Taliban fighters planned to attack ANDSF outposts in Khan Abad, Timurk, and Mesgaran villages of Chahar Bolak district of Balkh province, Arghandab and Dand districts of Kandahar province and in Bakhmal Kocha area of Imam Sahib district in Kunduz province, MoD reported.

According to the statement, Afghan national defense and security forces rebuffed the planned Taliban attack by killing 15 of the group’s affiliated members in Balkh, 25 in Kandahar, and 12 others in Kunduz province.

MoD said in the statement, that more than 20 Taliban were maimed in Balkh, three in Kandahar and six others in Kunduz province

The bombs were placed with an intention to hurt civilians and soldiers, the corps’ engineering team defused the bomb before it could inflict injuries to the public, MoD stated.

Al-Shabaab fires mortar shells in key town after top leaders arrived
[Garowe] The al-Shabaab
...... al-Qaeda's tentacle in East Africa...
holy warriors fired mortar shells in Dhusamareeb, the regional administrative capital of Galmadug, where the country's leaders are set to meet to discuss the pre-election standoff which has delayed elections in the Horn of Africa nation.

Reports indicate that the holy warriors fired at least 7 mortar rounds at the town just moments after the arrival of PM Mohammed Hussein Roble and President Farmajo, who are expected to chair a three-day meeting that aims at seeking a lasting solution to the electoral crisis.

At least four injuries reported after al-Shabaab holy warriors targeted Dhusamareb town with mortar shells last night. The mortars, sources said, hit residential areas just hours after Mohammed Farmajo and his PM Roble arrived in the town on Monday.
Somalia on Tuesday killed three Al-Shabaab Lions of Islam who carried out a mortar attack aimed at targeting a high-level government delegation in the central city of Dhusamareb, local media reported.

A barrage of mortar shells fired by the gunnies on Monday injured a police officer and civilians in Dhusamareb, where the Somali president and prime minister arrived to attend a conference on the country’s next elections.

According to the Somali state-run broadcaster, security forces rubbed out three attackers, including a senior al-Shabaab member, and injured another. They also arrested two attackers.

The state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
showed pictures of the arrested bully boys. It also displayed heavy machine guns and other weapons seized from the al-Qaeda-affiliated terror group.

The attack came a day after al-Shabaab snuffies killed at least 10 people, including a retired army general and former Defense Minister Mohammed Nuur Galal in the capital Mogadishu.

Earlier this week following pressure from the international community, President Mohammed Abdullahi Mohammed called on regional leaders to attend a three-day consultative summit in the city to resolve outstanding issues over the holding of timely and credible elections in the country.

The president’s mandate will expire on Feb. 8, and the country has already missed the deadline for parliamentary elections twice.

India-Pakistan
Israeli Delhi embassy bomb: National Investigation Agency registers case, police busily following leads
Iran, ISIS, or Al Qaeda? One of them (probably) sponsored it... And is Kenya a connection or a feint? Tune in again, dear Reader, when more will be revealed by India’s NIA (with the Mossad labouring quietly in the shadows).[OneIndia] The anti- terror probe agency National Investigation Agency (NIA) is likely to take up probe in connection with the minor blast near the Israeli Embassy.

A team of NIA officials had already visited the blast site on Friday evening and had collected evidence materials. The officials also carried out complete mapping of the area to identify the route and the persons involved in the blast.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police's Special Cell is questioning some people, including a few Iranian nationals on Saturday.

A team from the National Bomb Data Centre (NBDC) of the NSG visited the spot for post-blast analysis, a senior officer said, adding that the findings will be shared with the Delhi Police team investigating the case.

The minor blast took place on Friday evening in a high-security zone of the national capital. No one was injured.

An envelope addressed to the Israeli Embassy and containing a note was found at the site of the blast, sources had said. It had reportedly suggest an Iranian link to the incident.

A case has been registered and the Special Cell is investigating the matter.

