Afghanistan
US military death toll in Afghanistan reaches 2,000
The US military has suffered its 2,000th death in the Afghan war - with a suspected "insider" attack at a checkpoint in the east of the country.

A US soldier and a foreign contractor were killed while two Afghan soldiers died and four were injured.

The nationality of the contractor was not given immediately.

Attacks by rogue elements in the Afghan security forces sharply increased this year, prompting the coalition to suspend joint operations this month.

Requests for joint operations must now be approved by regional commanders.

The American death toll goes back to the US-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.

The new deaths occurred on Saturday in Wardak province, a spokesman for the Nato-led International Security Assistance Force said.

The incident took place at a checkpoint near an Afghan National Army base in the district of Sayedabad, according to Afghan officials

An Afghan soldier turned his gun on Americans and started shooting, Shahidullah Shahid, a provincial government spokesman, told the Associated Press news agency.

"Initial reports indicate that a misunderstanding happened between Afghan army soldiers and American soldiers," he said.

It is unclear what happened to the Afghan soldier who allegedly opened fire first.

Military officials from both sides have launched a joint investigation.

#2  ...That misbegotten nation is no longer worth a single American life. Having said that, today all I can think of is the ranting that went on a few years ago when the number of lost equalled the 9/11 casualties, and so many in the MSM screamed that we had to come home now...we were "even".

#4  Same as I said c. 1969, 'If you don't have an intention and means of winning, you should not be fighting.' Surrender is bad but p*ssing away good men for NOTHING is far worse.

#5  For the US, Vietnam was a limited war in the context of a global cold war. Surrender thus had limited and calculable consequences for the US (not for South Vietnam.)

On 9/11 the US was challenged on her own territory by a massive attack on the scale of Pearl Harbor.

The consequences of losing the 9/11 war will be felt in North America.

The Egyptian president, a member of the MB, is openly strutting around in the US, lecturing and not so subtly threatening Americans like a Soviet chairman would have threatened a satellite nation.

A (former?) member of theocratic Iran's ruling class now a politically connected Imam in Dearborn in the US openly demands Sharia modifications to the US constitution. Ditto for a Hamas affiliated and politically connected Imam in NJ.

And there's no protest from America's political class. Instead the POTUS. in the UN, not so subtly threatens those who deviate from Islamic orthodoxy.

etc. etc.

Unthinkable a few years ago, the new normal in Amerika Amrika?

Bomb blast kills two police near Afghan training academy
[Dawn] A roadside kaboom blast killed two coppers in Herat
...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns...

...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A collection of multinational and multilingual and multicultural armed forces, all of differing capabilities, working toward a common goal by pulling in different directions...
to Afghan control, Afghan authorities said.

Raouf Ahmedi, a front man for the Afghan police commander for the western region, said one of the coppers killed in Saturday's kaboom was a teacher at the academy in Adraskan district.

He said two other coppers were maimed by the remote-controlled bomb that went kaboom! as their vehicle passed.

Last week, a bomb in a parked cycle of violence went kaboom! outside the training centre, killing two security guards.

KDF kills Shabaab commanders and takes over bases
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) have seized Al-Shabaab's
... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
command centre in Kismayu as it emerged that two top commanders of the militia were among the first casualties of the Friday attack.

Sheikhs Hassan Yakub and Abdikarim Adow were among the cut-throats killed during aerial bombings targeting Al-Shabaab logistic centres, said the officer in charge of information Colonel Cyrus Oguna.

"KDF has captured the whole old town and expanding control towards the new town. So far we have taken the Al-Shabaab command centre north of the city, the airport, the local university and a major road block that was being used by Al-Shabaab," he said.

The bombardments were jointly carried out by the Air Force with F-5 fighter jets and the Kenya Army's airborne unit, the 50 Air Calvary Battalion, that deployed helicopter gunships.

The two commanders had been co-ordinating operations from the command centre that was on Saturday afternoon occupied by the Kenya Army Infantry ground troops backed by allies from the Somali National Army.

Back in Kenya, security agencies are on high alert to guard against possible retaliatory attacks. As a result of the defeat the militia group shut down its radio and closed its offices in Kismayu.

