Taliban release prominent Afghan academic Faizullah Jalal
[DW] Family members of the well-known professor Faizullah Jalal announced news of his release on social media. He had been arrested by the Taliban
...Arabic for students...
for "trying to instigate people."

A well-known Afghan professor who had been arrested by the Taliban over the weekend has been sprung.

Professor Faizullah Jalal was detained by the Islamist group on Saturday for allegedly making inflammatory statements on Twitter.

News of his release was made known by his daughter Hasina Jalal, who took to Twitter to confirm he had indeed been freed.

"After more than four days of detention on baseless charges," she wrote. "I confirm that Professor Jalal is now finally released!"

WHY WAS JALAL ARRESTED?
On Saturday, the academic's wife, Massouda Jalal, posted on Facebook that the Death Eater group had taken the professor from his home and that he was "transferred to an unknown place."

The Taliban's front man, Zabihullah Mujahid, said on Saturday that Jalal had made statements on Twitter that "were provoking people against the government and playing with people's dignity.''

Jalal's family said that the account cited by the Taliban was not the professor and was a fake account.

Hasina Jalal said she had reported the matter to Twitter on January 5, adding that her father had never been active on the platform.

AN OUTSPOKEN CRITIC
Shortly after news of Jalal's arrest circulated, there was an outpouring of support from various quarters. There was also condemnation with calls for the professor's immediate release.

Jalal has been an open critic of Afghanistan's leadership for years and has expressed his feelings on former Presidents Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai
...Former president of Aghanistan, part of the problem not part of the solution...
and Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, ex-president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. When Biden abandoned the country left with a helicopter, four cars, and part of the national treasury...
In November, Jalal clashed with Taliban front man Mohammad Naeem during a television debate.

In addition to being heavily critical of the Taliban's policies, he referred to Naeem as a "calf."

The professor was widely praised by Taliban critics for his courage in expressing his views. At the time, many social media users changed their profile pictures to that of Jalal.

Ethiopian drone strike kills 17 on day of Biden-Abiy call
[Garowe] An Æthiopian dronezap has killed 17 civilians in the country’s Tigray region on the day that U.S. President Joe The Big Guy Biden
...46th president of the U.S., father of Hunter, close friend of an imaginary negro named Corn Pop. He blames Trump for losing Afghanistan....
during a call with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed expressed concern about such attacks in the ongoing war, local authorities say.

A report by the zonal administration said women at a flour-grinding mill made up most of those killed in the Monday dronezap near Mai Tsebri, a source who saw the report told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about it to news hounds.

Such dronezaps have been reported almost daily in Tigray, a humanitarian worker in the town of Shire told the AP, with an attack over the weekend on a displaced person camp in Dedebit killing at least 57 people and wounding more than 130, many of them children. The aid worker shared photos of partially charred bodies and small corpses laid out on the ground.

A front man for Æthiopia’s government and military didn’t respond to questions about Monday’s dronezap.

Mr. Biden expressed concerns in Monday’s phone call with Æthiopia’s Prime Minister about detentions and civilian killings in the war against Tigray forces while commending Abiy for the release of several high-profile political prisoners.

The White House said Mr. Biden raised to Abiy the Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
s that continue to cause civilian casualties and suffering in Africa’s second-most populous nation.

The statement added that the leaders "discussed ways to accelerate dialogue toward a negotiated cease-fire, the urgency of improving humanitarian access across Æthiopia, and the need to address the human rights
...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless...
concerns of all affected Æthiopians, including concerns about detentions of Æthiopians under the state of emergency."

Abiy on Twitter described the conversation with Mr. Biden as "candid" and both agreed "there is great value in strengthening our cooperation through constructive engagement founded on mutual respect."

The call was requested by Mr. Biden after Jeffrey Feltman, the outgoing U.S. special envoy to the Horn of Africa, visited Æthiopia last week for talks with big shots.

