Gates Backs MGeneral Flynn's Critique Of Spy Agencies In Afghanistan
Posted by: Besoeker || 01/08/2010 11:47 || Comments || Link || [0 views] Top|| File under:

#1  The techniques used in Iraq re the knowledge of the tribes and local power structure is now being used in Afghanistan and this is just one sign of it. You need to know your enemy but you also need to know your friends and how to get more of them.

The intel folks are being moved in from Iraq and there is some learning required on the part of the "old timers" on the newer intel requirements.
Posted by: tipover || 01/08/2010 14:12 Comments || Top||

‘Afghan insurgency can sustain itself indefinitely': Top US intel officer
The Taliban not only has the “momentum' after the most successful year in its campaign against the United States and the Kabul government. “The Afghan insurgency can sustain itself indefinitely,' according to a briefing from Major General Michael Flynn, the top U.S. intelligence officer in the country. “The Taliban retains [the] required partnerships to sustain support, fuel legitimacy and bolster capacity.' And if that isn't enough, Flynn also warns that “time is running out' for the American-led International Security Assistance Force. “Regional instability is rapidly increasing and getting worse,' the report says.

Since General Stanley McChrystal took over as top commander in Afghanistan, there have been a series of dark appraisals about the state of the war. In August, McChrystal warned of an “urgent need for a significant change to our strategy and the way that we think and operate.' A report recently obtained by NBC News said Afghanistan's security forces won't be ready to fight the Taliban for years — if ever. Earlier this week, Flynn issued a white paper complaining that “eight years into the war in Afghanistan, the U.S. intelligence community is only marginally relevant to the overall strategy.'

But Flynn's December 23rd presentation on the “State of the Insurgency : Trends, Intentions and Objectives' may be the gloomiest public assessment of the war yet. The “loosely organized' Taliban is “growing more cohesive' and “increasingly effective.' The insurgents now have their own “governors' installed in 33 of Afghanistan's 34 provinces. And the “strength and ability of [that] shadow governance increasing,' according to the presentation. The Taliban's “organizational capabilities and operational reach are qualitatively and geographically expanding.'

Improvised bomb “events' have nearly tripled since 2007 — 7228 this year, compared to 2718 two years ago. The bombs have grown bigger — the majority are now 25 pounds or more. “80 to 90 percent' of them are made with homemade fertilizer, rather than military ordnance. That makes it much harder to track and block the distribution of the bomb-making material. Add to that steady supply of cash, thanks to the drug trade and the corrupt Kabul government, and a glut of weapons and ammunition,' and it becomes clear why, in Flynn's words, “the insurgency is confident… looking toward post-ISAF Afghanistan.'

The presentation also cast doubt on some of the war's stated central aims. The Obama administration has repeatedly said that additional troops are necessary to prevent a Taliban takeover of Afghanistan — which would then allow Al Qaeda the re-establigh its safe haven there. According to interviews with detainees, however, the insurgents “view Al Qaeda as a handicap – a view that is increasingly prevalent.' The Taliban feel they have to “manage [the] relationship with AQ to avoid alienating Afghan population, but encourage support from [the] global jihad network.'

Flynn's presentation also, indirectly, warns that one of the central U.S. tactics in Pakistan — drone strikes against suspected militants — could backfire. “violations of Pakistan sovereignty may contribute to radicalizing the population and diminishes credibility of the GoP [Government of Pakistan].' Such violations “demonstrat[e] an inability of the government; perception they cannot protect their own; exacerbates anti-western sentiment.'

Within military circles, there's a sense that Flynn may be underplaying recent American successes in Helmand province and elsewhere. And Flynn does note that there's still hope for the American effort in the region. “We have a key advantage – [the] Taliban is not a popular movement (yet),' the report says. What's more, there are “persistent fissures among insurgent leadership at local levels' and an “over-reliance on external support.' Exploiting those fissures — and beating the Taliban — will “requir[e] operating / thinking in a fundamentally new way.'

Afghan Governor Wounded in Blast
[Quqnoos] The acting governor of Khost province and several other officials were wounded by a blast inside the governor's office on Thursday
It was an inside job... one way or another.
The wounds to the officials were not life-threatening and an investigation was launched to find out what had caused the blast, said a spokesman for the Afghan Interior Ministry.

"The acting governor, his chief of staff, the head of education and five other people, including police were wounded in the blast," said head of Khost Public Health Department, Amir Paja Ramatzai.
May they heal well and quickly with minimal pain, and become known as the bane of the jihadis in Khost.
The blast came a week after a suicide bomber killed seven CIA officials and a Jordanian spy at a base in the province.