As of February 1st, One India reports the police are busily following leads: interviewing people, and combing through cell phone data. Unfortunately, it was discovered that most of the nearby CCTV cameras do not work despite the fact that the embassy is in a high security area.
There is also a very strong possibility that the blast could be linked to the one that took place on February 13, 2012.
That one was definitely Iran...
We are not ruling out any possibility, the official cited above also said.

Investigators are also looking at the role of a group called the Jaish-ul-Hind. A person by the name Vikar had claimed responsibility for the blast on a Telegram group in the ISIS forum that is linked to the Qayam Foundation.
A quick search of “Qayam Foundation” leads to a Facebook page proclaiming that the foundation is a charity founded in Kenya to support and educate Muslim youth, and that there now is a branch in Punjab — though whether they mean India or Pakistan is not clear. Facebook lists several related pages in Nairobi, one of which links to the Ummah Foundation, whose goals are literacy and economic self-sufficiency for Kenyan Muslims, and motivating Muslims in Kenya to practice pure Islam — Facebook greasing the progression to radicalization. Both the Muslim Brotherhood and the Islamic Society (Jamaat-e-Islami), which feed cannon fodder to jihadi groups, have become influential in Kenya in recent decades, separate from the predations of Al Shabaab.
The internet protocol address has been traced to Herat
...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns...
in Afghanistan. However this angle needs to be thoroughly probed as it could be a false flag, officials say.
On February 2nd the NIA officially took charge, repeating all that had been said on the subject previously.

The political debate in Israel triggers a secret war between intelligence agencies

Published 2 days ago on February 2, 2021
By Giancarlo Elia Valori

Since the birth of the State of Israel in 1948, the young democracy–imported by force of arms into what Lord Balfour had defined in 1917 as the “Jewish national home” in Palestine – has distinguished itself for being permanently characterized by a lively, heated and polemical political debate.

Since its foundation the old Socialist Mapam Party of David Ben Gurion, the first Israeli Head of State, has clashed with the political-religious soul of fundamentalist Hebraism, that of the “Chassidim” who even denied that a State of Israel should be established, without waiting for the “coming of the Messiah”.

Over the decades, the Socialist spirit of the founders of the State of Israel has gradually faded and today two groups are in power, a right-wing one and a centrist one, the Likud and the Blue and White Party respectively. They are headed by two leading figures: the Likudis led by the historical and longstanding leader, Benjamin Netanyahu, and the “Blue and White Party” by the former Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Benny Gantz.

They have been in power together since March last year, but their coexistence in the coalition government has evidently proved more difficult than expected, to the point that on December 22, 2020 a government crisis broke out and was declared officially. Israel’s Parliament, namely the Knesset was dissolved and a new election was called for next March, i.d. less than a year before the scheduled one.

Netanyahu is facing an investigation on corruption charges and has always maintained he is the victim of a politicised judiciary. He claimed:“the Likud Party does not want elections. We have always voted against these elections. Unfortunately, Benny Ganz has reneged on the agreements”.

Ganz, for his part, replied that the Prime Minister’s statements were “just lies” and that Netanyahu was aiming for early elections “to avoid being prosecuted”.

Hard and irreconcilable stances which – in a small country like Israel in which politics, institutions and society are strongly integrated – have had direct consequences also within the powerful Intelligence Community, which is so intrinsically connected to the other institutions, that it immediately feels the echoes of the political debate.

The Israeli “Intelligence Community” is based on three pillars of proven and acknowledged efficiency: Mossad, the National Intelligence Agency operating abroad with tasks of espionage and counter-terrorism; Shin Bet, the Internal Security Service in charge of counter-espionage and counter-terrorism within the national borders; Aman, the Military Intelligence Service.

The simple and pragmatic system entrusts to the two “civilian” Services geographically differentiated tasks, while Aman performs not only specific military intelligence tasks, but also strategic analysis ones and operates in close coordination with the two civilian Services.

