B.O.: America's enemy is al-Qaida, not Islam
[Jerusalem Post] US President Barack Obama on Friday appealed to the American people to stand by the nation's belief in religious tolerance.
There's a difference between religious tolerance and stupidity. If I decide I'm the Pope of the Aztecs and round up financing to build a pyramid in downtown Washington D.C. to conduct human sacrifices I'll be surprised if I'm tolerated.

If fact, if I decide I'm a pagan and go back to sacrificing bullocks on the feast of Zeus or publicly partying until I barf on Bacchanalia I'll be surprised if I'm tolerated.

The Mormons weren't tolerated until they decided polygamy wasn't holy and I doubt if I'll be tolerated if, as pope of the Church of the Risen Elvis, I decide I can have up to a dozen wives as long as they wear beehive hairdos. And one of our sacraments is having group sex in public.

What'd they do to David Koresh when the story was spread -- true or false I still don't know -- that they were porking 10-year-olds in his "religious" compound?

Therefore having established that there are in fact practical limits to this idea of "tolerance," perhaps it's time to make some sort of rational exploration of what those limits might be. It's my not very humble opinion that the limits should stop short of tolerating murder of pregnant women, exploding without warning in public places, cutting off women's pubic lips, or burying those women alive under piles of rocks. As an afterthought I'd suggest that we not tolerate religions that regard the rest of us as vermin, but that's probably asking too much.

Coincidentally, all those things are adjuncts to the practice of Mohammedanism. Why, it was only last week that Hamas snuffies bumped off the pregnant lady. When the Paleostinian Authority went to arrest the perps the arrests were denounced as "treason." There are boomers virtually every day in Pakistain and periodically in other Islamic ratholes like The Islamic State of Iraq and The Chechen Republic of Ichkeria -- now overflowing to Dagestan and Ingushetia and occasionally showing up in Moscow or other civilized cities. I have no idea how many lipless ladies there are in the world, but estimates are that in Egypt it's as many as 90 percent of all women. And the theocrats who rule the Medes and the Persians with an iron hand were complaining just yesterday that the West's concern over their desire to stone a women to death in the manner of the 7th century and previous was just some sort of propaganda plot and warning us not to try and make it a "human rights" issue. That leaves open the question of whether people have a "human right" not to be pulped under a pile of rocks.

Obama's comments at a White House news conference come as a Florida pastor threatened to burn the Muslim holy book on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.
I think there's a special place in hell for people who burn books. Grind them up and use them for mulch, but don't burn them. If you want to tweak the Islamic beard ask them how their wives' pubic lips are doing and explain to them that there's a special place in hell as well for men who mutilate women.
A debate is also raging over whether an Islamic center should be built near the site of the attacks in New York City.
It's not a "debate." Powers that be have ruled that the Mohammedans will be allowed to build their victory mosque there. 70 percent of the populace is against it. Nobody asked the 70 percent's opinion. When the 70 percent impertinently gave its opinion it was told to shut the hell up. Even Mussolini was more subtle than that.
Obama said the public must remember that the country's enemy is not Islam, but al-Qaida and extremist groups.
That's a point we've made here many times, which in fact has resulted in a few bannings. Our allies in the fight against al-Qaeda are in many cases Muslim allies, and they cover a range from mostly harmless Sufism to being non-Qaeda Islamists. The fact that we're on the same side as them (at least for now) doesn't mean that we have to accept their imperfections. There's no reason not to push for religious tolerance in the Muslim world but we don't do it. There's no reason not to point out that civilized countries don't mutilate women, that a woman on the outside of a tampon is not going to cause an entire mosque to collapse upon itself, or that it's a mark of civilization to maintain one's self control, rather than erupting in riots every three or four days over some new slight, real or imagined.

Or maybe we should start rioting in the streets and burning the flags of Islamic countries whenever there's a "Death to America" demonstration. Who's up for that?

He explained that Americans cannot turn on each other and let their fears lead to division.
Meaning we should shut up and do as we're told?

#2  US pastor sets mosque talks deadline
I hear that US networks are black banning coverage on this subject, if so could someone let me know and I can update for the next hour or so. twenty minutes to end of deadline.

A Florida pastor who has threatened to burn the Koran has given a New York imam a two-hour deadline to clarify whether talks on moving a planned mosque further from Ground Zero will take place.

#3  Excellent framing of the issues.

He [Obama] explained that Americans cannot turn on each other and let their fears lead to division.

I'd say that 70% of people in liberal NYC is not a turning on each other and division.

Obama said the public must remember that the country's enemy is not Islam, but al-Qaida and extremist groups.

That is an oft-quoted statement. GWB also said that. BHO has said that. However, if one looks at the data objectively, how many muslims are moderate vs. extremists? How many others silently assent to islam's aims? If one looks at GB, France, or other European countries there has been a steady and maybe relentless push by muslims to basically hi-jack the existing culture.

