8 Police Killed in Balkh, 7 ANA Killed in Takhar
[ToloNews] At least eight police were killed in a Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
attack on Tuesday night in Balkh province, local officials said Wednesday.

Fawad Saleh, the Balkh highway police commander, said the attack took place at a highway police checkpoint in Alam Khail village of Balkh province.

There were 14 soldiers at the checkpoint and six soldiers survived the attack, Saleh said.

The checkpoint is located on the Balkh-Jawzjan highway.

A source told TOLOnews that the Taliban conducted the attack with the help of an infiltrator.

The Taliban have not commented yet.

Also on Tuesday night, seven ANA soldiers were killed in a Taliban attack in Takhar province, said the governor's office. ( In an earlier report TOLOnews quoted officials saying two were killed)

The incident happened late Tuesday night in Darqad district when a group of Taliban attacked a joint forces checkpoint.

Mohammad Jawad Hijri, a governor front man, said that in Darqand the number of dead security force members was seven, and 11 Taliban were also killed.

Two security forces and five Taliban were also maimed in the Darqad district attack.

Hijri said the Taliban fled the area after suffering heavy casualties.

The Taliban confirmed this attack.

More than 20 dead, many displaced after violence in Sudan's West Darfur
[AlAhram] At least 24 people were confirmed killed after a camp for internally displaced people was attacked in Sudan's West Darfur, an international peacekeeping official said on Wednesday, as brass hats arrived to try to calm the violence.

Krinding Camp, just east of state capital el-Geneina, was raided on Dec. 29-30 following a dispute between Arab and African ethnic groups, said Ashraf Eissa, a front man for the joint African Union

#1  The claim that Islam is a religion of peace is risible. The war in Darfur pits Arab Muslim tribes trying to destroy the African Muslim tribes. The Arab camel and cattle nomads despise the African tribes and use the derogatory term abeed (slave) to describe them. It seems ironic that the Arabic commonly uses abd (slave) as in Abd-allah, as a given name, and then as an insult in Africa.

Haftar-led Libyan Army scores big advance inside Tripoli
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Libyan National Army, led by their commander Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar
...Self-proclaimed Field Marshal, served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy, so it's kind of hard to describe him as a Qadaffy holdover. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. on Wednesday, giving their forces control of several sites in and around the city.

According to reports, the Libyan National Army was able to capture Military Engineering School, Plateau Project, Habda Project, Police Academy, and several other sites.

In addition to their advance, the Libyan National Army killed several fighters and destroyed a couple vehicles belonging to the Ottoman Turkish-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) forces.

This latest advance has put the Libyan National Army inside the southern part of Tripoli.

For the Government of National Accord, this vote could not come any sooner, as the Libyan National Army is quickly closing in on the capital’s city-center.

Unity govt says 3 killed in air raid south of Libya capital
[AlAhram] Three non-combatants were killed Wednesday in an air raid on a town south of Libya's capital Tripoli

, a front man for the UN-recognised government said.

"Three were killed and three maimed in an air raid on al-Sawani," Amin al-Hachemi, front man for the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord, told AFP.

Al-Sawani lies around 25 kilometres (15 miles) south of the capital and under GNA control.

Several shops were badly damaged in the air raid, Hachemi said.

On their Facebook page, forces loyal to the GNA published pictures of badly damaged buildings and vehicles, and accused pro-Haftar forces of carrying out the raid.

GNA forces said in a statement that they had captured 25 pro-Haftar fighters on Wednesday.

Sixteen inmates killed in fight in Mexican prison
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Sixteen inmates were killed and five more were maimed in a fight that broke out in a prison in the northern Mexican state of Zacatecas, the state government said in a statement Tuesday evening.

Security will be boosted at prisons in the state after the incident in the Varonil prison, which broke out around 2:30 pm on Tuesday afternoon, the government said.

An inmate was arrested with a firearm, and three more guns were found in the prison, as well as various knives.