It was the first time in five years that the Al-Shabaab offices in Kismayu had been closed.

KDF made advances into Kismayu as it emerged that President Kibaki -- who is on official travel in New York -- was kept abreast of what is billed as Kenya's biggest military move.

"The Head of State was fully informed about the takeover. Before he went (to the US), he received a full briefing from General Karangi. He was in the picture all through," said the head of the Presidential Press Service Isaiah Kabira.

Al-Shabaab has been controlling Kismayu's commerce and levying taxes as one way to help run its operations across Somalia and beyond.

Barely 24 hours after the infantry troops landed, Al-Shabaab fighters vanished from defence posts they had erected in parts of Kismayu and the militia's propaganda wing, the HSM Press, announced the withdrawal posted in its official Twitter account.

"Last night, after more than five years the Islamic administration in Kismayu closed its offices," the post stated.

"The ground forces have not gotten any resistance. However we are treating it with caution. We are validating the information and trying to assess its authenticity. So far it remains just a theory," said Col Oguna.

He added that al-Andulus radio, which the Al-Shabaab used to broadcast to the residents, had gone off the air.

In Nairobi, security officers were put on high alert following intelligence reports that surviving members of a defeated Al-Shabaab were likely to carry out attacks in the city and other parts of Kenya.

"We have intelligence reports indicating there could be Dire Revenge™ attacks. Security officers are on high alert and the public is reminded to maintain vigilance and report any suspicious behaviour and persons to the police," said police front man Eric Kiraithe.

KDF continued the attacks into the night, and five Al-Shabaab Islamic fascisti were killed, and a lorry and an assortment of weapons recovered.

Operation Sledge Hammer, the code name of the secret night attack that saw Kenyan troops set foot in Kismayu for the first time since the incursion into Somalia in October last year was the peak of three days of secret undertaking.

#1  Al-Shabaab fighters vanished from defence posts
They just concealed their guns and stepped aside. Soon they'll start blowing up Kenyans or shooting them when they're in small groups. The only hope is the general population has had enough of Al-Shabaab and points them out to the Kenyans - but they have to either be desperate or very confident the Kenyans will follow through. We see in A'stan what happens once the confidence is gone.

Islamists Destroy Another Saint's Tomb in Morth Mali
[An Nahar] Islamists destroyed Saturday another tomb of a Mohammedan saint in a northern Mali region under their control, witnesses said.

"I saw the Islamists in Goundam destroy the mausoleum of Alfa Mobo, beside the cemetery," local municipal councilor Mamadou Cisse told Agence La Belle France Presse.

Another witness, who declined to be identified, said, "They smashed the mausoleum down to the level of the tomb."

He added that "there were 11 of them and someone was filming it."

The witnesses said the Islamists were armed with axes and other tools.

Goundam, 90 kilometers from Timbuktu, is in the hands of the Islamist group Ansar Dine (Defenders of Faith), which with other bully boyz has been destroying local Mohammedan shrines since seizing northern Mali in April.

The Islamists say the shrines, venerated by local people and declared part of the world's heritage by the United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
, are "haram", or forbidden in Islam.

Ansar Dine sparked widespread condemnation when they began destroying the renowned cultural treasures of Timbuktu on July 1, shortly after UNESCO placed them on a list of endangered World Heritage sites.

They destroyed seven of Timbuktu's 16 mausolea of ancient Mohammedan saints and the sacred door of the 15th-century Sidi Yahya mosque.

On September 15 beturbanned goons of the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO) demolished the mausoleum of another saint, Cheik El-Kebir, 330 kilometers north of the city of Gao.

Kebir's tomb is venerated by the Kunta tribe whose members live in Mali, Algeria, Mauritania and Niger.

Libyans surrender hundreds of weapons to army
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Libyans turned over hundreds of weapons at collection points in the capital and the eastern city of Benghazi on Saturday following rallies which called for disarmament and the disbanding of militias.

A steady stream of men surrendered their weapons to national army troops stationed in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of thich is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
's Martyrs Square and in Benghazi's Freedom Square, AFP journalists reported.

