An experienced pilot's perspective on Boeing's MCAS system problem
You can skip a lot of the video where he goes over his history and credentials, but lots of interesting info here outside of that. Lots of blame to spread around, including those that clamored for and allowed training more geared to day-to-day flying procedures and didn't really go over systems and emergency procedures.

#5  Remember the movie Apollo 13, where the engineers keep throwing different emergency scenarios at the astronauts in the simulator? The result of which was they were calm in emergencies. Pilots nowadays don't want to be bothered with all that extraneous stuff.

#6  Juan Browne / blancolirio is a great Youtube channel. He did extensive coverage of the Oroville Dam emergency and repair and also the Northern California fires. He flies his "mighty Luscombe" taildragger (which he restored) and rides his motorcycles over the mountain trails in the western US. Citizen journalism at its finest! I've been subscribed to his channel for a few years. It was interesting to hear his full background.

#7  #5, I think you are remembering Apollo 12, which got hit by lightning, twice, during ascent from launch. Its a pretty famous Engineering event: "SCE to aux" - Engineer John Aaron in mission control and Astronaut Alan Bean saved the second mission to the moon from disaster due to simulation and training a year earlier...

At 52 seconds, as the rocket traveled at over 1,600 feet per second, another bolt shook the craft. The "8-ball" attitude indicator spun wildly and the lights on the instrument panel stopped flashing and went dead.... The astronauts approaching space and the engineers on Earth now had ninety seconds to decide whether to abort. John Aaron, a 24-year-old NASA engineer who hailed from Oklahoma made the call...

The loss of all three fuel cells put the CSM entirely on batteries, which were unable to maintain normal 75-ampere launch loads on the 28-volt DC bus. One of the AC inverters dropped offline. These power supply problems lit nearly every warning light on the control panel and caused much of the instrumentation to malfunction.

Electrical, Environmental and Consumables Manager (EECOM) John Aaron remembered the telemetry failure pattern from an earlier test when a power supply malfunctioned in the CSM Signal Conditioning Equipment (SCE), which converted raw signals from instrumentation to standard voltages for the spacecraft instrument displays and telemetry encoders.[3]

Aaron made a call, "Try SCE to aux," which switched the SCE to a backup power supply. The switch was fairly obscure, and neither Flight Director Gerald Griffin, CAPCOM Gerald Carr, nor Mission Commander Pete Conrad immediately recognized it. Lunar Module Pilot Alan Bean, flying in the right seat as the spacecraft systems engineer, remembered the SCE switch from a training incident a year earlier when the same failure had been simulated. Aaron's quick thinking and Bean's memory saved what could have been an aborted mission, and earned Aaron the reputation of a "steely-eyed missile man".[4] Bean put the fuel cells back on line, and with telemetry restored, the launch continued successfully. Once in Earth parking orbit, the crew carefully checked out their spacecraft before re-igniting the S-IVB third stage for trans-lunar injection. The lightning strikes had caused no serious permanent damage.

This was way back in the day when this nation still admired "steely-eyed missile men"

Harvard investigates 'trauma' among students after law professor agrees to represent Harvey Weinstein
[OUTLINE] Harvard University has launched an investigation into law professor Ronald Sullivan after he agreed to represent Harvey Weinstein in court.

Mr Sullivan, the university’s first African American faculty dean, joined Mr Weinstein’s legal team in January, ahead of the June trial for rape.

Mr Weinstein himself was spotted on Wednesday meeting a private investigator, Herman Weisberg, who he has hired to assist in his case. The two men met at a Cipriani Dolci restaurant in Grand Central station, with Mr Weinstein attempting to disguise his appearance with a black baseball cap and dark glasses.

Mr Sullivan, on joining Mr Weinstein’s team, felt the backlash almost immediately, as his students began complaining that his decision to represent the disgraced film producer traumatised them, and put them at risk.

A student, studying visual and environmental studies, started an online petition to remove Mr Sullivan from his position as faculty dean of Winthrop House, one of Harvard’s 12 undergraduate residential houses. The petition said his choice of client was "deeply trauma-inducing," and showed that Mr Sullivan doesn’t "value the safety of students". No students have signed so far.

The house was covered in #MeToo graffiti slogans, such as "your silence is violence", and the Association of Black Harvard Women complained that Mr Sullivan had "failed" female African-Americans at Harvard and had compromised his ability to support "survivors . . . as they deal with their trauma."