Al Qaeda's Afghan wing has claimed last week's attack at a US base in Afghanistan in which a double agent turned suicide bomber killed seven CIA officers, saying the attack was revenge for the deaths of their leaders.

There was no immediate report of a claim of responsibility for Today's blast, but Haqqani's Network and Taliban allies have carried out numerous attacks in the past in the province and the provincial capital.
May I request a Predator with Mr. Haqqani's name on it, even if he is the dog of the ISI?

Bomber kills 10 in eastern Afghanistan
[Iran Press TV Latest] A bomber targeting a pro-government militia commander has left at least ten people dead and dozens more wounded in Paktia province of eastern Afghanistan.

Afghan officials said the attack took place in Gardez outside a branch of the Kabul Bank on Thursday. The dead include a security company manager, his guards and four civilians.

Meanwhile, another blast near a girl's school in the eastern province of Laghman has killed one student and wounded three others.

Elsewhere, in Khost province, an explosion has rocked a government building. The blast hurt eight people, including the acting governor.

Bomb attacks have escalated in recent weeks with civilians bearing the brunt.

At least 140 killed in south Sudan violence: UN
[Al Arabiya Latest] At least 140 people were killed in a remote region of south Sudan, a U.N. official said on Thursday as aid agencies warned of a new civil war on the eve of the anniversary of a fragile peace deal between north and south.

Concern is mounting over stability in Sudan because Africa's largest nation, which is blessed by huge oil resources, faces a crucial political test this year -- its first general election in 24 years.

Ninety people were also wounded in the violence in Wunchuei region of the southern Warrap state over the past week, but the United Nations found out about the clashes only two days ago when a security team visited the area.

"Deep concern"
"This a matter for deep concern," said Lise Grande, the U.N. Deputy Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, adding that in addition to the casualties, 300,000 head of cattle were stolen.

U.N. peacekeepers were on their way to the area to investigate, she said.

The dead were from the Dinka people, and local sources suggested they were killed by a rival Nuer group but this claim could not be immediately confirmed.

The violence reinforced concerns expressed by 10 aid agencies which warned in a report that Sudan could plunge into fresh turmoil if the world community fails to salvage the North-South Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

The CPA -- which ended a devastating 22-year war between majority Muslim north Sudan and the mainly Christian and animist south -- enters its sixth year on Saturday.

It is meant to pave the way in April for Sudan's first multi-party elections in 24 years, with parliamentary and regional ballots held alongside a presidential vote, ahead of a referendum on southern independence in 2011.

2 (more) Men Arrested in NYC Terror Investigation
Two men were arrested Friday in the investigation of a bomb plot targeting New York City that previously led to charges against an airport driver.

The arrests in New York of Adis Medunjanin and Zarein Ahmedzay were part of "an ongoing investigation" by the Joint Terrorism Task Force, according to Special Agent Richard Kolko, who declined to comment further.

There were no immediate details on the charges against the men, according to Kolko and Robert Nardoza, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office in the city's Brooklyn borough.

Adis Medunjanin was arrested on charges related to a terror raid on a N.Y. mosque, was involved in a car accident in Queens.
He was being followed by FBI when the accident occurred and he was caught as he fled the scene!
Nardoza said the men were expected to appear in court later Friday.

Medunjanin's attorney said the FBI seized his client's passport on Thursday. Robert C. Gottlieb said the search warrant indicated the passport was sought as part of an investigation into a conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction.

The airport driver in Colorado, Najibullah Zazi, previously pleaded not guilty to that charge. He is accused of getting Al Qaeda training to build homemade bombs to attack New York City.

Federal investigators questioned Medunjanin, a Bosnian immigrant, and Ahmedzay, a U.S. citizen -- who lived in the same neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens where Zazi used to live -- months ago in the terrorism probe. Their photographs were among four shown to Ahmad Wais Afzali, a Queens imam accused of tipping off Zazi that New York police detectives were looking for him, according to Afzali's attorney

Gottlieb has said FBI agents seized computers and cell phones from Medunjanin's apartment last autumn but later returned them.

Gottlieb said the FBI confirmed the arrests for him Friday morning, many hours after they occurred. Gottlieb said he didn't know what charges the men faced.

The lawyer, who insists Medunjanin has done nothing wrong, said officials at a hospital had told him that authorities had taken Medunjanin into custody after he was treated for minor injuries from a traffic accident.

