Afghanistan
Iran Exchanges Heavy Gunfire with Taliban on Afghan Border, Escalating Tensions over Water Rights
The Taliban and Iran exchanged heavy gunfire Saturday on the Iranian border with Afghanistan, killing and wounding troops while sharply escalating rising tensions between the two countries amid a dispute over water rights.

Iran's state-run IRNA news agency quoted the country's deputy police chief, Gen. Qassem Rezaei, accusing the Taliban of opening fire first Saturday morning on the border of Iran’s Sistan and Baluchestan province and the Afghan province of Nimroz. IRNA said Iran inflicted “heavy casualties and serious damage."

From the Taliban's view, Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman Abdul Nafi Takor accused Iran of shooting first. Takor said the firefight killed two people, one from each country, and wounded others. He described the situation as now being under control.

IRNA, quoting Iranian police, said two border guards had been killed. However, that number may be higher. The semiofficial, English-language newspaper Tehran Times said the fighting killed three Iranian border guards. IRNA said the Milak border crossing with Afghanistan, a major trade route, was closed until further notice over the gunfight.

“The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan considers dialogue to be a reasonable way for any problem,” Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman Enayatullah Khawarazmi said in a statement. “Making excuses for war and negative actions is not in the interest of any of the parties.”
"Except when WE do it"
The advocacy group HalVash, which reports on issues affecting the Baluch people in the province of Sistan and Baluchestan, quoted residents in the area saying the fighting took place near the Kang district of Nimroz. It said some people in the area had fled the violence.

Videos posted online, purportedly from the area, included the crackle of machine gun fire in the distance. HalVash later posted an image of what appeared to be the remains of a mortar round, saying that “heavy weapons and mortars are being used.”

Later videos from HalVash purported to show Iranian forces firing a mortar, as well as Taliban troops firing American-made machine guns at an Iranian border post. Other Taliban fighters drove armored vehicles likely left behind by NATO forces.

Sudan's Burhan suspends his foreign minister
[SUDANTRIBUNE] The Head of the Sovereign Council Sudanese Army Commander General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has suspended Foreign Minister Ali al-Sadiq over criticism of his failure to fulfil his duties following the armed conflict with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The minister’s suspension comes days after the outbreak of war with the RSF on April 15, several sources confirmed to Sudan Tribune.

Reports indicate that Burhan has appointed Mohammed Osman al-Hadi, a former ambassador and director of the office of former foreign minister and Islamist leader Ali Karti, to assume the ministerial responsibilities.

Supporters of the former regime launched a campaign criticizing Sadiq for his poor performance during the war.

Following the campaign, an army commander informed the minister of his activity freeze in a phone call on April 18. On April 25, al-Burhan appointed Undersecretary Daffallah Elhag Ali as his envoy to convey messages to several regional leaders.

Multiple sources indicate that al-Sadiq had a conflict with Ali, who coordinated various direct missions with two Sovereign Council members, Ali Jaber and Shams al-Din Kabbashi, responsible for coordinating with ministers and government officials.

Within two days of the war’s outbreak, the suspended foreign minister failed to establish direct contact with the head of the Sovereign Council, raising concerns among the military that the commander of the Rapid Support Forces might influence him.

The carrier diplomat was appointed acting foreign minister after the coup d’état of October 25, 2021. Also, the military leaders reintegrated all the Islamists fired by the Hamdok government.

#1  The battle lines drawn are now becoming clearer. If Osman al-Hadi is to become Foreign Minister, then as an associate of Ali Karti the war must be one that pits the Center (Nile Arabs) against the periphery (Muslim minorities).
In the 1990s Ali Ahmed Karti (1953-) was commander of the vicious Popular Defense Forces, under Dictator Bashir. The PDF served as an arm of the Islamist National Islamic Front. Karti then served as Foreign Minister from 2010 to 2015. On the side, Karti is a Sudanese businessman who bought the Friendship Hotel in Khartoum for $85 million.(Wiki). In March 2020 the Sudanese prosecutor's office ordered his arrest for his role in the 1989 coup d'état which brought Omar al-Bashir to power. He was never tried.
Conclusion: If you want to talk about a Sudanese 'swamp.' Karti and al-Hadi are two of its primary creatures.

Uganda Confirms Casualties among Country's Soldiers in Somali Attack
Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni said late on Sunday there had been casualties during an attack by Somalia's Islamist group al Shabaab on a military base manned by Ugandan peacekeepers in the Horn of African country on Friday.

Museveni did not say how many soldiers were killed or wounded but it was the first official admission of losses in the attack among the Ugandan troops who are serving in the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).

"Condolences to the country and the families of those who died," Museveni said in a statement, adding the country's military had set up a panel to investigate what happened.