On January 25 Mr Sullivan wrote to the students at Winthrop House, where he is dean, explaining his decision to defend the reviled 67-year-old.

Italian politician opposed to mandatory vaccination of children is hospitalised with chicken pox
[EURONEWS] Some would call it karma. An Italian far-right politician who opposed making some vaccines for children mandatory has contracted chicken pox, according to reports by Italian media.

Massimiliano Fedriga, a member of the right-wing League party was hospitalised earlier this month with the highly contagious chicken pox infection, which causes an itchy rash with red fluid-filled blisters.

Fedriga was placed under observation for four days, said La Repubblica.
Here’s hoping he doesn’t get encephalitis or a bad case of shingles as a result. And of course one prays he doesn’t pass it on directly or indirectly to someone pregnant, causing damage to the fetus.
As president of the northeastern region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Fedriga vehemently opposed the "Lorenzin law," which made it mandatory for school-aged children to be vaccinated against several diseases including chicken pox, measles, and polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set...
The law came into effect last week and will fine parents up to €500 if they send unvaccinated children to school. Children under six who are in a nursery or kindergarten can be completely turned away under the new law.

The ruling Five Star Movement was for a long time opposed to making school vaccination requirements mandatory. Last year, the party threatened to overturn Italia's vaccination laws but later backed down on the issue.

Faux News Will Keep Jeanine Pirro Off Schedule for Another Week
[Variety] "Justice With Judge Jeanine," the Saturday-night opinion show led by Jeanine Pirro, will be off the Fox News schedule for a second week in the wake of remarks she made about a Muslim congresswoman.

The network’s online schedule shows that it will run another repeat of the documentary series "Scandalous" in its place Saturday night at 9 p.m.

Fox News declined to comment and has in recent days said it will not elaborate on what it has called "scheduling changes." There has been recent speculation that Pirro, a fierce supporter of President Donald Trump, could return to the schedule Saturday, March 30. The president has taken to Twitter to express his support for Pirro’s show.

During her March 9th broadcast, the former New York prosecutor, suggested Minnesota Democrat Ihan Omar, a U.S. representative, did not respect the law set down by the Constitution of the United States. "Is her adherence to this Islamic doctrine indicative of her adherence to Sharia law, which is antithetical to the U.S. Constitution?" Pirro asked. Oman is a Muslim. She has not appeared on Fox News since, and has not posted on Twitter since March 10.

Gabon's Ali Bongo set for return after long illness abroad
[Al Jazeera] Gabonese President Ali Bongo, who is convalescing in Morocco after suffering a stroke five months ago, will return home this weekend for the third time since he fell ill, his office has said.

Bongo "will leave Morocco to return to Gabon on Saturday March 23," presidential front man Ike Ngouoni said in a statement on Thursday.

"[He] is delighted to return to his fellow countrymen ... and wishes to give his warmest thanks ... to the King of Morocco, Mohammed VI, for his excellent welcome and incomparable support throughout his stay."

Bongo, 60, was taken ill on October 24 while visiting Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
He has returned only twice since then, staying less than 48 hours each time, although the government has insisted that he is in good shape.

In late February, Bongo led a cabinet meeting during which a raft of appointments were announced and several close aides were dismissed, although no media were on hand for the event.

Nicaragua joins Cuba, Venezuela on human rights black list
[PULSE.NG] The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) on Thursday put Nicaragua on its human rights
One man's rights are another man's existential threat.
black list along with Venezuela and Cuba, the group said.

In its annual report, citing a group of experts' conclusion in December, the IACHR said authorities committed crimes against humanity while cracking down on demonstrators against President Daniel Ortega's government.

The IACHR "has watched closely as Nicaragua's human rights situation continued to worsen, particularly since the start of violence from April 18, 2018, as part of state repression of protests," it said a statement.

Also in the report by the independent body of the Organization of American States, Venezuela and Cuba again were described as countries that did not meet respect for human rights.

Nicaragua has been mired in political crisis since April last year, when a protest initially against a now-scrapped pension reform snowballed into opposition to Ortega's rule.

The 73-year-old former left-wing guerrilla leader has been in power for more than 11 years but alongside his wife Vice President Rosario Murillo, he's been accused of ruling with an iron fist and committing rights abuses.

The deadly unrest has left at least 325 people dead, 2,000 people maimed, and sent 52,000 people into exile, human rights groups say.

Managua was to blame for what the IACHR called arbitrary and excessive use of police force -- use of parapolice groups without the state stopping them.

