Residents: Airstrike in Dasht-e-Archi, Kunduz ‘Killed Civilians Human Shields’
[ToloNews] US forces spokespeople say they are investigating civilian casualty reports; residents say the victims included "Hizb-i-Islami commander." An Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
in the Dasht-e-Archi district of Kunduz has killed "five civilians" and a "Hizb-e-Islami commander," residents say. Video sent to TOLOnews appears to show residents out in the street protesting the attack.

Earlier Friday morning spokespeople from US forces reported an airstrike in Dasht-e-Archi that "killed three Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
fighters and destroyed a small weapons cache," and later said: "We are aware of the reports of civilian casualties reported to have occurred in Dasht-e-Archi district or Imam Sahib district, Kunduz Province, on Jan. 30. We are looking into these reports and will provide more information when it becomes available."

TOLOnews was contacted earlier on Friday by a member of Hizb-e-Islami's leadership, Humayun Jarir, who said an airstrike early Friday morning had "killed Hizb-e-Islami commander Ghulam Rabbani and seven members of his family" who were targeted while "traveling by car."
Life lesson: Don’t get in a car with a bad guy if you don’t want to share his fate.
Shorter lesson: Being a human shield is dangerous.
Jarir said the airstrike was carried out in Sahib Imam district, not Dasht-e-Archi district as residents and US forces have reported.

Jarir claimed that Ghulam Rabbani was "innocent" and that he "did not have any armed fighters with him."

Local officials have not confirmed claims but said they are investigating the matter.

This story will be updated as information becomes available.

Arabia
Qassim al-Rimi, the head of al-Qaeda’s affiliate in Yemen tits up.

For those who used up their NYT free articles for the month, Yahoo has the basics:
The New York Times said three current or former U.S. officials “expressed confidence” that Qasim al-Raymi, the emir of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), was killed in Yemen, although there was no official confirmation.

U.S. forces had been tracking al-Raymi for months, and there was a $10 million price on his head.

It is unclear whether the strike was carried out by the U.S. military or the CIA. Spokespersons for U.S. Central Command, the National Security Council and the CIA declined to comment.

For more than five years, al-Raymi, a native of Yemen, had eluded U.S. forces as he led what experts sometimes refer to as al-Qaida’s “most dangerous franchise.”

Al-Raymi, 41, had been on the United States’ radar for years. After training other militants in al-Qaida training camps in Afghanistan during the 1990s, he returned to Yemen and became a commander of AQAP, according to the U.S. government’s Rewards for Justice website. In 2005 he was sentenced to five years in prison for planning to assassinate the U.S. ambassador, but he escaped the following year.

Alleged al-Qaida leader arrested in Phoenix, accused of killing two Iraqi police officers
[AZ Central] An Iraqi man who is alleged to have been the leader of a group of Al-Qaida terrorists has been arrested in Phoenix, according to federal officials.

Ali Yousif Ahmed Al-Nouri, a 42-year-old Phoenix resident, is wanted to stand trial in Iraq on charges of the premeditated murder of two Iraqi police officers, according to a statement by Michael Bailey, the U.S. Attorney for Arizona, and Brian A. Benczkowski, Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Department's Criminal Division.

Ahmed served as the leader of a group of al-Qaida terrorists in Al-Fallujah, Iraq, according to information provided by the Iraq government in support of an extradition request, the statement said.

The al-Qaida group planned operations targeting Iraqi police, the statement said.

Ahmed and other members of the al-Qaida group are accused of shooting and killing two members of the Fallujah Police Directorate, including a first lieutenant on about June 1, 2006, and a police officer on about Oct. 3, 2006, the statement said.

An Iraqi judge issued a warrant for Ahmed's arrest. As a result, the Iraq government requested his extradition from the U.S. The Justice Department subsequently filed a complaint in Phoenix seeking a warrant for Ahmed's arrest based on the extradition request, the statement said.

U.S. Magistrate Judge John Z. Boyle issued a warrant on Wednesday, Aug. 29, the statement said. Ahmed was then arrested on Thursday by the Phoenix field offices of the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations and the U.S. Marshals Service.

