[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Mr Aden Ahmed Hersi alias Rufle, the front man of the hapless Somali government forces in Juba region has told the media that a clan-based grouping is disturbing the attempts to stabilise the town of Kismayu, 500 kilometres south of Mogadishu.
Kismayu, the main port town in Jubaland in Southern Somalia, was seized from Al-Shabaab ... the successor to the Islamic Courts... , the Al-Qaeda linked radical Islamist group in Somalia, in late September by an alliance made of Kenyan troops serving with the African Union ...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful... Mission in Somalia (Amisom), Somali government forces and Ras Kamboni Brigade, a largely clan-based militia loosely allied with the other forces.
Mr Hersi stated that Ras Kamboni Brigade built an association with ONLF (Ogaden National Liberation Front), a rebel group mainly active in Eastern Æthiopia.
He added that the two militias were trying to get control of Kismayu.
Talking to Shabelle Radio, an independent broadcaster in Mogadishu, Mr Hersi said, "Somali government forces in Jubaland are finding themselves increasingly uncomfortable as Ras Kamboni Brigade and ONLF extend their illegal control over Kismayu."
A politician in Mogadishu, Mr Dahir Amin Jessow, refuted the very existence of a militia group operating alongside the hapless Somali government forces in Kismayu.
"An accepted force can cooperate with the hapless Somali government force, but Islamic fascistiin competition with the government are unacceptable," said MP Jesow on Tuesday.
"There is no logic in chasing Al-Shabaab fighters out (of Kismayu) to have other Islamic fascistichallenging the policies of the hapless Somali government in," he added.
He reiterated that the security of Kismayu falls primarily on Somali government forces and Amisom peacekeepers in the Jubaland.
He added that unruly militia in the region will create an unnecessary crisis.
"The Somali government cannot accept an armed political grouping operating in parts of the country," remarked the politician. He added that such arrangement was illegal.

there was a drone overhead during that fight - and all we could do was watch our own guys die??? there was no way of hitting back ... with a live feed from a drone coming in?
furthermore, wouldn't the info from that drone have been relayed back to the USA immediately? somebody must have known within hours of that attack that it was a major assault and coordinated. there appears to be a traffic jam somewhere on our information superhighway.

[Al Ahram] The United States on Thursday named a new charge d'affaires to Libya following the murder of ambassador Chris Stevens in last month's cut-thoat attack on the US consulate in Benghazi. Veteran diplomat and Arabic speaker Laurence Pope has arrived in Tripoli ...a confusing city, one end of thich is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn... already, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said in a statement.
His appointment "emphasizes the commitment of the United States to the relationship between our two countries and to the people of Libya as they move forward in their transition to a democratic government," Nuland said.
"We will continue to assist as Libya builds democratic institutions and broad respect for the rule of law -- the goals that Ambassador Stevens worked hard to achieve."
Pope has come out of retirement to take up the post at a time when the State Department is still investigating the September 11 attack in which Stevens and three other American diplomatic staff were killed.

Ambassador must be confirmed by the Senate. I don't believe a recess appointment can be made unless the name is first submitted and THEN the Senate goes out of session but I could be wrong. Besides, there's only a few months to the election. If Obama lost, the ambassador might change with the new administration. Moving someone all the way over there as ambassador for a 2.5 month tour is kinda crazy.

[An Nahar] Several thousand people marched Thursday in Mali's capital Bamako to call for armed intervention by a west African force to help wrest back the vast north from armed Islamist groups.
The demonstrators carried banners and placards expressing support for the Malian army, Prime Minister Cheick Modibo Diarra and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which is preparing to send troops if it gets the backing of the United Nations ...what started out as a a diplomatic initiative, now trying to edge its way into legislative, judicial, and executive areas... and western countries.

Sanago stepped down from power last April, but remains influential in Bamako, where his men are accused of many human rights ...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless... abuses.
Other slogans and banners targeted Tuareg rebels of the separatist National Movement for the Liberation of the Azawad (MNLA), which launched an offensive in the north in January. At first allied to the Islamists, the MNLA was swiftly overpowered and sidelined by them.