The more than year-long war has created a devastating humanitarian crisis. The conflict entered a new phase in late December when Tigray forces retreated into their region amid a new military offensive and Æthiopian forces said they would not advance further there.

Mr. Biden stressed to Abiy that the two sides must take advantage of the moment and called on the Æthiopian leader to improve humanitarian access, according to a senior administration official who briefed news hounds on the leaders’ call on the condition of anonymity. White House officials are concerned that if momentum is not maintained, the conflict — which has left thousands dead and hundreds of thousands facing famine — could further deteriorate.

Æthiopia’s government has sought to restrict reporting on the conflict and detained some journalists, including a video freelancer accredited to the AP, Amir Aman Kiyaro.

Around 300-400 Russian mercenaries operate in Mali: French official
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] From 300 to 400 Russian mercenaries are operating in central Mali, a senior French armed forces ministry official said, challenging an assertion by the West African country’s junta that only Russian military trainers are deployed there.

Other West African nations have closed their borders with Mali, severed diplomatic ties and imposed economic sanctions in response to its delay in holding elections following a 2020 military coup, the 15-state regional bloc said on Sunday.

The moves were also a response to the arrival of private military contractors from the Russian Wagner Group, whose members are mostly ex-service personnel.

"I would say there are around 300-400 members of Wagner and there are also Russian trainers, who provide equipment," the French official told news hounds at a briefing late on Monday.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the Russian mercenaries had deployed with Malian forces to the center of the country.

Mali’s junta, which has proposed a five-year transition rather than stepping down in February as initially planned, has said the new forces are military instructors who came with equipment they bought from Russia.

The European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
has imposed sanctions on the Wagner Group, accusing it of clandestine operations on the Kremlin’s behalf. President Vladimir Putin
...President-for-Life of Russia. He gets along well with other presidents for life. He is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substance. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to him. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substances...
has said the group does not represent the Russian state, but that private military contractors have the right to work anywhere in the world as long as they do not break Russian law.

La Belle France has thousands of troops fighting Islamist hard boyz in the Sahel region
... North Africa's answer to the Pak tribal areas...
and in December joined 15 other countries, mostly European states operating in Mali, in condemning the possible arrival of mercenaries.

Gay Paree has said any such move would be incompatible with the French presence in Mali.

"The fact that Wagner is in a different part of Mali limits the risk of interaction which would be very difficult (for us) to accept," the French official said. "They (the junta) made the choice to turn their backs on the Europeans, the Americans and Africans and that brings consequences."

He said consultations were under way between La Belle France and its European partners, who have provided special forces in Mali, on how to respond. Decisions are likely at European Union level at the end of January, he said.

Germany: 'Massive' cocaine bust uncovered in sugar shipment
[DW] Workers at a food production plant accidentally uncovered the illegal drug while opening up a shipment of sugar. Authorities in Saxony said it was the largest cocaine bust in the state's history.

Authorities recovered 700 kilograms (1,540 pounds) of cocaine in total, describing the bust as "massive."

The cocaine has an estimated street value of over €150 million ($170 million).

The drugs were uncovered by an unusual source — workers at a food production company located in a rural area between the cities of Dresden and Chemnitz.

The workers were unpacking a recent shipment of sugar when they came across the suspiciously wrapped cocaine bricks.
"We found 200, errr.... 5 kilos!"
They then quickly alerted the police, who were then joined by customs officers in Dresden.

Police are now working to uncover who was behind the shipment — and where it was headed.

It is unclear whether the cocaine was intended to be distributed in the state of Saxony, or whether it was a stopover.

Authorities made clear, however, that the company that made the initial discovery is not considered a suspect.

Drug busts are more common in Germany's port cities, where container shipments first land. In Hamburg, authorities uncovered 16 tons of cocaine alone the month of February last year.

IDF soldier moderately hurt in suspected West Bank ramming attack
[IsraelTimes] 19-year-old treated near Halamish settlement for wound to his legs, reportedly transported to Jerusalem hospital in same helicopter as suspected attacker

An Israeli soldier was moderately maimed Tuesday in what the military said was a suspected ramming attack near the West Bank settlement of Halamish, outside of Ramallah.