The government has launched in an investigation to determine those responsible for the fight and how the weapons entered the prison, according to the statement.

The incident marks the latest blow to the security track record of Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who has struggled to combat rising violence in the country.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
ISIS claims to be behind Tuesday night attack in northern Caucus
[Arutz 7] - The Islamic State terror movement said, in a statement dated January 1st, that it was behind the Tuesday-evening attack in Magas, the capital of Ingushetia in the northern Caucus region, in which a Russian police officer was killed.

After two men ran over the officer in a vehicle, they attacked other officers with knives, wounding three of them. Police fire killed one of them while the other was wounded.
Update from An Nahar at 10:00 p.m. ET, mostly because it isn’t interesting enough to be a separate post for tomorrow in the midst of all that’s going down in Iraq at the moment:
The attackers were Akhmed Imagozhev, a well-known arm wrestler, and Mikail Miziev, both residents of Ingushetia and Russian citizens.

Miziev was shot dead by police while Imagozhev is in hospital, Ingushetia's government said.

The governor on Tuesday evening lambasted regional police, saying incompetence on New Year's Eve -- a huge Russian holiday -- led to the incident, while negligence resulted in the death as the officer was not wearing protective armour.

Ordering a boost in security measures, he said one of the attackers worked as a guard in the local culture centre.

Investigators launched a probe into an attempt on the life of police officers, making no mention of terrorism as a motive.

North Caucasus has been a hotbed of Islamic extremism after the breakup of the Soviet Union followed by two separatist wars in Chechnya, a region bordering Ingushetia.

Many radical Islamists went to Iraq and Syria in recent years to join IS and other jihadist groups.

The Islamic State group considers North Caucasus as part of its "caliphate" and has claimed several attacks, most recently on police near the presidential palace in Chechnya in June.

Russian authorities frequently do not recognise these attacks as acts of terror.

India-Pakistan
Two soldiers killed fighting Pakistani infiltrators on the New Year day
[HindustanTimes] The Jammu and Kashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there....
police yesterday said there were 250 bandidos snuffies active in the union territory, of which 100 were foreigners and the rest were locals.

The new year started on a sombre note with two Indian Army soldiers losing their lives in an exchange of fire with Pak murderous Moslems, who were looking to sneak into India through the Line of Control (Loc) in Jammu and Kashmir in the wee hours on Wednesday. The heavily armed murderous Moslems’ advance was foiled by the security forces in the cordon and search operation in the Kalal area of the Nowshera sector in Rajouri.

"In the intervening night of Tuesday, a contact was established with infiltrators in a forest Rakh Taryath in Nowshera Sector. The heavily armed murderous Moslems retaliated by fire. In the ensuing exchange of fire, two soldiers of the Indian Army were critically injured and later gave up the ghost and attained martyrdom, said Public Relations Officer, Defence, Lt Col Devender Anand.

Reinforcements have been summoned for the operation, which was still in progress at the time of the publishing of this report.

The dear departed have been identified as Naik Sawant Sandip Raghunath (29) from Munde village in Karhad tehsil of Satara, Maharashtra and Rifleman Arjun Thapa Magar (25), from Nepal’s Gorkha district.

Sandeep Raghunath is survived by his wife Smita Sawant and Thapa Magar left his wife Sarita Thapa Magar behind.

The defence spokesperson said both Naik Raghunath and Rifleman Magar were "brave, highly motivated and sincere soldiers" whose "supreme sacrifice" and "devotion to duty" had left the nation in debt.
May they find themselves in the best afterlife they believe in.
According to Jammu and Kashmir police, eighty-three security personnel had bit the dust in anti-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir in 2018.

The J&K police yesterday said there were 250 bandidos snuffies active in the union territory, of which 100 were foreigners and the rest were locals.
Good to know. One assumes the foreigners are Lions of Islam from the Land of the Pure...
General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Army’s northern command Lt Gen Ranbir Singh visited the forward bases and posts along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on New Year day and reviewed operational preparedness.