In other words, Mossad and Shin Bet have not their own analysis departments and rely on their Aman colleagues, who are responsible for providing the government with reliable evaluation frameworks on all issues of strategic importance.

With a view to understanding how the system has functioned over the years, it suffices to go back to the 1973 Yom Kippur War when, in early October, Israel was attacked simultaneously and suddenly by Egypt and Syria, and for about ten days it had its back to the wall before regaining the initiative and succeeding in turning the tide of the conflict.

During those days all observers, at home and abroad, wondered why the renowned Israeli Intelligence Services had not been able to anticipate the enemy’s moves, despite having extensive and deep intelligence networks in the adversary’s camp.

The answer came from the “Agranat” Inquiry Commission, established by the then Head of State, Golda Meir, which ascertained that intelligence on the Egyptian and Syrian intentions and preparatory moves had actually been gathered, but that the Aman analysts deemed it not sufficient to declare a general alert and warn the government of the imminent danger.

The fiasco cost the Military Service Director his job.

Since then, the liaison and cooperation between the three Services has become closer and more efficient, with excellent results in terms of coordination between intelligence and government and Israel’s ability to effectively respond to internal threats or to those coming from foreign enemies.

All this until to date.

In recent weeks, in fact, reliable Israeli sources have reported that the Israeli Intelligence Services have got involved in the debate opposing Benjamin Netanyahu and Benny Ganz on the vital strategic issue of Iran, not only on the decisions to be taken at economic and health levels, but also on the attitude to have towards Iran’s nuclear policy and Iranian interests in the Middle East, in general, and in the Lebanon and Syria, in particular.

While both the Mossad and Aman are waiting to see the first actions the new Biden Administration will take with regard to the Iranian nuclear programme, the Head of the Research Division of Israel’s Military Intelligence Directorate, Dror Shalom, with the support of his Chief, Tamir Hayman – very close to Benny Ganz – has indicated to the government it would be desirable to have a “softer” attitude towards Iran, even suggesting Israel’s direct participation, alongside the United States, in the possible resumption of negotiations with Iran on limiting the nuclear ambitions of the Ayatollah’s regime.

Benny Ganz, who was Chief of Staff until 2015, has maintained a close relationship with Aman and the entire military establishment and called for a more moderate attitude towards Iran, also during the election campaign.

Aman‘s move has deeply irritated the Mossad leadership that, in line with Netanyahu’s position, wants to maintain a hard line vis-à-vis Iran, which is still considered a strategic threat to the State of Israel.

Almost as if he wanted to respond to the moves of his political opponent, Netanyahu has extended until next June the appointment of Yossi Cohen as Director of Mossad, who planned and organised the sequence of murders of Iranian scientists involved in nuclear research (on November27 last, Moshen Fakrizadeh, the Head of the nuclear programme, was assassinated on the outskirts of Tehran).

Yossi Cohen will be replaced by another figure loyal to Netanyahu, the current Head of Mossad‘s Operations Department, currently known only as “Mr.D”, who is expected to follow in his predecessor’s footsteps in the strategy of extremely harsh opposition to the Iranian nuclear programme, even in spite of the possible future moderate attitude of the new American President, Joseph Biden.

Therefore, while the Military Intelligence Service, which monopolizes the strategic analysis of the entire Israeli Intelligence Community, takes the field in support of the foreign policy of the centrist candidate in the upcoming elections, Benny Ganz, Mossad sides decisively with his opponent, the current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is an advocate of an increasingly harsh attitude towards Iran’s nuclear dream and its expansionist aims in Syria, the Lebanon and Iraq.

Therefore Mossad keeps on planning future eliminations of Iranian scientists and providing the Armed Forces with accurate data on the Iranian positions in Syria and on the targets to be attacked. In this regard, last December the Chief of Staff of Tsahal (Israel Defense Forces), Avin Kochavi, stated that the Iranian military presence has been progressively reduced thanks to targeted bombings.

