Africa Horn
Al-Shabaab commander surrenders to Somalia forces
[Garowe] A senior al-Shabaab
...... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
commander in Somalia has surrendered to the National Intelligence Security Agency [NISA] forces in Somalia, just before the activation of the second phase of operations against the group, an indication of huge strides made by the security forces in liberating the country.
"Please don't kill me!"
Abdirahman Macalin Ahmed alias Abu Sa'eed or Sharif has been a member of the group since its inception in 2006, holding various positions before his decision to quit on Sunday. He joins hundreds of people who have quit the group which preaches violent mostly peaceful ideology in the Horn of Africa nation.

Preliminary investigations show Ahmed has held a number of strategic positions in the al-Qaeda-linked group, key among them being head of al-Shabaab's Banadir Regional Court, General head of al-Shabaab's Court, and advisor to the late leader Ahmed Godane who was killed in a US-led Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
in 2014.

Ahmed also served as head of extortion collection in the Lower Shabelle region and his decision to down tools has been termed as "most important victory for Somali forces" as they enter the crucial phase in the elimination of the group. al-Shabaab has a huge presence in central and southern regions but has lately lost in a number of fronts.

His surrender comes just days after the US Africa Command fired drones at the group's headquarters in Jilib town, injuring Osman Mohammed Abdi alias Moallim Osman, the man in charge of external operations within the group. Moalim is said to be unconscious according to multiple sources.

SNA, ATMIS forces kill several militants involved in an attack on UPDF base at Buulo Mareer
[GoobjoogNews] The Somali National Army in a joint operation with ATMIS forces have conducted an operation against the al-Shabaab
...... an Islamic infestation centering on Somalia attempting to metastasize into Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and similar places, all ofwhich have enough problems without them...
bandidos gunnies who were involved in the attack at a Forward Operating Base (FOB) manned by the Ugandan Army in Bulo Mareer.

ATMIS, through is twitter account said a number of the bandidos gunnies were killed in the joint operation and that multiple weapons were also retrieved.

"ATMIS and SNA forces successfully pursued fleeing al-Shabaab bully boyz involved in the ATMIS FOB attack in Buulo Mareer. A substantial number of the bully boyz have been eliminated. The Joint force also retrieved multiple weapons looted from the FOB. ATMIS remains committed to fighting terrorism and will continue working closely with the Federal Government of Somalia, Federal Member States and international partners to secure Somalia."

Al-Shabaab bandidos gunnies early Friday attacked and overran the base killing an unconfirmed number of UPDF soldiers and taking others hostage.
Multiple sources have confirmed that the UPDF contingent is yet to return to Bulo Marer FOB, with some reports indicating that even as late as Sunday, al-Shabaab
...... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
was in control. al-Shabaab's video purportedly from the base on Sunday showed some dead bodies inside and at the entrance of the base.
So far, no official number of casualties has been released but UPDF Spokesperson Brigadier General Felix Kulaigye confirmed to VOA Somali that a company of 221 soldiers was stationed at the base. al-Shabaab claimed that over 137 soldiers were killed.

Somali sources told VOA that on the day of the attack, May 26, between 100 to 120 soldiers made it to another Ugandan military base in Golweyn village, about seven kilometers east of Bulo Marer. About a dozen soldiers reportedly arrived in Golweyn on May 27, with UPDF now confirming that a number of them were taken hostage by al-Shabaab.

Again Somali sources believe at least 3 soldiers may have been captured. Mahad Karate, the al-Shabaab commander in charge of taxation and finance, claimed over 200 soldiers were killed but Kulaigye says al-Shabaab is exaggerating the numbers.

US military targets Al-Shabaab militants behind attack on AU base in Somalia
[Garowe] The US Africa Command activated a series of Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
s in southern Somalia, with the main focus being outside the vicinity of Bulo Marer, a town where al-Shabaab
...... the personification of Somali state failure...
gunnies initiated dawn attacks mainly targeting the Uganda People's Defense Forces [UPDF] serving in the peacekeeping mission.

In a statement, the US Army said the airstrike was in support of the "federal and African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
Transition Mission troops" who were in an operation against al-Shabaab. The ground troops from ATMIS and the Somali army have been pursuing gunnies who waged an assault against the Ugandan contingent.

