Airstrikes kill Taliban militants, destroy weapon cache: MOD
[KhaamaPress] Airstrikes on Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
hideouts in Nimroz and Farah provinces of Afghanistan killed 5 Talibs, MOD said in a statement.

An Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
conducted by Afghan airforce on a Taliban hideout in Khasro district of Nimroz province on Wednesday night killed at least 3 Talibs, a MOD statement said.

The statement further added that in another separate airstrike conducted in Poshtro district of Farah province, 2 Talibs were killed and a weapon cache has been destroyed.

Afghan commandos have also conducted a military operation in Qala-e-Kah district of Farah, as a result of which a Taliban bad boy has been detained, MOD said in a statement.

This comes as Mullah Haibatullah Akhund, the Chief of Taliban has recently agreed to a brief ’ceasefire’ to resume peace talks with the US delegation which is expected to reach a deal signing stage soon.

Five DABS Employees Killed In Zabul Blast
[ToloNews] At least five employees of the Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), Afghanistan’s largest power distribution company, were killed in a roadside mine blast in Zabul province on Thursday, officials said.

One other was maimed in the blast, according to officials.

The provincial governor's front man Gulsalam Siyal said the blast occurred this afternoon around 12:00 pm local time when the company employees' vehicle was hit by roadside mine in Zeyarat area of Shahr-e-Safa district.

The company also confirmed the casualties.

So far no group has grabbed credit for the incident.
Khaama Press adds:
Mohammadullah Amiri, the provincial police spokesperson, accused the Taliban
...Arabic for students...
of placing a bomb on the road in the Shahr-e-Safa district, which destroyed the vehicle, and killed the passengers.

However,
there's no worse danger than telling a mother her baby is ugly...
the Taliban did take responsibility for a roadside kabooming that killed two American service members and maimed two others in southern Afghanistan last week.

Over the last couple of years, the Taliban expanded their domain and now control roughly half of Afghanistan. They continue to attack Afghan and US forces even though peace talks and a promising agreement on a temporary ceasefire in Afghanistan is going on.

Pair with Iranian ties get prison time for illegal surveillance of Iranian opposition groups in US: DOJ
[FoxNews] Two men with Iranian backgrounds were sentenced to prison terms Wednesday after being convicted of conducting surveillance and collecting information about American citizens and U.S. nationals who are members of the group Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK), the U.S. Department of Justice said.
Formerly referred to as foreign espionage.
Ahmadreza Mohammadi-Doostdar, 39, a dual U.S.-Iranian citizen, and Majid Ghorbani, 60, an Iranian citizen and resident of California, were handed prison terms of 38 months and 30 months, respectively, the DOJ said.

U.S. District Court Judge Paul L. Friedman sentenced Doostdar to 38 months in prison as well as 36 months of supervised release and a fine of $14,153. Ghorbani was sentenced to 30 months in prison and 36 months of supervised release.

Pakistan court jails dozens of Islamists over Asia Bibi protests
[AlAhram] A Pak court has sentenced more than 80 Islamists to 55 years in prison each after protests linked to the 2018 acquittal of Asia Bibi, a Christian woman accused of blasphemy
...the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence to a deity, or sacred objects, or toward something considered sacred or inviolable. Some religions consider it to be a crime. In Pakistain you can commit blasphemy by looking cross-eyed at a Koran...
, one of their big shots told AFP.

The sentence -- an unusually harsh one in Pakistain, where blasphemy is an extremely sensitive issue -- was announced by a lower court in the garrison town of Rawalpindi on Thursday, said Pir Ejaz Ashrafi, a big shot of the Tehrik-e-Labaik Pakistain (TLP).

The Islamists were members of the radical TLP, an anti-blasphemy party which had spearheaded violent protests across Pakistain in the wake of Bibi's acquittal in late 2018.

At the time Pakistain took its leader, Khadim Hussain Rizvi, into custody as part of a broad effort to quell the unrest.

Ashrafi said 86 members of the TLP were convicted after a trial which lasted for more than a year but he argued that the protests had been against Rizvi's arrest, not Bibi's acquittal.

"This is murder of justice and the sentences given are quite ruthless and harsh," he told AFP.

Ashrafi said the party would challenge the verdict in the Lahore High Court.

Blasphemy is an incendiary charge in Moslem-majority Pakistain, where even the whiff of an unsubstantiated allegation of insulting Islam can spark death at the hands of mobs.

TLP -- or the Movement at the Service of the Prophet -- has in recent years become one of the most powerful groups in Pakistain weaponising the ultra-sensitive issue, including at the ballot box.

Rizvi had demanded the execution of Asia Bibi, a labourer from central Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

province and minority Christian who had been convicted of blasphemy in 2010 and sent to death row, but was dramatically acquitted on appeal in 2018.

Bibi now lives in Canada with her family.

Another TLP front man, who confirmed the convictions to AFP but was unsure of the numbers, said the government was trying to subdue the party.

"But they can never succeed as we are not standing for Khadim Rizvi or any organization, but for a pure Islam," he said.

