Ethnic clashes in Darfur could reignite Sudan's old conflict
[AlAhram] A transitional military-civilian government is now in power, trying to end decades-long rebellions in various parts of the country, since a popular uprising led to al-Bashir's ouster

Sayid Ismael Baraka, a Sudanese-American visiting from Atlanta, was playing with his three children, and his wife was making tea, when the button men stormed into his family village in Sudan's Darfur region.

The button men went through the village of Jabal, shooting people. The 36-year-old Baraka was shot to death as he rushed to help a maimed neighbor, his wife and brother said. The attack on Jan. 16 left more than two dozen dead in and around the village.

They were among 470 people killed in a days-long explosion of violence between Arab and non-Arab tribes last month in Darfur. The bloodletting stoked fears that Darfur, scene of a vicious war in the 2000s, could slide back into conflict and raised questions over the government's efforts to implement a peace deal and protect civilians.

Baraka's wife, Safiya Mohammed, blamed the attack on ``militias and janjaweed'' _ a name that harkens back to dark times for Darfur.

The Arab militias known as janjaweed became notorious in 2003 and 2004 for their terror campaigns, killing and raping civilians, when the Khartoum government unleashed them to put down an insurgency by Darfur's non-Arab residents. Some 300,000 people were killed and 2.7 million were displaced, before the violence gradually declined.

A transitional military-civilian government is now in power, trying to end decades-long rebellions in various parts of the country, since a popular uprising led to the ouster of longtime autocrat Omar al-Bashir
...Former President-for-Life of Sudan He came to power in 1989 when he, as a brigadier in the Sudanese army, led a group of officers in a bloodless military coup that ousted the government of Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi and eventually appointed himself head cheese. He fell out with his Islamic mentor, Hasan al-Turabi, tried to impose shariah on the Christian and animist south, resulting in its secessesion, and attempted to Arabize Darfur by unleashing the barbaric Janjaweed on it. Sudan's potential prosperity has been pissed away in warfare that has left as many as 400,000 people dead and 2.5 million displaced. He was overthrown by popular consent in 2019. Omar has been indicted for genocide by the International Criminal Court but nothing is expected to come of it...
in April 2019.

The latest burst of violence came just two weeks after the joint U.N.-African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
peacekeeping force that had been in Darfur for a decade ended its mandate, at the request of the transitional government. It was replaced with a much smaller, political mission.

“Anyone could have predicted that as soon as the U.N. troops departed, some of these militias would begin attacking,'' said John Prendergast, co-founder of The Sentry, an organization that tracks corruption and human rights
One man's rights are another man's existential threat.
violations in Africa.

The bloodshed followed a familiar scenario: a dispute between two people or a minor crime turning into all-out ethnic festivities. It first grew out of a fistfight on Jan. 15 between two men in a camp for displaced people in Genena, the capital of West Darfur province . An Arab man was stabbed to death. The suspect, from the African Massalit tribe, was arrested, but the dead man's family, from the Arab Rizeigat tribe, subsequently attacked people in the Krinding camp and other areas across Genena.

Three days later, festivities renewed in South Darfur province between Rizeigat and the non-Arab Falata tribe over the killing of a shepherd in al-Twaiyel village.

The fighting in the two provinces killed around 470 people, including Baraka and three aid workers, according to the United Nations
...an idea whose time has gone...
and local officials. More than 120,000 people, mostly women and kiddies, fled their homes, including at least 4,300 who crossed into neighboring Chad, the U.N. said. The transitional government deployed additional troops to West Darfur and South Darfur to try to contain the situation.

Mohammed Osman, a Sudan researcher at Human Rights Watch, said witnesses said the government forces' response was too little, too late. ``The government repeated promises of protecting civilians and holding perpetrators accountable,'' he said.

A government front man didn't answer repeated calls and messages seeking comment.

War first erupted in Darfur in 2003 when non-Arab Africans rebelled, accusing the Arab-dominated government in Khartoum of discrimination. al-Bashir's government is accused of retaliating by arming local nomadic Arab tribes and unleashing the janjaweed on civilians _ a charge it denies.

