[ToloNews] At least five civilians, including three children and two women, were killed after a mortar landed on civilian homes in the city of Qalat, the center of Zabul province in the south of Afghanistan, a health official said.
The incident happened during a clash between government forces and the Taliban ...Arabic for students... on the outskirts of Qalat on Thursday evening.
Nazir Harifal, a chief physician at Zabul Hospital, said 12 more were maimed in the incident.
He said that some of the maimed are at death's door.
Zabul police blamed the Taliban for the incident. Taliban so far has not commented on the incident.
Today the American B-52s attacked Taliban militants in the area of the provincial capital of Herat, which is in fact surrounded by the Taliban. It is believed that the US Air Force strikes were in response to the Taliban shelling of the UN office in Herat, as a result of which the police officers guarding the UN were injured (one of them died), as well as threats of the loss of the capital. On this occasion, UN officials condemned the attack and called on the Taliban to be more responsible and hinted that the Taliban are lying when they say they have nothing to do with it.
Herat Airport is under threat of loss.
A month ago, the Italians handed it over to the Afghan army.
It was occupied by Taliban fighters tonight, but the government says the militants were forced out of the airport.
Also during the fighting in Herat, the commander of the 1st brigade was captured along with four bodyguards. Apart from the Humvees, shooters and ammunition are still available.
In general, despite the pretentious statements about the imminent counteroffensive of the Afghan army, so far it is with great difficulty holding the provincial centers. The Taliban obviously has full operational initiative and can choose the place and time of launching new attacks, concentrating significant forces in key areas, which translates into an expansion of the sphere of control over small cities and rural areas, as a result of which more Afghans are already living in the territories controlled by the Taliban. than in government-controlled territory.
The diplomat noted that Washington is urging to find and punish the perpetrators of this crime. In addition, according to Thomas-Greenfield, the US government continues to call for an immediate end to clashes in the republic, which worsen the humanitarian situation and lead to the death of local residents, as well as an increase in the flow of refugees.
As reported by IA REGNUM , on July 30 the headquarters of the UN mission in Herat was fired upon from artillery and grenade launchers. As a result of the attack, an Afghan police officer was killed and several other security officials were injured.
Sources said that Taliban attacked a UN office in Herat and some outposts in the south of the city. Two security guards at the UN office were killed in the attack, sources from Herat said.
Dozens of families in the south of the city of Herat left their houses as clashes intensified there on Friday.
“People have left their houses… Taliban and other terrorist groups should realize that today’s Afghanistan is not the one it was 20 years ago,” said Abdul Qayum Rezaee, a Herat resident.
“Taliban should agree on peace if they are Muslims,” said Wali Mohammad, a Herat resident.
One of the frontlines was on the two sides of Malan Bridge in the south of the city.
Najibullah, an army soldier, said he is fighting against the Taliban on the frontline for the last two days. He said Taliban have stationed in people’s houses and that this impedes progress in their operations.
“Taliban are using people’s houses as a shield. We have not started our operation against the Taliban to avoid harm to civilians,” Najibullah said.
“We are not making progress to avoid harm to civilians. Taliban are attacking us using people’s houses and mosques,” said Mohammad Ismail, an army officer in Herat.
The public resistance force led by former mujahedeen leader and Jamiat-e-Islami’s senior member Mohammad Ismail Khan are also fighting against the Taliban in support of the Afghan forces.
“The enemy had an attack and we pushed their attack by imposing casualties to them. We saw some Taliban bodies and they were Pakistanis,” said Mohammad Amiri, a member of public resistance force.
“We are defending the country and the honor of the country. Our jihad against the Taliban will continue,” said Sayed Ahmad, a public resistance force member.
The government and the Taliban claim to have inflicted casualties on each other in Herat clashes, but no details are available in this respect.
Afghan special forces commanders say there are heavy street fighting and the Taliban are pushing, but the military is holding the city center and a number of key administrative buildings. By the evening of July 30, the battle was raging 100 meters from the Helmand provincial police headquarters. During the fighting, losses were suffered by both military and militants, as well as civilians who fell under the gunfire.
Commando squads are urgently deployed to the city by helicopters to contain Taliban attacks. Super-Tucano attack aircraft made a series of strikes in the area of the city.