"This is the first drive and it won't be the last," army front man Ali al-Sheikhi told AFP in reference to the campaign launched by the army in partnership with civil society organizations.

Colonel Hussein Abdullah Khalifa, overseeing the collection of weapons in Tripoli, said the initiative was galvanised by anti-militia rallies pressing for a united army which were held in Libya's two largest cities this month.

"We are astonished by the positive turn out," he said.

Tripoli campaign organiser Ziad Hadia told AFP that hundreds of people turned in "light, medium and heavy weapons as well as vast amounts of ammunition ranging from bullets to tank shells."

Most people handed in assault rifles, he said.

"We also received six heat-seeking missiles," added Hadia, while one person had come forward with a tank which is to be delivered to the army later at Qazi's guesthouse an undisclosed location.

In Benghazi, the army tallied some 730 light weapons, 200 hand grenades, 100 anti-personnel and anti-tank mines, along with 20,000 assorted ammunition, an AFP journalist said.

... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
, whose insurgency has killed hundreds of people.

The arrests came after soldiers from a special military unit deployed in the northeastern city of Maiduguri placed in long-term storage

an immigration officer, Grema Mohammed, for allegedly being an active member of Boko Haram, a military front man said.

Boko Haram is blamed for deadly attacks that have killed more than 1,400 people since 2010 as part of an insurgency in northern and central Nigeria.

The arrest "led to further arrests of some other security personnel that had been participating in various terrorist attacks in Borno and Yobe states," Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa said of the two states in northeastern Nigeria, where Boko Haram has been based.

He did not specify how many arrests had been made.

"He confessed to being an active member of the Boko Haram terrorist sect which he joined long before the 2009 crisis," Musa said in a statement in reference to a 2009 uprising by the group.

"He also confessed to having been trained alongside 15 other members of the sect on weapon handling, liquidation and special operations in Niger republic," Musa added, referring to the neighboring nation.

Grema was placed in long-term storage

over a month ago at a checkpoint while allegedly impersonating an army lieutenant, Musa said.

The suspect also confessed to the killings of some senior civil servants, security personnel and politicians who had spoken against the sect in Yobe and Borno states.

He had also participated in attacks on cop shoppes, a prison and the burning of public schools, Musa said.

There have previously been accusations of involvement of some security personnel in the attacks, which have grown increasingly sophisticated.

Qaeda Bomber Kills Self, Injures Five in Yemen
[Yemen Post] An Al-Qaeda jacket wallah killed himself and injured five other people after he detonated his explosives at a gathering led by the deputy director of the Lawder city in Yemen's Abyan
...a governorate of Yemen. The region was a base to the Aden-Abyan Islamic Army terrorist group until it dropped the name and joined al-Qaeda. Its capital is Zinjibar. In March 2011, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula declared the governate an Islamic Emirate after seizing control of the region. The New York Times fastidiously reported that those in control, while Islamic hard boyz, are not in fact al-Qaeda, but something else that looks, tastes, smells, and acts the same. Yemeni government forces launched an effort to re-establish control of the region when President-for-Life Saleh was tossed and the carnage continues...
province on Saturday, security sources told the Yemen Post.

The deputy, Muhammad Al-Aidrous, survived the bombing which occurred at the directorate building while the body of the bomber, who was identified by the authorities, was flung at the area in a terrible way, the sources said.

The five, who were maimed in the attack, were of the bodyguards of Al-Aidrous, the sources added.

Al-Qaeda has recently stepped up its suicide kabooms against Yemeni officials, especially military and security chiefs and personnel as well as officials the anti-Qaeda popular committees after the army drove its Islamic fascisti out of their strongholds in Abyan and Shabwa provinces this year.

In the meantime, the Yemeni army is continuing a massive hunt for the remaining operatives of Al-Qaeda, most of whom have been taken out by US drones in the southeastern and southern regions.

Explosions hit 314th brigade in al-Mahra
[Yemen Post] Huge kabooms hit the 314th brigade located in al-Ghaidha of al-Mahara governorate on Saturday, local sources affirmed.

The sources anticipated that stocks of weapons might went kaboom! inside the brigade, pointing out that there were no any information about casualties.

