"Fallen Angel" is the term for a downed helo, which is a huge, huge Information Operations plus for the Taliban. Helo's are prime targets and the Taliban (with a little help from it's friends) have developed rather ingenious techniques to shoot them down. The recent loss of the SEAL bird was obviusly a major disaster and has put the leadership on edge. We're SUPPOSED to be winning and getting outta here right? As a result, most major ground operations such as this one are NOT conducted unless MEDIVAC support is dedicated, available, and on stand-by. If they were close enough to a FOB to see an Aerostat, they were very close. In this case tragically close. Aviation is needed yes, B-52's, and lots of them. Your village gets mined with IED's or non-metalic Chinese or Russian anti-pers, and you don't inform ISAF.... the village and everybody in it is destroyed. End of story. Unfortunately, this will never happen. This is a fools errand, wrong on so many, many levels. Getting out should be priority number one. If you're not ready and willing to put them all to the sword, you're going to lose. End of rant.

I don't think there's actually a need to kill everyone in the village - a Shermanesque approach would actually work better. Give everyone an hour to leave, taking everything they can carry, and then blow up their homes. These refugees are now too busy rebuilding their lives to give any assistance to the Taliban. It's harsh, but that's war for you.

Another aspect of Yon's story not told relates to "partnered patrols" ie, ISAF patrol with Afghan Army tag-alongs. Bad, bad juju. OPSEC be gone. The Taliban has an amazing network of informants both in and out of uniform.

My point is that this is the 21st century. The total annihilation of civilians in an area infested with insurgents wasn't permissible in Vietnam. It's definitely not permissible today. It's not a moral objection - it's a practical one. Western leaders don't allow their militaries to do these kinds of things. The Pashtun militia called the Taliban was effective precisely because it did these things to enemy villages. Our hands are tied. The Chinese would have laid siege to the village, starved everyone out and then worked them to death by deliberately giving them insufficient food and clothing in China's plentiful wastelands. We cannot.

From what I've read about Vietnam, early in the war it was the same deal. Red Cross marked birds were unarmed. Of course, the VC/NVA had no qualms about shooting them down. Finally somebody smartened up, took the red crosses off of them and put guns on them. From Yon's story, it appears whomever is in charge of the dust off choppers doesn't want to do that as they'll lose control of them. So guys end up dead because some brass asshole is on a power trip.
Ploiesti oil fields, Dresdon, Hiroshima, Nagasaki to name af few (terrible fires, lots of death), and by the way.... the Allies won the war. Over 60 years now, no problems with Japan or Germany. "Not permissable"... ok, no problem, then YOU LOSE THE CONFLICT.

Are you stupid or are you simply working hard at being deliberately moronic? This is not WW2. Bomber Harris was remarkably INEFFECTIVE in his bombing of civilians - it didn't do much at all to win the war compared to the strategic bombing of factories , resources and transport. And even that didn't compare to rolling in with tanks, and ultimately, the grunts with rifles. On toip of that, those methods were the only ones available with the technology and tactics of those days. Wake the f**k up, its not 1944. Nor is it 1964. So your idiotic comparisons don't stand even a cursory look - you're dead wrong on this.
Besoeker, you talk like the "sofa soldier" who has never had to pull the trigger for real. Try instead to lead men in the field, go to war (many times at many intensity levels), have locals and civilians you are trying to liberate and stabilize - then try telling me you can order your men to pull the trigger on women and children you know to be innocent - not like in a nuclear war situation, but what you advocate as a matter of routine operations. In a word, I'm calling you out as a bullshit wannabe. Nobody that's ever been in the shit for real and for long sees it that way, unless you have become morally depraved.

