on Wednesday, sources said.

An IED hit the police officer's private vehicle, the sources said, in PD3 of Lashkargah city, capital of the province.

"A car mechanic was also with the police officer inside his vehicle and was maimed in the blast," the source said.

Local officials have not yet commented.

No group including the Taliban

Taliban Increase Presence in Areas Left by ANDSF
[ToloNews] The Taliban
...Arabic for students...
has increased its presence in areas where the Afghan National Security and Defense Forces (ANDSF) left military installations and checkpoints.

Referring to a decision to either relocate or withdraw personnel from military installations in some regions of the country, the Afghan Ministry of Defense (MoD) said that some of these checkpoints and bases were not positioned in optimal areas.

The Ministry of Interior (MoI) said that it has reduced the number of police checkpoints by half to reduce casualties among the police force.

Meanwhile,
...back at the cheese factory, all the pieces finally fell together in Fluffy's mind...
footage received by TOLOnews shows that the Taliban has established checkpoints on the Kunduz-Takhar highway.

Passengers and drivers on the highway have said that the Taliban established new checkpoints on the highway after the government forces withdrew from adjacent areas.

"There are no government forces toward the Takhar checkpoint," said one driver on the highway.

"Taliban are there at the Khanabad checkpoint, they can do whatever they want," said a driver on the highway.

Local officials in Kunduz have said that new checkpoints will be established in some parts of Kunduz in the spring.

Also in Baghlan province, the government has withdrawn from some checkpoints on the Pul-e-Khumri to Mazar-e-Sharif highway.

"The government is not taking responsibility for security, the Taliban are always on the highway, we hardly manage to travel," said Jawad, a resident in Baghlan.

"I came from Kunduz, the Taliban have established three to four checkpoints along the highway, we are facing a lot of security challenges in Pul-e-Khumri," said Qand Agha, a resident of Baghlan.

This comes days after the Ministry of Defense said that it had relocated an Afghan National Army base from Bala Murghab district of Badghis province and settled it in a different area.

"If our bases are in jeopardy, the leadership of the Ministry of Defense tries to relocate them to a better location to avoid threats," said Rohullah Ahmadzai, a front man for the Ministry of Defense.

There are no details about how many of the military installations and checkpoints have been relocated in recent months, but the Ministry of Interior has said that over the past one year almost half of the police checkpoints have been reduced across the nation to reduce casualties.

"We have reduced the presence of police in more than 6,000 checkpoints to 113 bases and 3,700 checkpoints—the move was aimed to reduce the role of police in war and instead to transfer the war responsibilities to the Ministry of Defense," said Minister of Interior Massoud Andarabi.

Andarabi on Tuesday said that the Afghan government strongly believes in peace and has not declared a war against anyone; however, it’s up to the Taliban to decide on a path of peace or war this spring.

"The Afghan government has not declared any operation for the month of Hamal (March), because we are still committed to peace and believe that the door for peace should remain open," said Andarabi.

The Taliban usually announces its offensive in the spring.

Andarabi underlined the military capability of the Afghan cops to defend the nation against threats.

province on Tuesday night, the Ministry of Defense said in a statement on Wednesday.

The operation was launched in Adraskan district in the province in which "six Taliban were killed, and their weapons and ammunition were seized."

"11 army soldiers, seven coppers, three Afghan Air Force members, seven workers of a project, seven babus government employees and a public uprising force member were freed from the prison," the ministry said.

"The Taliban prison was destroyed during the operation," the ministry said.

Herat governor Waheed Qatali said "the operation was conducted at around 11pm last night in Karocha village in Adraskan district and was continued into early Wednesday."

"The security forces had no casualties during the operation," he said.

The Taliban so far has not commented on the operation.

36 Wounded as Security Forces Engage Herat Strongman

[ToloNews] At least 36 people have been maimed--including three military personnel--in the Jabriel area of Herat
...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns...
city after shooting broke out between security forces and gunnies affiliated with a local strongman named Habibullah Ghoryani on Wednesday, according to Herat health officials.