Meanwhile,
...back at the pond, the radioactive tadpoles grown into frogs. Really big frogs, in fact...
local sources said that violence acts broke out inside the central jail of Damar governorate between a number of custodies and security forces , pointing out that tear gas were used to end the chaos.

They spelt out that dozens of prisoners were maimed, affirming that others more fell unconscious.

Sources of the jail said that the prisoners protested as security forces took a prisoner, who faced a death sentence, to be executed.

The central prison of Dhamar witnessed violence acts in late 2011 and the beginning of 2012 as festivities broke out between security forces and prisoners in which seven persons were killed and dozens others were maimed.

Well-informed sources said that about 15 persons were killed and dozens others were maimed inside the jail since September 2011.

Committees formed by the government to probe the events have not disclose any outcomes or reasons of violence.

Policemen foiled in February a large-scale escape attempt by prisoners from the prison. There were several attempts of the prisoners to escape.

The Yemeni capital, Sana'a, along with some Yemeni main cities witness a state of loose security as suicide kabooms and target of military locations increased during the few past months.

A Policia Federal (PF) road patrol element encountered several unidentified armed suspects near a farm in Torreon, Coahuila, killing five, according to Mexican news reports.

According to a news item posted on the website of Vanguardia news daily, the shootout took place just after noon Saturday near the Matamoros-Torreon road near the Puerta de Torreon, where a PF patrol designated Grupo Geo observed five armed suspects in Sol de Oriente colony. When shots were exchanged, the criminal group fled into a farm house on calle Toyama.

The armed suspects continued fire on PF agents from inside the house, when agents decided to use pepper gas against the suspects. One suspect attempted to leave the farmhouse but was dropped by police gunfire. At the conclusion, PF agents found four armed suspects dead inside the house.

PF agents found two AK-47 and one AR-15 assault rifle, and one 9mm pistol.

In Torreon, in southern Coahuila state and Piedras Negras in northern Coahuila has experienced what can only be termed a severe uptick in drug and gang related violence especially since the prison break 12 days ago in the border city of Piedras Negras. According to Spanish and English language reports, Piedras Negras has experienced shootings nearly every day since the prison break.

According to Mexican press accounts many of those released from prison were members of Los Zetas criminal group.

According to a report published in last Wednesday's Eagle Pass, Texas Business Journal, the municipality of Piedras Negras has been under martial law.

However, under the Mexican Constitution, martial law can only be imposed by the Mexican president of the republic and only with consent of the Chamber of Deputies and the president's cabinet.

However, no other Mexican media outlet or even social media have confirmed that the municipality was under martial law, or that a declaration of martial has been announced.

[Dawn] Three more people were killed on political grounds while sectarian attacks left two other men dead on Friday as the law-enforcement agencies appeared helpless to stem the violence that claimed a total of 10 lives across the city.

Just over the past three days, the rising wave of killings has left at least 31 people dead, many of them on political and sectarian grounds.

On Friday, two Muttahida Qaumi Movement
...English: United National Movement, generally known as MQM, is the 3rd largest political party and the largest secular political party in Pakistain with particular strength in Sindh. From 1992 to 1999, the MQM was the target of the Pak Army's Operation Cleanup leaving thousands of urdu speaking civilians dead...
activists, a Pakistain People's Party worker and a worker of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat and a pesh imam of a Barelvi mosque were bumped off in separate incidents of firing.

Police said that a young man was bumped off at a welding shop in the old city area of Kalakot.

sector, the police said.

Kalakot SHO Javed Baloch said that the victim died before he could be shifted to hospital. The body was later taken to the Civil Hospital Bloody Karachi

The police Sherlocks seized several spent bullet casings of a 9mm pistol found at the scene of the crime. They said the victim had sustained gunshot wounds to his head and chest.

Following the killing, tension gripped the old city areas compelling traders to keep their businesses closed.

In New Bloody Karachi, a watchman said to be an MQM activist was rubbed out on Friday night.

Police said Abdul Hakeem was on duty at the New Bloody Karachi town office where he was sprayed with bullets. He was struck down in his prime, they added.