Iraq
Iraqi cleric condemns use of force, 11 protesters wounded
[EN.ANNAHAR] Iraq’s most powerful religious figure Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani reiterated Friday his condemnation of the use of force against anti-government protesters as the mass movement enters a critical juncture and political blocs tussle over naming a new premier.

Meanwhile,
...back at the pie fight, Bella opened her mouth at precisely the wrong moment...
influential and radical holy man Moqtada Tater al-Sadr
...hereditary Iraqi holy man and leader of a political movement in Iraq. He spends most of his time in Iran, safely out of the line of fire, where he's learning to be an ayatollah. Formerly an Iranian catspaw, though lately he's gagged over some of their more outlandish antics...
called for his followers to return to the street, one week after he withdrew support for anti-government demonstrators camped out in Baghdad’s Tahrir Square. The move comes one day before a deadline set by Iraq’s president to select the next prime minister runs out.

Al-Sistani’s comments came as unrest continued in Baghdad’s Khilani and Wathba squares, where at least 11 demonstrators were maimed Friday by security forces firing tear gas canisters to disperse crowds, according to security and medical officials. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

The area has become a flash point in the recent escalation staged by demonstrators to refocus public attention on the demands of the four-month protest movement after a U.S. Arclight airstrike

Strip shortly after Paleostinian forces of Evil fired three rockets into Israel, two of which were intercepted.

There were no reports of casualties or major damage from the exchange of fire overnight, which came amid heightened tensions after President Donald Trump
...dictatorial for repealing some (but not all) of the diktats of his predecessor, misogynistic because he likes pretty girls, homophobic because he doesn't think gender bending should be mandatory, truly a man for all seasons......
released his Mideast plan, a U.S. initiative aimed at ending the conflict that heavily favors Israel and was rejected by the Paleostinians.

Paleostinians have called for large protests after Friday prayers, including at a flashpoint holy site in Jerusalem that is sacred to Moslems and Jews. The plan contains mixed messages about the fragile understandings governing the holy site, which could provoke a backlash there.

Gaza has been relatively calm in recent months as Egyptian and U.N. mediators have worked to shore up an informal truce between Israel and Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth",, the Islamic murderous Moslem group that rules the coastal territory.

#1  After the battle of al-Hasakah in August 2016 between Kurds and the Bashar al-Assad regime, the area was mostly in People's Protection Units (YPG) control. It is the Kurdish province of Syria. There was a recent report that the USA was buiding three bases in Iraqi Kurdistan. Perhaps this is the fourth contemplated.

Leb ISF arrest activists in one day sweep
[EN.ANNAHAR] Ever since a wave of anti-government protests gripped the country, Lebanese security forces have been arresting a number of Lebanese activists on a daily basis.

Whether for helping other protesters during festivities or distributing sandwiches in the course of the uprising, a number of demonstrators have been detained or called in for questioning.

Ahmad Chehade, 19 years old, was attempting to assist one of the injured protesters during intense festivities when he got detained.

"I got stuck due to the tear gas and I couldn’t see clearly, and that’s when they took me into custody and kept hitting me until they broke my jaw," he told Annahar.

Another protester Lina Boulos Makari, was questioned in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
for handing out meals and providing transportation services.

Additionally, several members of Sabaa, a Lebanese political party, were arrested and had their phones confiscated.

In light of all these arrests, Media for Freedom, a platform for journalists, issued a statement explaining that most arrests violate the constitution as well as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

"Repressing protesters affects the principle of freedom of expression. We consider that the role of the Bar Association and President Melhem Khalaf is pivotal in these times," it stated.

In order to spread awareness, Hiba Farhat, lawyer, shared with Annahar a number of legal measures that one can take if they got arrested.

"Once someone is called in for questioning, he/she has the right to hire a lawyer, ask for more information on the reasons behind the arrest, and request the presence of a lawyer during questioning," she said.

A Twitter hashtag was also launched to support arrested Lebanese activists #اوقفوا _اعتقال_الناشطين, which translates to "stop the arrest of activists" in English.