Fighting is still ongoing, said local sources on Wednesday night.

"Three police personnel and 11 civilians have been transferred to the hospital," said Mohammad Ibrahim Mohammadi, the head of Herat Ambulance, earlier in the evening. Details about current casualties are not available.

Local officials in Herat have said that the firefight broke out after security forces tried to arrest Ghoryani. Ghoryani is accused of murder and intimidation. The court has issued a warrant for his arrest.

Two of the maimed people are at death's door, according to Herat's health department.

Morocco sees Sahel jihadists as magnet for local cells
[AlAhram] 'The terrorist threat persists as long as there are groups that recruit and train their followers online including Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. in the greater Sahara,' Haboub Cherkaoui told Rooters in an interview

Jihadist groups in the nearby Sahel region
... North Africa's answer to the Pak tribal areas...
, which recruit and train their followers online, represent Morocco’s biggest holy warrior threat, the head of its counterterrorism agency said.

Although Morocco has had only one major attack over the past decade - the 2018 killing of two Scandinavian tourists - its location "makes it a target for the Sahel groups" said Haboub Cherkaoui.

Since it was set up in 2015, Cherkaoui’s Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation has dismantled dozens of holy warrior cells and arrested more than a thousand suspected jihadists, he said.

The numbers point to the continued holy warrior risk in Morocco after the rise of Islamic State in Syria and Iraq last decade caused a surge in jihadist activity that persists even after the group was defeated in its Middle East heartland.

Islamic State refocused on the Sahel region, he said, and along with other jihadist groups there has taken advantage of mostly non-existent borders and trafficking networks.

Both Niger and Mali have battled holy warrior insurgencies while Libya’s civil war has created space for jihadist groups to operate.

In late February, Moroccan Prime Minister Saad Dine El Otmani took part in a Sahel security summit in Ndjamena and offered support for military action against jihadist groups, including through training troops.

Morocco is also concerned that some of its nationals who joined Islamic State in the Middle East might have relocated to the Sahel, Cherkaoui said.

In total, 1,645 Moroccans joined jihadist groups in Syria and Iraq, including 745 who died in suicide kabooms or in battle. Most of the 1,645 fought for Islamic State.

Of the survivors, 270 have returned to Morocco and 137 were prosecuted, said Cherkaoui, adding that 288 women and 391 minors also went to the conflict zones, following their main income provider.

Moroccan law punishes by up to 10 years those who join jihadist groups abroad.

Morocco has offered intelligence that helped arrest Jihadists or foil attacks in La Belle France, Belgium, Italia, Spain, Germany, Burkina Faso
...The country in west Africa that they put where Upper Volta used to be. Its capital is Oogadooga, or something like that. Its president is currently Blaise Compaoré, who took office in 1987 and will leave office feet first, one way or the other...
, Sri Lanka and recently the United States, Cherkaoui said.

"Our success hinges on continued intelligence sharing with our partners," Cherkaoui said.

Europe
8 people have been injured, in what initial reports sat was a terrorist attack in Vetlanda Sweden
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]
The Local - Sweden adds:
Police have not confirmed the type of weapon used in the attack.

The suspect was described by police as being in his 20s, and the state of his injuries as “unclear” but not judged to be life-threatening. He was being treated at hospital under police observation and questioning had not yet started.

Police said the suspect was previously known to police for “minor crimes” and lived in Småland.

According to the police report, the first emergency calls about the attack came in shortly before 3pm, with the first patrol arriving on the scene at 3.10pm. Police said that the suspect was located three minutes after the first patrol arrived, and that the armed man was shot and arrested.

At 6.47pm police announced that they were investigating whether the attack was motivated by terrorism.

Questioned by Göteborgs Posten on why the incident was suspected as terrorism, police said: “There are details in the investigation that lead us to investigate a possible terror motive, but I cannot give further information.”