#1  Sad - that's a vital specialty. Kind of tough to defuse a remote-control bomb though, if the trigger man is watching.

there is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened...
they added that Death Eaters are still present in some areas of the tribal region.

Thousands rally in Karachi against anti-Islam film
[Dawn] Thousands of people thronged the streets of Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It may be the largest city in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
on Saturday in the latest protest against an anti-Islam film, police and witnesses said.

The protesters, who included activists from the 'Sunni Tehrik
...formed in Karachi in 1992 under by Muhammad Saleem Qadri. It quickly fell to trading fisticuffs and liquidations with the MQM and the Sipah-e-Sahaba, with at least a half dozen of its major leaders rubbed out. Sunni Tehreek arose to become the primary opposition to the Deobandi Binori Mosque, headed by Nizamuddin Shamzai, who was eventually bumped off by person or persons unknown. ST's current leadership has heavily criticized the Deobandi Jihadi leaders, accusing them of being sponsored by Indian Intelligence agencies as well as involvement in terrorist activities...
', wore green and white headbands as they marched through the city's main M.A. Jinnah road while some trampled on the American flag.

They rolled their eyes, jumped up and down, and hollered poorly rhymed slogans real loud including "Hang the American film maker" and "We are ready to sacrifice our lives for the honour of Prophet Mohammad".

"We strongly condemn this anti-Islam movie, it is a criminal act," Mufti Muneebur Rehman, a prominent religious leader told the rally, and called for a global ban on insulting "all prophets and messengers".

Shafiq Ahmad, a police brass hat in Bloody Karachi, said there were "at least 15,000" protesters while rally organisers claimed "millions of people" participated.

Police beefed up security before the rally, while paramilitary forces were also deployed.

The crudely-made "Innocence of Mohammedans" movie has sparked angry and at times violent demonstrations across the globe.

Pakistain experienced the worst of the violence last Friday when nationwide rallies mobilised more than 45,000, many members of right-wing religious parties.

At least 21 people were killed and 229 maimed, mainly in festivities with police.

Southeast Asia
The confessions of a Bali bomber
Meet Idris: Bali bomber, a senior member of the terrorist group that planned and then carried out the attack 10 years ago that killed 202 people, including 88 Australians.

Ask him for an explanation of what he did and Idris comes up with the most lame of all possible answers: he was just following orders.

In his first interview with Australian media, the freed bomber says he would willingly wage jihad on Indonesian soil again, but only if he thought he was fighting in a "legitimate war zone" - including an armed inter-religious conflict on Indonesian soil.

He said, "If some time in the future I form the intention to do jihad, it is obvious that I'll go to war. If there is such a zone in Indonesia, of course I will go there."

It's clear he's mostly concerned about himself. What torments him is the question of whether or not he will go to heaven.

He said, "I have never felt glad, happy or gay about this affair. In my heart I keep hoping that what I did was right and that I will be rewarded. However, I'm always worried that it was wrong and that Allah will punish me."

Idris was 12 kilometers away on a motorcycle with fellow terrorist Ali Imron when he felt, as much as heard, the bomb go off. He recalled, "It's as if it came from underground."

As the subterranean rumble reached him, he did not spare a thought for any of the victims. His thoughts were only for himself. He said, "The feeling of fear dominated. [Ali Imron and I] went to a restaurant. There was rice in front of us. We couldn't finish it, not even a quarter of it. Even water tasted bitter … No one talked. We heard the sirens, ambulance, we felt really afraid."

Idris can only speak now because he is a free man. He escaped conviction for the Bali bombing on a technical legal point when Indonesia's constitutional court ruled he could not be convicted under laws passed after the bombing took place.

He was sentenced to 10 years in jail for a different bombing - the Marriott Hotel in Jakarta in 2003 - which killed 12 people. But after remissions and parole he served just five years. He was released in 2009.

Now he lives with his family and looks after his sick mother, but complains he cannot find work because his past means no one will give him a job.

Idris attended Ngruki, Abu Bakar Bashir's school of jihad in Solo, but his learning did not lead to action until 2002. Then two of Indonesia's most important jihadis, Amrozi and Mukhlas, the top leader of Jemaah Islamiah in Asia, called him to a small house in Solo.

