Morrocan blamed for bloody Basilan bombing
[Gulf Today] A senior Philippine cabinet official said that intelligence agents “are 80 percent sure” that a Moroccan national with links to the ISIS-inspired Abu Sayyaf terrorists was responsible for the deadly bomb explosion that killed 11 people including himself on the island province of Basilan on July 31. Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana cited the testimonies of two witnesses as well as militiamen who told investigators that the driver of the van packed with improvised explosives was “foreign looking” and could not speak the local language.

Lorenzana also said that intelligence agents secured a photo of a “foreign-looking” person believed to be a Moroccan national from their sources in Basilan’s neighboring island of Sulu where the Abu Sayyaf operates, who was labelled as a “martyr” with his head encircled. But he insisted that Abu Sayyaf militants were behind the attack and were targeting about 4,000 schoolchildren who were to participate in a parade in Lamitan City on July 31.

He said, “We suspect that the guy was trying to bring his van to a plaza in Lamitan where about 4,000 schoolchildren were to participate in a parade after completing a nutrition program sponsored by the Department of Education.”

Based on intelligence reports, Lorenzana added that the Moroccan, he did not identify, tried but failed to recruit Moro youths willing to undertake “suicide-bombing missions” for the Abu Sayyaf, who gained notority for a spate of kidnap-for-ransom cases that been marred by the beheading of their foreign and Filipino hostages.

Lorenzana said the Moroccan was driving a passenger van when it developed engine trouble before reaching a checkpoint manned by soldiers and militiamen in a village in Lamitan. The driver used sign language in seeking help to move the van because he apparently did not speak the local language. Several militiamen, who responded to his call for help became suspicious when they saw “containers with wirings” inside the van and reported this to the soldiers, he said.

Russian military creates 8 outposts along Golan Heights border
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Russian military police will create eight outposts near the demilitarized zone at the Golan Heights on the Syrian-Israeli border, a deputy commander of the Russian forces in Syria in charge of of military police, Viktor Zaytsev, said.

According to the official, the first permanent observation post of the Russian military police has already been set up.

"Seven more will be created in the future. They will serve as a security guarantee for civilians of the Quneitra governorate," he said.

Another deputy commander of the Russian forces in Syria, Sergei Kuralenko, said the outposts will be created near the demilitarized zone, controlled by UN forces.

"I would like to stress that there will be no Russian military police posts in the demilitarized zone," he said.

Golan Heights
The Golan Heights had been part of Syria since 1944, but the territory was seized by Israel during the 1967 Six-Day War. In 1981, the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, passed a law on the Golan Heights, which unilaterally proclaimed Israel’s illusory sovereignty over that territory. The annexation was deemed illegal under UN Security Council Resolution 497 of December 17, 1981.

Later, a part of the territory and the town of Quneitra were returned to Syria on the condition that the territory will be demilitarized and a UN mission will be deployed there.

According to earlier reports, a UN mission, accompanied by the Russian military police, has for the first time ever entered the region from the territory of Syria since the start of the Syrian conflict. Prior to that, UN forces headquartered in the capital Damascus, had to enter the area via the Lebanese border, because the Syrian part of the demilitarized zone was held by hard boys.

Tonight’s attack by the jihadist rebels marks the first time this month that they have struck the government-held towns in northern Aleppo.

Russian forces attack west Aleppo for first time in months
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Russian Aerospace Forces carried out a powerful attack against the jihadist rebels in the western countryside of Aleppo on Friday.

According to a military communique, the Russian Aerospace Forces strategically bombed a weapons depot and headquarters belonging to the Ottoman Turkish-backed Jabhat Tahrir Souriya group inside the west Aleppo town of Urum Kubra.

The communique added that the Russian Aerospace Forces destroyed both the jihadist weapons depot and headquarters on Friday, causing a massive kaboom that could be heard from several kilomters away.

This strike by the Russian Aerospace Forces marks the first time in several months that they have targeted the jihadist rebels in west Aleppo.

The reason for the absence of Russian jets in west Aleppo is due to the large presence of Ottoman Turkish Army soldiers near the strategic Aleppo-Damascus Highway.

However,
today is that tomorrow you were thinking about yesterday...
when the Russian forces receive direct coordinates of a jihadist site, they will attack their positions.

Iranian ballistic missile flew over Strait of Hormuz during recent drill
[ALMASDARNEWS] When Iranian naval forces trained for an operation to potentially shut down the strategic Strait of Hormuz last week, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps quietly tested a ballistic missile over the same strait, according US spy satellites.

Fox News reported Friday that Iranian forces launched the Fateh-110 Mod 3 missile during Iran’s large-scale naval exercises to practice shutting down the Strait of Hormuz, citing information from a US surveillance satellite and three officials familiar with the matter. It appears to be Tehran’s first missile test of 2018.

The missile took off from Bandar-e-Jask, Hormozgan Province, in southeast Iran, US officials told Fox, and traveled approximately 100 miles over the Strait of Hormuz before landing in a desert on Iranian territory. The flight path was "shore-to-shore," one of the officials said.

The Pentagon acknowledged Iran’s naval exercises but declined the opportunity to comment on the missile launch.

"It’s pretty clear to us that they were trying to use that exercise to send a message to us that as we approach this period of the sanctions, they had some capabilities," US Gen. Joseph Votel, head of US Central Command, told news hounds Wednesday at the Pentagon. Iran, however, regularly conducts naval drills near the strait, and the missile test was done in what amounts to Iran’s territorial waters, a US official confirming the test said, Rooters reported.

Any disruption in the strait’s security would instantly spur chaos in energy markets and could have devastating impacts on national economies across the globe. Data from Lloyd’s List Intelligence suggest some 80 percent of crude oil flowing out of the Persian Gulf through the strait is destined for China, Japan, India, South Korea, Singapore and other Asian markets.

"The Strait of Hormuz is the world’s most important oil chokepoint because its daily oil flow of about 17 million barrels per day in 2015 accounted for 30 percent of all seaborne-traded crude oil and other liquids. The volume that traveled through this vital choke point increased to 18.5 million b/d in 2016," the US Energy Information Agency reports.

Air strikes kill 14 civilians in northern Syria
[DAWN] Air strikes killed at least 14 civilians and maimed dozens more on Friday in a rebel-held town in northern Syria, a war monitor said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights could not say whether the raids on Orum al-Kubra in Aleppo province were carried out by regime or allied Russian aircraft.

"A series of air strikes on the town killed 14 civilians, including three children, and left dozens of people injured," said Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman.

"The toll may rise... because people are trapped under the rubble," Abdel Rahman said.

The strikes came as heavy bombardment slammed into the neighbouring province of Idlib, held by jihadists and rebels.

At least nine non-combatants were killed on Friday in that shelling, said Abdel Rahman.