The Magen David Adom ambulance service said paramedics treated the 19-year-old at the scene for an injury to his legs. He was transported by helicopter to Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center in Jerusalem.

A hospital spokesperson said the soldier, whose name has not been released for publication, was in moderate condition, but stable and awake.

The army said the driver "arrived at the scene in a vehicle and accelerated toward Israel Defense Forces soldiers who were protecting the road. The terrorist hit one of the soldiers who was injured in his leg and evacuated by military helicopter for medical treatment at a hospital."

The IDF said the driver had been captured and would be questioned.

Hadassah Medical Center said the alleged attacker had been brought to the hospital with extensive bruising and cognitive impairment. No condition was listed for him, but media reports described him as moderately injured from the force of the crash.
and a righteous beating
Paleostinian media identified him as Mohammad Nazmi Yasin, a resident of Nabi Saleh, near Ramallah.

First responders indicated that the alleged attacker had been evacuated in the same helicopter as the soldier after the attack near Halamish, a settlement also known as Neve Tzuf.

The suspected attack came amid a recent rise in violence by Paleostinians against Israeli civilians and soldiers in the West Bank and Jerusalem, including a deadly shooting attack last month outside the illegal Homesh outpost, as well as an increase in violence by Israeli settlers against Paleostinians.

The IDF has deployed additional soldiers to the West Bank in an effort to prevent further violence.

5-year-old Killed, 3 Family Members Injured in Southern Philippine Bus Bombing
[BenarNews] A 5-year-old boy was killed and six people, including his two younger siblings, were maimed when a bomb went kaboom! aboard a bus on Tuesday in the southern Philippines, a region where armed holy warrior groups are active, military officials said.

The Mindanao Star Bus was traveling to Cotabato City when it was rocked by the earth-shattering kaboom near Aleosan town, injuring four children and three adults, said Lt. Col. John Baldomar, the front man of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division, which has jurisdiction over the area.

"The loud explosion was heard coming from the back of the bus," Baldomar said, adding the boy later died in a hospital.

An Aleosan town police front man said the bomb had been placed "where there were a lot of people sitting," Agence La Belle France-Presse news agency reported.

Baldomar said those injured, including an infant and a 3-year-old, were being treated at regional hospitals.

The state-run Philippine News Agency (PNA) reported the children were siblings of the boy who was killed and were being treated for injuries along with their father.

"My boy died due to multiple shrapnel wounds in different parts of his body," Haron Solaiman, said in a radio interview, according to PNA.

The bus was traveling from the southern city of Davao, President Rodrigo Duterte’s hometown, along the highway near Aleosan town where the blast occurred early Tuesday, Baldomar said. Following the blast, army and police ordnance Sherlocks combed the area for evidence.

POST-BLAST INVESTIGATION
"It’s hard to come up with suspects until such time that we are able to identify the components and the type of explosive that was used," Baldomar said. "The post-blast investigation is ongoing to determine the type of explosive that was used."

No one grabbed credit for the attack, but similar bombings in the past have been blamed on bully boyz linked to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
, according to officials.

Local Army Col. Jo Gonzales, a military brigade commander, told BenarNews that he suspected that the blast could be the handiwork ofMoro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

The MILF signed a peace deal with Manila and controls a Moslem autonomous area in the south.

"It’s under investigation. We are not discounting the involvement of the BIFF and Daulah Islamiyah groups," he said. The Daulah Islamiyah is the Philippine name for Islamic State (IS).

At least two BIFF factions have professed allegiance to the Islamic State.

In October 2010, 10 people were killed when a bomb destroyed a passenger bus in a nearby Matalam town, North Cotabato province.

More recently, BIFF bully boyz carried out two roadside kaboomings in 2021 that killed three and injured many others in the south. In 2019, the group carried out a series of kabooms, targeting a market and a restaurant that injured more than two dozen people.