There are times my anger gets the better of me, and I will post some pretty harsh stuff here but that's mainly at a stratetgic level, since that's where some of my work was. But in the real deal, never operated that way at a tactical level, with my squad and my platoon, nor would any of the people out there now put up with that sort of operation (and I know folks from a Marine LTC to a SF A-det Captain I mentored back when they were enlisted would would agree) - its simply not who we are as American Soldiers.
Zhang Fei is correct if we want to take a clear and clean approach to "infected" villages. In the short term it would take them out of fight mode and into survival mode.
The problem is in the long term they only end up being more easily recruited by the Talib and others like them, in refugee camps over on the border, with Pakistan and Iran, and China (If you're talking Afghanistan).
"Kill them all" is simply unsustainable in the modern world - politically we would end up as a nation of pariahs, our soldiers (justifiably) branded "baby killers", and the military torn to shreds by being forced into such dishonorable behavior. Especially when we do have alternative actions and tactics that can be taken. We aren't Nazi Germany and wiping out an entire town as you would have us do - and this isnt the middle ages where Tamerlane's approach of stacking up skulls would work. The only reason to resort to such actions is if they are our ONLY recourse - then it would be done. But its not, we do have other ways of working (see Iraq for a large number of examples), and you need to get that into your head - we will not turn our troops into the equivalent of the Einsatzgruppen. There are other ways, and duty, honor and country demand that we do things the American way.
Stop posturing and pushing self destructive bullshit like an ignorant fool, like those forlorn morons who believes if they had simply killed enough of the blacks, Rhodesia would have remained white ruled.

Lose the GC non-combat stickers on the choppers and arm them all. Arm the choppers highly and kill anyone that shoots at one. That is one answer. No need to play geneva games with this bunch.
If all ambulatory service is fired upon, it is no longer a peaceful mission to get the wounded out.It is a combat mission in all ways.

The reason the Japanese lost wasn't due to local guerrillas. They lost because Uncle Sam had something like 9x Japan's industrial output. Most non-Western conquerors have operated on the basis that non-cooperation will result in the death of whatever leader is managing the district. What happens is that the leaders stomp the sub-leaders all the way down to the individual. This was how the Chinese empire was held together over thousands of years. It ain't pretty, but it's effective.
British commandos have stormed an Italian cargo ship which was hijacked by Somalia pirates in the Indian Ocean, rescuing the crew and capturing nearly a dozen pirates.
The Marines, armed with pistols and SA-80 automatic rifles and operating from a Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship, the RFA Fort Victoria, sped towards the hijacked ship in inflatable boats as a British helicopter buzzed overhead.
They boarded the 56,000-ton bulk carrier Montecristo and disarmed the pirates without encountering any opposition.
It was a compliant boarding the 11 pirates surrendered without firing a shot, said a Ministry of Defence spokesman. They were arrested and detained on board the ship. The ships 23 crew seven Italians, six Ukrainians and 10 Indians were released unharmed.
Four of the Italians were privately-contracted security guards, but in line with international practise they were unarmed and had been powerless to fend off the pirates.
The crew had taken refugee inside a secure, armoured area of the bridge when the ship was hijacked, from where they were able to send out distress signals. They also continued to control the vessels movements, steering it towards the antipiracy forces.

A Rooters team counted 25 corpses in plastic bags in a southern area of Sirte called "Neighbourhood 2". Five corpses shown to the team had their hands tied behind their backs and had gunshot wounds to the head. They wore civilian clothes.
A commander with the National Transitional Council (NTC) said the corpses had been there for at least five days.
Meanwhile, ...back at the pie fight, Bella opened her mouth at precisely the wrong moment... runaway leader Muammar Al Qadaffy loyalists are now holding out in just two small pockets of his home town Sirte interim government commanders said Wednesday after making gains overnight.
NTC fighters walked slowly up the same battle-scarred streets strewn with empty ammunition cases where they had fought fierce festivities a day before. Other fighters searched the partly destroyed houses as a few dazed civilians emerged from their basements.