The International Criminal Court charged al-Bashir with war crimes and genocide over Darfur, but it remains unclear whether the transitional government will hand him over to face justice in The Hague, Netherlands.

In December, the joint U.N.-African Union envoy for Darfur, Jeremiah Mamabolo, cautioned that mistrust still runs deep in Darfur.

The people of Darfur ``have been betrayed,'' Mamabolo told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named. ``A lot of crimes and injustice have been committed against them, so they feel insecure.''

Last year, the transitional government struck a peace deal in October with the Sudan Revolutionary Front, a coalition of several armed rebel groups _ including from the Darfur region.

The government and rebel groups have said they will deploy a 12,000-strong Civilian Protection Force to the region. But some worry it could include former militia members who may have taken part in atrocities.

Baraka's brother, Usumain Baraka, who settled in Israel,
...are the Israelis aware of his presence?
is skeptical the interim rulers can bring about peace. ``The current government of Sudan is run by former generals who designed and carried out the genocide in 2003,'' he said.

Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, the deputy head of Sudan's ruling sovereign council, leads the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, which grew out of the Darfur militias. Rights groups say his forces burned villages and raped and killed civilians during a series of counterinsurgency campaigns over the last decade.

A report by U.N. experts covering March to December said tribal festivities and attacks on civilians increased sharply ``in both frequency and scale,'' particularly in South Darfur and West Darfur. Acts of sexual and gender-based violence continue to be committed daily and go unaddressed, the report found.

For Baraka's family, his death has shattered their plans for the future.

Baraka fled Darfur when the war began, going first to Chad, then Libya and Ghana. From there, he was resettled as a refugee in the U.S., where he gained citizenship in 2015. In Atlanta, he ran a trucking business, his brother said, through which he supported his extended family in Sudan. He was also studying to become a medical assistant.

``He was the backbone of our family,'' said his brother.

Baraka had married his wife on a trip home to Jabal, where she had their children. He had arrived in December to register his newly born third child at the American Embassy and start the process of bringing all of them to the United States _ now that the Trump administration ban on travel from Sudan has ended.

Now those plans are gone, said his wife.

``Nothing remains but memories,'' she said.

Al-Shabaab targets AU troops' base in Somalia
[Garowe] The al-Shabaab
...... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
bandidos forces of Evil on Monday targeted a strategic Forward Operating Base in Middle Shabelle, the latest attack against the loyal forces serving with the African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
Mission in Somalia which is responsible for the security tasks in the war-torn nation.

Sources said the bandidos forces of Evil raided Raaxoi Forward Operating Base which is located near Bal'ad town, at least 30 kilometers North of Mogadishu, the troubled Somali capital. The fighting lasted for several hours but no casualties have been reported so far.

The exchange of fire lasted for some time before the African Union Mission Forces and Somali National Army [SNA] stamped authority, further changing the discourse. The bandidos forces of Evil retreated after the team managed to repulse their sinister motive which would have rather been catastrophic.

It was not the first time the al-Shabaab were targeting security forces in the country especially those serving in AMISOM. A few weeks ago, the bandidos forces of Evil raided Æthiopian National Defense Forces [ENDF] base in the Gedo region, leaving at least two soldiers dead.

Later, the team attacked a base belonging to Djiboutian troops in Middle Shebelle, but the forces managed to repulse them. There have been similar attempts targeting the Kenya Defense Forces which serve in Jubaland, a troubled region in the country.

Currently, Æthiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Djibouti, and Burundi are some of the force contributing nations in Somalia. However,
you can observe a lot just by watching...
the troops might leave by the end of this year once the AMISOM team fully implements the Somali Transition Plan which outlines how the SNA troops will take charge.

The al-Shabaab bandidos forces of Evil still control large swathes of rural central and southern Somalia, which is, however, being retaken by loyal forces. The al-Shabaab group is fighting to topple the fragile UN-backed Somalia administration.

