Turkey detains over 700 over alleged links to coup bid
[IsraelTimes] Ottoman Turkish authorities detained 729 people in nationwide raids Tuesday over alleged links to a group blamed for a failed coup in 2016, the Ankara public prosecutor’s office said.

Officials had sent to authorities in 75 provinces the names of 1,112 people under investigation over suspected ties to US-based Moslem preacher Fethullah Gülen

#4  TW: Have you seen any sort of a decent web reference where this guy, Gulen, is responsible for some terrible insurrection that Erdogan keeps blaming and imprisoning the populace for?

Bluntly, Fairbanks, no.

President, formerly Prime Minister Erdogan has been purging Turkey of competitors at an accelerating pace since about 2007/2008. First the secular generals who might overthrow him to maintain Ataturkian secularism (search Sledgehammer and Ergenekon), then in 2013 he blamed Gulenists throughout the justice system for implicating his sons as participants in a huge corruption scandal. Whether there was an actual attempt in 2016 by a few low-level army officers to remove President Erdogan and restore secularity, or whether it was a classical fake plot to give Erdogan an excuse to deepen and broaden the purge that had been accelerating for a decade will perhaps one day be revealed, but as it followed on the resumption of Turkey’s war against the Kurds/the Kurdish revolt, I personally think it was an excuse to do what was already planned.

To be honest, Fethullen Gulen and Mr. Erdogan had been running together in harness for much of Erdogan’s political career. Both desire the establishment of a neo-Ottoman sultanate in Turkey with influence throughout the world. Erdogan has worked through Turkish politics to achieve the re-Islamization of Turkish society, while Mr. Gulen had already been working for a generation on an Islamicist march through the institutions via a chain of private schools throughout Turkey and the world — supported by donations from Gulen’s followers and school alumni, the schools follow the Jesuit model of providing a very strong secular education, but with a strongly Turkey-oriented, Sunni Muslim gloss. While Mr, Erdogan has striven to accomplish through a mix of democratic voting and totalitarian control the re-establishment of the sultanate in his lifetime, the Gulenists have been content to slowly convert the entire world via education and the increasing control of their graduates throughout society.

Iraq
Unknown attackers throw grenade at police chief’s house in Kirkuk
[Rudaw] A vehicle caught on surveillance cameras tossed a hand grenade at police chief's house in Kirkuk on Monday night.

Shaho Farhad Mahmood, the eldest son of Brig. Gen Farhad Mahmood, chief of the Azadi Neighborhood Police Station in Kirkuk told Rudaw that this was the second death threat made against his father by unknown attackers.

"Fortunately, the hand grenade did not result in any fatalities, but just left material damages," Shaho said.

The video shows a person in a Ford SUV tossing a grenade into Farhad's courtyard while driving at a high speed.

"They apparently wanted to kill my father," he said, adding security forces have begun an investigation into the attack.

Kurdish Peshmerga forces lost control of Kirkuk in October 2017 after a takeover of the city and most disputed forces by Iraqi forces supported by Iran-backed Hashd al-Shaabi paramilitias and militias.

"After October events of 2017, in a similar attempt, they threw a 40 millimeter grenade at our house," he explained.

Kurdish coppers in Kirkuk are frequently targeted with death threats.

Over the weekend a Kurdish policeman named Salah Mohammed was killed by a Hashd al-Shaabi official in Kirkuk.

Mohammed is survived by five children.

Police said they have issued an arrest warrant for the murderer, but he has fled the city.

The Iraqi military and Hashd have also been targeted by ISIS remnants. The Security Media Center of the Joint Operations Command announced in January that Brigade 61 ‐ directly under the command of Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi ‐ will replace Iraqi Counterterrorism Forces which have been stationed in Kirkuk.

The Ministry of Peshmerga has announced that they are in the midst of planning joint patrols with the Iraqi Army in several disputed areas. Kirkuk acting Governor Rakan Saeed al-Jabouri said he knew nothing of an agreement to redeploy Peshmerga to the city.

The six were found guilty of launching armed and car kabooms against security forces and civilians in Al Khasfa and Hamam Al Alil districts in Nineveh, leaving scores dead, Gilgamish Press quoted the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council as saying in a statement.