[Emirates 24/7] In the space of a few hours on Tuesday, a road used by Libyan families fleeing impending fighting was packed with tanks, trucks and ambulances: the NTC forces are gearing up for battle.
The final checkpoint operated by National Transitional Council fighters, some 30 kilometres (20 miles) from the pro-Qadaffy ...a proud Arab institution for 42 years... bastion of Bani Walid, served as both a junction for those leaving the town, and for those looking to capture it.
"We are preparing for the big battle tomorrow," said Jamal Tomzini, clothed in jeans and a white T-shirt with an AK-47 slung over his shoulder, voicing his determination to take Dire Revenge™ for the NTC forces' failed assault on the town over the weekend.
"We tried to make a breakthrough on Sunday, but it was very difficult," he continued, raising his voice to avoid being drowned out by a nearby mosque's call to prayer.
On Sunday, NTC fighters paid a heavy price for their failed assault: poor coordination between brigades from the west of Libya meant they had to abandon control of Bani Walid airport, with 17 killed and more than 80 maimed in festivities with loyalists of ousted strongman Muammar Qadaffy.
Combat in Bani Walid has been put on hold since then, with the interval being used to try to unify the ranks.
But the military command says that on Wednesday, it will resume its efforts to take control of the town, 170 kilometres (105 miles) southeast of Tripoli and where they believe Seif al-Islam, Qadaffy's most prominent son, is staying.
With control of Qadaffy's coastal hometown of Sirte on the verge of transferring to NTC forces, Bani Walid looks set to be the final bastion of the deposed regime.
Fighters loyal to Libya's new administration have for a month been announcing large-scale operations against Bani Walid, but with little follow-up.
Dozens of families took advantage of the relative calm in Bani Walid on Tuesday to flee the oasis, with mattresses and suitcases piled into and on top of their cars.
"We hear that there will be fighting. In the town, there is no doctor, no water, no electricity," said a man in a white Mitsubishi that also carried four veiled women.
He said there were "more than 20,000" civilians still holed up in Bani Walid.
"There are mercenaries and militia in the streets," said the man, who was taking his family to Nasmah, west of the town, where there is a camp for those displaced by the fighting.
Behind him, a child pressed her face against the window of the car, clearly frightened by the the deafening noise of fighters training nearby, launching rockets and bursts of machinegun fire into the desert.
A few hundred metres (yards) from the checkpoint where a dozen tanks stood ready, a team of young doctors turned a number of disused buildings into a de facto field hospital, in preparation for the upcoming battle.
"We are preparing to treat the maimed to provide them emergency care before transferring them to other hospitals with better facilities in the area or in Tripoli," said Aimen Ben Salam, a medical intern, who added that this was not his first battlefield.
"We will stay until the end of the fighting, and then we will move forward with the troops," he said. "Inshallah (God willing), the final stop will be in the centre of Bani Walid."

[Emirates 24/7] Forces of Libya's new regime were looking to move in for the kill against Moamer Qadaffy's ...who single-handedly turned a moderately prosperous kingdom into a dictator's fantasyland... diehards in his hometown on Wednesday after meeting little resistance and taking several key objectives.
A day after seizing Sirte's police headquarters, the National Transitional Council forces were still closing in from the east and west on ever smaller pockets of pro-Qadaffy forces.
Hundreds of them, massed in dozens of pickups, fired rockets from the west of the Mediterranean city whose seizure will enable the NTC to declare the liberation of Libya and clear the way for an election timetable.
An AFP correspondent said Sirte's main square and entire waterfront was under NTC control, along with its fortress-like conference centre, university campus and main hospital, which the fighters all seized on Sunday.
"All our lines are now in place; the area is completely surrounded," said NTC commander Zubayr Bakush.
Farther to the east, a group of fighters threw petrol on a bill board of Qadaffy as others cheered and had gun sex and the cry of "holy shit! Allahu akbar" (God is greatest) blasted from a loudspeaker on a van.
"There are snipers in the buildings up there," fighter Basit Divas told AFP, pointing to a neighbourhood of pock-marked villas, before hundreds of NTC troops advanced on the area backed by a barrage of heavy weapons fire.
Within a few hours, the new regime forces had advanced another two kilometres (1.2 miles) and were only encountering small pockets of resistance, with most of the fire power going one direction only, at the Qadaffy loyalists.
NTC soldiers went house to house, clearing each one of them, and sometimes arresting prisoners.
In the kitchen of one large villa, there were half-finished cups of tea on a tray. Outside another, a man was on his knees in the courtyard, his hands tied behind his back, pleaded with his captors.
"This man had a gun, and two AK-47s. We think he may be from Qadaffy's operation room," said Ayub Basina, a man who identified himself as an NTC doctor.
The plight of stranded civilians raised the concerns of Human Rights Watch ... dedicated to bitching about human rights violations around the world... , which called on both sides Wednesday to minimise harm to them and to ensure that prisoners are treated humanely.
"Commanders on the ground in Sirte need to make sure that their forces protect civilians and allow them to flee the combat zone," said Fred Abrahams, special adviser at HRW.
"All prisoners should be treated humanely and transferred to the NTC authorities who can better ensure their safety," he said in a statement.
The New York-based watchdog said much of Sirte's population of around 100,000 has already decamped, but that an unknown number of civilians remain in the city centre.
New regime fighters in Sirte were buoyed on Tuesday night by a two-hour visit from NTC chief Mustafa Abdel Jalil, and said he visited the one-time Qadaffy showpiece Ouagadougou conference centre.
Medics at a field hospital in western Sirte reported five killed and 42 maimed on Tuesday, while medics in the east reported 11 dead -- including six Qadaffy loyalists -- and 52 maimed.
The NTC forces had besieged Sirte from September 15 before launching on Friday what they termed a "final assault" that has seen nearly 80 of their number killed and hundreds maimed, according to medics.