[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Burkina Faso ...The country in west Africa that they put where Upper Volta used to be. Its capital is Oogadooga, or something like that. Its president is currently Blaise Compaoré, who took office in 1987, which was only 25 short years ago... President Blaise Compaore has ordered 1,000 combat troops to be deployed in the northern region bordering crisis-hit Mali to guard against kidnappings, the foreign minister said Wednesday.
"This deployment is underway and by the end of the year all border posts can be secured and the entire northern region absolutely controlled by defence and security forces," Foreign Minister Djibril Bassole said at a presser, without specifying the current numbers on the ground.
A complex web of rebel groups, including fighters from Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), has controlled northern Mali since a coup in the country on March 22 threw the country into turmoil.
AQIM has for years carried out kidnappings -- mostly of foreigners, including aid workers -- in the Sahel.
Bassole said that Burkina Faso is working to "ensure that no abductions can take place" in the country's north where many humanitarian workers are working in refugee camps hosting Malians.
Burkina Faso is the main mediator in Mali's crisis, to which the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is trying to broker an end.
Bassole said that the country wanted to "speed up the process," adding that he asked Mali's interim president, Dioncounda Traore, on Tuesday to appoint Mali representatives for the negotiations.
Dialogue aside, ECOWAS is also working on sending 3,300 regional troops to help Bamako reclaim the occupied north.

A total of four individuals were killed or found dead in ongoing drug and gang related violence in Zacatecas state since Tuesday, according to Mexican news accounts.
A news report posted on the website of El Sol de Zacatecas news daily reported that an intergang firefight erupted early Thursday morning in Villanueva municipality wounding four.
The gunfight took place at around 0200 hrs, only 100 meters from the Policia Federal Preventativa (PFP) headquarters. A burned out Volkswagen Jetta sedan was found nearby with a rifle inside. A residence nearby had been severely damaged by gunfire, and one unidentified individual was found dead. The victim has been butchered.
Three other unidentified individuals were killed in two other incidents in Zacatecas state.
Two unidentified individuals were attacked by armed suspects travelling aboard a truck in Guadalupe municipality early Wednesday morning. The incident took place in Arboledas colony on Calle Sicomoro, where the suspects fired on the victims, then fled the scene. One of the victims died at the scene while the other survived, listed in serious condition.
Two unidentified men in their 30s were found dead by a unit of the Mexican 97th Infantry Battalion responding to an anonymous phone tip Thursday in Fresnillo municipality. The find was made Tuesday between the villages of Las Mercedes and El Tule, where soldiers found the victims had been shot to death. At the scene was a piece of cloth which had the names of several members of the Los Zetas criminal group, leading to press speculation the murders were done by elements of the Gulf Cartel. Among the names on the list were Humberto Ramirez, Toñito Torres, and a José Alberto Lopez Najera AKA El Vaquero.

[Dawn] Police have found two bullet-riddled bodies in agricultural fields along Beautiful Downtown Peshawar ...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire. -Charsadda Road in the limits of Daudzai cop shoppe.
The law-enforcers have asked people to contact them for identification of the dear departed. An official told this correspondent on Wednesday that police got information about presence of the bodies of two young men in the morning. He said that they reached the spot to shift the bodies to a local mortuary.
The official said that one of deceased was sporting beard. Both the bodies had signs of bullet injuries. "It seems that they have been rubbed out somewhere else and their bodies have been thrown in Daudzai," he said.
The official said that a case had been registered against unidentified murderers and efforts were underway to get any clue about the accused.
He said that local people had also been informed about the bodies and asked to cooperate with police so that the bodies could be handed over to relatives for burial.

"These three are Indian Mujahideen operatives and linked to a Lashkar figure so it proves that the two groups have close links at some level," Kumar said, adding the suspects had been picked up after traveling to the capital.
The Indian Mujahideen grabbed credit for blasts in July 2008 in Ahmedabad city when 45 died and in Delhi two months later when 20 people were killed.
The city of Pune in the western state of Maharashtra saw a major restaurant bombing in 2010 killed 17 people.

