IED attack targets Wanlaweyn district official
WANLAWEYN, Somalia - At least 5 people were killed and 10 injured in an IED attack in Wanlaweyn district in the Lower Shabelle region on Saturday, Garowe Online reports.

According to local sources, two IED bombs were planted in Wanlaweyn district - 50 miles northwest of Mogadishu - targeting government forces and the Deputy District Councillor Nur Ahmed Nur.

Mr Nur who spoke to media said that he saw many dead bodies in the aftermath adding that the attack was an attempt on his life. Mr. Nur escaped unschathed. However, 5 people were killed and 10 injured in the two blasts. Wanlaweyn officials did not specify if the people that were killed where government forces.

Mr. Nur accused Al Shabaab of carrying the IED attacks in Wanlaweyn. Officials in the district said that they would release the official number of deaths in the attack.

Al Shabaab has yet to confirm if they had carried out the attack. The terrorist organization vacated the town of Wanlaweyn in 2012 after AMISOM and Somali Federal Government forces entered.

Gunmen Assassinate Judge outside Court in Eastern Libya
[An Nahar] Gunmen rubbed out an appeal court judge in the eastern Libyan town of Derna on Sunday, official news agency LANA cited the head of the court, Abdelaziz Trabelsi, as saying.

"Judge Mohammed Ibrahim Houidi, president of the criminal division, was killed on Sunday morning as he left the appeals court building in Derna," he said.

Trabelsi added that the attackers had fled immediately after the shooting, quoting witnesses.

Eastern Libya has been the scene of attacks targeting judges, soldiers and coppers who served under Qadaffy's regime.

Judge shot dead outside court in Libya
A judge was shot dead outside a court in the eastern Libyan city of Derna on Sunday, an official said, just weeks after courts resumed work there following the 2011 war.

Assailants killed Mohammed Houidi on Sunday morning as he came out of a court in the city.

“A car just stopped in front and gunmen fired at him,” Mansour Al Hasadi, a member of Libya’s national assembly from Derna, told Reuters. “He died immediately.”

Hasadi said courts in the city had only recently properly resumed work following disruption due to the 2011 war that ousted Muammar Gaddafi. As with elsewhere in the North African country, state security forces and courts there remain weak.

A relative of Houidi confirmed what Hasadi said and added: “The courts only started working again and this may have upset people who have openly been calling for Islamic law to be implemented in Derna.”

Residents say there have been several demonstrations, led by members of some Islamist groups, calling for Shariah law in recent months.

Derna, a coastal city overlooking the Mediterranean, is known across the region as a major recruitment centre for fighters who joined the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria.

Girls primary school attacked in Bahrain
That's what they're for, after all.
A group of saboteurs have targeted Bilad Al Qadeem Primary School for Girls, detonating a gas cylinder at its vicinity. The boundary wall of the school was damaged due to the impact of the explosion. The incident was reported to the security authorities for investigation. In a statement on Saturday, the Ministry of Education announced that 196 attacks on various schools have taken place during the last two years.

Meanwhile, the Director-General of the Capital Governorate Police has said that the security forces intervened to disperse rioters who had created chaos in Bilad Al Qadeem village on Saturday.

The thugs committed acts of sabotage, destroyed public property and blocked roads to disrupt traffic. The terrorists also attacked the security forces with firebombs, stones and iron rods, prompting riot police to disperse them in order to enforce the law and restore order, he added.

The director-general said that a number of saboteurs had been arrested.

LeJ claims twin attacks
[Pak Daily Times] The banned outfit Lashkar-e-Jhangvi
... a 'more violent' offshoot of Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistain. LeJ's purpose in life is to murder anyone who's not of utmost religious purity, starting with Shiites but including Brelvis, Ahmadis, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Rosicrucians, and just about anyone else you can think of. They are currently a wholly-owned subsidiary of al-Qaeda ...
(LeJ),has said it carried out attacks on a bus carrying women students and a hospital that killed at least 25.

The myrmidon outfit said a female jacket wallah struck the bus in Quetta, killing 14 women students. A follow up attack around 90 minutes later on a hospital treating survivors left at least 11 dead and led to a prolonged shootout between security forces and snuffies occupying part of the building. The standoff lasted for several hours and ended when security forces stormed the building, freeing 35 people who had been taken hostage, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar told news hounds on Saturday.