#4  Where are teh muslim moderates in all this?

Why is it left to the office of the presidency to - again and again, for nine years now-- push a message that, to ahve any effect at all, can only come from within the muslim community itself?

Will the US president still be asked to go on point in delivering this "Religion of Peace," "don't-conflate-all muslims-with-jihadists" etc message twenty years from now? If so, no one will be listening anymore-- if we haven't reached that point already....

#5  Islam and the Constitution of the United States are incompatible with each other. "President" O'Bumble took an oath to support and defend the latter, to "bear true faith and allegiance, to it, and to "see that the laws of the nation are faithfully executed". It's put-up or shut-up time, and O'Bumble not only doesn't want to talk about the issue, and wants all of us to shut up, also. Tell him to go stick a Quran in his left ear - wrapped in barbed wire.

#6  I want to say first of all that we do have a lot of Moslem allies. OTOH, I am concerned that if our only enemies within the Islamic sphere were Al Qaeda, it is taking an awful lot of blood and treasure to defeat them.

#7  Also, if all it takes for someone to switch sides is some idiot in Florida burning a holy book... I'm kind of doubting they were a real ally to begin with.

#8  There seems to be a wobble in the New York intelligentsia's view of the victory mosque...very interesting. First I've seen.

"The mosque project near ground zero upholds a great American principle, but it’s not a sensible idea. Good sense is needed when a harvest of anger is in."

Let's hope this is the beginning of the end of the victory mosque.

#9  Also, to drive home my first point:

@ JihadWatch:

Egypt: Muslims burn Christian man alive, stab his father to death.

The people who rioted and performed those murders are probably _not_ Al Qaeda, per se. But neither are they our friends.

#10  "...the country's enemy is not Islam, but al-Qaida and extremist groups."

I personally believe that this assertion is wrong but apart from this it is also a significant deviation from the post 9/11 consensus articulated by Bush (probably preparation for surrender to peace with honor with the Taliban).

On 9/11/2001 Bush said: "We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them."

In his Statement to a Joint Session of Congress he said: "(The Talibam) will hand over the terrorists, or they will share in their fate."

So the enemy was terrorists and state sponsors who would not be permitted to hide behind implausible deniability. Bush symmetrized the asymmetrical war.

As for whether 'Islam' is an enemy:
The OIC (speaking for 'Islam' as a political actor), has rejected a policy of 'Peaceful Coexistence' (demand for Sharia restrictions for non-Muslims in the West). Instead the have officially adopted a 'Brezhnev Doctrine', declaring that in matters concerning Islam, Western nations enjoy only limited sovereignty.

So "Islam's" official diplomatic posture towards is objectively more hostile than that of the Soviet Union post 1956.

Draw your own conclusions.

#13  I liked SteveS's idea of reading selected verses from the Koran over a loudspeaker instead of burning the Koran.

I'd add, invite a Mohammedan to debate the verse just read, and instruct us on why it doesn't mean what it appears to say.

If no such person steps up, print the offending verse on a poster and burn the poster. Then, repeat the offer to debate the meaning.

#14  Putting the violent message of the Koran on display was what Geert Wilders did in 'Fitna'.

Pope Benedict offered scholarly criticism.

Dhimmis are not to voice any opinion re Islam. Period.

If they do it anyway there will be violence.

#3  I set aside any other feelings I may have about this, in the great relief that finally, America has another living Medal of Honor recipient.

Effectively, there is a two year limit after the event, for the issuance of the Medal of Honor, which may only be waived by act of congress. So outside of such congressional action, there will be no living recipients for the First or Second Gulf War.

A terrible tragedy for the brave men and women who fought heroically in those wars.

It would be a worthy cause to petition congressmen to reexamine unique acts of bravery for those wars, with an eye that America should benefit from having more living heroes among us.

#4  It will mean little or nothing if Zero salutes him or not. It will mean nothing if the press salutes him or not. When his commanders and fellow soldiers salute him it will mean everything. When Pres Bush meets with him and salutes him it will mean everything. Because a salute is an act of honor and respect, given from people of honor and respect to people of honor. Any salute from zero or the press will be hollow and empty of any honor, and not worthy.

Two get death penalty for killing Chinese in Sudan
[Gulf Times] A Sudanese court sentenced two men to death for killing four kidnapped Chinese oil workers and a Sudanese soldier during a botched rescue attempt by security services, their lawyer said. Armed Arab tribesmen took nine Chinese oil workers hostage in South Kordofan in 2008 demanding a share of crude revenues from the region and jobs for their people. Defence lawyer Abu Bakr said four of the hostages and the soldier were killed and three wounded in crossfire during the rescue raid by Sudanese troops, but that the Khartoum court found two of the tribesman guilty of murder in the deaths. They had denied having any part in the abduction.

Somali Stiffs Scored
[Iran Press] At least eight civilians and three troops have been killed during new clashes between African Union (AU) forces and al-Shabab fighters in Somalia's capital, Mogadishu.

