#4  Last week, California reported a large drop in applications, pushing down the overall figure to the lowest since February 2008. This week, it reported a significant increase as it processed applications delayed from the previous week. A department spokesman says the seasonally adjusted numbers "are being distorted ... by an issue of timing."

96-year-old dad could be world's oldest

A 96-year-old dad claims that he is the world's oldest father, according to an October 17 report from ABC News. The farmer from India believes he is the world's oldest dad for the second time.

The 96-year-old dad is Ramjit Raghav. He and his wife, Shakuntala Devi, who is 52, live in Haryana. Their youngest child is named Ranjeet, and he was born on October 5. Can you believe that this elderly man and this woman were able to have a child at their advanced ages? Two years ago, the couple had another baby together, so this is the second time they've been able to have a baby.

Ramjit Raghav said, "I didn't take any performance enhancers … I just prayed to go to complete my family, either a boy or a girl. . . With God's grace, our wish has been fulfilled."

It looks like the man got his prayers answered. Do you think he'll have more children? Could he end up being a dad at 100 or older? That would be astonishing.

The 96-year-old dad credits his long life to the fact that he's lived a healthy lifestyle. He is a vegetarian, and he does not drink

#2  Given the very poor state of record keeping in Rural Indian villages:

1. It is highly unlikely that he is really 96.
2. It highly unlikely that the mother is actually 52.
3. It is quite likely that neither really know how old they really are.

I've employed dozens of illiterate villagers at my residence in India over the years and NONE of them have been able provide a birth record, nor do they know with any certainty how old they are.

German Woman Fails to Prove Atom-Smasher Will End World
[An Nahar] A German woman who feared the Earth would be sucked into oblivion in a black hole failed Tuesday in her court bid to stop the work of the world's most powerful atom smasher.

The higher administrative court in Muenster, western Germany, rejected her claims, ruling there was no evidence the work of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) posed a danger to public safety.

"The plaintiff ... was worried that the experiments could produce so-called 'black holes' which could eventually lead to the destruction of all life on Earth," the court said.

However,
those who apply themselves too closely to little things often become incapable of great things...
the court noted that the CERN's own safety reports ruled out any danger to life. "Objectively, there is no evidence to doubt the correctness of these safety reports nor was any conclusive evidence presented," it ruled.

The woman had failed in a previous attempt to stop the work of CERN in Switzerland
...home of the Helvetians, famous for cheese, watches, yodeling, and William Tell...
at the Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe.

Other opponents have also sought to stop the experiments, fearing either a black hole whose super gravity would swallow the Earth or a theoretical particle called a strangelet that would in turn liquidize the planet.

#5  As I understand it, the teeny, tiny size of singularity they'd be able to create would leak more energy than it could absorb, so they'd disappear pretty much immediately.

You need the mass of a star to get it to last long enough to be self-sustaining.
Posted by: Rob Crawford || 10/18/2012 9:43 Comments || Top||

#6  This does, however, beg the question of what is physics these days?

The physicists keep throwing out statements in public which when taken together are at best self-contradictory and at worst just wacko.

I personally think that the problem is primarily "a failure to communicate" with the public because all they can really use to communicate is math of a truly bizzare nature that the public, no matter how smart, can't begin to follow. So, they are forced to use metaphors and analogies. When you see them "communicating" with each other through books or TV they don't seem to communicate with each other all that well either.

The metaphors and analogies don't hold up across those multiple announcements. A particularly simple example is the infamous E = mc2. If that simple math truly held up then you could also say that m = E/c2 where energy has mass (granted very little) but according to physicists photons (energy) have 0 mass so either photons do have mass or the equation isn't quite right.

The simplistic explanation falls apart as do all of the extrapolations from statements about dark matter & energy, neutrinos, string theory, light, etc. Is anti-matter dark matter or is there an anti-dark-matter too?

Personally, all of this boils down to my reason behind my agnosticism. Until the brainiacs work this all out I'll hold out for the chance that a god can exist. If they work it out than we can revisit the issue.

#8  Skid, given my disdain for organized religion (if God wants to let me in on something he can contact me directly) which is based on my cynical attitude towards my fellow man, one might expect me to be an atheist. However, I don't have anymore respect for those opinions / dogmas as proposed by anti-believers.