"They intentionally hid him from his lawyer and his family," Gottlieb said.

The name of Ahmedzay's attorney was not immediately on record.

2 Qaeda-linked suspects arrested; one crashes car on Whitestone Bridge
Two men who traveled to Pakistan with Najibullah Zazi were arrested early Friday morning in New York.

"Early this morning Adis Medunjanin and Zarein Ahmedzay were arrested by the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force in New York as the result of an ongoing investigation," FBI spokesman Rich Kolko said.

The full list of charges will be released later Friday but sources said one of the men was charged with non-terror-related holding charges and is awaiting terror-related charges.

The second man was charged with terror-related charges.

Zazi was arrested in September 2009 and accused of planning to carry out acts of terrorism against the United States under the direction of al Qaeda. The FBI said he had received instruction at an al Qaeda training camp in Pakistan.

Medunjanin's attorney said the FBI seized his client's passport on Thursday. Robert C. Gottlieb said the search warrant indicated the passport was sought as part of an investigation into a conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction.

After feds took the suspect's passport, the food-cart worker bolted and crashed his car on the Whitestone Expressway. Medunjanin is already on the no-fly list and has been watched by feds for months.

The investigators tailed him, but Medunjanin -- a 25 year-old Bosnian immigrant who reportedly accompanied alleged terror bomb plotter Najibullah Zazi on a trip to Pakistan in 2008 -- sped down the Whitestone Expressway.

While driving erratically, he called 911 and made threatening comments, according to a law enforcement official who was not authorized to discuss the case and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Near 20th Avenue, Medunjanin rear-ended another car and tried to run away, but FBI agents tackled him, sources said.

The airport driver, Najibullah Zazi, previously pleaded not guilty to that charge. He is accused of getting al-Qaida training to build homemade bombs to attack New York City.

Fla. police: Man threatening Jews taken off flight
An airline passenger who yelled "I want to kill all the Jews" on a Detroit-bound plane was arrested on disorderly conduct and other charges, but authorities said Thursday the incident didn't appear terrorism-related.

Mansor Mohammad Asad, 43, of Toledo, Ohio, was arrested Wednesday night after a taxiing Northwest Airlines flight returned to a gate at Miami International Airport, Miami-Dade police said. After a confrontation with officers, Asad was charged with threats against a public servant, disorderly conduct and resisting an officer without violence.

FBI spokeswoman Judy Orihuela said there were no indications the incident was connected to terrorism. The bureau was initially brought in to look into the disturbance but is no longer involved in the investigation and is treating the case as a local matter.

The disturbance came the same day as military jets escorted a commercial jetliner bound for Hawaii back to the Portland, Ore., airport because of a disruptive passenger. The FBI said there was no known terrorism link in that case. The passenger, identified only as a 56-year-old man from Salem, Ore., was released.

Asad's son, 27-year-old Mickey Asad, told The Associated Press that his father suffered from bipolar disorder and was in and out of mental institutions when he was younger.

"He's far from a terrorist," said the younger Asad. "He just lost his temper. There's no excuse, but someone had to have pushed his button"

Mansor Asad, who owns an appliance store in Toledo, was returning home from a vacation in Miami with his sister and his 14-year-old daughter.

His son said his father has a short temper and extensive criminal record. He also said his father had been doing better in recent years. "This is such a strange turn," he said.

Asad was being held pending a Friday bond hearing, with his arraignment date scheduled for Jan. 27. Court officials said Asad asked a judge for 24 hours to hire an attorney.

Witnesses told investigators who boarded the plane that Asad was loud, disruptive and claimed to be Palestinian. His son said he was an American citizen of Palestinian descent.

Officers didn't find any weapons or explosives on Asad, who police said was agitated and aggressive at times, according to an arrest affidavit. Authorities used a stun gun to subdue Asad on the jet bridge after he charged at an officer with fists clenched. He also chanted in a foreign language and threatened officers during a search.

"I'm not afraid of you cops, I've gotten in fights with cops in Ohio and broke their arms in three places," he said, according to the affidavit. "I've broken skulls too!"

The affidavit noted that alcohol didn't appear to be a factor during the incident.

The Transportation Security Administration said three of Asad's companions were also taken off the plane and questioned. The plane later departed without incident after a search using police dogs.

Delta Air Lines owns Northwest.

India-Pakistan
Explosion in Pakistan Home Kills at Least 6
n explosion at a house in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi killed at least six people Friday morning, police said.

