15 die in airstrikes in Derna
At least 15 people were killed, including women and children, in airstrikes on the eastern Libyan city of Derna late on Monday night, said a medical source.

The National Libyan Army has been besieging the city for months and has carried out intermittent airstrikes against it.

Military officials refused to comment on the latest strikes.

A resident of the city said that the shelling last about an hour and that they targeted the al-Dhahr al-Hamr neighborhood in southern Derna and the mountainous al-Fatayeh region, 20 kms away from the city.

The medical source said that at least 17 people were wounding in the strikes, adding that so far all victims were civilians.

The coastal city of Derna lies 265 kms away from the Egyptian border in the west. It is currently under the control of an alliance of extremists and former members of the “Shura Council of the Derna Mujahideen”.

The ISIS terrorist group captured ISIS in late 2014, but the Council managed to expel it in the following year.

Libya coastguard rescues nearly 300 migrants at sea
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Libya's coastguard has rescued nearly 300 migrants colonists including dozens of women and kiddies from unseaworthy boats as they tried to reach Europe, a navy official said Wednesday.

The 299 migrants colonists, who included 40 women and 19 children, were picked up early Tuesday in Mediterranean waters off the western city of Zliten, navy front man General Ayub Kacem said.

The migrants colonists, of different African nationalities, were plucked from two rubber dinghies without engines and brought back to the Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
naval base, he said.

They were given food and medical attention before being transferred to a detention centre, Kacem added.
Since the 2011 uprising that toppled longtime dictator Moamer Qadaffy, chaos-hit Libya has become a key point of departure for migrants colonists heading to Europe.

Last month forces loyal to Libya's UN-backed unity government ousted a militia controlling the trafficking from the western city of Sabratha.

The United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
last month said Libyan authorities were holding more than 14,500 migrants colonists who had previously been kept captive by smugglers in farms, houses and warehouses in and around the coastal city.

Islamist attacker stabs two Tunisian policemen near parliament
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A hardline Islamist stabbed two Tunisian coppers on Wednesday in front of parliament, gravely wounding one of them, the interior ministry said.

"A Salafist attacked two coppers with a knife. One was struck on the forehead, and the other stabbed in the neck and is in intensive care," ministry front man Yasser Mesbah said.

Outside one of the entrances to parliament, bloodstains were visible at the site of the attack, which was cordoned off by police.

The ministry in a statement said that the assailant was tossed in the slammer
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
and confessed to having adopted three years ago an hard boy line of thought that views members of the security forces as "tyrants".

"Killing them, he believes, is a form of jihad," it said.

An official at the cop shoppe where the man was taken after being detained said the attacker was in his 20s and appeared "very aware of what he did".

"He spoke calmly and showed no remorse," the official said, asking to remain anonymous.

"He told us: 'This morning, I prayed and I decided to do something for jihad. I saw the policeman in front of me. To me, he's a 'tyrant'. And I did what I did,'" the official quoted the detained assailant as allegedly saying.

Walid Hkima, a front man for the national security forces, told state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
the attack happened at around 8am (0700 GMT) and the assailant was quickly arrested.

Since its 2011 revolution, which sparked the Arab Spring, Tunisia has faced a series of jihadist attacks that have claimed the lives of more than 100 soldiers and police.

In 2015, the North African country was the target of several attacks claimed by the ISIS group that killed 72 people -- 59 of them foreign tourists.

The country has been under a state of emergency since November 2015, after one of those attacks killed 12 presidential guards in the heart of the capital.

In June 2015, 38 foreign tourists, including 30 from Britannia, bit the dust in an ISIS attack on a coastal holiday resort south of Tunis.

In March the same year, another ISIS attack at the National Bardo Museum in Tunis killed 21 foreign tourists and a policeman.

The Bardo museum is located in the same complex as the parliament.
Update from Al Ahram at 1:50 p.m. ET:
A Tunisian police officer who was stabbed by a suspected Islamist died of his wounds on Thursday, a national security spokesman said.