The civilians have lost their lives after they were caught in cross-fire between AU troops and al-Shabab fighters in the north and south of the capital, a government security official said. Seven troops were also wounded in the gunfight.

A health official, meanwhile, said 36 civilians were injured as well.

Witnesses say the injured are still trapped inside their houses amid the clashes.

The new clashes broke out as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said on Tuesday that the fighting in Mogadishu has killed at least 230 civilians and displaced 23,000 people over the past two weeks.

Al-Shabab fighters claim that the government troops are losing territory in the capital as the area under the interim government's control has already shrunk to a few blocks.

Mogadishu airport comes under attack
[Al Jazeera] At least eight people have been killed in kabooms at the main airport in Mogadishu, the Somali capital, witnesses have said.

The victims in Thursday's blasts included African Union (AU) peacekeeping troops.

Witnesses said a boomer rammed a car into an AU peacekeepers post outside the airport and that they heard a second kaboom inside the compound shortly afterwards.

A front man with the African Union confirmed the car bomb attack.

Mohamed Abdi, a shopkeeper, told Rooters news agency: "I have seen four bleeding AU soldiers being carried at the gate. At least eight dead bodies, most of them Amisom soldiers were lying on the ground."

Two women begging in the street were also killed and one policeman was maimed, said Abdul Rahman Yussef, a Somali army official.

'Massive war'
Somalia's interim government warned on Wednesday that it expected a surge in violence as the Mohammedan holy month of Ramadan draws to a close.

The anti-government group al-Shabab in August declared a "massive, final" war against what it called "invaders", an apparent reference to the 6,000 African Union troops deployed in the country to support government forces.

Fighters attacked army barracks in several districts of Mogadishu following the announcement and dozens were killed.

Hundreds of new peacekeepers, mostly Ugandan, have arrived in recent weeks to help the government in its battle against al-Shabab.

The force has so far been able to do little more than guard the airport and port and shield Sharif Ahmed, the president.

Egypt finds nine more weapons caches in the Sinai
Egyptian security officials said they found machine guns, ammunition, over 170 anti-aircraft shells, 90 artillery shells, 200 bullets of varying sizes and anti-tank landmines. 100 kilograms of TNT were also discovered hidden in a Rafah cemetary.

In addition to the weapons caches, Egyptian security forces also discovered two tunnels in Rafah used for smuggling cars into Gaza.

Last week, a warehouse was reportedly found in Nakhel, in the Sinai, with 30 artillery shells and 20 anti-aircraft missiles. In addition, 80 anti-aircraft missiles were found in the side of a mountain, while 50 more such missiles and other weapons were found in Wadi Hurriya.

Mauritania president pardons Islamists
[Pak Daily Times] Mauritania's President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz has pardoned and freed from prison 15 convicted Islamist extremists to mark the end of Ramazan, the West African country's justice ministry said on Thursday.

A further 20 Islamist prisoners awaiting trial were also pardoned as a gesture to celebrate Eid. "This measure is in keeping with the spirit of tolerance which the President invoked at the start of the month of Ramazan," the justice minister said. Mauritania is one of several countries in the vast Sahel region in which al Qaeda's north African wing, known as AQIM, is known to operate.

3 Yemeni soldiers killed in militant attack
[Arab News] A Yemeni security official says gunmen have attacked a military checkpoint in south Yemen, killing three soldiers and wounding four others.

The official says the assault took place early Thursday in the town of Moudia, in Abyan province south of the capital Sanaa.

The official blamed the attack on Al-Qaeda militants, saying the raid appears to be the work of the same group that claimed responsibility for an attack last month in the nearby town of Lawder that left 11 soldiers dead.

[BANG! BANG! BANGETY BANG! KAPOW! KAZING!]
"[Gasp!] They got me, Mahmoud! [Rattle!]... [Twitch!]... Rosebud!"

The deceased was identified as Alimul Islam Ratan alias Titu, 38, Son of late Hesab Ali Mondol of Ramara in Bagmara.
"Aaaar! 'Tis a good thing Old Hesab Ali ain't around to see the bad end young Titu come to! He'd be rollin' over in his grave if he knew!"
Titu also known as Titas and Bikash was most haunted outlaw by all law enforcement agencies as he was made chief of the outfit following death of other top outlawed leaders including Dr Mizanur Rahman Tutul in 2008, a Rab press release said.
"Tutul is dead! Long live Titu!"
The leader used to command in areas including Rajshahi, Naogaon, Chapainawabganj, Natore, Pabna, Shirajganj and Khulna.
"Like a spider at the center of his far-flung web was young Titu!"
Upon information that Titu went to Bagmara for some organisational activities and distributing money among his followers on the occasion of Eid, a team of Rab followed him.
"Sergeant Rafiq! Gather the men! The game's afoot!"
As the Rab members challenged his group at a mango orchard at Tatipara,
"Youse there! Halt! Drop yer weapons and come out withcher hands up!"
they shot fire on the Rab personnel triggering the gunfight.
[BANG! BANG! BANGETY BANG!]
"Look out men! It's fire!"