City police chief Wasim Ahmad said the blast appeared to have been caused by explosives stored in the house, located in the Baldia area of the city, a mostly Pashtun neighborhood that is a suspected hide-out of Taliban militants.

Police were trying to determine exactly how the explosion occurred. Television footage showed police seizing guns, suicide vests and grenades from the site.

Karachi, Pakistan's largest city and commercial hub, has largely been spared the Taliban-linked violence that has struck much of the rest of the country, a fact that analysts believe is driven by the group's tendency to use it as a place to rest and raise money. But the city has been the scene of frequent ethnic, political and sectarian violence.

On Dec. 28, a bombing against a Shiite Muslim religious procession in the city killed 43 people and wounded dozens. Riots broke out after that attack, with people setting fire to the country's largest wholesale market. The blaze burned for more than two days and destroyed thousands of shops in the area.

Pakistan detains 5 Americans near Iran border
Pakistani security forces have arrested five US citizens in the province of Balochistan near the country's border with Iran. Pakistani police said on Thursday that the Americans were carrying out suspicious activities along the border. They were driving in a car with fake license plates, police added.
Oh wonderful. Great trade-craft, guys, great trade-craft ...
The five Americans were freed after the US consulate in Karachi intervened and demanded their release. The US consulate apparently told police that the Americans enjoyed diplomatic immunity.
Just simple embassy employees
A number of US citizens, most of them armed, have recently been arrested in several Pakistani cities.
Just simple, very fit, heavily armed embassy employees
But they were freed following interventions by the US embassy.

Indian troops storm hotel, end siege in central Srinagar
Commandos stormed a hotel in Indian-administered Kashmir on Thursday where two militants had been holed up for nearly 24 hours, killing the gunmen and bringing an end to the siege.

The four-storey hotel in Srinagar, the summer capital of the volatile Himalayan region, was on fire before police announced both extremists had been killed in a morning assault by security forces.

The gunmen -- one a Pakistani and the other an Indian Kashmiri, according to police -- had taken refuge in the hotel on Wednesday after throwing grenades and opening fire in Srinagar's main market area.

One police officer was killed in the attack and one bystander succumbed to his injuries Thursday.

"The operation as far as we are concerned is over," Kuldeep Khuda, the state police chief, told reporters at the scene.

A militant group, Jamiat-ul-Mujahedin, claimed it was behind the assault, which left five police and four civilians injured. Police pointed the finger at the Pakistan-based group Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT).

Overnight in Srinagar, police fired teargas to disperse scores of anti-India and pro-militant youths who threw stones at security forces, chanting "Kashmiri Mujahedeen, we are with you" and "We want freedom".

Khuda said the police had cleared the building from the top floor before encountering and killing the first militant early Thursday.

"The other terrorist tried to set the building on fire... and he tried to make his escape but he was shot down," he said.

Wednesday's assault came as Indian Kashmir's chief minister marked his first year in office by pledging to slash the security force presence in the region if violence continued to decline.

Iraq
Anti-terror chief among 7 killed in Iraq blasts
[Al Arabiya Latest] Three bombs exploded in a residential area near Ramadi in Iraq's western Anbar province on Thursday, killing seven people including an Iraqi Army anti-terrorist special forces commander and members of his family, police said.

"At 3:00 am, men planted bombs around the bedrooms of four houses belonging to members of the police force, including Major Walid al-Heeti, the head of Heet's anti-terror department," said Lt. Col. Fadhil Nimrawi, the head of the town's emergency response unit.

"The bombs killed seven people, including the anti-terror chief, and wounded six others, including women and children from the four families."

The dead included Heeti's wife and mother, a child, and three other police officers, Nimrawi said.

The four houses are in different neighborhoods across the centre of Heet, a town around 60 kilometers (40 miles) west of the Anbar provincial capital of Ramadi.

No vehicles are being allowed in or out of Heet, Nimrawi said, as part of ramped up security in the town.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Al-Quds Brigades: Iron Dome can't stop our rockets
Israel's recent announcement that Iron Dome rocket interception system successfully passed a number of comprehensive tests during the last two days does not appear to have fazed armed Palestinian groups in Gaza.
If they weren't "fazed", would they have reacted at all?
On Thursday, after seven mortars and a Qassam rocket were fired towards Israel's southern region, a spokesperson for the Al-Quds Brigades, said its capabilities were constantly improving. Al-Quds Brigades is the armed wing of Islamic Jihad.