A single organization with differing goals, equipment, language, doctrine, and organization.... warplanes, backing the NTC, overflew Sirte early on Wednesday without firing, an AFP correspondent reported, as the alliance said in its latest update that it had struck six vehicles in Bani Walid.
Outside that oasis, 170 kilometres (105 miles) southeast of Tripoli, NTC fighters are also gearing for a renewed onslaught on the town, which is another remaining bastion of forces loyal to the ousted dictator.
A withdrawal from intense fighting, in what the military called a "tactical pull back" earlier this week, enabled some civilians to flee Bani Walid on Tuesday, said an AFP news hound on the edge of town.
"We hear that there will be fighting. In the town, there is no doctor, no water, no electricity," said a man in a white Mitsubishi that also carried four veiled women, adding "more than 20,000" civilians were still in the town.
"There are mercenaries and militia in the streets," said the man.
NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen has said the alliance was close to ending its mission in Libya, but despite NTC advances in Sirte, NATO "had no knowledge of the colonel's whereabouts," adding that Qadaffy "is not a target of our operation."
NTC commanders say prisoners have said one of Qadaffy's sons, Mutassim, is in Sirte.
Another, Seif al-Islam, once seen as the former strongman's successor, is believed to be hiding in Bani Walid, possibly with his father.
Admiral Giampaolo Di Paola, head of the NATO military committee, said that while an NTC victory in Sirte "will be an iconic moment", the alliance will only end its air campaign once civilians are definitely out of harm's way and the NTC is capable of keeping the whole country safe.

The son of Col Muammar Gaddafi who had been leading the defence of the city of Sirte has been captured and is being held for questioning, according to officials in the country's interim government.
Three officials in the National Transitional Council (NTC) said Mutassim Gaddafi, the toppled leader's fifth son, was seized trying to flee the city on Tuesday hiding in a family car.
Mutassim, believed to be aged 34, who was national security adviser to his father, was then taken to Benghazi for questioning according to Col Abdullah Naker.
A powerful figure in the Gaddafi regime, he had been considered a rival to his brother Saif al-Islam in the competition to succeed his father.
Rebel brigades camped around the besieged city responded to the news by shooting streams of tracer fire into the night sky in celebration.
"If this news is true then definitely the fighting will be over in Sirte by tomorrow," said one fighter from Misurata's Lions of the Wadi brigade.

A three hour gunfight between armed suspects and Saltillo municipal, Coahuila state and Mexican federal police agents Wednesday morning netted one dead and four wounded.
Meanwhile in the La Laguna region of Coahuila, seven individuals were found murdered in several incidents, according to Mexican news accounts.
Reports are the firefight between armed suspects and Mexican security forces began around 0715 hrs in Jardines Coloniales colony north of Saltillo.
A second gunfight took place near the intersection of bulevars Colosio and Venustiano Carranza. Bulevar Venustiano Carranza is a major artery in Saltillo.
The last confrontation took place near the intersection of Bulevar Valdez Sanchez and Carretera Los Gonzalez.
The toll in the shootings was one civilian dead, three police agents wounded and an unidentified woman who was wounded by gunfire in her arm.
The Mexican weekly Proceso reported gunfights taking place in Mirasierra municipality east of Saltillo.
The ongoing firefights forced Saltillo city officials to plead with residents not to go out either from work or home.
Saltillo is the capital of Coahuila state.
Meanwhile in the La Laguna region of Coahuila:
Four individuals, two couples, were found hanging from a bridge near the intersection of Bulevar Revolucion and Calzada Cuauhtemoc in Torreon, Coahuila. Reports do not detail how the victims died. One of the victims had a La Santa Muerte tattoo on his chest.
Two severed heads were found inside a compact car near the intersection of Avenida Morelos and Calle Degollado near the Zaragoza shopping center in Torreon, Coahuila. Both victims had tattoos on their person.
In Gomez Palacio, Durango, a used car dealer was shot to death at his residence in Fidel Velazquez colpony.
The La Laguna region includes the twin cities of Torreon, Coahuila and Gomez Palacio, Durango. The area also includes Ciudad Lerdo, Durango. It sits astride the main east-west road artery in northern Mexico.
A total of 22 individuals were murdered in ongoing drug and gang related violence in northern Mexican states, including three Chihuahua state police agents shot to death in their car in Juarez, Chihuahua.

