DTV Transition Failure Leads Man to Shoot TV
A man angry about the shut-off of his cable-television service and subsequent inability to convert his analog TV to pick up DTV signals shot his television set Wednesday afternoon, scaring his wife out of the house and holding off a SWAT team in a two-hour standoff.

Police Chief Carl Francis told the Joplin Globe newspaper that the wife of Walter Hoover, 70, walked a couple blocks to a police station and reported that her husband had been drinking, was angry with a shut-off of his cable service, and had gotten his guns out.

"He actually fired two rounds before she left the residence," Francis told the Joplin Globe.

The television set was struck by two shots. He said he did not know why the couple's cable service had been shut off.

When police showed up, Hoover was seen at the front door with a handgun, flanked by American and Confederate flags hanging from poles by the doorway, the newspaper reported. He then went back inside and returned with a high-powered hunting rifle, prompting a large response from surrounding police agencies. Hoover surrendered later without any more shots fired.

Hoover was arrested on a felony count of unlawful use of a weapon.

Slain Orchard Park woman was stabbed before beheading
Aasiya Z. Hassan was stabbed several times before being beheaded Feb. 12, and authorities still aren't sure whether she was alive when she was decapitated. Sources close to the case also have confirmed that Hassan was attacked with hunting knives.

"The certificate of death is going to say stab wounds and decapitation," one law-enforcement source familiar with the case told The Buffalo News.

Orchard Park police have charged her husband, Muzzammil S. Hassan, 44, with second-degree murder in the killing.

Officials investigating the case say that Muzzammil Hassan is not a hunter. It's not clear how authorities believe he obtained the knives.
"So where'd the knives come from Muldoon?"
"Dunno, Sarge, dunno."

Authorities have been tight-lipped about the details of the case, refusing to discuss exactly how the 37-year-old Aasiya Hassan was assaulted, the weapons used and the cause of death. "There's still an ongoing investigation about whether she was alive or dead when her head was cut off," the source added.

Muzzammi l Hassan went to Orchard Park Police Headquarters that evening to report that his wife was dead at their business office, a Muslim television station on Thorn Avenue. However, his defense attorney, James P. Harrington, has said his client did not confess to killing her.
"I want to tell you that my wife is dead."
"I'm sorry to hear that sir, what happened?"
"Her head was cut off."
"Good heavens? Who did that?"
"Wudn't me."

Prosecutors have explained that despite the gruesomeness of the attack, first-degree murder could not be charged, because the facts of the case don't meet the requirements of that charge under New York State law. First-degree murder, which can lead to a maximum sentence of life without parole, may be charged only in 13 specific types of intentional killings, including the deaths of a judge, corrections officer, police officer or witness, or in torture, contract, terrorist or serial killings.
Beheading isn't torture?
Muzzammil Hassan's case is expected to go before an Erie County grand jury soon.

#1  1. This could be called a terrorist killing since she was beaten for years before being stabbed and then murdered and thus they could go with a 1st degree charge if they really wanted to.

2. Murder 2 in NYS has a max of 25yrs to life, so this fellow might be paroled in 25.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Bush Goes to Hardware Store that Offered Him a Job
DALLAS -- Former President George W. Bush stopped in to shop at a Dallas hardware store that made him a lighthearted offer earlier this month to work as a greeter. Andrea Bond, a manager at Elliott's Hardware, says Bush walked into the store on Saturday and quipped: "I'm looking for a job."

She said he spent about an hour shopping and talking to customers during the surprise visit. He bought a few flashlights, batteries and a can of WD-40. He also bought some night-lights. Laura Bush didn't accompany the former president, but Bond said Bush said his wife had sent him on the trip.

The Bushes moved into their new home in the Preston Hollow area of Dallas on Friday.

Elliott's, a local hardware store founded in 1947, published an open letter earlier this month to Bush, inviting him to apply for a store greeter position. The tongue-in-cheek appeal appeared in The Dallas Morning News and its commuter-oriented sister publication, Quick.

Europe
Hamburg police plan to ban punks from city
Hamburg's police force has drawn up highly controversial plans to clear the city centre of homeless people, punks and drinkers during shopping hours. An internal memo on the topic has been obtained by the Hamburger Morgenpost, and suggests a ban of such socially marginalised groups to ensure 'security and cleanliness' in the shopping area.

It would not matter whether these 'persons from the marginal scenes' had done anything illegal, according to the paper. Groups of two or more such people would be enough for a temporary ban from the area until the shops close.

The paper quotes from the memo which says, "It is not acceptable that benches or areas... are claimed and thus are no longer available for the general public."

It suggests that if two men who look like punks meet up in public, sit on a bench and drink a beer, they could be stopped and thrown out of the inner city until the end of the shopping day. Apparently not only uniformed, but also plain-clothed police officers would be used in such operations.

Police spokesman Ralf Meyer told the paper, "It is not an offensive against individual homeless people."

He said the idea was designed to take on a group of up to 50 punks and Goths who gather on the famously snooty Rathausmarkt and Jungfernstieg in the city centre, making a mess, breaking bottles and allowing their dogs to run around. "We know from our experience that we do not need to wait until they really do anything. We will intervene if individuals from this group sit themselves down there." He said this had been checked by lawyers.

But the proposal is unlikely to stand, the paper reported, pointing out numerous previous attempts to ban drinking in public, or begging in the city centre. Sebastian Scheerer, head of the Institute for Criminological Social Research at the city's university, said the plans constituted an, "obviously illegal criminalisation of certain milieus."