The suspect, named as Zied Gharbi, was arrested on Wednesday after two policemen were wounded with a knife near the parliament. He shouted "Allahu Akbar" - God is greatest - as he stabbed the policeman in the neck, witness and officials said.

"Our colleague Riadh Barrouta died Thursday after the terrorist attack in Bardo yesterday," Walid Hkima, a national security spokesman, said.

The attacker was 25 and from Ettadamen, one of the largest, poorest suburbs of Tunis.

The Interior Ministry said Wednesday's attacker had confessed that "he had adopted Takfiri thought three years ago and believes that killing security forces is a form of jihad".

Zied Gharbi has no ties with Islamist groups, but he had been influenced by hard-line ideology on the Internet, officials said.

Egypt security forces free officer kidnapped during Western Desert shootout with terrorists
[AlAhram] Egyptian security forces freed on Tuesday a police officer who was kidnapped during the deadly shootout earlier this month between coppers and turbans in Egypt’s Western Desert, Egypt's armed forces announced in a statement.

Police officer Mohammed El-Hayes was rescued in an operation by security forces near El-Wahat highway where a number of bad boyz were potted.

El-Hayes has been taken to a military hospital for treatment, the statement read.

The officer had gone missing during the 19 October incident, which killed 16 coppers as they executed a raid on a terrorist hideout in Bahariya Oasis about 135 kilometers (83 miles) southwest of Giza.

The Egyptian interior ministry has not yet released a statement on the rescue.

El-Hayes' brother, Atef, told al-Ahram Arabic news website that the family spoke to El-Hayes on the phone, and that he seemed in high spirits.

Anti-terrorism operation continues in Egypt's Western Desert: Armed Forces

[AlAhram] Egypt's Armed Forces announced on Wednesday that the joint military-police operation targeting terrorist hideouts in the Western Desert continued for the second day in a row, the Egyptian army said in a statement on Wednesday.

The Egyptian air forces - supported by special army commandoes units (Sae'ka) and police - carried out airstrikes in southern Fayoum, killing all terrorist targets.

Security forces are currently combing the area for any terrorists who may have escaped.

The Armed Forces released a video of the airstrike, as well as photos showing the dead bodies of the terrorists and destroyed vehicles including a pickup truck fitted with machine guns.

The operation comes after the shootout on 19 October in the Western Desert between security forces and terrorists, where 16 policemen were killed and 13 were injured.

More Mosul Moslem Mayhem

9 die by UABs in Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Nine Iraqis were killed by the explosion of a bombs left over in their homes in western Mosul, an Iraqi news channel reported on Wednesday.

Al-Rafidain quoted a source at Nineveh police service saying that six refugees the same family were killed when a bomb left over by Islamic State militants went off at their home in al-Thawra neighborhood in western Mosul. They had just returned from refugee camps, according to the source.

Another lady and two of her children were also killed in a similar incident in Tammuz district, again upon their return from a refugee camp.

Explosives planted by Islamic State militants during their occupation of several Iraqi cities have occasionally killed civilians and security personnel as Iraqi forces began to retake those regions.

Iraqi troops, backed by a U.S.-led coalition, took over Mosul from Islamic State militants early July, ending more than eight months of operations. IS members have frequently been accused of booby-trapping civilians’ houses to hinder assaulting troops, and of using civilians as human shields.

Iraqi troops come under mortar fire in Mosul

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Mortar missiles have been shot against Iraqi federal troops in northwestern Nineveh regions, a military source said on Wednesday.

“The shelling first came from Peshmerga troops deployed in the vicinity of Rabia and Zummar, located northwest of Nineveh,” the source told Alghad Press.

“No casualties have been recorded among the Iraqi troops yet,” the source said, adding that troops did not respond to the sources, from which mortars came.

Earlier on the day, Peshmerga’s Zeravani troops gave orders earlier on the day to rally at the northern borders of Erbil.

Joint Operations Command had said that Kurdistan Region Government and its delegation stepped back from the draft agreement made with Baghdad. It added that Kurdish troops were building new defenses, while talks were ongoing.