Five unidentified individuals were shot to death in Chihuahua, Chihuahua Wednesday morning. The shooting took place at residence near the intersection of calles J. Eligio Muñoz and 37th.

The attack took place as armed suspects dismounted from a Dodge Intrepid and a PT Cruiser, entered a residence near the intersection of calles Lirios and Argon in the Altavista and started shooting. One victim was a female, found dead outside, while the other two were men found shot inside the residence.
Three Chihuahua state police agents were shot to death in Juarez Wednesday. Reports say the trio were part of an anti-extortion squad. The police were aboard a Volkswagen Jetta near the intersection of calles Monte Rocalloso and Toluca in Lomas de San José colony, when they were attacked.
An unidentified man in his 20s was shot to death in Juarez Wednesday. The victim was pursued by several masked armed suspects who were travelling aboard a Chevrolet Blazer when he was shot. The victim was shot near the intersection of calles Yugoslavia and Guadiana in Aztecas colony.
A municipal police officer was shot to death Wednesday in Juarez. The victim was about to enter the Super Gonzalez grocery store near the intersection of Zaragoza and Aztecs when armed suspects shot him.
An unidentified business owner and his son were shot to death in Juarez. The victims were in their communications business store near the intersection of Plutarch and Vicente Guerrero when they were shot.
An unidentified man in his 20s was found shot to death in Juarez Wednesday morning. The victim was found near the intersection of calles Soneto 154 and Irma Ferriz de Reyes.
One man was shot to death and another was wounded at a residence in Pueblo Yaqui, Sonora Sunday. Jesus Omar Gaxiola Valdez, 32, of Joaquin Amaro, Sonora, was shot several times in the back, while the other victim, Jose Gonzalez Cruz, 27, was shot in the left leg. The shooting took place near the intersection of calles Galeana and5 de Mayo in Tobarito colonywhen they were attacked. AK-47 assault rifles were used in the attack.
A man was shot to death in Nogales, Sonora Monday. Fernando Ulises Martinez, 29, was shot on Avenida Plutarco Elias by a lone armed suspect. The victim later died while receiving medical care.
One man was shot to death and another was wounded ina shooting in Ciudad Obgreon, Sonora Tuesday. The victims were aboard a Nissan Tsuru near the intersection of calles Trapense and Laguna in Las Haciendas colony when armed suspects carrying AR-15 assault rifles dismounted from a van and fired on the victims. Victor Sandoval Hernandez AKA The Victrola died at the scene, while Alberto Sepulveda AKA El Venado was taken to get medical treatment. Sandoval Hernandez's wife and four yeear old daughter were in the same vehicle as the victims when the shooting took place but were unharmed.
An man in his 20s was shot to death in Tijuana, Baja California. Juan Manuel Rivera AKA Goofy was on calle Najera in Modulos Cuatro colony in Centenario delegation when he was shot. Manuel Rivera apparently attempted to seek refuge in a residence before he was shot.

Janbaz Zadran was killed in the Haqqani stronghold of Miram Shah in North Waziristan, Pakistan. The area reportedly was targeted in a drone strike the same day he died. Golly gee, we found him when the mighty Pak army couldn't. Or wouldn't...
U.S. officials say Zadran's death makes him the most senior Haqqani leader in Pakistan to be taken off the battlefield. The officials said Zadran helped the Haqqani network orchestrate attacks on troops in Kabul and southeastern Afghanistan. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters.