[Dawn] At least 11 people were killed and at least 30 others were maimed in a roadside blast in the town of Sibi in Pakistain's southwestern province of Balochistan ...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it... , DawnNews reported on Thursday.
A bomb comprising 20 kilograms of explosives was planted inside a rickshaw and went kaboom! on Nishtar Road in the main town, officials told DawnNews news hound Khalil Ahmed.
As a result of the kaboom, 11people were killed and more than 30 received injuries. The injured were shifted to Civil Hospital, Sibi.
Twelve shops and five vehicles were also hit by the kaboom and most were completely destroyed.
Sibi lies in northern part of the restive Balochistan province and also adjoins the quiet provincial capital Quetta.

[An Nahar] Three Iranian border guards were killed in festivities with armed narcos near the border with Pakistain, Iranian media reported on Thursday, citing a border official.
Two narcos were also killed in the clash near the region of Koshtegan in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan, Colonel Mehdi Mansourzadeh said.
Mansourzadeh said Iran had seized 50 tons of various drugs in the frontier regions with Afghanistan and Pakistain during the past six months.
Iran is a major transit route for drugs trafficked from leading narcotics producer Afghanistan, with much of the substances bound for Western countries.
The Islamic republic says it is fighting a deadly war against narcos who make up half its prison population. Drug trafficking is punishable by death.
More than 4,000 coppers and soldiers have been killed during the past three decades in festivities with the traffickers, who often travel in heavily armed convoys, according to officials.
Iran has spent more than $700 million on building a "wall" along lengthy stretches of its 1,700-kilometer (1,050-mile) eastern border with Afghanistan and Pakistain in a bid to stop the trafficking, officials say.

[Dawn] Brigadier (retd) Tahir Masood, a former officer of an intelligence agency, was kidnapped near his residence in Islamabad's Defence Housing Authority (DHA) Phase II, DawnNews reported on Thursday.
Security sources said Masood was leaving his residence for his office when unknown men came to kidnap him.
The kidnappers rubbed out Masood's driver, Mohammad Hussain, when he attempted to prevent the kidnapping. The suspects then took Masood and fled to an unknown location.
Personnel from the police and intelligence agencies arrived at the scene of the crime immediately after and began their investigations.
A team from National Database Registration Authority (Nadra) also arrived to collect finger prints.
The high profile crime unit of the police also started collecting evidence from the scene whereas the police requested DHA authorities to share all entry data and footage from its closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras.