Suspected accomplices arrested in murder of Israeli man
[IsraelTimes] Paleostinians taken in for questioning over Reuven Schmerling's killing; security forces find illegal weapons in overnight sweeps, including a pistol in a plush toy

Security forces operating in the West Bank overnight Tuesday tossed in the slammer
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
suspected accomplices in the deadly stabbing earlier this month of an Israeli man in the Arab Israeli town of Kafr Qassem, the military said.

A joint IDF and Border Police operation nabbed the suspects in the town of Qabatiya, home to the two Paleostinian men indicted for the slaying of Reuven Schmerling, the IDF said in a statement Wednesday morning. The army did not say how many suspects it detained in connection with the murder.

On Sunday, Youssef Khaled Mustafa Kamil, 20, and Muhammad Ziad Abu al-Rub, 19, were indicted for premeditated murder and entering Israel illegally in a Central District court for the killing.

Schmerling’s body was discovered by police on October 4 near his coal storage unit in Kafr Qassem’s industrial zone. He had been stabbed dozens of times.

It was initially unclear if the murder was a terror attack, but in the days that followed the Shin Bet announced that it was believed to have been nationalistically motivated. According to the indictment, the suspects told interrogators they had carried out the murder to "avenge" their friend, who had been killed while attempting to carry out a stabbing attack in 2015.

In all, security forces arrested 17 suspects in the West Bank overnight, the IDF statement said. Thirteen are suspected of involvement in "popular terrorism," a catchall term used by the military to denote rock and Molotov cocktail attacks and violent rioting.

In the al-Am’ari refugee camp, soldiers arrested three suspected Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", operatives and confiscated NIS 50,000 ($14,200) it said was intended to fund terrorism in the West Bank.

During a search for illegal weapons in the villages of Umm Salamuna, south of Jerusalem, and Shuweika, in the northern West Bank, an improvised weapon was found, as well as a small pistol hidden inside a plush dog.

Security forces also escorted some 1,000 Jewish worshipers to the Joseph’s Tomb in the city of Nablus for prayers, the statement said.

On an almost monthly basis, the army escorts Jewish, and occasionally Christian, worshipers to the shrine. Israelis are forbidden from visiting the site without the military’s permission. In the past, Nablus residents have attacked the groups visiting the site with rocks, Molotov cocktails and rifle fire.

In October 2015, Paleostinian rioters set fire to the holy site. It was restored and reopened a few weeks later.

Hamas cedes control of Gaza crossings to PA
[PRESSTV] The Palestinian resistance Movement Hamas has ceded control of the Gaza crossings to the Palestinian Authority. Ceding the crossings to the Palestinian Authority came under a preliminary reconciliation deal between rival Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, last month in a bid to end the decade-long Palestinian rift.
Ynet adds:
Ministers from the Abbas-backed government of national consensus have begun gradually to assume their duties in Gaza in past weeks and on Tuesday took over the revenue accounts of the Rafah and Kerem Shalom crossings, officials said.

Hamas had used those revenues—taxes and fees collected from merchants and passengers—as part of its Gaza budget, to pay salaries of the 40,000 to 50,000 employees it has hired since 2007. Those wages will now be paid by the PA, under the Cairo agreement.

The Palestinian Authority will begin operating the Erez and Kerem Shalom crossings immediately, officials said, while in Rafah the operation will await further security arrangements such as deploying a force from Abbas's presidential guards and Cairo completing innovations on its side of the facility.

Indonesian ISIL fighter arrested in Marawi
[Al Jazeera] An Indonesian man, who reportedly played a role in the 2016 attacks in Jakarta, has been tossed in the slammer

near the southern Philippine city of Marawi, where fighters loyal to ISIS fought with the military for five months.

Muhammad Ilham Syaputra was caught on Wednesday while trying to escape from a district in Marawi, where several fighters of the Maute group are in hiding, according to police.

Syaputra reportedly attempted to evade authorities by swimming across Lake Lanao to a town adjacent to Marawi.