[Dawn] The city police on Wednesday claimed to have placed in durance vile four suspected hit mans involved in murdering 73 people, DawnNews reported.
Clifton Police have taken into custody two suspects named Faisal Ansari and Daniyal after an exchange of fire in the area of Zamzama. Police also recovered two Kalashnikovs and two pistols from the suspects.
The police claimed that during investigation the two political workers had confessed to the killing of 34 people.

Anti-Terrorism Cell of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) conducted a raid near Pirabad Graveyard of the Orangi Town and placed in durance vile two more workers Abeed alias Barasti and Tariq Mustafa alias Burger affiliated with a political party and recovered one Kalashnikov and two 9MM pistols from their possession.
SSP Chaudhry Aslam of the CID claimed that the two were involved in 39 cases of murders.

[Times of India] A slew of bombings targeted Iraqi police in Storied Baghdad ...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate... on Wednesday morning, including blasts by two jacket wallahs who tried to ram their vehicles through cop shoppe gates. Iraqi officials said 25 people died and dozens more were maimed.
The blasts were aimed at the police, considered the weakest section of Iraq's security forces, and emphasized that despite security gains, long-term stability in the country is still elusive.
US forces are scheduled to leave by the end of 2011. The attack is likely to add to concerns about the ability of Iraqi security forces to effectively secure the city.

A local leader, his driver and a passing teenager were killed by gunmen in broad daylight in Pattani province on Thursday.
The killers attacked shortly before noon when a pick-up truck carrying Hami Umar, 43, stopped at an intersection near Ban Ping in tambon Lubo Yirai. Four men on the back of a pick-up truck that had followed Hami from his office opened fire on them with M16 and AK47 rifles, killing Hami and his driver Rose Jehlong, 47, on the spot. Hami was deputy president of Lubo Yirai tambon administration organisation.
Saifu Panarin, 16, who was driving past on a motorcycle at the time was hit by several AK47 shots and died immediately.
The attack occurred before many horrified onlookers. Police were investigating to establish whether it was a political murder or a terrorist attack.
[An Nahar] A Syrian-born U.S. citizen has been charged with spying on anti-Assad protesters and providing recordings to the regime's intelligence agents in a bid to silence the opposition, U.S. officials said Wednesday, but the Syrian embassy in Washington denied such allegations.
A federal grand jury charged Mohamad Anas Haitham Soueid, 47, on October 5 in a six-count indictment for his efforts against activists in the United States and Syria opposed to Syrian President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad's Despoiler of Latakia... regime. He was set to sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark dock, in a pestilential prison with a life-long lock Tuesday.
The Leesburg, Virginia man was charged with conspiracy and acting as a Syrian government agent in the United States without notifying the US attorney general as required by law. He was also charged on two counts of providing false statements on a firearms purchase form and two counts of providing false statements to federal law enforcement.
The naturalized American, also known as "Alex Soueid" and "Anas Alswaid," was due to make an initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Theresa Buchanan at 2:00 pm (1800 GMT) in Alexandria, Virginia.
The charges came amid escalating tensions between Damascus ...The City of Jasmin is the oldest continuously-inhabited city in the world. It has not always been inhabited by the same set of fascisti... and Washington over the Syrian government's months-long crackdown on opposition protests seeking to oust Assad.
In July, top State Department officials summoned Syrian Ambassador Imad Mustapha to discuss reports that embassy staff had filmed "peaceful" U.S. protests against the Syrian regime.
As part of his conspiracy, Soueid and others intended to "undermine, silence, intimidate and potentially harm persons in the United States and Syria who protested against the government of Syria and President al-Assad, all at the direction and control of the government of Syria and Syrian officials," the indictment said.
Soueid was said to have ordered individuals to make audio and video recordings of anti-regime protests in both countries and of conversations with activists that he would then pass on to the Syrian mukhabarat, or intelligence agents, and other government officials.
From about April 2 to June 10, Soueid emailed a Syrian intelligence agent about 20 audio and video recordings taped in the United States, according to the indictment. He discussed individual protesters using assigned "product codes" and also provided their contact information.
"We're in his ring now, (very) important details I have for you," Soueid wrote in an April 6 email to a Syrian embassy official that included a link to a website for protesters in the United States.
During a late June-early July trip to Syria paid for by the government, Soueid was said to have met with Assad and spoken with him in private.
But when questioned by FBI agents around August 3, Soueid denied he had ever recorded or collected information on people in the United States and or shared any such data with Syrian government officials.
Soueid is also accused of lying on his application to purchase a 9mm pistol. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison on the spying charges, 15 years for the firearms charge and 10 years for making false statements to federal Sherlocks.
Reacting to the news of Soueid's arrest, the embassy said in a statement: "Neither Mr. Soueid nor any other citizen of the US is an agent of the Syrian government."