Speaking to Ynet, Abu Ahmed said, "The Israelis have long since spoken of methods to intercept our rockets but haven't succeeded in doing so. We know the Israelis are aware of the fact that our projectiles are manufactured locally, while the Iron Dome system (can intercept) the 'classic' and conventional rockets -- it cannot provide a solution to our rockets."

Abu Ahmed said that even if the Israeli system does prove to be effective against the Palestinian rockets, "We have proven that we are constantly improving and developing the means at our disposal, and I am certain we will be able to circumvent any Israeli attempt to damage our systems."

The Al-Quds spokesman accused the IDF of trying to escalate the situation along the Gaza-Israel border "despite the (armed Palestinian) groups' decision to (halt fire) in order to allow its men ample time to rest and regroup."

"(Israel) wants to drag us into a conflict that will include mass targeted killings in hopes that we will respond with rocket fire that won't cause any damage," he said. "The rockets may not cause a lot of damage, but they create a lot of fear in the Gaza vicinity."

#1  "The rockets may not cause a lot of damage, but they create a lot of fear in the Gaza vicinity."

For those who think these rockets are just an annoyance and not to be considered in any serious negotiations, please pay attention to the foregoing statement. This describes the intent of and the actual result of these missiles, and the intent and its causes must be addressed and annihilated for things to go forward.

#2  Cut any aid and make them give back every penny since 1949. Since they hve so much money they can burn it in missiles, so much time they can train for terrorism instead of working I want my money back.

And force them to pay a 10 million dollars (Regan dolllars) for the psychological damages for the missiles.

There will be peace not the day when Palestinians love their children (who are not at danger since Israel doesn't target them) more than they hate the Jews but the day they have to work hard to put bread on the table.

#5  Israel needs to totally flatten about 4 acres in the middle of Gaza City and Kahn Yunis. I think that will get the attention of these idiots like nothing used in the past has ever done. Using napalm and high explosives may be a "war crime" but constantly terrorizing civilians is enough of a crime to cover any Israeli response. If Belgium opens its pie hole, it needs to be filled with a Tomahawk missile. It's time to quit playing kindergarten games and get on with winning the continued war Israel is fighting against Islam for its very existence.

Israeli airstrikes on Gaza hit weapons shop, 3 tunnels
Gaza City (CNN) -- Israel launched four airstrikes in Gaza on Thursday, targeting a weapons shop and two smuggling tunnels, the Israeli Defense Forces said. A third tunnel, described as a "terror tunnel" with access to Israel, also was hit, an IDF spokeswoman said.

At least one Palestinian was killed and four others were injured from the airstrikes on two tunnels in the southern town of Rafah, according to Hamas security sources. No casualties were reported from airstrikes in Gaza City and Khan Younis, the sources said.

The sources said a secret metal shop used to make Qassam rockets was hit in Gaza City. IDF confirmed the strike. The IDF spokeswoman said the airstrikes were in response to a series of rockets and mortar shells fired into Israel earlier Thursday. She said four mortars struck the Kerem Shalom humanitarian-aid crossing on the tip of southern Gaza, forcing authorities to close it and prevent 70 trucks carrying fuel and other aid from entering Gaza.

Israel seals Gaza crossings after shelling
[Ma'an] One truck of carnations and two trucks of strawberries were set to leave the Gaza Strip Thursday, with an expected 86-96 truckloads of humanitarian aid to enter the area, Palestinian crossings authority official Raed Fattouh said.

When a projectile reportedly fired by Gaza militants hit near the Kerem Shalom crossing, however, the transfer point was shut-down and sealed. The Israeli office of the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) could not immediately be reached to confirm whether the crossing would be re-opened later in the day.

The import/export activity was set to go through Gaza's only open crossing, Kerem Shalom, as Israeli officials announced the permanent closure of the Nahal Oz crossing - previously used for the transport of fuel - and decided to keep the bulk goods crossing closed at Karni. The one crossing generally operates five or fewer times a week.

Before Israel's siege on Gaza began, three commercial crossings and one pedestrian crossing operated at least six days a week for the entry and exit of goods and individuals.

On Wednesday, 66 tucks of aid was sent into Gaza via through Kerem Shalom and 554,595 liters of fuel as well as 105,730 liters of cooking gas were permitted to be pumped into the Strip. The Karni crossing was also open on Wednesday, where two trucks of strawberries were permitted to be exported, and 70 trucks of bulk goods were transferred into the area.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Shots fired at leading Iranian opposition figure
TEHRAN, Iran -- Pro-government demonstrators opened fire on the car of one of Iran's opposition leaders and shattered his windows, but he escaped unharmed from the rare armed attack on a top reformist, his Web site reported on Friday.