After the gunfight the cohorts of Titu managed to flee away,
"Cheaply made sandals, don't fail us now!"
while the Rab members assisted by locals discovered Ratan lying on the ground with fatal wounds.
"There he is!"
"Here, you locals! See if he's still alive!"
"E-w-w-w-w-w-w! He's all bloody and stuff! Why can't you do it?"

As he was rushed to local hospital, the doctors declared him dead.
"He's dead, Jim!"
Out of 12 cases filed against him in Rajshahi, Naogaon and Natore, and nine other systems 10 are murder cases.
"He had the death sentence for each one!"
Ratan was convicted in Alo Khondoker Murder case while he was charge sheeted in some other cases, the press release said. Rab members recovered a 7.65mm pistol, a shutter gun, four bullets, sharp weapons and some PBCP leaflets from the spot.
"Sgt. Rafiq, I believe the shutter gun can return to its velvet-lined case!"
"Yessir!... Ouch!"
"Watch it! Those sharp weapons look... ummm..."
"Sharp?"

Mexico Using Israeli UAVs vs Narcoterrorists
Mexico has bought at least two Israeli Hermes 450 UAVs and over a dozen Skylark micro-UAVs. Mexico is using its new UAVs for anti-drug operations. Mexico ordered these aircraft two years ago, and kept it quiet.

Third Mexican mayor in month slain by hitmen
for a map, click here.
[Pak Daily Times] The third Mexican mayor in a month was slain by suspected drug gang men on the same day the US secretary of state raised hackles in Mexico by saying the country is "looking more and more like Colombia looked 20 years ago."

Hillary Rodham Clinton and other US officials pointed to Mexican drug cartels' use of three car bombs, a tool once favoured by cartel-allied rebels in Colombia, as evidence that the gangs "are now showing more and more indices of insurgency."

While the Mexican government quickly condemned the killing of the mayor of the northern town of El Naranjo, it rejected the comparison with Colombia, where the Medellin drug cartel waged a full frontal assault on the state, endangering its very integrity with attacks on police, politicians and judges and terror attacks against civilians.

More worrisome to Mexican legislators, Clinton suggested the United States was looking to implement some type of Plan Colombia for Mexico and Central America, referring to a US anti-drug program in which American special forces teams trained Colombian troops and US advisers are attached to Colombian military units. The reaction was swift.

Mexico — which has suffered at least three US invasions — has always rejected allowing American troops on its soil, except for a single symbolic presence: Mexico's Senate has authorised a US detachment to march in next week's Bicentennial parade.

"Starting right now, we have to say this clearly. We are not going to permit any version of a Plan Colombia," said Sen Santiago Creel, a member of President Felipe Calderon's National Action Party. "We cannot permit a Plan Colombia in Mexico."

Sen Ricardo Monreal of the leftist Labor Party said US aid to Colombia hadn't stopped drug trafficking there. "Whoever thinks Colombia is a cure-all, and if the United States thinks it is necessary to apply the same model to us they applied to Colombia, they are mistaken," he said.

Plan Colombia has been widely credited for helping Colombia diminish the rebel threat, but critics say it has not put a significant dent in the drug trade. Clinton made her statements Wednesday in Washington at the Council on Foreign Relations, where she said drug cartels are "morphing into, or making common cause with, what we would consider an insurgency in Mexico and in Central America." Clinton also suggested that "we need to figure out what are the equivalents" for Mexico and Central America of Plan Colombia, acknowledging "there were problems and there were mistakes, but it worked."

Mexican cartels are becoming increasingly violent — federal police reported Wednesday they had found four bodies in a clandestine grave linked to arrested US-born drug hitman Edgar Valdez Villarreal, alias "La Barbie" — and are carrying out more attacks on government officials in Mexico.

Hooded gunmen burst into Mayor Alexander Lopez Garcia's office in the northern Mexico state of San Luis Potosi on Wednesday and shot him to death. President Felipe Calderon's office issued a statement condemning the killing — the third mayor slain in less than a month — calling it a "cowardly and criminal" act.

There was no immediate information on the motive in the attack, but the style of the slaying resembles methods used by Mexico's drug cartels.

  • Mexican Federal agents arrested three unidentified armed suspects in a Juarez, Chihuahua shopping mall Wednesday evening, according to Mexican news reports. The arrests were made in the Rio Grande Mall near the intersection of calles Adolfo de la Huerta and Paseo Triunfo de la Republica. Reports are federal police pursued the suspects in the mall parking lot who were aboard a BMW sedan but apparently had dismounted in an attempt to elude detection on Paseo Triunfo de la República. Inside the car were found several rifles.