"The strike destroyed weapons and equipment unlawfully taken by al-Shabaab fighters," the statement revealed, adding that "the command’s initial assessment is that no civilians were maimed or killed". This was the second airstrike against the al-Shabaab in seven days by the US army.

Last week, the command targeted al-Shabaab headquarters in Jilib town, seriously injuring Osman Mohammed Abdi alias Moallim Osman, the group's commander for external operations. Moalim, who was declared "unconscious", is usually the person who organizes raids against foreign troops and outside the country.

U.S. Africa Command takes great measures to prevent civilian casualties. Protecting civilians remains a vital part of the command’s operations to promote a more secure and stable Africa, the command added in the statement which was published on Saturday.

Uganda has dispatched Lt. General Mayanga Muhanga, the Land Forces Commander to Somalia to assess the level of damage by al-Shabaab. Initial reports show the gunnies targeted Uganda Battle Group 38 which reported to Somalia last month for ATMIS duties in Bulo Marer.

While ATMIS is yet to disclose the number of casualties, several military sources place it between 50 and 137 as claimed by al-Shabaab hard boys. Several other soldiers were taken into captivity, sources further said. al-Shabaab published photos of purported UPDF soldiers being held captive.

New truce, new battles in Sudan as civilians remain trapped
[The Nation (Pak)] Fighting flared again in Sudan on Tuesday despite the latest ceasefire pledges of the two warring generals that are meant to allow desperately needed aid to reach besieged civilians. Both the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces formally agreed late on Monday to extend by five days a US and Saudi-brokered humanitarian truce
..The purposes of a truce are twofold: 1.) bring up more arms, ammunition, and reinforcements; and 2.) get the enemy to relax his vigilance. A truce is not the same thing as a ceasefire, and a ceasefire doesn't mean you have to stop shooting...
that was frequently violated over the past week.

Since the extension was announced, more fighting was reported by residents. including "festivities with various kinds of weapons in southern Khartoum" and fighting in Nyala in the state of South Darfur.

The army leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his former deputy, paramilitary RSF commander Mohammed Hamdan Daglo, again accused each other of violating the truce and claimed to only be responding to enemy aggression.

Libyan embassy in Khartoum attacked and looted - ministry
[AFRICANEWS] Libya's foreign ministry on Tuesday condemned an attack on its embassy in the Sudanese capital Khartoum, whose buildings were ransacked and looted.

"denounced the assault and looting" of the Libyan embassy building in Khartoum, whose staff had been evacuated due to the violence, according to a ministry statement.

Expressing its "deep regret and displeasure" at such acts, the Libyan ministry "calls on the parties to the conflict in Sudan to reject violence (....) and to protect diplomatic representations", in the spirit of the Vienna Convention governing diplomatic relations between States, which "stipulates the obligation to protect embassies and diplomatic missions".

In its statement, Libya stressed its "attachment" to the stability of Sudan and its people, but reiterated its condemnation of the attacks on the headquarters of diplomatic missions in the Sudanese capital.

Last Thursday, the Libyan ministry deplored an attack on the offices of the Libyan military attaché in Khartoum, calling for those responsible for this "criminal act" to be "identified and prosecuted".

Somalia’s al Shabaab group attacked a military base on the outskirts of a town in the center of the country, leading to at least 17 deaths

peacekeeping mission in Bulamarer, 130 km (80 miles) southwest of the capital.

"I have seen 17 dead people including the attackers and the attacked. The fighting has moved into the forest. The town is calm now and under government control," Hussein Nur, a resident of Masagawa, told Rooters by phone.

Captain Abdullahi Mohammed, a military officer in Masagawa, confirmed the attack and said 12 al-Shabaab fighters had died, but he did not know how many troops were dead.

"Fierce fighting went on for hours on the edge of the town. So far, I know we lost soldiers but I have no exact figure. We repulsed al-Shabaab and now we are pursuing them in the forest,"Mohammed told Rooters.

The Somalia National Army said on Twitter it had prevented an attack on the town itself, and killed al-Shabaab fighters, but did not say how many.