It was a meeting to plan a bomb attack on "America and its allies" in Bali - a place they saw as a center of infidel hedonism.

Idris became the manager of the project. He said, "My role … was to provide logistics and to prepare various things, such as providing a house, car, surveying the target, and also preparing food. Basically anything my friends might need."

Idris says Mukhlas, who was executed in 2008, was the one who gave the orders. To Idris, everything he did can be explained by that fact.

He said, "I couldn't think about if [the attack] was justified or not justified. If the senior commander ordered us to do it, we had to."

What about conscience? Humanity? "I didn't think, I simply followed what Mukhlas said."

Idris does not feel bad about being released from jail. He said, "It is the state who created the law … Whether it was fair or not I cannot say."

When I showed Idris pictures taken in 2002 of maimed and burnt bodies, of the destroyed buildings and the remains of the van that contained the bomb. I asked him how he feels and he paused for thought.

He said, "When I saw the pieces of bodies, I just thought something like, 'Wow,' or 'Oh my God', because I know there isn't any Islamic law about this,'' he says. ''It's like: 'Look how much damage I did'."

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Fighting Rages in Syria's Aleppo, East Damascus
[An Nahar] Around 100 people were killed across Syria as fighting raged in a strategic district of Syria's commercial capital Aleppo
...For centuries, Aleppo was Greater Syria's largest city and the Ottoman Empire's third, after Constantinople and Cairo. Although relatively close to Damascus in distance, Aleppans regard Damascenes as country cousins...
on Saturday, the third day of a rebel offensive to seize the city, a watchdog said.

The focal point of combat was Salaheddin, a rebel stronghold on the southwest side of the city where bully boyz attacked an army position, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

It also reported that shops in the Aleppo souk, a popular tourist destination before Syria's violence erupted in March 2011, were set ablaze in the festivities between rebels and soldiers.

Fighting also broke out near a military airport in the outskirts of Damascus
...Capital of the last overtly fascist regime in the world...
and a military academy, the Observatory said, as rebels launched an attempt to seize the two complexes.

The army, meanwhile, pounded several districts of the embattled city, including the rebel-held eastern neighborhood of Sakhur and nearby Bab al-Hadid, the watchdog said.

The violence raged after rebels launched on Thursday an all-out campaign to capture the northern city, the scene of some of Syria's fiercest violence since July 20, the Observatory said.

Residents of Suleiman al-Halabi, one of Aleppo's main districts, reported finding an unknown number of abandoned corpses on the streets, Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told Agence La Belle France Presse.

Violence also raged in the capital Damascus as new festivities broke out in the southern district of Assali, the Observatory said.

Meanwhile,
...back at the scene of the crime, Lieutenant Queeg had an idea: there was a simple way to tell whether Manetti had been the triggerman -- just look at his shoes!...
the army stepped up operations on the Eastern Ghuta area of Damascus province, shelling several towns near the capital.

The Eastern Ghuta area of the capital and its province is home to some of the rebel Free Syrian Army's fiercest and best organized battalions, including Tajamo Ansar al-Islam.

On Wednesday, two car booms struck an army headquarters in the heart of Damascus, and Tajamo Ansar al-Islam was the first FSA group to claim responsibility for the operation.

A total of 51 people were killed in violence across the strife-torn country, including 27 civilians and 18 soldiers, said the Observatory, which had reported 136 people dead in violence the previous day.

They Syrian Coordination Committee said that the number of people who were killed in the festivities on Saturday rose to 94 thus far, among them 7 women and 5 children.

Also on Saturday, Assad's forces shelled localities in the southern province of Daraa as well as in Deir Ezzor to the east.

#3  Per reports, there are some kurdish neighborhoods in the North suburbs of Aleppo and these have been siding with the govt in the latest round of heavier fighting.

Also, today the govt took back a large portion of the Salaheddin district.

Although the rebels haven't said so, I think part of their plan is to use the chaos of the fighting so that they might get some more chances to take weapons from less well guarded govt depots and maybe get some more govt troops to desert.

otherwise, the strategy doesn't seem so smart