The embassy also challenged the Justice Department to provide evidence to back up the allegations, which it called "a campaign of distortion and fabrications."

[An Nahar] A Syrian army unit entered Leb on Wednesday and headed towards the Wadi Anjar region in the Bekaa where it set up base past the sand barrier which the Lebanese army had set up years ago to mark the borders, reported Voice of Leb radio.
The coordination and cooperation office between the two armies began their contacts to tackle the matter, with the army command demanding that the Syrian troops withdraw from Leb.
VDL also reported that Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau Bekaa branch managed to arrest two individuals, a Lebanese and a Syrian, accusing them of purchasing light and medium arms and smuggling them to Syria.
The Syrian national confessed that he came to the Bekaa to purchase weapons from Lebanese arms dealers, adding that he was seeking to buy RPGs and machineguns to transport them to Syria.
Investigations are underway with them.

Calhoun ... on Wednesday denounced an alleged Iranian plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador on American soil as a 'dangerous escalation' by Tehran, and called for International condemnation.
The U.S. Treasury Department hit Iran's Mahan Air with sanctions, saying it secretly transported members of a military force accused of plotting to kill the Saudi ambassador on U.S. soil.
As the United States began individual consultations with UN Security Council ambassadors -- a possible precursor to international condemnation or some other action -- Clinton reiterated that Iran must be "held accountable."
The plot is "a flagrant violation of international and U.S. law and a dangerous escalation of the Iranian government's long-standing use of political violence and sponsorship of terrorism," Clinton said.
"We call upon other nations to join us in condemning this threat to international peace and security," the top U.S. diplomat told journalists at a think-tank in Washington. "Iran must be held accountable for its actions."
Clinton said the plot was "directed by elements of the Iranian government," and said this "kind of reckless act undermines international norms and the international system."
The "U.S. has increased our sanctions on individuals within the Iranian government who are associated with this plot and Iran's support for terrorism," she said.
The Treasury Department said commercial carrier Mahan Air transported members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corp-Quds Force -- a force directly linked to the plot -- and Hizbullah across the Middle East.
Any of the airline's assets in the United States will now be frozen and U.S. citizens will be barred from doing business with the firm.
The announcement came a day after Washington leveled the accusations at Tehran and the Treasury Department moved to block the assets of five individuals directly linked to the alleged liquidation plot, which has sent diplomatic shockwaves around the world.
The Treasury Department accused Mahan Air of ferrying Iranian operatives between Iran and Syria for military training and Revolutionary Guards officers in and out of Iraq, and of transporting members of Leb-based the Hezbullies -- which the U.S. deems a terrorist organization.
"Mahan Air's close coordination with the IRGC-QF -- secretly ferrying operatives, weapons and funds on its flights -- reveals yet another facet of the IRGC's extensive infiltration of Iran's commercial sector to facilitate its support for terrorism," said the Treasury's sanctions czar David Cohen.
"Following the revelation about the IRGC-QF's use of the international financial system to fund its murder-for-hire plot, today's action highlights further the undeniable risks of doing business with Iran.
Iran warned the United States to shy away from any confrontation over what Tehran called baseless allegations that it plotted to kill the Saudi ambassador to Washington.
The U.S. Justice Department on Tuesday named two Iranian suspects as Manssor Arbabsiar, 56, a naturalized U.S. citizen, and Gholam Shakuri, said to be an Iran-based member of the Quds Force, a unit of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Shakuri remains on the lam while Arbabsiar was placed in durance vile on September 29 at New York's John F Kennedy International Airport and appeared in court Tuesday in Manhattan. His lawyer said he would plead not guilty, if charged.
U.S. officials say the case was broken open by a paid U.S. source posing as a member of a Mexico-based narco mob, which the defendants believed would provide explosives for the attack on the ambassador.
Mexico said it cooperated closely with the U.S. investigation, and said Arbabsiar was denied entry and put on a flight to New York, where he was placed in durance vile by U.S. authorities.