Soleimani was an enemy of the United States. That’s not a question.

The question is this - as reports suggest, did America just assassinate, without any congressional authorization, the second most powerful person in Iran, knowingly setting off a potential massive regional war?

Summary of New Year’s Day’s events: Protesters withdraw from US embassy perimeter - Iraqi military
[Jpost] "All protesters have withdrawn, tents dismantled, and other forms of demonstrating that accompanied these protests have ended," the Iraqi military said.

All members of paramilitary groups and their supporters who have been protesting against US air strikes in Iraq have withdrawn from the perimeter of the US Embassy in Baghdad on Wednesday, the Iraqi military said."All protesters have withdrawn, tents dismantled, and other forms of demonstrating that accompanied these protests have ended and the Iraqi security forces have completely secured the embassy perimeter," it said in a statement. The protests, led by Iranian-backed militias, mark a new turn in the shadow war between Washington and Tehran playing out across the Middle East.US President Donald Trump
...dictatorial for repealing some (but not all) of the diktats of his predecessor, misogynistic because he likes pretty girls, homophobic because he doesn't think gender bending should be mandatory, truly a man for all seasons......
, who faces re-election in 2020, on Tuesday threatened to retaliate against Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan, the abbreviation IRGC is a cognate form of Stürmabteilung (or SA), the term Supreme Guide is a cognate form of either Shah or Führer or maybe both, and they hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
but said later he did not want to go to war.

The protests also cast uncertainty over the continued presence of US troops in Iraq.

Crowds had rallied on Tuesday to protest against deadly US air strikes on militia bases, setting fires, throwing rocks and smashing surveillance cameras. They did not breach the huge embassy's main compound, however.

Overnight, demonstrators pitched tents and camped outside the embassy walls. On Wednesday morning, they were bringing in food supplies, cooking equipment and mattresses, Rooters witnesses said, suggesting they intended to stay for a long time.

Senior Iraqi army officers had negotiated with those gathered outside the embassy in an attempt to convince them to leave but failed to do so. Washington is putting pressure on Iraqi leaders to ensure the security of its staff.

The incident marked a sharp escalation of the proxy conflict between Washington and Tehran - both influential players in Iraq - while mass protests are challenging Iraq's own political system nearly 17 years after the US invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.

The protests followed US air strikes on Sunday on bases operated by the Iranian-backed militia Kataib Hezbollah inside Iraq which killed at least 25 fighters and maimed 55. The strikes were retaliation for the killing of a US civilian contractor in a rocket attack on an Iraqi military base, which Washington blamed on Kataib Hezbollah.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei
...the actual dictator of Iran, successor to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini...
on Wednesday condemned the US attacks.

"The Iranian government, nation and I strongly condemn the attacks," Iranina state TV quoted Khamenei as saying.

Trump accused Iran of orchestrating the violence at the US Embassy and said Tehran would be held responsible. Iran rejected the accusation.

More US troops were being sent to the embassy, US officials said. The 750 troops would initially be based out of Kuwait. The officials said that as many as 4,000 troops could be sent to the region in the coming days if needed.

More than 5,000 US troops are stationed in Iraq supporting local forces. The air strikes have galvanized calls inside Iraq to expel US forces, not just from Iran-backed militias but also their political rivals.
The Times of Israel posted the following report at midday:
For weeks, the anti-government protesters have been trying to enter the Green Zone housing the government and the US Embassy, but have been beaten back by security forces, who have killed hundreds of demonstrators.

The militiamen and their supporters, however, were able to quickly enter the Green Zone and mass in front of the embassy, with little if any resistance from authorities.

By Wednesday morning, they had set up a small sit-in of their own, with around 50 tents set up between two main gates about 500 meters (yards) apart. Demonstrators set up a makeshift clinic and cooks with aprons reading “Popular Mobilization Forces logistical support” served meals out of giant pots. Mobile toilets were also set up in the area.

