, the Afghan Chief of Army Staff made a handful of trips to the war fronts in Kandahar to monitor the campaign against the Taliban; however, the scale of the war continues to grip several districts in the province.

The Trump administration quit the pact in 2018. Then in August last year former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he had triggered a 30-day process at the Security Council that led to the return of U.N. sanctions on Iran and stopped a conventional arms embargo on Tehran from expiring on Oct. 18.
Thirteen of the 15 Security Council members said Washington's move was void because Pompeo used a mechanism agreed under the 2015 nuclear deal that the Trump administration had abandoned.
The Trump administration argued it had triggered the return of sanctions - known as "snapback" - because a U.N. resolution that enshrined the 2015 nuclear pact still named the United States as a participant.

So far Biden has continued the US sanctions against Iran. In fact on 8 Feb, Biden said the sanctions would continue until Iran complied with the 2015 JCPOA (which of course would be impossible for Iran given that they would have to dispose of a lot of enriched U and other stuff).
So unless Biden moves on the 8 Feb policy, anything he does directly on Iran is pretty symbolic.
Indirectly we help Iran by curtailing oil production in the USA (as it raises world oil prices). This probably matters more than all the symbolic stuff.

[AnNahar] A hardline Death Eater group running Syria's last major opposition bastion released on Wednesday an American self-described journalist accused of having ties to jihadists, a war monitor said.
"The Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, formerly al-Nusra, before that it was called something else ...al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate, from which sprang the Islamic State... (HTS) alliance has released Bilal Abdul Kareem, who has American nationality," the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
HTS in August detained Abdul Kareem in Idlib province after the self-styled journalist published an interview with a woman who accused the group of torturing her husband in detention, the Observatory said.
The jihadist-led alliance had sentenced Abdul Kareem to a year and a half in detention but agreed to an early release after receiving "guarantees" from local leaders who petitioned HTS to drop charges, according to the Britannia-based Observatory.
Born Darrell Lamont Phelps, Abdul Kareem converted to Islam before moving to the Middle East in 2002.
The self-described bald headed black guy from the Bronx left a wife and children in Egypt before heading off to satisfy his curiosity about the jihadis in Syrian.
He arrived in Syria in 2012 from Libya, curious about the rebels battling Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad Terror of Aleppo ... 's forces in a conflict which at that point was just a year old.
He has reported from shrinking rebel territory in Syria's north, filming the aftermath of air strikes, interviewing hardline fighters, even meeting al-Qaeda members.
His contacts in the jihadist-led HTS alliance have granted him extensive access at a time when the risk of abduction makes much of Syria too dangerous for journalists from mainstream news outlets.
But it has also prompted allegations that Abdul Kareem is a "jihadist propagandist" and would not have survived in the area had he been an impartial journalist -- particularly given HTS's history of harsh crackdowns against perceived foes.
The jihadist group and its allies now control roughly half of the northwestern province of Idlib and slivers of adjacent governorates.
[Gladstone Institute] The IAEA at first did not take these reports of a secret Iranian atomic warehouse seriously. This should not be surprising: the IAEA has a long history of misreporting the Iranian regime's compliance with the deal and declining to follow up on credible reports about Iran's illicit nuclear activities.
Iran's nuclear deal has dangerous fundamental flaws, specifically the ability to enrich uranium in the first place -- as the preeminent US nuclear negotiator Ambassador John R. Bolton wrote a few years ago, without it, no bomb -- and the deal's notorious sunset clauses that remove restrictions on Iran's nuclear program after the deal soon expires.
After a significant amount of pressure was imposed on the IAEA, the UN nuclear watchdog, inspecting the suspected site that the Israeli Prime Minister referred to was implemented two years later, in the fall 2020. Even then, although Iran's leaders certainly had enough time to clean up the facility, the IAEA's inspectors nevertheless reported that traces of radioactive uranium had been detected by examining remaining samples.
It should also not come as surprise that the ruling mullahs of Iran are declining to answer the IAEA's questions.
It is also important to point out that one of the most basic requirements of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), to which Iran is a party, as well as one of the terms of the 2015 "nuclear deal," was that the Iranian regime is required to reveal its nuclear activities to the IAEA -- a condition with which it also failed to comply.
The detection of radioactive particles in Turquz Abad not only points to the high probability that Tehran has been undertaking work on nuclear weapons in secret; it also points to the high probability that Iran's ruling mullahs have most likely been violating the nuclear deal since it was reached in 2015.

...In fairness, it should be pointed out that the Iranian bomb program goes back to the mid -70s and the Shah, who quite flatly didn't trust the US to defend him against a Soviet invasion, and wanted to be sure he had the means to make the Soviets wish they'd never tried. Either way though, the Mullahs aren't giving up their bomb unless somebody wipes out the project.