[Dawn] At least six persons, including a policeman and a Pakistain People's Party (PPP) activist, were rubbed out in different parts of the city on Thursday that also witnessed roadside dumping of at least three bodies, officials said.
The policeman was bumped off in North Nazimabad while he was riding home, situated in Orangi Town, after duty hours, officials said.
He was hit by two bullets in the head and was struck down in his prime.
"Thirty-four-year-old constable Murshid Alam was intercepted by four men riding two cycle of violences near Qalandria Chowk," said Shahrah-e-Noor Jehan SHO Inspector Raja Tariq while quoting eyewitness accounts. "The attackers used 9mm pistol and sped away after firing at the police official. His body has been handed over to the family after medico-legal formalities at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital."
He said the victim was posted at the Khawaja Ajmair Nagri police headquarters. "The murder seemed to be part of the ongoing wave of coppers's killing," he said. He was the 64th police official killed in the city this year.
Earlier, a PPP worker was killed in a targeted attack near a roadside tea stall in North Nazimabad, police said.
Mohamamd Saleem Lasi, in his late 20s, was having tea with his elder brother and nephew on the greenbelt area between two roads in block L when three gunnies riding a motorbike pulled up there and fired at him, the police added.
"He was hit by three bullets each in the chest, shoulder and abdomen and was struck down in his prime," said an official at the Taimuria cop shoppe.
"He was an area resident and had come there with his elder brother and nephew during scheduled load-shedding hours in the area. The murder seemed to be politically motivated."
Bloody Karachi ...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It may be the largest city in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous... PPP central president Sohail Abidi condemned the incident and said the victim was an active party worker, associated with the PS-101 of the party organizational structure.
"At a time when the PPP leadership both in the province and national level is making efforts for reviving peace mainly in Bloody Karachi the myrmidons are targeting PPP workers just to provoke the ruling party and exploit the vulnerable situation," he said.
ANP man hurt, passerby killed In Gulshan-e-Iqbal, a senior Awami National Party (ANP) worker was maimed and a passerby was killed in a drive-by shooting, police said.
The police added that four men riding two motorbikes fired shots at 40-year-old Shah Kalam while he was stepping out of his apartment building on Abul Hasan Ispahani Road.
"The firing left him badly maimed and also hit the passerby, Mohammad Rafiq," said Sachal SHO Azhar Ali Iqbal.
Both were shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where Rafiq died during treatment, the police said.
The SHO believed that it was a targeted attack. "Shah Kalam was the target in the attack carried out with 9mm and 30-bore pistols," he said.
Three bodies found The bodies of two friends who went missing a couple of days back were spotted along the Lyari ...one of the eighteen constituent towns of the city of Karachi. It is the smallest town by area in the city but also the most densely populated. Lyari has few schools, substandard hospitals, a poor water system, limited infrastructure, and broken roads. It is a stronghold of ruling Pakistan Peoples Party. Ubiquitous gang activity and a thriving narcotics industry make Lyari one of the most disturbed places in Karachi, which is really saying a lot.... River in the early hours of Wednesday, the police said.
Both victims, 31-year-old Ali Mustafa and 33-year-old Abdul Samad, were residents of Kharadar, the officials added.
Ali Mustafa was found rubbed out in the Miran Naka area along the Lyari River, said an official at the Shershah cop shoppe.
The body was shifted to the Civil Hospital Bloody Karachi.
Shortly afterwards, another body stuffed in a gunny bag was found on a road leading to Miran Naka within the remit of the Site-B cop shoppe.
The victim was later identified as Abdul Samad. He was stabbed with his throat slit, said an official at the SITE-B cop shoppe.
"We have reason to believe that the two friends were kidnapped and killed by the same group that abandoned their bodies some distance apart."
As the two bodies reached their residences, tension gripped the old city areas that caused markets closure. Another young man was found rubbed out near Hawkesbay, police said.
"With the help of an identity card found in his pocket, the victim was identified as 27-year-old Abdul Waleed, a resident of Turbat," said Mauripur SHO Inspector Shafiq Tanoli.
But the police remained clueless about the motive for the murder. "It's not yet clear as to why he was killed and who was behind the incident," the inspector said.
The body was shifted to the Edhi morgue after medico-legal formalities.
The police said they were tracing his family.
Man killed in Napier In Napier, a gun attack on a roadside tea stall left one man dead and five others maimed, police said.
An official at the Napier cop shoppe said that Pervez Shabbir, 30, was killed when gunnies riding a motorbike opened fire on the tea stall.
"In the firing, Mohammad Sohail, Karam Ali, Amir Aslam, Zubair Ahmed and Atif Rauf were maimed. All of them were rushed to the Civil Hospital Bloody Karachi where they were being provided treatment," the official said.
Trader rubbed out in Malir
A 40-year-old hosiery shop owner was rubbed out at his workplace in the Azeempura area of Malir, police said.
They added that two men riding a motorbike pulled up at the shop of Mohammad Akbar, one of them entered the facility, fired multiple shots at the owner and sped away along with his accomplice.
"The victim sustained three gunshot wounds and was struck down in his prime," said Al-Falah SHO Inspector Nawaz Gondal.
"The victim originally hailed from Azad Kashmire and was father of six. The incident seemed to be linked with some personal issues," the inspector said.
'Bandit' killed A suspected bandit was killed allegedly by a private security guard in Landhi, police said.
The officials added that two armed bandidos riding a motorbike intercepted a bread supplier's van in Sector 2-B of Landhi No 3, snatched over Rs2,000 in cash and cellphones from three men travelling in the van.
"As they tried to escape, area people shouted for help," said Landhi SHO Inspector Khalid Nadim Baig. "A few youngsters tried to approach but the bandidos fired shots at them. The private security guard of the van, who managed to keep his pistol intact, pulled out his gun and fired shots at the fleeing bandidos leaving one of them maimed."
The maimed robber fell down from the bike and the other was overpowered by the youngsters. Both were given a hiding by a charged mob before the police intervened.
"The police shifted the two men to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where the maimed bandit died during treatment," said the SHO.