Aman “prefers” to continue cyberattacks on Iran with its “Unit 8200”, along the lines of the successful cyberattack on the control system of the Iranian nuclear centrifuges carried out years ago with the inoculation of the “Stuxnet” virus in the adversary system.

An all-Israeli paradox: aggressive civilians and moderate military.

It is unfortunate, however, that this paradox is not part of a confidential political dialectic, but has entered by force even the election campaign.

#3  Interesting article, Clem. I would argue that Bibi knew exactly what he was doing when he proposed that Benny Gantz take the second shift of the joint prime ministership, and Benny allowed himself to be played.

I would also argue that Israel’s generals are being idiots. First to get involved in politics so blatantly, just because they loathe Bibi, while Benny is part of their In Crowd. And second to think that Iran is not an existential threat, just because Israel has been able to hold it off thus far.

2 JeM terrorists, 4 of their associates held in J&K
[OneIndia] Two newly recruited bully boyz and four terrorist associates of Jaish-e-Mohammad
...literally Army of Mohammad, a Pak-based Deobandi terror group founded by Maulana Masood Azhar in 2000, after he split with the Harkat-ul-Mujaheddin. In 2002 the government of Pervez Musharraf banned the group, which changed its name to Khaddam ul-Islam and continued doing what it had been doing before without missing a beat...
(JeM) and its offshoot Lashkar-e-Mustafa (LeM) were arrested in Jammu and Kashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there....
on Saturday, police said.

Acting on specific inputs regarding terrorist attacks being planned in Anantnag and Bijbehara towns by the LeM, the police along with the Army established special checking points at multiple locations and conducted intensive checking, a police spokesperson said.

At one of the checkpoints at Donipora in Bijbehera, officers intercepted a car with two persons onboard. The two tried to flee but were apprehended tactfully by the alert forces, he said.
For a given value of tactful that possibly involved bamboo staves connecting hardly with their persons...
"They have been identified as Imran Ahmed Hajam, a resident of Nathpora Khanabal, and Irfan Ahmed Ahanger, a resident of Nandpora Khanabal. Both had recently joined terrorist ranks and were affiliated with proscribed terror outfit LeM/JeM," the spokesperson said.
It is the job of Red Shirts and cannon fodder to get caught. This is understood. After all, it is only by repeatedly not getting caught that one graduates to an actual number in the organization, on the path to emir with two henchmen on the operations side or Number 4 with a colour blind trainee guaranteed to confuse the red and green wires for those on the technical path.
Incriminating material, arms and ammunition including two pistols, three magazines and 116 rounds were recovered from their possession, he said.
Alternately, a stint in prison, being tutored by more advanced peers, has been known to advance the survivor’s career by several steps up the ladder.
The spokesperson said during the questioning, the arrested persons revealed that the LeM was recently floated to give an impression that terrorism in Kashmir is home-grown and not sponsored by Pakistain.
”Such a clever idea, Mr. General Effendi, sir! Those stupid hinjoos in IOK will never catch on that it’s a ruse — and we have the perfect patsy ready to name himself the Number 1!”
"They further revealed that they are close associates of Hidayat Malik alias Hasnain, a resident of Sharafpora Shopian and the self-styled chief of LeM;
...he looks the perfect villain: black cape and shiny top hat, twirly mustaches, and laughs menacingly at every opportunity. Oh, and an IQ of 15...
Umer alias Wahid Khan, a resident of Shopian; and Aftab alias Ali Bhai, a resident of Dachipora.
...ordinary henchmen (3rd class), those two, to set the proper tone...
"They said they were conducting recce of the area to plant an IED in order to target security forces and the police," he said.
...any number of Xs, but only one will be the final Spot...
During the course of investigation, four terrorist associates of JeM were arrested from different locations, the spokesperson said.
It’s India. They haven't yet mastered vanishing as if they’d never been there at all. In Bangladesh the Rapid Action Battalions have acted to speed the evolution of even common miscreants.
They have been identified as Bilal Ahmed Kumar, Tawfeeq Ahmed Lawey, Muzamil Ahmed Wani and Aadil Ahmed Rather.
All three-namers, which in Bangladesh would make them solidly middle class. But as this is India, it probably just means their mothers had ideas above their station.
Incriminating material, ammunition including two grenades, 30 AK-47 rounds and 1 kg of kaboom were recovered from their possession, he said.
Not a single round of bullet, shined lovingly by the newest police recruit and kept in its velvet case in the evidence lockup between being sent to various Spots to be found by gruff Sgt. Iqbal and his merry men, no shutter gun, no crossfire deaths, but actual weapons that can be bought on the illegal black market? In this, at least, the Indians are more sophisticated.