Iraqi courts have sentenced many of Islamic State members, including a big number of female members, to death over joining the krazed killer group.

The exact number of detained Lions of Islam is still unknown, however, it’s estimated to be at thousands. It’s also unclear how many members are likely to face death sentences.

Iraq’s anti-terrorism law empowers courts to convict people who are believed to have helped jihadists even if they are not accused of carrying out attacks.

Syrian Army foils jihadist infiltration attempt from Idlib, possible chemical attack on garrison
[AlMasdar] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) foiled another infiltration attempt by the jihadist rebels in the southern countryside of the Idlib Governorate this week.

According to a military communique from nearby Hama, the Syrian Arab Army was able to thwart an infiltration attempt by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham
at the Khuwayn axis in southeastern Idlib.

The communique said that the Syrian Arab Army spotted the group of infiltrators sneaking towards their positions before they could conduct any attack against the soldiers deployed near the Khuwayn axis.

In response to this infiltration attempt, the Syrian Arab Army unleashed a barrage of missiles and artillery shells towards Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham’s positions in the towns of Khan Sheikhoun, al-Tah, and Jarjanaz.

Both sides are now exchanging heavy hostilities along the Hama-Idlib axis, as the situation continues to come apart in northwestern Idlib.

Jihadist rebels allegedly use chemical weapons against Syrian Army in southeast Idlib

A number of Syrian Arab Army (SAA) soldiers were hospitalized on Tuesday after the jihadist rebels of Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham fired chemical substances towards their garrison in southeast Idlib.

According to the Arab language version of Sputnik News, Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham fired chemical substances towards the Syrian Arab Army’s positions in the Sham Al-Hafa region.

Al-Masdar reached out to the Syrian Arab Army in northern Hama to confirm these claims.

A source from the Syrian Arab Army told Al-Masdar that two soldiers were hospitalized as a result of the attack; however, it is not clear if or what chemical substances were used.

These reports come just days after the Russian Foreign Ministry said that the jihadist rebels were preparing a new chemical weapons provocation inside the Idlib Governorate.

Hama-Aleppo offensive: Syrian army sends 2 more divisions, rubbles turban hideouts

Syrian Army sends 2 divisions to Hama and Aleppo as offensive brews

[AlMasdar] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) recently sent two divisions to the Hama and Aleppo governorates as reports of a new offensive continue to swirl around northwestern Syria.

According to a new report from the Hama Governorate, the Syrian Arab Army deployed the 5th Corps and 9th Division to northwestern Syria.

The report said that the 5th Corps and 9th Division were specifically sent to the southwestern part of Aleppo and northern countryside of Hama.

These new reinforcements come just days before the Syrian government and opposition meet in the capital of Kazakhstan to discuss a peace settlement.

Furthermore, the Russian, Ottoman Turkish, and Iranian defense ministers are set to meet in the port city of Sochi this week in order to discuss the current situation inside the Idlib Governorate.

Should all three agree to launch an offensive to rid Idlib of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham
and Tanzim Hurras al-Deen, the Syrian Army reinforcements will come in handy during this battle.

Syrian Army destroys rebel hideouts in northern Hama

[AlMasdar] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) carried out a heavy attack on the northern countryside of the Hama Governorate, today, targeting a number of rebel hideouts inside the buffer zone.

Led by the 4th Armored Division, the Syrian Arab Army launched several surface-to-surface missiles towards a number of Jaish al-Izza hideouts inside the town of al-Janbarah.

According to a military report from the northern Hama front, the Syrian Arab Army managed to destroy these Jaish al-Izza hideouts, while also inflicting heavy casualties within the ranks of the rebel group.

The Syrian Elite Republican Guard also carried out a similar attack on Tuesday, striking Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham
’s positions inside the al-Ghaab Plain.

These attacks by the Syrian Arab Army have become more prevalent as Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham’s expansion last month, coupled with the rebel refusal to leave the buffer zone has created a great deal of animosity.