Al Qaeda-linked al-Shabaab has been fighting since 2006 to topple Somalia’s central government and establish its own rule based on its strict interpretation of Islamic Sharia law. It has launched significant attacks against hotels, military bases and government establishments in despite a relatively successful government push back.

The group said in a statement it had killed 73 soldiers in the attack, targeting those who had returned from training in Eritrea
...is run by the People's Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ), with about the amounts of democracy and justice you'd expect from a party with that name. National elections have been periodically scheduled and cancelled; none have ever been held in the country. Al-Shabaab tends to give casualty figures in attacks that differ from those issued by the authorities.

Africa North
Libya hands down death sentences to Islamic State fighters
[AFRICANEWS] A Libyan court on Monday condemned to death 35 jihadists convicted of fighting with the Islamic State group in the north African country during chaos that followed Muammar Gadhafi's fall, AFP journalists in the court said.

This was the first group of 320 alleged IS jihadists to be tried and sentenced.

IS had captured the central coast city of Sirte in 2015, setting up a stronghold before being driven out the following year by forces loyal to the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord in power at the time.

Thirteen other accused were sentenced to life in prison, after the trial that began last August in the western city of Misrata, the AFP journalists said.

The accused were Palestinian, Sudanese and Libyan. All had been in custody since December 2016 and were convicted of joining a terrorist group, as well as murder.

Some others were acquitted but exactly how many was not clear.

In addition, the court sentenced three minors to 10 years in prison each, said lawyer Lotfi Mohaychem, who represented families of anti-IS fighters killed in the battle for Sirte.

The suspects appeared in the dock clad in blue prison overalls, bearded and with shaven heads.

Relatives of those killed in the Sirte battle filled the packed the courtroom.

"As lawyers for the victims' families we see the verdict of the court as very satisfying and very just," Mohaychem said. "The court sentenced those whose guilt was demonstrated and acquitted those against whom there was insufficient evidence."

When the verdicts were read, cries of joy and applause filled the room along with shouts of, "God is greatest" and, "The blood of the martyrs has not been spilled in vain".

At least 17 civilians killed by extremist rebels in eastern Congo
[AFRICANEWS] At least 17 people were killed by krazed killer rebels in eastern Congo's North Kivu province, local authorities said.

...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. group — in the Bambuba-kisiki area in Beni territory, said Sabiti Njiamoja, a deputy to the local governor, on Monday.

"We buried 10 bodies on Sunday. The victims are civilians killed by ADF between Thursday and Friday in Kainana. Seven others were found on Monday," he said.

Conflict has been simmering for decades in eastern Congo, where more than 120 gangs are fighting. Most are vying for land and control of mines with valuable minerals, while some groups are trying to protect their communities.

Since last April, ADF attacks have killed at least 370 civilians and several hundred people have been kidnapped, including a significant number of children, according to the UN. The group also extended its area of operations to Goma and into the neighboring Ituri province.

In March, the group grabbed credit for killing more than 35 people and wounding dozens in Mukondi village, also in North Kivu province.

The fighting is exacerbating eastern Congo's dire humanitarian crisis. Almost 6 million people are internally displaced in Congo with more than 450,000 displaced in North Kivu province. Hundreds of thousands are facing extreme food insecurity, and disease is spreading, aid groups say.

India-Pakistan
Imran will be tried in military courts: Rana Sana
[The Nation (Pak)] Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah on Tuesday said PTI Chairman Imran Khan will be tried in a military court for the events of May 9 when violence erupted like lava from a volcano following his arrest and military installations came under attack.

At least eight people were killed, as many as 290 were maimed, and over 1,900 enraged protesters were rounded up in running battles with law enforcers across the country on May 9 when an accountability court in Islamabad handed over the custody of Imran to NAB in connection with the Al Qadir Trust case.

The protesters had also stormed the residence of the Corps Commander in Lahore, also called Jinnah House and tore down a gate of General Headquarters in Rawalpindi.

The riots had elicited a strong reaction from the government and military with vows of taking action against the culprits, leading to an ongoing crackdown against those involved.

Talking with a news channel, Sanaullah accused Imran of personally carrying out the planning of the attacks on military installations before his arrest on the day, adding that there was evidence to prove the claim as well.