Shahdat is our Goal: NIA picks up key terrorist from Tamil Nadu
[OneIndia] The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a terrorist belonging to a Jihadi gang called Shahdat is our Goal.

The NIA picked up Mohammad Rashid aged 25, who is a resident of Cuddalore district in Tamil Nadu.

The case was originally registered at the Keelakarai Police Station in Ramnathapuram district of Tamil Nadu after the arrest of accused Mohamed Rifas, Muparish Ahamed and Abupakkar Sithik from Keelakarai.

Lethal weapons including swords along with pamphlets pertaining to the terrorist gang were seized from the possession of the accused persons.

Searches were conducted by NIA at the premises of the accused persons in May, 2019
...the mills of Justice are grinding exceedingly slowly in this case...
and Mohammed Rashid was identified as an active member of the terrorist gang. Scrutiny of forensically retrieved data from the seized digital devices and their e-mail and social media accounts, has revealed that the accused persons including Mohammed Rashid, had conducted multiple conspiracy meetings under leadership of Sheik Dawood and Mohammed Rifas with the intention of waging violent mostly peaceful jihad in Tamil Nadu, as part of their efforts to establish Islamic rule (Shariah). The accused, in pursuance of the conspiracy, had also attempted to procure illegal fire arms. Further investigations are on.

Iraq
1 civilian female wounded in Turkish airstrike in Raparin
SULAIMANI — A 40-year-old civilian woman was wounded when Turkish warplanes bombed the outskirts of the village of Shene in the Raparin administration’s Halsho sub-district late on Tuesday morning (February 2).

NRT reporter Sabr Adulla said that warplanes bombed the vicinity of the village five times, including targets approximately 500 meters away from the center of the village.

The wounded woman was rushed to a hospital in Qaladze.

Local residents told NRT that their houses had been damaged in the attack.

Shene village is 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) away from the center of Qaladze district, near the Iranian border.

Turkey regularly carries out cross-border operations in northern Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, justifying its actions as necessary to combat the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which has waged a decades-long insurgency for Kurdish rights in Turkey’s southeast.

Following the airstrikes, Turkish Defense Ministry tweeted that ten Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) fighters were naturalized, a term used by the Turkish authorities to mean surrender, killed or captured, in northern Iraq’s Qandil mountain range where the PKK members are based.

Kurds and Regime End Rival Sieges in Northern Syria
Follow up to this story from two days ago.
[AnNahar] Kurdish forces in northern Syria ended a weekslong siege of regime-held neighborhoods in two northeastern cities Tuesday, they said, as part of a deal brokered by Russia.

As part of the agreement with Kurdish forces, Syrian regime troops allowed supplies to enter Kurdish-held areas in the northern province of Aleppo, an opposition activist group reported.

The deal to end the sieges by regime forces and Kurdish fighters in different parts of the war-torn country's north came two days after Kurdish fighters shot one person dead during a pro-regime protest. The deal was brokered by Russia, an opposition war monitor said.