For the Afghan government, these developments could be critical. If it succeeds in keeping Lashkar Gah, it will look like a defeat for the Taliban, which will somewhat destroy the picture of non-stop success created by the Taliban and show that even without direct US assistance, the Afghan military can defeat the Taliban. Therefore, by getting involved in the battles for Lashkar Gah, the Taliban are also at risk, since failure can cause some damage to their strategy. And he will also not be able to retreat without costs, since the authorities will declare that they have successfully repelled the Taliban offensive.
The government cannot retreat either, since the surrender of Lashkar Gakh could lead to a repetition of this scenario in other provincial centers, which would mean a collapse for the regime in Kabul. Therefore, the battles for the provincial capital of Helmand are unjustifiably important, although if you look at Lashkar Gah itself, this is a city with a population of about 50,000 people (plus 5K-10K refugees). Its significance in the current realities is rather moral and political.
In addition, the Taliban became completely insolent and began to infiltrate the suburbs of Kandahar, placing their checkpoints on secondary roads. For the last three days, special forces, with the support of attack helicopters, tried in every possible way to drive away their cities, and with the support of the US Air Force, which launched several airstrikes in the Kandahar region.
Also, the Americans bombed the Taliban positions at the Spin Boldak border crossing on the border with Pakistan, which the Taliban captured 2 weeks ago. The army has not yet been able to regain control over this checkpoint, which currently brings in hundreds of millions of dollars a year.
[LIBYAREVIEW] On Friday, festivities erupted in the al-Maya region of western Libya between a militia headed by Mohammed El-Far from al-Zawiya, and another headed by Muammar al-Dhawi al-Warshafani from Warshafana. According to eyewitnesses, medium and heavy weapons were used during the fighting. The festivities led to the use of mortars, with photos circulated on social media showing plumes of smoke rising from the middle of residential neighbourhoods. It was reported that the festivities reached the 27 Bridge vicinity, west of Tripoli ...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn... Last week, Libya’s Ministry of Interior announced that Security forces in Gasr bin Ghashir in southern Tripoli, arrested a man for putting ammunition for heavy and medium weapons up for sale.
In a statement, the MoI said that members of the Criminal Investigation Department questioned the man who admitted that he had kept the ammunition in his relative’s farm.
It added that the seized ammunition included four boxes of tank ammunition, each box containing two shells, as well as other four boxes of M-type ammunition. This is in addition to 28 artillery shells, ASPGs, a number of mortars, a bag containing four suspected mines, four missiles of an unknown type, one 106-caliber shell, and a missile battery.
The ministry also stated the ammunition was subsequently confiscated, and the farm’s owner was referred to the Public Prosecutors office.
[LIBYAREVIEW] After more than two years of closure, Libya’s 5+5 Joint Military Commission (JMC) announced on Friday, the immediate reopening of the Coastal Road linking eastern and western Libya.
Khairy al-Tamimi, a member of the JMC, said that "the Libyan Joint Military Commission assures all citizens using the Coastal Road that it will take all security measures professionally and completely impartially, to ensure the safety of citizens’ passage."
Al-Tamimi added that the JMC reiterated that it would prevent the movement of military convoys on the road between the Abu-Qrain Gate to the al-Talatin Gate, west of Sirte.
The JMC announced the assignment of a number of officers to monitor the situation, and called on the United Nations ...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks... Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to quickly take measures to ensure the presence of international observers on the ground. This is in order to contribute to supporting the Libyan monitoring mechanism.
It renewed its call for the Government of National Unity (GNU) to accelerate the appointment of a Defense Minister, and also pointed out the start of preparatory measures to remove mercenaries and imported muscle from Libya. It called on all countries to implement the Security Council resolutions related to the expulsion of mercenaries, and the outcomes of both Berlin Conferences.

But the Black Blockers never go one on one, but approach their target as a trained mob, some attacking while others scream and hold up cell phones to video tape the situation. Some are criminals, some are mentally unbalanced in stereotypical ways, some are true believers.
I'm also not your normal Rantburg poster, better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6. I have no problem with their vids and have no problem making a lil dumber if you know what I mean. They know where to go and not to go.
XYZ, I have enough sense to defend myself, I don't go out hunting trouble. But, know for sure if it finds me I will fight back. I'm not the typical Rantburg poster by any means I've been to jail plenty and have a pretty violent past myself.
I took that to be a reference to our diverse diversity here at the 'Burg - lots of people with different backgrounds, experience, and expertise. Seems whatever is going on, somebody here knows something about it, oftentimes quite a bit. It is what makes Rantburg University work. Also poetry.