Iraq
Iraqi police arrest ISIS religious official in eastern Mosul
[Kurdistan 24] Iraqi security forces on Thursday announced the arrest of a senior religious Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
official in eastern djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
Iraq’s Security Media Cell said in a statement that the Nineveh Police Command’s SWAT team arrested "a so-called sharia official and mufti of ISIS called Abu Abd al-Bari" in the Mansour neighborhood after continuous investigations and "accurate information."

Shifa al-Neama, nicknamed Abu Abd al-Bari, was allegedly working as a preacher at several mosques in the city of Mosul.

"He is known for his provocative speeches against the [Iraqi] security forces, and he was inciting affiliation and allegiance to ISIS and educating holy warrior ideology during ISIS’ control over Mosul," the Security Media Cell said.

"He is considered one of the leaders in the first row of ISIS gangs, and he is responsible for issuing fatwas regarding the execution of a number of scholars and holy mans who refrained from pledging allegiance to ISIS."

The Security Media Cell also charged the suspect for being responsible for encouraging the bombing of the Prophet Yunus mosque in July 2014.

Mosul was previously the so-called Islamic State’s stronghold when they emerged in Iraqi in mid-2014 before Iraqi forces, with support from the Kurdistan Region Peshmerga and US-led Coalition, recaptured it in July 2017.

Despite over two years having passed since Baghdad declared a final victory over the Islamic State, the group continues to conduct attacks in areas it once controlled, embarking on a wave of kidnappings, liquidations, and bombings that have raised fears of a new stage of heightened insurgency.

Iraqi security forces also arrested a "prominent terrorist" in southern Mosul, the country’s Interior Ministry announced on Tuesday.

The US military announced on late Wednesday that it had resumed joint operations with Iraqi forces against the Islamic State after operations were suspended following US-Iran

Despite billions spent on missile shields, US troops were defenseless when Iran attacked
[Washington Examiner] In the early morning darkness of Jan. 8, several thousand U.S. troops huddled in Saddam Hussein-era bunkers in western Iraq as 11 ballistic missiles rained destruction on parts of the sprawling al Asad air base ‐ Iran's promised "harsh revenge" for the killing of its top general, Qassem Soleimani, in a U.S. drone strike five days earlier.

The night sky lit up, and the bunkers shook as two waves of missiles struck over an hour and a half, sending a shockwave through the air and rattling some American troops who were above ground standing watch.

Even with the benefit of an advance warning of the attack, there was little the troops could do but duck and cover ‐ and hope it would not be their day to die.
Move quickly to your assigned, or nearest bunker and prayerfully await the 'all clear.' Sort of SOP in a combat zone.
"All is well!" President Trump tweeted when the attack was over. "So far, so good! We have the most powerful and well-equipped military anywhere in the world, by far!"

But despite well over $350 billion spent in the past three decades, when they were most needed to protect U.S. forces and potentially prevent an escalation to all-out war, America's vaunted missile defenses were missing in action.

From the tours the military gave reporters two days later, it was clear that while a warning from the Iraqis gave the United States time to disperse its forces and lower the risk of casualties, the fact that no one died or suffered more than a concussion was also due in large part to sheer luck.

#2  despite well over $350 billion spent in the past three decades, ... America's vaunted missile defenses were missing in action.

A bit misleading there, Mr Journalist. That $350 billion over 30 years represents research and development as well as hardware. Some of that money went for R&D and hardware to defend the continental United States against intercontinental ballistic missile attack, a separate problem from defending an airbase. Some of it went for ships and hardware for naval defense. I expect a good portion of it was spend on defending US bases around the world. Last I looked al Asad is an Iraqi air base.

Lastly, some reports suggested some of the Iranian missiles *were* shot down, but it is hard to filter out the chaff from actual factual news reports. Gawd, I hate journalists.

#5  re: #1 No RoE for reciprocating fire?

There was one, basically if any US service members was injured or killed, then US would respond. Turns out it was a good thing no one was hurt or killed because as it happened, Iran shot down an airliner with the purpose of blaming it on the USA.

#7  It was my understanding that RoE are to take out the place where the attack came from regardless of whether anyone was hurt or killed.

But it's the President's call to make. My take is Iran got lucky. Then they downed the airliner.

#8  The presence of a Ukrainian flagged civil aircraft attempting to climb out of Tehran would be a kinetic response show-stopper.

Russian AAA radar (or anyone else's) when flipped to the "ON" position, emits an electronic signature. If preparing for a response and one of more electronic AAA signatures appeared for no apparent reason, It might give one pause.

The two events taking place simultaneously would certainly produce an... "Oh SHI* Jake".... weapons hold moment.

#11  It has been reported that the smoldering butcher, er, Gen Solemeini's word was law, along with wish, suggestion and concept. And that apparently things have changed insofar as the new C.O of the IRGC ordered the airport in Teheran closed before their missile strike and his direct order was ignored.

Israeli home demolitions in East Jerusalem spiked
[YNet] - Israel demolished homes in Palestinian areas of East Jerusalem at a significantly higher rate in 2019 than the previous year, according to an advocacy group.

In a new report, Israel's Ir Amim organization said 104 housing units were demolished in 2019, compared to 72 units in 2018.

Israel says the houses being demolished were built illegally, and it says the demolitions are court sanctioned. But the Palestinians say they face a severe housing crisis fueled by Israel's reluctance to issue building permits.