Vehicles belonging to the Popular Mobilization Forces, with government plates, were parked nearby, and the militiamen manned checkpoints where they searched all those arriving at the site of the demonstration.

Outside one of the gates, a Shiite cleric recited verses from the Muslim holy book, the Quran, through a loudspeaker. Another cleric led the protesters in midday prayers.

Demonstrators could be seen hurling rocks over the walls of the embassy compound, where US troops responded by firing tear gas from the roofs of buildings. Iraqi security forces deployed nearby watched the standoff unfold without intervening.
And from the Jerusalem Post:
The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad said on Wednesday that all public consular operations were suspended, a day after Iran-backed militias and their supporters stormed its outer perimeter, setting fires, throwing rocks and smashing surveillance cameras.

"Due to militia attacks at the U.S. Embassy compound, all public consular operations are suspended until further notice. All future appointments are canceled. U.S. citizens are advised to not approach the embassy," it said in a statement.

#1  Iranian Regime Under Seige, Maybe Attacking US ME Assets to Rally a unhappy population and are blaiming the US for domestic unrest.

Major Iran protests erupted in November 2019 triggering the greatest existential crisis in the regime's 40-year history. Protesters took to the streets in at least 191 cities calling for regime change. The regime has resorted to brute repression, killing at least 1500 protesters and arresting thousands more. It also shut down Iran’s internet completely for a week, blocking images of the protests from reaching the outside world.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE IRAN PROTESTS:
Number of restive cities: 191
Number of martyrs: At least 1500
Number of injured: More than 4,000
Number of detainees: More than 12,000

The protests began on November 15, 2019 over a three-fold rise in gasoline prices but in less than 24 hours, the chants became entirely political. Iranians are chanting “Death to Khamenei” and “Death to Rouhani” on the streets of Iran. They want regime change.

#2  So members of some group attacked the embassy, and brought in tents and whatever, evidently planning to stay and continue their obnoxious behavior.
Trump threatened to retaliate against Iran if this continued,
The group quickly changed its plan and withdrew.
Sounds pretty wimpy on their side.
The Ayatollah got scared?

#3  The other side didn't have the will to engage further with more US assets arriving, or they didn't think this was the time for an engagement.

Call it a half blink.

Turkish and Syrian armies trade attacks in Idlib as situation worsens
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Ottoman Turkish and Syrian armies have traded attacks in the eastern countryside of the Idlib Governorate today, with both sides firing heavy artillery at one another.

According to a field report from northwest Syria, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) heavily shelled the eastern countryside of Idlib Governorate, as some of their artillery shells hit the Ottoman Turkish observation post at Ma’ar Hathat.

In response, the Ottoman Turkish military fired several artillery shells towards the Syrian Army’s positions near the Jarjanaz front in southeastern Idlib.

The Syrian Army was also attacked from the Ottoman Turkish military’s observation post in the town of Sarman, which is currently besieged from all sides by the government forces.

#1  firing artillery but not killing many

Deaths from the civil war in Syria dropped to about 11,000 in 2019 which is horrible (except that perhaps 10% or so were genuine terrorists whose death is a benefit to humanity) but not as horrible as the 70+k deaths in 2013 and 2014 (per the various monitoring groups).

Syrian Army launches retaliatory attack against Turkish forces in northern Syria
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) launched a retaliatory attack against the Ottoman Turkish Armed Forces in northern Syria this week after the latter struck their troops in the northern countryside of the al-Raqqa Governorate.

According to a military source in northern Syria, the Syrian Army fired several artillery shells and missiles towards the Ottoman Turkish Armed Forces and their allied murderous Moslems in the town of Fars and its surroundings.

The Syrian Army also targeted the Ottoman Turkish-backed "Syrian National Army" (SNA) near the International Highway that links the historic provincial capitals of Aleppo and al-Hasakah.

The source said the Syrian Army is working to strengthen their posts in northern Syria after the attack that was carried out by the Ottoman Turkish Armed Forces over the weekend.