  • Two unidentified men were found early Thursday morning an area usually used by organized crime to dump their victims, according to Mexican news reports. The find was made in a vacant lot near the intersection of Vicente Guerrero and Bermudez where the victims were found nude with plastic bags tied around their heads, and messages on their person. One message read "For selling heroin to children", while the other read "For working with the old". In a related development, a message was scrawled on a wall near a nursery near the intersection of calles Children Heroes and Panama which warned for the return of a kidnap child, or else. Reports do not say who has been kidnapped.

  • An unidentified man as found tortured and killed west of Juarez Thursday morning, say Mexican news accounts. The find was made on El Camino Real and calle Feldespato at about 0800 hrs.

  • A Juarez businessman was shot to death and his wife was abducted Thursday morning in Juarez, according to Mexican news accounts. The crime took place at a truck trailer lot near the intersection of calles Sierra Madre Oriental and Parral in the Lomas San José district where the owner, Antonio Marrufo, 45, was shot to death by armed suspects while his wife was kidnapped.

  • An apparent kidnapping attempt was thwarted by an alert woman in her 60s who shot one armed suspect to death and wounded another. The abduction attempt took place at a residence on calle Ramirez Calderon, where the woman upon seeing the two suspects walk into the house, pulled a .32 revolver and fired at them repeatedly, killing one suspect and wounding the other. The surviving suspect fled the area and was later caught with a 9mm pistol by Juarez police units. The woman's husband, the presumed intended abduction victim, was hit in the shooting as well.

  • A young man was shot to death at an auto parts store in Juarez Thursday morning, say Mexican news accounts. Oscar Omar Trejo Muñoz, 19, was shot in front of the Autozone parts store near the intersection of Bulevar Zaragoza and calle Valle del Cedro by the Babicora police station. The victim was shot while in his Ford Taurus.

  • A mechanic was shot to death in Juarez Thursday afternoon, say Mexican news accounts. The shooting took place near the intersection of calles José Rosas Moreno and Artemio de Valle Arizpe in the Infonavit Casas Grandes district where Jaime Paulio, 41, was shot by armed suspects who were aboard a sedan. The suspects fired on the victim at least 23 times with 9mm weapons. The victim's four year old son was accompanying him, but the child was not harmed in the shooting.

  • An unidentified woman in her 30s, abducted from a truck trailer lot in Juarez earlier in the day, was found shot to death in Juarez, according to Mexican press accounts. The victim was found in the street near the intersection of calles Ramon Alcazar and Miguel Auza in the Constitucion district.

  • Two dead and two wounded are the balance of a shooting and a pursuit in Hermosillo, Sonora Thursday morning, according to Mexican press reports. An unidentified victim was shot to death near the intersection of calles Gamboa and Arboleya in the Urbi Villas del Rey district in the southern sector of the city by armed suspects initially reported riding aboard a Jeep SUV. Following the shooting, responding municipal police located the suspects on bulevar De los Ganaderos near the Abelardo L. Rodríguez. Rodriguez dam spillway. Joined by agents of the Sonora Policia Estatal Investigadora (PEI), a gun battle took place where one unidentified suspect was killed and the other was wounded. One of the state police agents were wounded in the battle. Armed suspects in two other Jeep SUVs were involved in the assassination, however only one, a Jeep Cherokee, was found later in the day abandoned.

  • The headless body of a victim was found in an area west of Mexicali, Baja California, say Mexican news reports. The discovery was made in the Sauzal district. The victim's head was found the day before in a parcel.

Bomb blast wounds 12 outside Colombia spy agency
[Geo TV] Twelve people were maimed Wednesday when a bomb exploded outside the Colombian intelligence agency's offices in the southern city of Pasto, near the Ecuadoran border, the Red Thingy said.

A "low-intensity package bomb was left outside the Administrative Department of Security (DAS) building, next to a lamppost, by a man who then ran away," Pasto Red Thingy official Henry Palacios told media.

He said 12 passersby and workers from the DAS building were maimed in the blast and taken to area hospitals.

Narino department Governor Antonio Navarro told Caracol radio that two of the maimed were at death's door and that the damage wrought by the bomb was considerable.

He said authorities suspect the bombing was the work of the leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), the country's oldest and strongest rebel group.

Shortly after the blast, DAS agents detained a man and a woman who were leaving the area in a taxi and are suspected of being behind the blast, DAS Director Felipe Munoz said.

'State of emergency' in Azerbaijani city
[Iran Press] Azerbaijan has declared a "state of emergency" in the southern city of Lankaran, after several religious figures were arrested in the city, reports say.

The move comes after Azeri forces arrested a leading Shia cleric and a number of prominent religious figures during the ceremonies of the Night of Qadr from holy month of Ramadan, which coincided with September 3 this year.

The people have held several demonstrations and clashed with police across the region since then.

Azerbaijani government has banned religious ceremonies and even launched a crackdown on Quds Day ralliers.

Several people were arrested during the Quds Day rally on Friday, when the demonstrators gathered in front of the Israeli Embassy in Baku and called for its closure.