According to DIG (operations) Fayyaz Sumbul, the female suicide bomber is known to have boarded the bus in the guise of a university student. Abubakar Siddiq, a front man for LeJ, called newspaper offices in Quetta late Saturday to claim the killings. "The suicide kaboom on the bus was carried out by one of our sisters. She boarded the student bus and blew herself up," Siddiq said. "Then we carried out a second suicide attack at the hospital and our fighters killed several people. We did this because security forces killed our fighters and their wives in Kharotabad." Pak security forces on June 6 killed at least three snuffies and two women during a raid at a house in the Kharotabad neighbourhood of Quetta. Officials said they belonged to Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain, with whom LeJ has links.

FIRs against both the bombings, in which a total of 25 persons were killed, have been registered under the anti-terrorism act, on the complaint of SHO Thana Barori. The attacks came hours after a national monument linked to Pakistain's founding father Muhammad Ali Jinnah was destroyed by separatist snuffies in Ziarat, 80 kilometres southeast of Quetta. Quetta is a flashpoint for sectarian violence. A giant bomb planted in a water tanker being towed by a tractor killed 90 Hazaras in February, while another suicide kaboom at a snooker club in January killed 92 others. Both were claimed by LeJ.

There was fury in the Pak press on Sunday, both at the perpetrators and the security forces for failing to prevent the third major atrocity in Quetta in six months.

The bus targeted in Saturday's attack was from Sardar Bahadur Khan Women's University, which is located close to a Hazara neighbourhood in Quetta, and many Hazaras are students.

#1  I can't think of many things more depraved than murdering an entire busload of young women. There are things worse: babies in their cribs, or elementary school kids in their classrooms. But not that many.

There's a harrumph-harrumph editorial in Dawn (on the Burg's page 4), and I'm sure there are others here and there in the Pak press. But by next week it will be essentially forgotten, just one of an unending stream of atrocity, the perpetrators of which are seldom caught, and when caught seldom convicted, and when sentenced rarely executed. Maybe never. Omar Saeed Sheikh, as far as I know, is still alive and well, and I'd guess comfortably housed.

Attack on Rangers post at Kati Pahari
[Dawn] A cracker attack on a Rangers post followed by a remote-controlled kaboom near Kati Pahari on Saturday killed a former policeman and left more than a dozen others including personnel of the paramilitary force, coppers and a news hound of a private TV channel injured, officials said.

They suspected that some motorcyclists hurled the cracker at the Rangers post in the Kati Pahari area that caused a huge bang in the second half of the day attracting residents, media teams and law-enforcers -- the potential victims of a second and much more powerful kaboom.

"Only 10 minutes after the cracker blast, a bomb planted near the Rangers post went off," said SP Orangi Town Chaudary Asad Ali. "The cracker in fact did not cause any injury or major damage. It was the second attack that caused injuries to people including coppers, Rangers personnel and residents who had gathered there after the cracker attack."

Considering the past trend, he said, the first attack seemed a trap set to attract people -- mainly officials of the law-enforcement agencies -- close to the bomb planted in a cement block very close to the Rangers post near Kati Pahari.

Following the kaboom, fear gripped the neighbourhood that houses a number of roadside shops, eateries and hundreds of residential units. Ambulances were seen rushing the injured to a nearby private health facility as well as to the Abbassi Shaheed Hospital and Civil Hospital Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
The officials said that the victims included five Rangers personnel and three coppers who were cordoning off the area after the first kaboom. They said at least three of them who sustained multiple and serious wounds were shifted to operating theatres for surgeries.

"One of the injured who was brought here later died. He has been identified as Mohammad Yousuf in his 40s," said an official at the medico-legal section of the Abbassi Shaheed Hospital. He added that the identity of the other victims had not been ascertained so far. About the injuries, he said the victims suffered multiple wounds, including wounds in their limbs, abdomens and chests, indicating that the bomb also carried ball bearings.

The Orangi Town SP said the dear departed Mohammad Yousuf was actually a former policeman who had been dismissed from service. He said he lived in the area close to the Rangers post. He came out of his home after the first attack and was standing among other people when the bomb went kaboom!, he added.

Among the victims also included a CNBC Pakistain journalist, Zainuddin, who was reporting the news of the first attack, the officer said. Most of the injured were stable and released after the initial treatment, he said.

"The cracker carried a 300 milligram explosive that caused a huge noise," said an official at the Sindh police's bomb disposal unit that examined both the blast sites.

"The second attack was carried out through a locally-made and remote-controlled IED (improvised bomb), which was concealed in a cement block just a few yards from the Rangers post," the official said.

"The bomb weighed around two kilograms," he said.