When asked if Imran would be tried in the military court, Sanaullah said: "Absolutely, why shouldn’t he? The programme that he made to target the military installations and then had it executed, in my understanding absolutely is a case of a military court." The interior minister accused the PTI chief of personally orchestrating the May 9 riots.

"They (PTI supporters) chanted a slogan that ’Imran Khan
...aka The Great Khan, who is the lightweight's lightweight...
is our red line’, and the planning and preparation were done on Imran Khan’s initiative and instigation.

"He carried it all out. He is the architect of all this discord," adding that there was evidence present to back the accusation as well. "The evidence is documented, it is in tweets and his messages," he added.

When asked how Imran was able to communicate with his party leaders even from jail, the interior minister replied: "All this planning was decided before he went to jail that ’who will do what and where. And when he is arrested, what would be the strategy and duties’. All of this was decided." The interior minister also ruled out talks with the PTI.

Sanaullah’s remarks come a day after Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said that there was no decision yet on Imran’s trial under the Army Act, adding, however, that he could not "rule out" such a possibility.

Iraqi, Kurdish forces conduct joint anti-ISIS operations
27 May
[Rudaw] The Iraqi army and Peshmerga forces on Saturday launched a joint operation targeting remnants of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) in disputed areas located near the southern reaches of the Kurdistan Region, a Peshmerga commander told Rudaw.

The operation is taking place in Garmiyan as well as the districts of Khanaqin and Tuz Khurmatu, territories that are claimed by both Erbil and Baghdad.

"We began from the fronts of Qorichai and Palkana and are heading towards Ghara. The other brigades are continuing their part of the operation on their respective fronts," Colonel Hakim Sati, commander of the Peshmerga’s 17th brigade, told Rudaw.

ISIS seized control of swathes of land in Iraq in 2014. The group was declared territorially defeated in 2017 but it continues to carry out bombings, hit-and-run attacks, and abductions across several provinces, especially in the disputed areas where there is a security vacuum in the gaps between federal and regional forces.

To secure the disputed territories that stretch across several provinces including Kirkuk,
... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time...
Salahaddin, and Diyala, the Iraqi army and Peshmerga formed joint brigades. Their progress was stalled because of political turmoil after the last election and lack of a budget. The 2023 budget bill includes funds for the joint brigades.

According to Sati, the purpose of Saturday’s campaign is to tighten security and prevent ISIS from moving around unimpeded.

"The objectives of this operation are the following: first, to cleanse the area and drive out ISIS. Second, to restore law and order to the area," he said.

His brigade found several ISIS fighters and ammunition.

Last year, Iraqi forces killed over 200 ISIS fighters, according to figures from the army.

Israeli father of two killed in northern West Bank terror shooting
[IsraelTimes] Drive-by attack occurs near settlement of Hermesh, west of Jenin; military launches manhunt; victim named as Meir Tamari, 32

An Israeli man was shot and killed in a shooting attack near the settlement of Hermesh in the northern West Bank on Tuesday, the military and medics said.

According to local authorities, the victim, later named as 32-year-old Meir Tamari, came under fire from a passing vehicle on a road near the settlement of Hermesh, west of Jenin. He continued driving until he reached the community, where he was treated by medics.

The Magen David Adom ambulance service said Tamari, a civilian, was treated at death's door at the entrance to the settlement, after suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. A helicopter was dispatched to the scene to take the victim to Hillel Yaffe Hospital in Hadera, where he was later declared dead.

The Israel Defense Forces said troops launched a manhunt for the button men, closing off several roads in the area.

In a statement carried by Paleostinian media, the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades terror group, loosely linked to the Paleostinian Authority’s ruling Fatah party, grabbed credit for the deadly attack.

"We affirm that this operation and others will not be the final response to our deaders," the statement read.

Tamari had moved to Hermesh some four years ago after getting married to Tal, a resident of the West Bank settlement, the Samaria regional council said. He is survived by his wife and two young children, aged one and three.

[IsraelTimes] IDF says troops returned fire at source of shooting on Route 60 highway, near Kiryat Arba settlement

A military ambulance was targeted in a shooting attack near the southern West Bank settlement of Kiryat Arba late Monday night, the Israel Defense Forces said.