There are too many questions that science can't answer now to be categorical.

Was watching a show on varying theories of universe creation the other night; big bang, big bounce, bubbles from black holes etc. and all I could hear was "And God said, Let there be Light!" at appropriate times in the narrative.

#9  " have 0 mass"

No photons have zero REST mass. e = HF
so hf=mc^2
i.e high frequency = high energy. The zero rest mass implies a zero frequency photon ( rather impossible but there for the math to work).
Posted by: Bright Pebbles || 10/18/2012 19:31 Comments || Top||

#10  Photons are never at rest, they travel at speed of light c. Their rest mass is zero. E = mc^2 only holds in the rest frame; the general relation includes a spatial momentum component p in the energy/momentum four-vector.

The energy of the photon is actually E = pc. As Bright Pebbles said, you can equate that to E = h times frequency to get the frequency (and color) of the photon.

Another Art Heist
What ... another one? Clooney and Pitt still on the loose?? Dammit men ... check all the tuxedo rentals. Thay can't get far!!!
An art theft in Rotterdam has baffled Dutch detectives, driving them to appeal to the public for help in finding the thieves who stole a priceless collection of works by Picasso, Matisse and Monet.

The priceless collection of works had been on show to celebrate the Kunsthal Museum's 20th anniversary, until thieves managed to escape with seven paintings worth millions of dollars.

Al Jazeera's Andrew Simmons reports on one of the most audacious art heists in years.
Raider dear, please note for the next time you post an article that your comments should be highlighted (choose the text you wish to highlight, then click on that yellow-striped square next to the big G at the top of the grey area), and the URL for the article is pasted into the source box just below the box for the article text. Please also note that there are two drop down menus above the title box, and you need only click on the appropriate headings, as I did for you this time. Not a worry -- we all go through this stage; but it would be lovely if you went through it more quickly than I did, more recently than I care to admit.

gromky, it's important to know what the enemy is telling himself and his friends, the choice of lies being information of a sort. Sierra Leone to hold first presidential debate
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Sierra Leone`s two main presidential hopefuls will have the opportunity to explain their policies to a national audience in the first ever head-to-head presidential debate on October 30.

The governing APC`s President Ernest Bai Koroma and his SLPP challenger in the November 17 poll, former junta leader, Brigadier (rtd) Julius Maada Bio, will engage each other in a 90-minute debate that will be broadcast live on national radio

The debate will also be recorded for television and distribution around the country through various means, including cinema halls.

The debate organisers, comprising a group of eight organizations led by the Sierra Leone Association of Journalist (SLAJ), hope that it will add credibility to the electoral process by helping the electorate make informed choice between the two main contenders.

"Good quality political debating between the leaders of the major contesting political parties during the run-up to national elections is fast becoming a positive indicator of democratic progress to enable voters make informed decisions" said SLAJ President Umaru Fofana.

One million Pakistani children miss polio vaccination
[Dawn] Almost one million Pak children were left out of a polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set...
vaccination drive which ended Wednesday, officials said, as unrest and flooding limited access and some parents viewed the campaign as a Western "conspiracy".

Data obtained by AFP showed that some 998,569 children of the 32 million targeted during the three-day nationwide drive, backed by the government and World Health Organization, were left unvaccinated against the crippling disease.

Science & Technology
Earth-Sized Planet Found Orbiting Alpha Centauri
[An Nahar] European astronomers on Wednesday reported they had detected a planet with about the mass of Earth which orbits the closest star to the Sun.

The observation breaks new ground in the hunt for exoplanets -- worlds that exist in other solar systems -- although the planet itself is not "another Earth" as it is located in a scorchingly hot zone.

The planet swings close to the star Alpha Centauri B, one of a triple star system that is 4.3 light years away, which in cosmic terms is just next door to us.

The find was made thanks to a telltale wobble in the star's motion, tugged by the gravitational pull of the passing planet.

The signal is "tiny but real," said Xavier Dumusque of the Geneva Observatory in Switzerland. "It's an extraordinary discovery and it has pushed our technique to the limit."

The transiting planet makes the star move back and forth, in relation to Earth, by less than two kilometers (one mile) per hour, about the speed of a baby crawling.