Mozambique: Terrorist Commanders Killed
[AllAfrica] The Mozambican defence and security forces have killed six ringleaders of the islamist turbans operating in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, according to a report in "Noticias de Defesa", an unofficial website that supports the Mozambican forces.
Update at 6:20 p.m. ET based on finally exploring the Related articles, specifically this from last November: Mozambique’s particular Lions of Islam call themselves Al Shabaab. But they have no connection to the Somali group of the same name, and pledged themselves to ISIS. They’ve killed more than 2,000 people since appearing in 2017, while more than 400,000 others have fled beyond their area of operation.
One of those killed was a Tanzanian national, and two were described as "Arabs". The operations in which they were killed took place in Macomia and Muidumbe districts, where the defence forces are driving turbans out of their hideouts.

The "Noticias de Defesa" source says the turbans are running short of supplies, and some of their main bases have been dismantled. As a result members of the terrorist groups are now deserting.

Three of the young terrorist recruits have abandoned the Cabo Delgado bush and plan to apply for the amnesty promised by President Filipe Nyusi to those who voluntarily leave the terrorist ranks. The three were apparently recruited in the neighbouring province of Nampula, and efforts are being made to return them safely to their home district of Memba.

Police sources said that recruits have been attracted to the terrorist cause, not because of any religious or ideological conviction, but because they have been promised large sums of money.

These reports are in line with claims made in late January that the jihadists are running out of food. A man who beat feet from a terrorist camp in Manilha village, in Mocimboa da Praia district, told the independent newssheet "Carta de Mocambique" that "there are no conditions for survival" in the islamist bases.

There is no more food, he said, and the turbans can no longer steal food from villagers, because they have all fled from the area.

This survivor claimed there had been a meeting in January between the local jihadists, and a Tanzanian citizen, apparently the commander of the group. The Tanzanian said they could no longer carry out armed attacks, because there was no money.

He advised the Mozambicans to return to their places of origins. The Mozambicans protested that this was impossible - they feared for their lives, if they were to show their faces in their home villages.

Senegal Uncovers Jihadist Cell in East of Country
[AnNahar] Senegal
... a nation of about 14 million on the west coast of Africa bordering Mauretania to the north, Mali to the east, and a pair of Guineas to the south, one of them Bissau. It is 90 percent Mohammedan and has more than 80 political parties. Its primary purpose seems to be absorbing refugees...
ese authorities have foiled a jihadist cell linked to al-Qaeda-affiliated murderous Moslems in Mali, a leading newspaper in the West African state reported on Monday.

Gendarmes arrested four men in late January in the eastern town of Kidira, which lies on the border with Senegal's war-torn neighbor Mali, according to the Liberation newspaper.

A shopkeeper who has been under surveillance for two years was among the men who were arrested, it added.

The shopkeeper's telephone number reportedly appeared on a Whatsapp group linked to the Katiba Macina jihadist group.

Although he denies affiliation with the group, he is suspected of acting as a recruiter inside Senegal.

Katiba Macina is one of the key gangs in al-Qaeda-aligned Group to Support Islam and Moslems (GSIM) -- which is one of the largest jihadist alliances operating in Mali.

Mali has been struggling to contain an Islamist insurgency which first emerged in 2012, killing thousands of soldiers and civilians and displacing hundreds of thousands more.

The conflict has since spread to neighboring Burkina Faso

and Niger, inflaming ethnic tensions along the way.

Senegal has so far been spared jihadist attacks.

However the United Nations

Security Council warned in a report this month that GSIM figures "have established themselves in Senegal."

The head of La Belle France's external intelligence agency, Bernard Emie, also said this month that GSIM is seeking to expand in Ivory Coast and Benin.

The four men arrested in Kidira were due to attend a hearing with a public prosecutor in Senegal's capital Dakar on Monday, according to Liberation newspaper, on suspicion of criminal association and supporting acts of terrorism.

Neither the Senegalese gendarmes, public prosecutor nor the justice ministry immediately responded to questions from AFP about the case.