The police Sherlocks said it was a little early to arrive at any conclusion about 'the group behind the twin attacks', but taking into account past trend of attacks they sounded very much sure that the job was executed by one of the banned myrmidon outfits.

"The expertise to develop such kind of bomb and then conceal in that way is enjoyed by banned outfits that are associated with the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain one way or the other," said Raja Umer Khattab of the CID's counter-terrorism unit. "Their training is different and they very much hold the quite similar skills. It will be a little early to hold any particular group responsible for the attacks but definitely the job is carried out by any of these banned groups," he said.

Series of bombings kills 15 in Iraq

and other Iraqi cities that left 15 dead and maimed dozens Sunday.

The latest blast hit a coffee shop in a Shiite Mohammedan district in southeastern Storied Baghdad, killing four people and wounding 10, police said. Another 11 people were killed and at least 70 were maimed in five boom-mobileings south of Storied Baghdad, most of them also in the Shiite districts of Mahawil, Mahmoudiya, Kut, Basra and Aziziya, authorities said.

Sunday's attacks came six days after another rash of bombings in northern Iraq that killed nearly 60 people, from police in the northern city of djinn-infested Mosul to shoppers at a vegetable market in Storied Baghdad.

Huge blast at Mezzeh military airport in Damascus
[BBC.CO.UK] A huge blast has been reported in the western Mezzeh suburb of the Syrian capital Damascus.

Syrian state TV said the blast was caused by "a terrorist attempt to target Mezzeh military airport".

Activist groups say the airport was the source of a huge kaboom that was heard throughout most of the capital.

Mezzeh military airport is an important strategic installation and plays a significant role in distributing the government's military supplies.

Activists said a big fire was raging inside the airport and that ambulances were heading to the scene.

The UK-based activist group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), said that a boom-mobile had been detonated targeting a military checkpoint near the airport.

Mezzeh military airport is an important buffer between several outlying suburbs to the south-west, which are largely in rebel hands, and the core of the city including the nearby presidential palace, the BBC's Jim Muir reports from Beirut.

In recent weeks, government forces have pushed the rebels back from many of the suburbs ringing the capital.

If the airport was the target of a boom-mobileing, it will not bring the rebels any closer to over-running the city centre, which at present they are not in a position to do, our correspondent adds.

In April, state media reported that Syrian Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi survived a car kaboom in the same district.

Last month, Syria accused Israel of launching rocket attacks on a military facility near Damascus and on a shipment of missiles near the Lebanese border.

4 Dead, Including 2 from Jaafar Clan, as Car Comes under Fire in Arsal Outskirts
[An Nahar] Four people were killed, including two members of the Jaafar clan, when their car came under gunfire in Arsal's barren mountains, state-run National News Agency reported.

The person or persons unknown rubbed out "two members of the Jaafar family, an Amhaz family member and a Turk" in an ambush while they were smuggling fuel through the Qaa area, a security source told Agence La Belle France Presse, asking not to be named.

He had initially identified the victims as four Lebanese and said a fifth man was seriously maimed.

The incident occurred in an agricultural part of Qaa, home to a predominantly Sunni population.

Tensions were running high in the wake of the incident, the source said, with armed members of the Jaafar family gathering around five kilometers from the town of Arsal.

The National News Agency said the four were rubbed out while inside a Cherokee vehicle in the Rafeq valley in the barren mountains of the town of Ras Baalbek, identifying them as Ali Karami Jaafar, Mohammed Ali Ahmed Jaafar, Hussein Sharif Amhaz and Ali Haidar, "a Turkish national whose mother is from the Lebanese family of Seifeddine and who is a resident of the town of al-Nabi Othman."

Voice of Leb radio (93.3) said gunfire erupted in the Bekaa town of al-Labweh "as a response to the crime committed against one of the town's residents in the region's barren mountains."

For its part, Voice of Leb radio (100.5) said the security situation deteriorated around the town of Arsal after four members of the Jaafar clan were killed in "an ambush by a group of Arsal residents."

"Army units went on full alert at all military bases and checkpoints in the Bekaa as a precaution against any repercussions from the ambush against the Jaafar family," the radio station said.

"The intersections of the town of al-Labweh have been closed," al-Jadeed television reported.

LBCI television said the four were killed in "Wadi Rafeq, a border area between al-Qaa's barren mountains and Ras Baalbek."

"As the Lebanese army went through Arsal's barren mountains to recover the bodies, it was surprised with the presence of around 200 gunnies in the area, which prompted it to withdraw for a while and call in reinforcements," MTV reported.