Four lynched in Loni, Ghaziabad
NEW DELHI: Four unidentified men were beaten to death by public on Sunday night, while attempting to break into a house in Loni, Ghaziabad.

Six persons, loaded with steel rods, a 9mm pistol and some live cartridges, broke into the house of Rakesh Bhardwaj at C-38/2, Balram Nagar at around 7pm on Sunday. The family was away at that time.

Rakesh’s brother Ramesh Bhardwaj, a principal at a local government school, who lives nearby, found the six men inside the house as he peeped through the window.

On spotting them, he raised a cry. A crowd assembled there in no time.

While two managed to escape from the spot, the four others started firing at the crowd. Soon, the crowd surrounded them and beat them to death.

Speaking to TOI, the police said two-three persons from the crowd were also injured in the incident.

Issue fatwa saying India a friend of Islam, VHP tells Muslims
Concerned by "religion inspired violence", the Vishwa Hindu Parishad has shot off a letter to 13 Muslim organisations requesting them to issue a fatwa declaring India as a friend of Islam, 'Dar-Ul-Amen', against which 'jihad' should not be waged.

VHP's Dharm Raksha Manch, a congregation of seers which issued the letter, has asked Ulemas to state clearly that Hindus are not `kafirs' and therefore `jihad' does not apply to the community. The letter cites examples from the emails released by the terrorist group `Indian Mujahideen' citing religious dictum justifying the terror attacks on Ahmedabad and Delhi. Asking Muslim scholars to clear such misconceptions, the letter said they should "issue a fatwa declaring that India is not Dar-Ul-Haram i.e. a country against which Muslims must launch a religious war, rather India is Dar-Ul-Amen, a land of peace where all Muslims can practice and propagate their religion uninterrupted."

Addressed to Muslim intellectuals, leaders and Ulemas the letter states "The Dharm Raksha Manch is particularly concerned that Islamic scriptures have served as the inspiration behind these attacks, and concerned that the same might occur again in the future".

Hey, this idea is a lot more constructive than deliberately tarnishing the image of your own country by misrepresenting its record on Al Arabiya TV, for example.

Science & Technology
Major Brian Shul: "I loved that jet."
This piece by Major Shul came in over the transom:

In April 1986, following an attack on American soldiers in a Berlin disco, President Reagan ordered the bombing of Muammar Qaddafi's terrorist camps in Libya. My duty was to fly over Libya and take photos recording the damage our F-111's had inflicted. Qaddafi had established a 'line of death,' a territorial marking across the Gulf of Sidra, swearing to shoot down any intruder that crossed the boundary. On the morning of April 15, I rocketed past the line at 2,125 mph.

I was piloting the SR-71 spy plane, the world's fastest jet, accompanied by Maj Walter Watson, the aircraft's reconnaissance systems officer (RSO). We had crossed into Libya and were approaching our final turn over the bleak desert landscape when Walter informed me that he was receiving missile launch signals. I quickly increased our speed, calculating the time it would take for the weapons-most likely SA-2 and SA-4 surface-to-air missiles capable of Mach 5 - to reach our altitude. I estimated that we could beat the rocket-powered missiles to the turn and stayed our course, betting our lives on the plane's performance.

After several agonizingly long seconds, we made the turn and blasted toward the Mediterranean. 'You might want to pull it back,' Walter suggested. It was then that I noticed I still had the throttles full forward. The plane was flying a mile every 1.6 seconds, well above our Mach 3.2 limit. It was the fastest we would ever fly. I pulled the throttles to idle just south of Sicily, but we still overran the refueling tanker awaiting us over Gibraltar.

Scores of significant aircraft have been produced in the 100 years of flight, following the achievements of the Wright brothers, which we celebrate in December. Aircraft such as the Boeing 707, the F-86 Sabre Jet, and the P-51 Mustang are among the important machines that have flown our skies. But the SR-71, also known as the Blackbird, stands alone as a significant contributor to Cold War victory and as the fastest plane ever-and only 93 Air Force pilots ever steered the 'sled,' as we called our aircraft.

As inconceivable as it may sound, I once discarded the plane. Literally. My first encounter with the SR-71 came when I was 10 years old in the form of molded black plastic in a Revell kit. Cementing together the long fuselage parts proved tricky, and my finished product looked less than menacing. Glue, oozing from the seams, discolored the black plastic. It seemed ungainly alongside the fighter planes in my collection, and I threw it away.

Balance HERE and at the source link.

#2  Glue, oozing from the seams, discolored the black plastic. It seemed ungainly alongside the fighter planes in my collection, and I threw it away.

The SR-71 is designed so that it leaks fuel when cold. The seals tighten up when it gets up to speed and the airframe heats up.

#3  I saw Shul give this talk a few years ago. He's a great story teller and an accomplished aviation photographer--he started his 2nd career taking photos during SR-71 flights. He's also a bad ass who came back from what should have been a fatal crash in Vietnam and continued flying.

Arrest Near in Chandra Levy Case
(CBS) Authorities in Washington, D.C. may be close to an arrest in the murder of former government intern Chandra Levy, a case that made headlines, and brought down a congressman eight years ago.

There are reports that D.C. police have submitted evidence to the U.S. Attorney's Office in an effort to get an arrest warrant for a man identified as Ingmar Guandique.

He's behind bars, convicted of assaulting two women jogging in Washington's Rock Creek Park.

Mr. Guandique is apparently an illegal immigrant but that phrase isn't in the CBS article. Also he has been in prison since the summer of 2001 serving a 10 year sentence