Ortega has rejected out of hand another key opposition demand that he steps down and brings forward elections slated for 2021.

He has offered to implement electoral reform and release prisoners -- some of whom have been charged with terrorism for taking part in protests against Ortega -- that have yet to be tried.

Guaidó: Who made the decision to imprison Roberto Marrero "committed another awkwardness"
[ELUNIVERSAL] The president of the National Assembly, Juan Guaidó, said that the arrest of his chief of office, Roberto Marrero, "does not change the route or the will of the people," to ensure that "we have prepared for this moment after the imprisonment of Leopoldo "(López) in 2014.

The lawyer Roberto Marrero was arrested by officials of Sebin early today at his home in Los Naranjos in Las Mercedes, municipality of Baruta, after a raid took place at his home and in the deputy Sergio Vergara, in the same town.

From the center Don Bosco, Guaidó warned officials that "there are direct consequences of executing unconstitutional orders and their leaders have already called to exculpate, know it."

On a presumed escalation by the Government to imprison him, Guaidó said that President Nicolás Maduro "does not dare or does not command" among the police component, to reiterate that "the chain of command is broken".

"Either he does not dare to imprison me or he just does not send and unjustly kidnapped Marrero, who, besides being part of my team, is a friend," he said, to then maintain that "there are no elements to stop Marrero."

"It is even ridiculous the mechanism to stop, laugh in the world. They are so coarse that they probably used the same weapons that they sowed to Gilber (Caro, arrested in 2017) (...) As they can not take prisoner to the president in charge, they look for the near ones to threaten. Whatever happens, as Marrero said, we move forward, "he said.

Guaidó said that the one who made the decision to imprison Roberto Marrero "committed another awkwardness" and commented that although the government seeks to "intimidate and generate the perception to go for everyone," they can not do it because, in their opinion, "it does not have the capacity "

"What will they go for me? Go ahead. The route is marked. Which is the message? Afraid? It's okay. Go ahead. Trust does not only come from knowing that we have citizenship, that we have the support of more than 60 nations, that we are covered by the Constitution; but the certainty that we are doing the right thing to save lives, " said the sworn in president in charge of Venezuela.

SK anti-aircraft missile misfire due to 'mistake': Air Force

#1  ...(Reads TFA) Yeah, that would be a mistake, all right.

What's kind of interesting here is the dog that didn't bark in the night: the inadvertent launch site is, according to TFA, 85km NE of Seoul...which means that it would have been easily visible from the other side of the DMZ, and yet nobody said a word.

#7  We were trained in 'Lock out Tag out' Where if you turn something off for maintenance and you don't want, for example, someone to turn on a high voltage line, you would either lock the switch in the off position or put a big red tag on it (Do not turn on!). We were trained not to turn the 'tagged' switch on - apparently some people would ignore the switch to dire results without training.

British cannot close off fishing waters post Brexit: France
[PULSE.NG] French Minister of Agriculture Didier Guillaume said Thursday it was "not possible" for Britain to close its waters to French and other EU fishermen after Brexit.

India-Pakistan
PTI councillor among two more men handed life in jail over lynching of Mashal Khan
[DAWN] Two more men were sentenced to multiple counts of life imprisonment by an anti-terrorism court on Thursday for their involvement in the 2017 lynching of Mashal Khan.

Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf
...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations....
tehsil councillor Arif Khan and varsity employee Asad Khan Katlang were given four counts each of life imprisonment by ATC Judge Mehmoodul Hassan Khattak. Two other suspects identified as Sabir Mayar and Izharullah were acquitted by the court.

The written judgement issued today stated that, given the witness statements and supporting videos, photos and scene of the crime recoveries, it is "crystal clear" that PTI tehsil councillor Arif provoked and instigated a mob of students against Mashal.

Arif did this by "delivering provocative speeches", and even took "an active part in his murder by hatching a criminal conspiracy", following which "unlawful assembly was made for using criminal force and violence, which resulted in the barbaric death of Mashal".

The judgement noted: "The prosecution has been successful to bring home the charges levelled against him beyond shadow of any reasonable doubt, because the conspiracy to commit murder was generally not hatched in open places or within the view or hearing of outsiders, and it can be inferred from the facts and circumstances of the case, and no one should be permitted to take the law into his own hands on the pretext of punishing infidels."