Al Shabaab has since 2006 has been fighting to topple Somalia's Western-backed government and establish its own rule based on its own strict interpretation of Islamic law.

Museveni said during the attack "some of the soldiers there did not perform as expected and panicked, which disorganized them and the al Shabaab took advantage of that to overrun the base and destroy some of the equipment."

The assailants numbered about 800 and during the attack the Ugandan troops were forced to withdraw to a nearby base, about nine kilometers away, he said.

Al Shabaab fighters targeted the base early on Friday in Bulamarer, 130 km (80 miles) southwest of the capital Mogadishu.

Al Shabaab said in a statement at the time that it had carried out suicide bomb attacks and killed 137 soldiers at the base.

There was no immediate official confirmation of the casualties. Al Shabaab tends to give casualty figures in attacks that differ from those issued by the authorities.

ATMIS has so far not said how many troops were killed or wounded in the attack.

The peacekeeping mission has been in Somalia since 2007 and helps to defend Somalia's central government.

Land Mine Kills Two Children as Coalition Continues to Prevent Mine Clearance Operations in Yemen
by Emad Almarshahi

At least two children were killed and two other men were wounded on Saturday when a landmine went off in Jawf province.

Local sources confirmed that the landmine was left by the Saudi-led coalition forces in al-Maslub district.

Yemen is witnessing a significant increase in the number of victims of the remnants of war as a result of the expansion of areas infested with explosive remnants. The coalition continues to prevent the entry of detectors, in light of the United Nations’ evasion of its duty to save Yemenis from these remnants.

Islah Party sends reinforcements to Hadhramaut region as internal conflict continues
by Emad Almarshahi

The Islah Party sent on Sunday large military reinforcements to the oil-rich province of Hadhramaut, eastern Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
.

This coincides with the Saudi-led coalition’s arrangements to declare the province an independent region amid expectations of a military confrontation.

According to southern media, a military convoy comprising many patrols and vehicles of the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) moved from the city of Ma’rib via al-Khasha’a Road on its way to Hadhramaut Valley.

Earlier, the Islah party mobilized its armed factions in Marib and Jawf provinces, known as the "Popular Resistance®," under the name "Restoring Unity," referring to its arrangement for a battle against the STC.

The step also coincides with arrangements in Riyadh to announce the outcomes of the agreement of the "Hadhrami forces" that participated in the past days negotiations, which the Islah party participated in and included the declaration of Hadhramaut as an independent region.

Moves to Sever Alliance With Islah Forces in Favor of Dera al-Watan Fighters

by Emad AlmarshahiSaudi Arabia took its first steps towards severing its alliance with the Islah party in Hadhramaut, stripping the party of all its military and political powers.

Saudi Arabia is moving to deploy about 10,000 recruits from the so-called "Dera al-Watan" factions into the valley districts in the coming days. Today they finished celebrating the graduation of a new batch of these factions in Hadhramaut.

This was confirmed by Ahmed Saeed bin Breik, vice president of the Southern Transitional Council (STC), who spoke in a television interview on Friday that there is an agreement to deploy the "Dera al-Watan" factions from the people of Hadhramaut in the valley districts instead of the "First Military Region" forces loyal to Islah.

Since October of last year, Saudi Arabia worked to re-embrace Islah bully boyz as part of its battle against the UAE. Riyadh had begun to dominate Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
i areas under the control of the coalition. Recently, the balance of power changed in favor of Abu Dhabi again on the fourth of May.

It should be noted that the Islah party was excluded from the scene in southern and eastern Yemen by its coalition partners. Riyadh seems to have excluded the party once again, which has become the weakest link among the coalition partners in Yemen.

The UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC), which is calling for the secession of southern Yemen, has moved on Sunday in collaboration with al-Qaeda elements against the tribes in Lahj province that do support Yemeni unity.

Al-Qaeda’s branch in the province distributed a statement by the so-called "Amir of the state", threatening Sheikh Ali Obaid al-Azibi, the most prominent sheikh of the Sabr district, saying they would use booby traps, silencers and bombs to fight the tribe. The statement also "accused" al-Azibi of being loyal to the National Salvation Government in Sana’a.

The al-Qaeda move came in the wake of the failure of the UAE-backed STC to storm Sabr in order to arrest al-Azibi, who advocates for national unity.

Mobilising terrorist elements in the face of those calling for unity reflects an attempt to terrorise people and influential personalities in preparation for the subjugation of the province, in which the STC is suffering from its rebellion against its authority in Aden.

#1  Al Qaeda has had much more influence in the Hadhramout (eastern homeland of the Bin Laden) than Lahj province. Lahj has a must stronger affiliation with Aden (and international trade). It is supposed that given its druthers Lahj would like to be free of both the North and the East, which means it doesn't want to take orders either from the UAE or the Al Qaeda.