Hard-liners called last week for the execution of opposition leaders, raising tensions that could spark a cycle of political violence beyond even the government's control.

Mahdi Karroubi blamed authorities after shots were fired at his car late Thursday from a crowd of about 500 government supporters surrounded by police in the town of Qazvin, some 90 miles (140 kilometers) west of Tehran. At the time of the shooting, Karroubi was leaving a house he was staying in while visiting a friend in the town, and government supporters were rallying outside the building. Karroubi's bodyguards, who were with him at the time of the incident, did not return fire. They were also unharmed.

"God knows why a hand, which should defend people and the country, opens fire on the people," Karroubi said. The shots shattered the carwindows, reported Sahamnews Web site.

Karroubi ran in June's disputed presidential election that the opposition says Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won by fraud. Unrest began immediately following the government announcement declaring Ahmadinejad the victor, with mass street protests followed by a ferocious government crackdown. The opposition says more than 80 protesters have been killed in the crackdown, but the government puts the number of confirmed dead at less than 40.

In late December, protests gained momentum again and clashes between security forces and opposition supporters killed at least eight people - the worst violence since the height of the unrest in the summer.

The shooting against Karroubi, however, was unusual. Karroubi's car was pelted by a brick-wielding mob in December. In 1999, another pro-reform politician, Saeed Hajjarian, was shot in the face and paralyzed.

The attack raised concerns that the political turmoil rocking Iran could be spiraling out of the government's control. An editor of a reformist Web site in Tehran said he feared for Karroubi's life. "It was not just a single threat," the editor said, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue. "It's a move for the physical elimination of Karroubi and other opposition leaders."

None of Iran's official or semiofficial news outlets reported on the shooting on Karroubi.

Since the bloodshed last month, death threats against opposition leaders have increased, with pro-government demonstrations last week calling for the execution of Karroubi and the top opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi.

Senior cleric Kazem Sedighi appeared to give the green light Friday for people to take matters into their own hands against opposition figures. "I am concerned that people will lose patience if the legal apparatus does not conduct its affairs in a timely manner," Sedighi said during Friday's sermon in Tehran. He also claimed some of the 500 protesters arrested around the Shiite holy day of Ashoura Dec. 27 were intoxicated.

Also during Friday prayers, hard-line lawmaker Gholam Ali Haddad Adel appeared to lash out Karroubi, accusing him of serving the enemies of Iran. Authorities have repeatedly accused the United States and Britain of fomenting Iran's unrest and supporting the opposition. "Why did you pave the ground for the plots of foreign enemies?" said Adel, an ally of Iran's supreme leader. "You damaged the reputation of the system," he added, without mentioning Karroubi by name, and warned those going against the establishment "will melt like snow under rays of the sun."

Tehran's prosecutor said Friday a German national and a Syrian reporter for Dubai TV who were among those detained during the latest opposition protests in December would soon be released, but gave no timeframe.

The prosecutor, Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi, said five other detained protesters will go on trial next week. He described them as members of the armed opposition group MEK, or Mujahedeen Khalq, and said they will be tried on charges of defying the clerical establishment and could face the death sentence under Iranian law.

The group fought Iran's Western-backed monarchy in the 1960s and the current Islamic establishment in the 1980s. It moved its base to Iraq soon after 1979 Islamic revolution and is said to have provided Americans with intelligence on Iran. The U.S. lists MEK as a terrorist organization, but the European Union removed it from its terror list last year.

The prosecutor also said several followers of the Bahai faith were detained in December protests. He said they helped "in organizing the riots and sending pictures of the protest abroad." Bahaism is considered illegal after the 1979 Islamic revolution.

Report: Syrian-made explosives found planted in south Lebanon
[Ma'an] Approximately ten explosive devices were found on Lebanon's southern border last week, Israeli media reported Thursday.

Reports suggested that the bombs were designed to target Israeli forces entering Lebanon, and said sources in Israel "believed the devices were placed at the site by Hizbullah."

Israel's daily newspaper Haaretz, said the devices were planted several kilometers north of the Israeli town of Metula, near the Lebanese town of Al-Khiam. It also quoted source saying the devices were either Syrian or Iranian made.

The explosives were found by the UN team responsible for peace keeping in southern Lebanon, UNIFIL.

The discovery of the weapons follows intermittent attacks by Lebanese militias in the south, which Israeli forces have retaliated against with equal or greater force.