[An Nahar] A U.S. drone attack Thursday killed 18 snuffies -- mostly Afghans -- at a turban compound in Pakistain's tribal region near the northwestern border with Afghanistan, officials said.
It was the second U.S. missile strike reported in as many days in the northwest, considered a stronghold of the Taliban and al-Qaeda.
The attack was the deadliest since similar strike in August last year killed 21 Taliban fighters in the restive tribal region.
The attack comes as Pakistain is in shock over the Taliban's attempted liquidation of a 14-year-old child rights activist.
"U.S. drones fired four missiles on a turban compound and initial reports say 11 Death Eaters have died," local administration chief Khushal Khan told AFP in Orakzai district. He said most of the dead were Afghans.
His deputy Rafiq Mohmand later put the toll at 18 dead.
"Several Death Eaters were maimed who died later and the new corpse count is 18," Mohmand told AFP.
A security official confirmed the attack and the corpse count.
The compound was located in the Baland Khel area on the border between Orakzai and North Wazoo, a Pak intelligence official told AFP on condition of anonymity.
Militants had sealed off the flattened building and were recovering bodies, he said.
The building belonged to Maulvi Shakirullah, a commander in the forces of Pak warlord Hafiz Gul Bahadur.
Bahadur is an ally of the al-Qaeda-linked Haqqani network blamed by the Americans for a string of high-profile attacks in Afghanistan.
On Wednesday a U.S. drone strike targeting another compound in North Waziristan killed five fighters, according to Pak officials.

I imagine a great many would happily sell untruths, or just walk away. From what I've read -- for I cannot claim any personal experience in the matter -- Pakistani society is deeply split, with many hating the jihadis, and the changes they have forced.

A key suspect in a car bomb attack which killed five police officers in Yala's Raman district on July 25 is also believed to be involved in the murder of Pol Lt Ingsaree. Kaman Chaichana, who was detained on Monday in the same village where Pol Lt Ingsaree was killed, was probably involved in the plot, according to a police source.

Mr. Erdogan's accusation, reported by Turkey's semiofficial Anatolian News Agency, came only hours after the Russian Foreign Ministry accused the Turks of illegally grounding and searching the plane and a Russian arms export company denied that military equipment from Russia could have been aboard. But the Russians later modified their reaction and by day's end were not ruling out such a possibility.
The Turks, saying they had acted on an intelligence tip, forced the Air Syria flight with 35 passengers aboard to land at an airport in the Turkish capital, Ankara, on Wednesday.

Rebels used at least one tank seized from the army, as well as rocket-propelled grenades and mortar bombs, to hit the Wadi al-Deif base, three kilometres (2 miles) east of the town of Maarat al-Nuaman, which they captured this week, they said.
"The rebels have been attacking Wadi al-Deif since overnight but the army is still shelling Maarat al-Nuaman from it. The city continues to also be hit by warplanes," said Mohammad Kanaan, an rebels activist in the area.

Rebels were in full control of a five kilometre (about three mile) stretch of highway near the key town of Maaret al-Numan, which they seized on Tuesday, the news hound said.
Syria's army uses the highway to send reinforcements to the commercial capital Aleppo, which since mid-July has been one of the main focuses of the country's nearly 19-month civil war.
Syrian troops had during the night attempted to retake Maaret al-Numan but had failed, rebel commander Akram Sale told AFP, adding that four rebels were killed overnight.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights had on Tuesday reported that rebels overran the city after a fierce 48-hour gunbattle and heavy shelling, taking control of eight army positions.
Fierce fighting has raged since then as the army seeks to regain control of the strategic city, which has a population of around 125,000 but which has now been largely deserted by civilians.

Firaz Abdel Hadi, a rebel media official, said that almost 300 people have been killed in three days in Maaret al-Numan, including 55 civilians, 46 rebel fighters and 190 Syrian army soldiers.
Other sources said that regime forces executed at least 65 prisoners before retreating from the city. A surviving prisoner said guards had opened fire on 80 prisoners before fleeing.
The rebels have set up their headquarters in the mosaic museum in the city, which had been occupied by regime forces.