Additionally, the judgement noted that Katlang was an "active participant of the aggravated infuriated mob and illegal assembly", and was clearly spotted kicking and hitting Mashal in various videos "so he is also convicted".

With respect to Sabir Mayar and Izharullah, "The prosecution could not be able to bring home any cogent and convincing reliable evidence against them, and nor they are seen in any video clips [...] hence these two are acquitted of all charges against them," the judgement said.

Iraq
Ferry sinks in Tigris near Iraq's Mosul, killing 55
[DAWN] A ferry overloaded with people celebrating the Kurdish new year sank in the Tigris River near the Iraqi city of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
on Thursday, killing at least 55 people, mostly women and kiddies, officials said.

Col. Hussam Khalil, head of the Civil Defense in the northern Nineveh province, told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named the accident occurred as scores of people were out in a tourist area celebrating Nowruz, which marks the Kurdish new year and the arrival of spring.

Health Ministry front man Seif al-Badr said the dead include 33 women, 12 children and 10 men. He said 30 people were rescued, adding that search operations are still underway as it is not known how many people were aboard the ferry.

Khalil said the ferry sank because of a technical problem, and that there weren't many boats in the area to rescue people. He said more than 80 people were on the ferry when it sank.
Overloaded, technical problem probably due to poor maintenance, likely the passengers could not swim, there were no life jackets or rescue boats onboard... typical Third World inshallah behaviour.
The river's level was high because of a rainy season that brought more precipitation than in previous years.

Why the shifting axis is driving people crazy: Evidence for a Human Geomagnetic Sense
[Science Daily] Many humans are able to unconsciously detect changes in Earth-strength magnetic fields, according to scientists at Caltech and the University of Tokyo.

The study, led by geoscientist Joseph Kirschvink (BS, MS '75) and neuroscientist Shin Shimojo at Caltech as well as neuroengineer Ayu Matani at the University of Tokyo, offers experimental evidence that human brain waves respond to controlled changes in Earth-strength magnetic fields. Kirschvink and Shimojo say this is the first concrete evidence of a new human sense: magnetoreception. Their findings were published by the journal eNeuro on March 18.

"Many animals have magnetoreception, so why not us?" asks Connie Wang, Caltech graduate student and lead author of the eNeuro study. For example, honeybees, salmon, turtles, birds, whales, and bats use the geomagnetic field to help them navigate, and dogs can be trained to locate buried magnets. It has long been theorized that humans may share a similar ability. However, despite a flurry of research attempting to test for it in the '80s, it has never been conclusively demonstrated.

"Aristotle described the five basic senses as including vision, hearing, taste, smell, and touch," says Kirschvink, co-corresponding author of the eNeuro study and Nico and Marilyn Van Wingen Professor of Geobiology. "However, he did not consider gravity, temperature, pain, balance, and several other internal stimuli that we now know are part of the human nervous system. Our animal ancestry argues that geomagnetic field sensors should also be there representing not the sixth sense but perhaps the 10th or 11th human sense to be discovered."

Border Patrol releases Hundreds to Reduce Overcrowding
[LATimes] The Border Patrol released 250 migrants here on Tuesday and Wednesday and expects to free hundreds more in coming days because there is no room to hold them.

Normally, the agency would transfer the migrants to Immigration and Customs Enforcement to be "processed" and in many cases placed in detention facilities. But officials said Wednesday that a recent influx of Central American families has led to a severe shortage of space.
But it's not an emergency.
Immigrant advocates suggested the releases were intended to sow confusion at the border and further President Trump's argument that there is a national emergency there.

"They are doing this deliberately so they can release a ton of people at once and create chaos," said Efren Olivares, an attorney with the Texas Civil Rights Project, which sent lawyers to the McAllen bus station to monitor developments. "The government is trying to do this."
There are not too many people coming in. Send more!
Volunteers in the area are already accustomed to helping large numbers of newly released migrants. Elizabeth Cavazos, a leader of the migrant advocacy group Angry Tias & Abuelas of RGV, said ICE typically releases 300 to 500 migrants a day in McAllen.
Typically, but that's normal, not a crisis. That's 180,000 per year.
But additional releases in large numbers by the Border Patrol are likely to strain the system, she said.

"I feel like they're trying to put some stress on the volunteer and advocacy groups, all of us touting ‘There's no crisis down here,'" Cavazos said. "Maybe it's for them to save face because they've been calling this a border crisis and everything's peachy keen down here. That's what it feels like."
Open borders it what it feels like to me.