The demonstrators also called on Baku to sever all political and economic ties with Israel.

#1  N. Ossetia finally ran a bell. Russia created that little cesspool all on its own. It's a primary smuggling area. I wonder if they used the 122mm shell parts for the blast, which Russia gave N.O. to help push the Ossetia war so the could gain more control of the north region.

Russia did not create the situation itself like US in Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq.

Since 89 jihadist supported by western intelligence and there Mid East vassal states have been coming into the region and with the compliance with the regime in Chechnya harboured organised crime groups in Russia and international terrorists who started a genocide against the ethnic Russian population of mass rapes, kidnapping, murder and ethnic cleansing which inevitably lead t Russian intervention and the first Chechen war.

Today supported by Soros puppet state in Georgia and other states jihadists are launching terrorist attacks to continue to destabilise Russia.

If you had a clue you would know the main smuggling are is the Panski Gorge which is in Georgia.

FL church withdraws plan to burn Quran
[Iran Press] Pastor Terry Jones has decided to cancel his plan to burn the holy Quran at his Florida-based church, a plan which had drawn fierce international criticism.

Jones of the Dove World Outreach Center church announced on Thursday that "we have agreed to cancel our event on Saturday," ABC reported.

Upon announcement the blasphemous plan to burn the holy Quran drew domestic and international condemnation.
It's only blasphemy if believers do it, my dear IranPress reporter. When unbelievers do it... it's something else.
US President Barack Obama had earlier urged Jones to withdraw from his plan, saying, "I just want him to understand that this stunt that he is talking about pulling could greatly endanger our young men and women who are in uniform."

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton condemned the plan, describing it as "disrespectful and disgraceful."

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki blamed the plan on the failure of US policies to protect the basic rights of American Muslims.
Yes, but he's stupid.
The Vatican's Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue labeled the scheme as a "deplorable act of violence."

A spokeswoman for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said on Wednesday that "we strongly condemn any kind of attempt of this kind."

The United Nations Secretary General Bank Ki-moon slammed the plan saying, "Such actions cannot be condoned by any religion."

Afghanistan, India, Indonesia, Kuwait, Pakistan, the Organization of the Islamic Conference and the NATO have also condemned the plan.

Meanwhile, Jonse said on Thursday that his decision came after he reaches a deal with Imam Abdel Rauf, the leader of the proposed Ground Zero Islamic cultural center and mosque, to mover the facility. "He has agreed to move it," Jones said referring to the Ground Zero Islamic cultural center and mosque.
It seems that Florida imam, a man of God in his religion, lied in front of witnesses. No doubt he thought that was clever at the time.
However, SoHo Properties, the developer of the community center that is being called the Ground Zero Mosque, denied the report. "The Muslim Community Center called Park51 in Lower Manhattan is not being moved," SoHo Properties said in a statement, adding that "the project will proceed as planned."

#4  Never waste a good crisis:

Well, let us examine this Jones thing for a moment. If we can link the Quran burning to middle America "Hate Speech" or the "Tea Party" crowd... that would be a real plus. Or, if we could possibly link the idea of burning Qurans by a US Christian Church to escalating US casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan.... WOW! Patreus is on board. Hillary and the UN are on board. We've even got a statement from NATO and the POPE! One highly publicized call to the Pastor Jones from Secretary Gates should do the trick.

Five killed in suicide attack at minister's house in Quetta
[Pak Daily Times] Balochistan Finance Minister Mir Asim Kurd had a narrow escape on Thursday when a suicide bomber detonated himself inside the minister's residence in Quetta, killing five people and injuring four others.

The blast occurred moments after Kurd, the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid's (PML-Q) parliamentary leader in the Balochistan Assembly, left for his office, located in the Civil Secretariat.

According to eyewitnesses, the blast occurred after the main gate of the house was opened to allow a water tanker to enter the compound. The blast completely destroyed a vehicle parked inside the house as well as caused considerable damage to the house.

Two security guards, Abdul Salam and Gul Zaman, and a domestic employee, Takri Muhammad Usman, were killed on the spot. Five of the injured were taken to the provincial Sandeman Hospital, where two of them succumbed to their injures late on Thursday.

Initially, police termed the blast a result of explosives planted inside the car, parked inside the house.

However, Bomb Disposal Squad personnel said that it was a suicide attack.

"It was definitely a suicide blast and we have collected evidence and sent the reports to the provincial government. Over 15 kilogrammes of explosive material was used in the blast," an official of the Bomb Disposal Squad told reporters after the incident.

Provincial Minister Communication and Works Mir Sadiq Umrani also confirmed that it was a suicide attack, saying it could be the reaction of the statement issued by Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Wednesday.

"I was on my way to office when someone informed me about blast," said Kurd, adding that he had not received any threat from any organisation. "I am an inhabitant of Balochistan. I cannot be scared by blasts," he said.