They said there was no indication of further suspects being involved in the incident, and that the situation at the scene in Vetlanda was “under control”.

Sweden’s national terror threat level is currently at three on a scale of one to five. At the press conference, police said they had had no previous information that such an incident was likely in Vetlanda but said the threat level “indicates that something of this kind could happen in Sweden”.

Five areas of the town, located in the centre several hundred metres apart, have been identified as crime scenes and cordoned off in connection with the investigation.

Vetlanda is a town in Jönköping, southern Sweden, located around 275 kilometres southwest of Stockholm and home to around 14,000 inhabitants.
More from the Daily Mail:
The assailant, reportedly a 22-year-old Afghan national, was shot in the leg after launching his attack at around 3pm in Vetlanda, a small town in the country's south.

Three of the victims suffered life-threatening injuries, while another two were said to be in a 'serious condition.'

Local media gave conflicting reports that the assailant used either a knife or an axe.

Last night, police raided the suspect's apartment in the town. He is known to police and has previous convictions for minor drugs offences, including possession of cannabis, according to daily newspaper Expressen.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Tension returns between Syria's Suwayda, Daraa
[NPASYRIA] Following the incident of shooting a guard of a well in the town of al- Qrayya by shepherds from Busra al-Harir, north of Daraa, southern Syria, tension re-erupted between Suwayda and the eastern countryside of Daraa.

The shepherds fired at the guard of the well in al-Qaryya after he prevented them from grazing their sheep in the town.

The guard Janah al-Safadi was maimed and then hospitalized, as the ambulance car had a traffic accident wounding the medical team and escorts.

"A tense situation had arisen in the area, and the residents of al-Qaryya gathered at the Guesthouse of Sultan Basha al-Atrash to discuss the impacts of this attack," Rayan al-Jabal, a pseudonym for a politician from Suwayda, said.

"Groups of the Men of Dignity and some gangs arrived to express their solidarity with al-Qaryya and denounce what happened," al-Jabal added.

This escalation, "followed the incident of February 28, when gunnies, who were riding a bike, kidnapped the two young men Nash’at Harb and Jihad Elwan from the village of Ara, and took them to Daraa," according to him.

"The trader Watheq al-Shofi, known by the residents of Daraa and Suwayda, was kidnapped with Ramah Shalghin, who was released after the kidnappers realized, he has been military member," al-Jabal noted.

He pointed out that the families of the abductees accused the Bedouin clans led by Jamal al-Bala’s of the abduction.

On March 1, a meeting was held in the city of Bosra with the participation of a delegation from Suwayda including Lu’ay al-Atrash, the Emir of Ara, Imad al-Aqabani, the Security Relations Coordinator for the Russian forces in the southern region, and Sheikh Abu Tha’er Awad al-Miqdad from Bosra.

The meeting concluded reaching an agreement to "ban shepherds from entering to al-Qaryya and intensify the guardianship by the Fifth Corps near the borders between the two regions," according to al-Jabal.

Rayan al-Jabal concluded that the Lebanese Hezbollah has been the most affected by the reconciliation reached in 2020 between Daraa and Suwayda, trying its best to impede it then.

Unidentified persons injure SDF members in Syria's Deir ez-Zor
[NPASYRIA] On Wednesday, four members of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) were maimed after unidentified persons targeted an SDF vehicle in the town of al-Shuhail in the Deir ez-Zor countryside.

"Masked persons using RPKs fired at a vehicle of an SDF commander as it crossed the main road in the town of al-Shuhail, east of Deir ez-Zor," a military source told North Press.

"Two commanders and two members were maimed of varying severity. They were all transferred to the hospital for treatment," the source added.

The eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor has witnessed an improvement in the security situation in recent days, unlike the previous period which witnessed liquidations almost every day.

On February 18, unidentified persons shot a young man in al-Zar neighborhood in al-Shuhail, wounding him with two bullets, without knowing the cause.