The IDF said the ambulance and other troops were conducting routine security operations on the Route 60 highway near Hebron.

"IDF soldiers responded with live fire toward the source of the shooting," the military said.

The ambulance was damaged after being hit by at least two bullets.

No soldiers were hurt in the attack, the IDF said.

The IDF said troops were scanning the area for suspects.

The attack came a day after Paleostinian bandidos turbans shot up a settlement in the northern West Bank and a town in Israel bordering the security barrier, causing slight damage. The IDF said it had launched a manhunt for the suspects behind the shooting attack. A local wing of the Paleostinian Islamic Jihad

IDF: Palestinian killed after infiltrating West Bank settlement synagogue with knife
26 May
[IsraelTimes] Man shot at entrance to house of worship as community gathered for morning prayers on the Shavuot festival; residents told to remain indoors as IDF searches area

A Paleostinian man was shot and killed Friday by a member of a local security team after infiltrating into the Teneh Omarim settlement and trying to stab an Israeli at the entrance to the community synagogue, the military said.

There were no reports of Israeli casualties in the incident that came as residents of the southern West Bank settlement were gathered for morning prayers on the Shavuot festival.

Video from the scene showed the man sliding under the community gate and then walking into the community with what appears to be a knife in his hand.

Magen David Adom medics confirmed the death of the alleged attacker at the scene.

The Israeli military sent forces to the area as an infiltration alert sounded in the community, and was carrying out searches in the area south of the West Bank city of Hebron.

The military’s Home Front Command ordered residents of the community to remain in their homes and lock doors and windows until further notice. It lifted the warning after about two hours.

According to an initial investigation, the assailant crawled under the main gate of the community while the guard was on patrol. He then walked several hundred meters into the settlement, passing a crowded playground.

He was then spotted by a resident who alerted security. One of the members of the security team intercepted him as he approached the synagogue and opened fire, killing him.

Palestinians say 4 hurt by gunfire in West Bank clashes with settlers
26 May
[IsraelTimes] Video from scene shows several Paleostinian vehicles set on fire north of Ramallah; IDF says settlers opened fire during ’violent mostly peaceful friction’

At least four Paleostinians were maimed by gunfire during festivities with settlers north of Ramallah in the West Bank, Paleostinian media reported Friday.

Paleostinian reports said four people were hit by the gunfire, including one person at death's door with a bullet wound to the head.

Videos posted to social media showed fields and several vehicles apparently set on fire by the settlers.

Witnesses told the Paleostinian Wafa news agency that five vehicles and 270 bales of straw were torched.

A military spokesperson told The Times of Israel that troops were dispatched to the area following reports of "violent mostly peaceful friction" between settlers and Paleostinians near the Adei Ad settlement.

The spokesperson said settlers had opened fire during the festivities, and that both sides were hurling stones.

"As a result of the violent mostly peaceful friction, a number of Paleostinians and Israeli civilians were maimed," the spokesperson said, adding that the Israel Defense Forces had received reports of Paleostinian-owned cars being set on fire.

IDF troops along with coppers used riot dispersal means and live fire in the air to eventually disperse the sides, the spokesperson said.

Israel Police launched an investigation into the violence.

It was the second reported incident of festivities between settlers and Paleostinians this week.

Several Paleostinians and an Israeli settler were hurt Wednesday during festivities near the northern West Bank outpost of Homesh, in violence that erupted after European officials toured the area.

According to the Yesh Din rights group, several hard boy settlers attacked Paleostinians in the village of Burqa and set fire to homes. Video from Burqa showed residents trying to extinguish the blazes.

Yesh Din said the incident came after European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
diplomats visited the area around Homesh, a former outpost evacuated in 2005 after the High Court found it was built partly on private Paleostinian land belonging to residents of Burqa.

The IDF did not respond to requests for comment on the Wednesday festivities.

Last week, the army lifted an order forbidding civilians from entering the site of the former settlement, which right-wing groups say they hope to resettle.

The Peace Now anti-settlement watchdog, which along with Yesh Din and Emek Shaveh led the tour for the diplomats, denounced the violence in Burqa as a "Dire Revenge operation" by settlers.