Deir Ezzor: Nearly 70 human shields killed, US demands ISIS pay 40 tons of gold

Nearly 70 people killed in US airstrikes on eastern Syria

[AlMasdar] At least 70 civilians were killed or wounded as a result of air strikes launched by a US-led international coalition on the Syrian village of Baghuz in the south-east of the country, Syria state television reported, citing local sources.

Syrian media have continually reported on the death of civilians which were killed in US-led coalition strikes. The coalition regularly carries out airstrikes in Deir ez-Zor region.

US demands ISIS handover 40 tons of gold in eastern Euphrates region: monitor

[AlMasdar] The Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL/IS/Daesh) is currently on their last legs in the eastern region of the Euphrates River Valley as their recent string of losses have left them confined to a small pocket in eastern Deir Ezzor.

In addition to their hundreds of fighters in this eastern Euphrates pocket, the Islamic State is also in possession of 40 tons of gold, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Tuesday.

According to the SOHR report, the U.S. Coalition is attempting to force the Islamic State to surrender their last positions and all of the stolen gold currently in their possession.

The SOHR report added that if the Islamic State hands over the gold to the U.S. Coalition forces in the eastern Euphrates region, their commanders will be given safe passage to an undisclosed location.

ISIS is currently under heavy attack by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and U.S. Coalition at the town of Baghouz; thus far, they have managed to repel all of the infiltration attempts by the latter.

Israel confirms strike in Syrian Golan, further cracking ambiguity policy, Syria reinforces border
[IsraelTimes] Before heading to anti-Iran conference in Poland, Netanyahu says IDF is fighting Iranian entrenchment in Syria ’every day, including yesterday’.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday confirmed that Israel had carried out a military strike in the Syrian Golan Heights the night before, further breaking from Israel’s previous policy of ambiguity around its activities against Iran in Syria.

On Monday night, Syrian state media reported that Israel had shelled targets in the deserted Syrian city of Quneitra.

According to the state-run SANA news agency, an Israeli tank or tanks shelled an abandoned hospital in Quneitra and a nearby observation post.

Quneitra lies just across the border on the Golan Heights, in the demilitarized zone between the countries.

According to SANA, the shelling caused material damage but no casualties.

Israeli military news hounds were told that the strike targeted Iranian-backed Shiite snuffies trying to set up a base of operations near the Israeli border. The tank shelling was also meant to serve as a warning to Syria and other Iranian proxies that Israel would not tolerate Tehran’s efforts to establish a permanent military presence in the Syrian Golan.

Syrian Army reinforces border along occupied Golan Heights

For the first time since their military operation in the Al-Quneitra Governorate, the Syrian Arab Army has reinforced the border of the occupied Golan Heights, a source told Al-Masdar News.

According to the source, the Syrian Arab Army’s 5th Division sent reinforcements to the area near the 90th Brigade base in the Al-Quneitra Governorate.

Reinforcements from the National Defense Forces (NDF) in Dara’a were also redeployed to this front as the Syrian Arab Army’s High Command takes several measures to beef up their defenses.

This move by the Syrian Arab Army’s High Command comes just 24 hours after they placed their air defense forces on high alert across western Syria.

Before and after satellite images of Syrian air defenses near Damascus Airport

[AlMasdar] Russia’s Directorate 4 channel on Telegram released two satellite images this week of the Syrian air defense positions after they were struck by the Israeli Air Force on January 21st.

As shown in the images below, the Syrian air defense positions around the Damascus International Airport were mostly destroyed after the Israeli attack:
Images at the link. I can’t tell the difference, but I’m willing to believe there is one.
The Israeli attack on January 21st was their first major assault on the Syrian military’s positions this year.

Initially, the Syrian military was able to repel a small Israeli Air Force attack on a garrison near Al-Kisweh during the day on January 21st; however, once a shell landed in the occupied Golan Heights, the Israeli Air Force responded with a large series of strikes.

[Rudaw] NEAR BAGHOUZ, Syria - Exhausted families trudged out of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group's last bastion in eastern Syria Tuesday, as Kurdish-led forces boxed holdout jihadists into an ever-shrinking pocket.

Hundreds fled at night but hundreds more during the day as plumes of grey smoke billowed into the sky over Baghouz, where diehard ISIS fighters are making their last stand.