So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

A young man, Talha, 21, committed suicide by shooting himself in the head at his Ittehad Town house on Thursday, the Mochko police said.

Talha's family took him to the Civil Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead, they added.

In another incident, two people died of suffocation in Liaquatabad, the Super Market police said.

The incident took place in a Khalid Cloth Market shop where both the victims had been working for a while, they added.

After completing their work in the wee hours, they stayed in the shop, however, when the shop was opened, they were found dead, they said. A medico-legal officer confirmed that Ismail and Afzal had died of suffocation.

Separately, two people were killed when a truck collided with a rickshaw in Yaseenabad, the Jauharabad police said.

SHO Rizwan Patel said the deceased had been identified as Sirajuddin Jamreen Khan, rickshaw driver, and Muhammad Umair Akram, the passenger, the SHO said. The truck driver fled from the scene while his truck had been impounded by police, he added.

In another accident, a teenage girl was killed and another injured by a speeding vehicle in Machhar Colony, the Docks police said. SHO Sohail Akhter said Shahnaz Meezan, 17, and her friend Najma Babu Lal, 16, were on their way to a nearby market when an unidentified vehicle hit and severely injured them. The victims were taken to the Civil Hospital where doctors pronounced Meezan dead, the SHO said.

In a third accident, a teenage boy was killed by a speeding vehicle near the Peoples Football Stadium in Lyari Town, the Mauripur police said. The deceased, identified as Younus, 16, was crossing the road when an unidentified vehicle hit and killed him, the police said.

Meanwhile, a labourer was crushed to death when a wall collapsed on him in an under-construction house in Sector L-1 of Surjani Town, the police said.

In another incident, a teenager was electrocuted near Al-Asif Square, the Sohrab Goth police said. The area residents said Habib and his friend Akber were sleeping on the roof of a bus when an electric wire fell near the bus injuring them seriously. They were taken to hospital where Habib was pronounced dead.

#1  Presumably yet another attempt to ignite Shia-Sunni civil war. Hard to guess if the bomber was al Qaeda or Iran - and even if I knew the sect of the imam, there are enough 'false flag' killings I still wouldn't be confident.

Iraq: Al-Qaeda Extorting Businesses in Mosul
[Asharq al-Aswat] The Governor of the Ninawa has stated that armed groups linked to Al-Qaeda are extorting money from a number of local shop owners and traders.
Terrorists: mere gangsters dressed up in religious garb.
In a statement to Asharq Al-Awsat, Governor Athil al-Najafi, who believes these activities are due to armed groups losing a large part of their funding sources, emphasized that civilians' fear of being targeted makes them respond to this blackmail. He made it clear that the Iraqi security forces are fully in control of the city, and asked civilians to report such cases, which he described as few and limited, and hardly a 'phenomenon' in Mosul. He indicated that the intelligence possessed by the security services will enable them to arrest those engaging in such acts.

But the reality is contrary to the Governor's remarks, as despite the falling levels of violence and attacks in Mosul and Nineveh province, and a reduction in arms smuggling across the border with Syria, threats and pressures are still the dominant 'currency' in the region, according to a report by the Agence France Press (AFP). Abdullah Ahmed Ali (44 years old) spoke on this subject: "Everyone pays and no one says no, or delays in his payments, because they [Al-Qaeda] would confiscate his car,

Abdullah Ahmed Ali, who owns a roadside rest stop, added "the Islamic State of Iraq [collective term for several Iraqi insurgent groups] imposes a fine on vehicles carrying food products coming from Syria, or Baghdad, up to the value of 200 dollars. There is a 150 dollar tax for [large] trucks traveling along this road, 100 dollars for a medium sized truck and 50 dollars for a small one". He went on to say "Those who dare not pay would suffer a fate similar to that of Abu Mohammad, a merchant in the 'Algeria' district, who was killed, and his son was injured, when he refused to pay the State", in reference to the 'Islamic State of Iraq'. He added with sorrow, "Where are our security forces? If we had a security apparatus and strong intelligence to confront this problem (...) but even the elements protecting the security leaders are subject to the mercy of 'Al-Qaeda'".

Similar accounts can be found in abundance in Mosul, which was once an important centre for commerce throughout ancient times. A university professor in political science, who preferred to remain anonymous, said "Mosul has witnessed the birth of a new 'mafia', similar to those found in Italy, but with significant religious overtones". He added "if we count the money collected by 'Al-Qaeda' each day, we would recognize that it can support its fighting not only in Mosul, but in all of Iraq, and maybe help towards its activities in Afghanistan and Yemen". He pointed out that "security officials are fully aware of this, and they have a responsibility as guardians not to cooperate with these rogue 'security services', but the truth lies in the absence of a security apparatus, and intelligence".