Foreign fighters killed in battle for Philippine city
His "foreign" appearance raised suspicion among residents who reported him to police.

John Guyguyon, chief of police in Lanao del Sur, where Marawi is located, said Syaputra told Sherlocks he is from northern Sumatra in Indonesia, and he came to the Philippines as early as November 2016 to take part in the planned Marawi siege.

Police seized from the suspect a .45 calibre handgun, some Indonesian passports, different currencies and jewellery.

During the interrogation, Syaputra also reportedly claimed to have played a role in the 2016 attacks in Jakarta's central business district, which left seven people dead, including attackers.

Syaputra was reportedly among the dozens of imported muscle from neighbouring Malaysia and Indonesia, as well as from Arab countries, who came to Marawi to join the fight. The number of fighters, however, remains unclear.

In recent weeks, police also killed the suspected "financier" of the siege, Mahmud Ahmad, a doctor and a Malaysian national.

Guyguyon said the arrest is a "big blow" to the ISIS-linked fighters, even though he warned others could still launch retaliatory attacks.

Russian bombers hit militant targets in Syria's Deir al-Zor
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Six long-range strategic bombers took off from their bases in Russia to hit Lion of Islam targets in the Syrian province of Deir al-Zor on Wednesday, Russian news agencies cited the Russian Defence Ministry as saying.

The Tu-22M3 planes flew over Iran and Iraq to hit the targets which included "terrorist" strongholds and depots with weapons and ammunition, TASS news agency reported.

The Russian Defense Ministry released footage on Wednesday of the Tu-22MZ bombers taking off and dropping bombs on ISIS group positions outside the Lion of Islam-held town of Boukamal (Abu Kamal) on the border with Iraq.

Syrian government forces are battling the murderous Moslems outside the town.

Russia has been providing air cover for the Syrian government’s operations against ISIS and rebels since 2015 but it has mostly used an airfield in Syria.

The Russian military said the Arclight airstrikes destroyed the Lion of Islams’ command posts and ammunition depots.

#1  I still find it interesting that they are striking from bases in Russia rather than somewhere locally in Syria.

A bit more expensive, but likely safer parking. And good practice in case something big jumps off further down the road.

Israeli jets bomb Syria arms depot
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Israel’s air force bombed a weapons depot in Syria’s Homs province on Wednesday, adding to a series of strikes in recent weeks, according to a monitoring group.

The Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said it was still unclear whether the depot belonged to the Syrian government or its Lebanese ally Hezbollah.

"Israeli planes fired rockets at an arms depot in the industrial zone of Hisyah, south of the city of Homs, the observatory’s director, Rami Abdel Rahman, told AFP.

Syrian television reported "an aggression" by Israel in the region, adding that the national army had "responded".

The Israeli army refused to comment on the report.

Israel has acknowledged carrying out Arclight airstrikes in Syria since the outbreak of the bloody war in the country six years ago to stop arms deliveries to Hezbollah forces.

The Syria observatory said Israel had also struck an arms depot near the Damascus airport on September 22, and this month targeted a jihadist faction linked to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group in southern Syria, killing at least 10.

Israel said last month it had attacked Syrian government artillery after fire from across the armistice line hit the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, and warned it would step up such retaliation in the future.
Ynet adds:
The factory that was attacked was allegedly affiliated with Lebanon-based terrorist group Hezbollah, according to Russian broadcasting channel RT Arabic, formerly known as Rusiya Al-Yaum.

The Lebanese-based, Hezbollah-affiliated Al Mayadeen television network additionally stated that there were "unconfirmed reports that Israel attacked a facility in an industrial area in the suburbs of Homs, and that the Syrian anti-aircraft systems responded" to the Israeli attack.

Al Mayadeen also noted that the Syrian army responded by firing a surface-to-air missile from the base of the Syrian army's 72nd Brigade.

The strike took place as Russian President Vladimir Putin visits Tehran and met with Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei earlier in the day, in an effort to strengthen the Russia-Iran-Syria alliance.