5 Detained For Death Threats To French Teen Who Criticized Islam As ‘Religion Of Hate'
[Daily Caller] Five people were arrested in France on suspicion that they made death threats to a teenager who lambasted Islam on social media last year, numerous sources reported.
thus proving her right
The five were suspected of cyber harassment and issuing death threats after an investigation by France’s national task force that monitors online hate speech, according to France 24. Mila, the now 17-year-old French teen who received the threats, was put under police protection with her family early last year after she rebuked Islam as a "religion of hate" on Instagram.

Those detained are between the ages of 18 and 29 and are from different regions of France, according to the BBC.

Mila reignited a debate about free speech in France nearly five years after jihadists massacred cartoonists at Charlie Hebdo magazine due to cartoon portrayals of the Prophet Mohammed, and several months before several other terrorist attacks took place in France.

In her Instagram footage that provoked the backlash, she was doing her makeup and began informing those watching that she was a lesbian and "blacks and Arabs" were not her type after receiving messages complimenting her and asking if she would divulge her age, she told the host of French talk show Le Quotidien.

422 Migrants Colonists Arrive in Italy from Libya
More Crazy Eddies, helpfully working hard in ways that make the situation significantly worse.
[LibyaReview] On Sunday, Italian authorities allowed a rescue vessel carrying 422 migrants colonists from Libya to dock at the Augusta port in Sicily. The migrants colonists were allowed to disembark in Italia following distress calls made by the boat in wake of a recent storm.

The Ocean Viking rescue ship is operated by the NGO, SOS Mediterranee and part of the European Association for Rescue in the Mediterranean Sea missions. It requested help on multiple occasions before they were finally allowed to disembark by the Italian government.

Last month, the Italian NGO Centro Astalli, reiterated its appeal for the immediate evacuation of migrants colonists from Libya, after 43 migrants colonists died in a shipwreck off the coast of Libya. Centro Astalli said it "expresses condolences for the victims" of the shipwreck, the first of its kind in 2021, "and deep concern for the conditions of the migrants colonists trying to arrive in Europa
...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
without the chance to access legal entrance routes."

"It is clear that there is a very serious problem of border management on the part of European states and an intolerable inertia on the part of national and supranational organizations," Father Camillo Ripamonti, President of Centro Astalli said.

Libya has become the preferred point of departure for thousands wishing to cross the Mediterranean towards Europe. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that about 12,000 migrants colonists were intercepted at sea, and returned to Libya in 2020.

#3  ^ The Indian people actually love this sort of publicity. They get to believe their State is actually harassing those moslem bastards. Some people will read the DAWN just to see what new, delicious mayhem has been attributed to India.

Now, even the Indian media has begun to overplay the details. If a shack is burnt in the 'Stain they'll go 'Curious explosion caused in an enemy installation last night, the secret agencies were unavailable for comment.'

Indian lawyers won't fight for Afghan assets anyway, if they are that.

Shangla police arrest terrorist in Karachi
[Dawn] The Shangla police claim to have arrested a wanted terrorist during a raid in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
A statement issued here on Tuesday, said Abdul Satar of Lilonai, an alleged Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
commander, had carried out attacks on police and government installations, and managed to escape to Karachi, where he had been living along with his family for last 14 years.
The ISI must be really concerned about the country the Pakistani arm owns falling from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list to the black list if they’re digging up old lags like this one.
It said that district police officer Rahim Shah Khan had sent a team led by SDPO Mohammad Fazil Khan and SHO Arif Khan to Karachi where he was arrested.

The statement said the police had information about his hideout. The terrorist is wanted to police under sections 364, 148, 149, 448, 120A, 121 and 124A of the ATA.

terror group in the ancient town of Palmyra in 2015, according to the BBC.

The jihadists murdered 81-year-old Khaled al-Asaad, after he refused to divulge where some of the town’s treasures had been hidden.
The man was a hero, quietly stymieing the ISIS invaders while they tortured him to death, neither surrendering without a fight nor fleeing without any attempt to fight back at a time when almost everyone else was doing both.
Two other bodies have been found near Palmyra by Syrian forces. All three are set to undergo DNA identification.