For his part, U.S. Army Captain Kenneth Benoit, who runs joint patrols with Iraqi security forces and Kurdish Peshmerga in Nineveh province, said "Al-Qaeda is engaging in extortion practices, due to the suspension of its smuggling business, relating to weapons and explosives". The Iraqi police also stressed this point. Col. Hamid Abdullah al-Mulahaq, of the Joint Forces, whose headquarters are based in Marez, southern Mosul, said "either they collect fines by force, or they receive financial assistance from abroad, to carry out attacks".

4 Iraqis Escape from U.S. Custody in Baghdad Prison
[An Nahar] Four prisoners with links to al-Qaida have beat feet from the U.S.-controlled part of a maximum-security prison in Storied Baghdad, U.S. and Iraqi officials said Thursday.

The breakout from Karkh Prison, formerly called Camp Cropper, is an embarrassment for the U.S. military, which has handed over control of all of the detention facilities it used to run to the Iraqi government. But at the request of the Iraqis, the U.S. has retained custody over some of the most dangerous prisoners, including those with ties to terrorist groups or Saddam Hussein's former regime.

An Iraqi military front man, Maj. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi, told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named that the Americans informed them Thursday morning that four Iraqis being held by the U.S. had broken out of the prison, although it was not clear exactly when or how they beat feet.

He said the men were linked to al-Qaida and facing the death penalty.

An American military front man, Col. Barry Johnson, confirmed there was an escape, but provided no details.

"We are working with Iraqi Security Forces to resolve this," he said. "Our first priority is recapturing the individuals involved."

An Iraqi official said security forces had cordoned off the area -- including the Jihad neighborhood and the airport, which is part of a large compound that also includes the prison -- as part of the search for the runaways. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Jihad residents said there was an intense Iraqi military presence in the neighborhood, and that locals were banned from driving in the area.

On July 15, the U.S. military handed over about 1,500 prisoners to Iraqi authorities during the changing of the guard at Camp Cropper, but continued to hold onto some 200 detainees at the request of the Iraqi government. They are kept in a separate part of the prison dubbed Compound 5, and guarded by American soldiers.

Maj. Gen. Jerry Cannon, who is in charge of U.S. detainee centers in Iraq, previously described those prisoners who remain in U.S custody as "former regime elements, al-Qaida operatives and very dangerous detainees." He said they would eventually be handed over to the Iraqi government before American forces pull out of the country entirely by the end of next year.

Thursday's escape is the second since the U.S. transferred custody of the detention facility to the Iraqis.

Just a week after the handover, four al-Qaida-linked detainees awaiting trial on terrorism charges beat feet from the Iraqi section of the prison.

The $48-million complex has been used by U.S. forces since April 2003 and can hold up to 4,000 prisoners. It's now divided into six detainee compounds, and is manned by 700 Iraqi corrections officers and about 100 support staff.

The prison once held Saddam Hussein and other senior members of his regime.

Israeli jets bomb Gaza as tanks line up
[Iran Press] Israeli warplanes have bombed many targets in the besieged Gaza Strip, damaging several buildings and injuring two Palestinians.

Sixteen Israeli warplanes have attacked the coastal strip a few hours before midnight on Thursday, firing at least one rocket into a security compound west of Gaza City, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Two other rockets were fired south of Gaza in the town of Rafah injuring two Palestinians. Another rocket was also fired east of Gaza city, he said.

Witnesses say they have spotter Israeli tanks along the Gaza border but there is no further detail available, the Press TV correspondent reported.

Israeli officials have confirmed that a military operation has taken place in the coastal strip, without giving any further details.

The incident happened when the streets of Gaza were packed with people preparing for celebrations of Eid al-Fitr on Friday to mark the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran to release one of three US nationals
[Iran Press] Coinciding with Eid al-Fitr, Tehran will release one of the three Americans detained in the southwestern Iran over illegally entering the country.

"Given that Eid al-Fitr is upon us, it was decided that this lady (Sarah Emily Shourd) be released soon to rejoin with her family," Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast told Press TV early on Friday.

The spokesman added that the decision to release Shourd came after Iranian officials, including President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, closely studied the case.

He did not give further details as to when and where the American national will be released, saying that "discussions are still ongoing regarding the details and the date of her release."

Mehmanparast cited "Islamic compassion" and the Iranian government's "special regard for women" as two of the reasons behind her release.

Sarah Emily Shourd, 31, Shane Michael Bauer and Joshua Felix Fattal both 27, were arrested on Iranian soil in July 2009 after illegally crossing the border from the Kurdish mountains of northern Iraq.

They were later charged with espionage after Tehran Prosecutor Abbas Jafari-Dolatabadi found "compelling evidence" that the three US citizens had been cooperating with US intelligence agencies.

In late August the Iranian Intelligence Minister Heidar Moslehi announced that the investigation into the case of these three individuals was close to completion and that Tehran would announce the results when it is completed.

Eid al-Fitr is celebrated on the first day of the lunar month of Shawwal, when Muslims gather to perform the Eid prayer and bring 30 days of fasting in Ramadan to an end.
