Sudan Islamists back army in push to preserve sharia: AFP Report
[AlAhram] With talks suspended between protest leaders and Sudan's military over a transfer of power to civilian rule, Islamist movements are backing the army in the hope it will keep sharia law in place.

Islamist parties stayed on the sidelines during the months of nationwide protests that led to the April ouster of long-time ruler Omar al-Bashir
Head of the National Congress Party. He came to power in 1989 when he, as a brigadier in the Sudanese army, led a group of officers in a bloodless military coup that ousted the government of Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi and eventually appointed himself president-for-life. He has fallen out with his Islamic mentor, Hasan al-Turabi, tried to impose shariah on the Christian and animist south, resulting in its secessesion, and attempted to Arabize Darfur by unleashing the barbaric Janjaweed on it. Sudan's potential prosperity has been pissed away in warfare that has left as many as 400,000 people dead and 2.5 million displaced. Omar has been indicted for genocide by the International Criminal Court but nothing is expected to come of it.
They have since not joined the protest alliance at loggerheads with the generals over the makeup of a new governing body, which would rule the country for a three-year transitional period.

Africa Subsaharan
Boko Haram Killed 2,295 Teachers, Destroyed 1,500 Schools in Nigeria in Nine Years
[Beitbart] Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
has killed an estimated 2,295 teachers and displaced 19,000 people in northeastern Nigeria since it launched an insurgency in 2009 to establish an Islamic emirate, the African nation’s minister of education revealed this week.

The English translation for the name Boko Haram is "Western education is forbidden."

Since 2014 alone, Boko Haram has destroyed 1,500 schools, resulting in 1,280 casualties among teachers and students, the Nation reported on Friday.

Nigeria’s Legit.ng media outlet quotes Education Minister Mallam Adamu Adamu as saying:

The greatest challenge of the out-of-school, phenomenon in recent years has been the problem of insurgency. Since the inception of the insurgency in the North-East [part of Nigeria] education has been under constant and system attack resulting in the killing of both learners and teachers and the destruction of education facilities.

In total, in the last nine years, soon after Boko Haram launched its insurgency, the jihadis killed over 2,295 teachers and displaced 19,000 in just the northeastern states of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa.

Boko Haram and its offshoot, the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
West Africa Province (ISWAP), consider northeastern Nigeria, namely the Sambisa Forest that straddles several states, a safe haven for terrorist activity.

’This crisis has further devastated the education system as children, teachers, and schools are in the front line of the conflict," the minister acknowledged, according to Legit.ng.

Borno state is considered the birthplace of Boko Haram.

In 2016, Boko Haram split from ISWAP over leadership differences.

Marking a significant departure from Boko Haram’s ISWAP has cultivated support among local civilians, allowing the terrorist group to turn the neglected communities into a source of economic aid.

In May, the International Crisis Group (ICG), a nongovernmental organization (NGO) committed to preventing and resolving deadly conflicts, reported:

Three years after Boko Haram broke apart [in 2016], one faction, the Islamic State in West Africa Province, is forming a proto-state in northern Nigeria. The state should press its military offensive against the jihadists but also try undercutting their appeal by improving governance and public services.

Boko Haram’s pledge of allegiance to the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIS) gave birth to ISWAP.

Some analysts believe the fall of the so-called ISIS territorial caliphate has pushed the jihads to leave the Middle East to Africa and Afghanistan where they can join local wings of the group.

Iraq
Iraqi premier to reopen heavily fortified Green Zone during Eid al-Fitr
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) ‐ Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi has ordered the heavily fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad to be open during Eid al-Fitr, his media office said.

The 10-square-kilometer area, which is home to several government buildings and foreign embassies, will be open for 24 hours as of the first day of Eid al-Fitr, slated for Tuesday, June 4, said the office in a press statement.

Eid al-Fitr is the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal. It marks the end of Ramadan, which is a month of fasting and prayer. It is a holiday in almost all Islamic countries.

The move is expected to be warmly welcomed by the Iraqi people as the zone’s closure was seen as a symbol of the isolation of Iraq’s rulers from citizens.

The closure of the governmental area also caused considerable traffic disruption in the city of seven million people.

The zone on the bank of the Tigris River has been largely off limits to ordinary Iraqis due to security concerns since the 2003 U.S. invasion that ousted Saddam Hussein.

The zone is a home to several government buildings and foreign embassies, including that of the United States. Checkpoints and concrete barriers have for years blocked bridges and highways leading into the zone.

The government area has witnessed several protests over the past few years, demanding an end to widely-spread corruption and improvement of public services.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Drawing the Back the Curtain: Hamas Runs International BDS Campaign From Gaza
[Jpost] The US and EU classified terrorist organization Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", is waging a Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign against the Jewish state, revealing violent structures of a movement that claims to use peaceful tactics.

Dr. Basem Naim described himself as "Head of Boycott Campaign & Hamas Official" in a May 17 statement protesting the German Bundestag’s (parliament) resolution recognizing BDS as an antisemitic campaign.

Naim wrote that "We condemn passing this unfair resolution by the German Bundestag that is against the Paleostinian people’s right to resist the Israeli occupation, which is the most terrible occupation in history, with all means possible, given that boycott is a peaceful means of resistance against the Israeli occupation."

Israel’s government does not occupy the Hamas-controlled Gazoo Strip. In 2005, the Israeli government withdrew from Gazoo.

Naim added "On the other hand, we call on Germany to reverse this resolution for it provides support for the Israeli occupation and protects it from being held accountable for crimes committed against the Paleostinian people. Moreover, this move does not serve security and stability in the region. We expect Germany to provide support for the Paleostinian people until they restore their freedom and establish their independent state."

The non-binding German Bundestag resolution said the BDS campaign, including its "Don’t Buy" stickers, recalled "the most terrible chapter in German history" and revived memories of the Nazi movement’s slogan "Don’t buy from Jews."

"The pattern of argument and methods of the BDS movement are antisemitic," the resolution noted.

The parliament’s resolution said the government should not finance organizations that support BDS or question the existence of the Jewish state. Neo-Nazi parties in Germany such as The Third Way and the National Democratic Party (NPD) advocate BDS against Israel.

The role of the violent jihadi organization Hamas in BDS raises question marks over claims of non-violence from Omar Barghouti, a Paleostinian activist and the cofounder of the BDS movement. After Barghouti was denied entry into the United States in April, he told the Russia state-controlled outlet: "The US administration has been mobilized now to do Israel’s bidding in trying to silence Paleostinian, Israeli and international human rights
...not to be confused with individual rights, mind you...
defenders, who are active in this extremely effective and very important non-violent BDS movement." Russia Today, or RT, frequently promotes a sympathetic view of BDS activists and the economic warfare campaign against Israel.

BDS activists disrupted a talk in May in Aurich, Germany held by the Israeli author Arye Sharuz Shalicar. In 2017, BDS activists stormed a panel discussion with the Israeli Holocaust survivor Deborah Weinstein in Berlin.

Myanmar soldiers jailed for Rohingya killings freed after less than a year
[DAWN] Myanmar has granted early release to seven soldiers placed in durance vile
Please don't kill me!
for the killing of 10 Rohingya Moslem men and boys during a 2017 military crackdown in the western state of Rakhine, two prison officials, two former fellow inmates and one of the soldiers told Rooters.

The soldiers were freed in November last year, the two inmates said, meaning they served less than one year of their 10-year prison terms for the killings at Inn Din village.

They also served less jail time than two Rooters news hounds who uncovered the killings. The journalists, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, spent more than 16 months behind bars on charges of obtaining state secrets. The two were released in an amnesty on May 6.