Last week the NIA arrested two forces of Evil of the LeM, an offshoot of the JeM. The case was registered in the Gangyal District of Jammu in February this year. The case relates to a conspiracy by the terror group which is affiliated to the Jaish-e-Mohammad.
The group had planned on carrying on terror activities in Jammu and Kashmir with an intention of threatening the illusory sovereignty, integrity and security of India. Investigation has revealed that both the aforementioned arrested accused persons were co- conspirators and were involved in transportation of two separate consignments of illegal arms/ammunition from Bihar to Mohali and Ambala. After years of being urged to do so, the EU announced a sanctions regime that includes potential travel bans to the EU and asset freezes on entities linked to those sanctioned.
For the latest headlines, follow our Google News channel online or via the app.
According to a senior EU diplomat, Hungary was still opposed to the sanctions regime until late Thursday. Hungary has voiced its public support for Gebran Bassil, the Lebanese president’s son-in-law who was sanctioned by the US last year for acts of corruption.
The US has mainly been the sole enforcer of sanctions on Lebanese officials for acts of corruption or their ties to Hezbollah, a designated terrorist organization by Washington and several European and Gulf countries.
But France, which distinguishes between the Iran-backed group’s so-called military and political wings, has been the major obstacle in the face of a unified international policy for Beirut.
US-based sources familiar with the matter have said the US is working on announcing more sanctions on Lebanese politicians or members of their inner circles in the near future.

Syrian servicemen have managed to stabilize the situation in Daraa province where the militants of one of the anti-government groups earlier attacked the positions of government troops, Counter Admiral Vadim Kulit, deputy chief of the Russian Center for Reconciliation of the Opposing Parties in Syria reported at a briefing on Friday.
"The efforts of the armed forces of the Syrian Arab Republic have stabilized the situation in Daraa, and since July 30 a ceasefire has been established. Syria’s security structures reached agreements with the leaders of armed formations on settling the situation," he said.
The official reiterated that "in recent days the situation in the area of the populated locality of Daraa al-Balad of Daraa province has significantly aggravated where armed clashes between groups of illegal armed formations and Syria’s law enforcement have become more frequent."
Militants operating in the Idlib de-escalation zone controlled by Turkey have shelled Syrian army positions near Aleppo using a mortar leaving three servicemen wounded, Counter Admiral Vadim Kulit, deputy chief of the Russian Center for Reconciliation of the Opposing Parties in Syria reported at a briefing on Friday.
"On July 30, the militants of illegal armed formations acting on the territory of the Idlib de-escalation zone controlled by Turkey’s armed forces, opened mortar fire on the positions of Syria’s government forces. From the area of the populated locality of Kafer Hanni in Aleppo province, the militants fired two 120-mm mines on the positions of the Syrian Arab Republic’s armed forces in the area of the populated locality of Urum es-Sughra southwest of Aleppo. As a result of the shelling, three servicemen of the Syrian Arab Army sustained wounds," he said.
Over the past 24 hours, 32 instances of shelling on the part of the Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist group (outlawed in Russia) have been recorded in the Idlib de-escalation zone. Out of them, 19 attacks have been in Idlib province, six - in Latakia province, four attacks in Aleppo province and three attacks have been registered in Hama province.
On December 29, 2014, the Russian Supreme Court declared the islamist Jabhat al-Nusra group a terrorist organization. The extremist organization’s activities are outlawed in Russia.

You have to laugh at all those claiming there was a Hezbollah food convoy and fuel depot at Dabaa Airport that was targeted. Senior political official: "Iran is sowing violence and destruction in every corner of the region. Out of their eagerness to attack an Israeli target, they made it complicated and incriminated themselves by killing foreign civilians."
The firm managing an oil tanker attacked off Oman says two of its crew were killed in the assault.
Zodiac Maritime said Friday that the two crew members came from the United Kingdom and Romania. It said it knew of no other injuries among the crew.
The attack on Thursday night targeted Liberian-flagged oil tanker Mercer Street just northeast of the Omani island of Masirah.
The location is over 300 kilometers (185 miles) southeast of Oman's capital, Muscat.
London-based Zodiac Maritime, part of Israeli billionaire Eyal Ofer's Zodiac Group, earlier issued a statement naming the ship as the Liberian-flagged oil tanker Mercer Street. Zodiac Maritime described the ship as being Japanese owned.
Maybe the "Syrian" city the Israelis need to hit is Qom. Too bad we can't lend them a dozen B-52s for an old-fashioned ARCLIGHT strike. Those have a tendency to concentrate the mind something extraordinary.
