Hillsborough man, while thwarting home robbery, shoots two teens
[TAMPABAY] Two teenagers attempting a home robbery in Hillsborough County were shot by a resident equipped with a legal firearm Saturday evening.

One of the teenagers died. The other is at death's door, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

At around 7:30 p.m., deputies responded to a call at the Seasons at Westchase apartment complex in the 12000 block of Citrus Falls Circle.

A man and his fiancé told deputies that two young men broke through the screen on their back patio and entered the home through an unlocked door, a news release said.

One of the intruders, who held a gun, "made demands" to the man and his fiancé, the release said. The male resident grabbed his own gun and shot at the alleged intruders. He hit both, and killed one, said Sheriff’s Office Major Frank Losat. The man and his fiancé were not hurt.

When authorities responded to the scene, they found two other teenagers in a car nearby. They stopped the car, and concluded that the two young men were also likely involved in the attempted robbery, the release said.

All four suspects, ages 16 and 17, are students at Gaither High School, the sheriff’s office said.

As of Sunday evening, the sheriff’s office had not named any of the teens, and had not announced any charges.

#4  When I heard the name Hillsborough, I thought that this had happened in the UK, and wondered what horrific punishment they were going to give the man who defended himself while "illegally" keeping a firearm at home.

Glad to see that this is a much happier story. They probably won't charge the little thug until its clear that he will survive (if he does). No point in doing paperwork for charging a dead guy.

Actor George Lopez Accepts Iran's Bounty to Assassinate President Trump
Pay attention to MEEEEE!!
[Breitbart] Actor George Lopez appeared to accept an Iranian bounty to assassinate President Donald Trump on Sunday evening. Iranian authorities had recently put an $80 million dollar bounty on the president’s head, but according to Lopez, he’ll do it for $40 million instead.

"[Iranian] authorities have put a bounty on American President Donald Trump’s head during the televised funeral of General [Qasem Soleimani] after he was assassinated last week," said Chicano Worldstar to Instagram. "What are your thoughts?"

"We’ll do it for half," replied Lopez from his official Instagram account.

Lopez had a tv sitcom (George Lopez show) for some time and I think appeared in a few Spy Kids movies. I think Hollywood is done with him and he's hoping to virtue-signal his way back in.

Donald Trump Jr. Under Fire For Decorating AR-15 With Hillary Clinton Cartoon
[HuffPoo] Donald Trump Jr. is coming under fire for an Instagram photo that shows an assault-style rifle decorated with a caricature of Hillary Clinton behind bars.

The president’s son posted pics of the elaborately decorated AR-15 on Saturday with the caption, "Nice day at the range."

The weapon, made by Texas-based Rare Breed Firearms, is called the Crusader. It also features an image of a Christian solder’s helmet and the Jerusalem cross, a symbol associated with the medieval wars between Christian and Muslim soldiers.

Although many of Trump Jr.’s followers liked the jailed Clinton decoration, many people on Twitter fired off very cutting remarks.

#9  So who is going to replace his father down the road? Might have a path.

As much as I like the thought of it, I'm not a fan of political dynasties as they reek badly of an unofficial aristocracy (or some such). I grew up watching the absolute tongue bathing of the Kennedy family by the Boston Globe over four revolting decades. A high school teacher tossed me out of his classroom because I mentioned a single word associated with a Kennedy - Chappaquiddick.

Then again, if it pisses off the lefties bad enough, I should reconsider.

Puerto Rico hit by 5.8-magnitude earthquake
[NYPOST] A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck Puerto Rico early Monday, causing power outages and damage to homes, according to the US Geological Survey.
Clearly, this is Trump's fault. "Send us money"
Its epicenter was recorded around 6:32 a.m. at a shallow depth of 6 miles off the coast of the Caribbean island, 8 miles south of Indios, the agency said.

There were power outages reported in some parts of Puerto Rico following the quake, and residents in coastal towns posted photos of partially collapsed homes, as well as large boulders obstructing roads.

Angel Vasquez, emergency management director for the southern coastal city of Ponce, said it was one of the latest in a series of quakes over the last week to hit the region.

The quakes have ranged in magnitude from 4.7 to 5.1, with some cracking homes and leading products to fall off supermarket shelves.

"This is one of the strongest quakes to date since it started shaking on Dec. 28," Vasquez said. "It lasted a long time."

#8  Shoulda explained something else - not knowing the specific settlement details, the general reason Nick's settlement isn't taxable is this defamation settlement is / should be considered 'damages to personal reputation'. If someone sues for harm caused to one's career / livelihood, that's considered 'damage to professional reputation' and thus taxable, the concept being the award in this situation is considered in lieu of lost income because of said defamation.

#10  Lin Wood the lawyer will prob'y not settle for less than $10 million... his cut is likely one-third, and he probably expected to take at least $10m given all the time invested / opportunity cost.

Also, several more suits are in play incl $25 vs WaPo, so Lin Wood will prob'y want to make sure the first settlement is a very high one.

I'd guess more like $25-40m.

Tripoli-based HoR calls for cutting ties with UAE
[Libya Observer] Spokesman for the Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...

Commenting on the bombing of the Military College, Sayala pointed out that the HoR remains in permanent session in the capital, Tripoli.

It is noteworthy that a UAE-backed dronezap targeted on Saturday night the Military College in the Hadhaba area of Tripoli, causing deaths and injuries to more than 60 people.

Carmaker Rolls-Royce annual sales surge 25%
(Reuters) - Luxury carmaker Rolls-Royce said on Tuesday it recorded a 25% jump in sales in 2019, underpinned by solid demand for its first-ever SUV, Cullinan, just a year after the launch.

The 116-year-old British company said it sold a record 5,152 cars in 2019, compared with 4,107 units in the prior year.

"Worldwide demand last year for our Cullinan SUV has driven this success and is expected to stabilize in 2020," Chief Executive Officer Torsten Mueller-Oetvoes said in a statement.

The Cullinan was unveiled in 2018.

Two men charged with lighting separate bushfires in South Australia
[ABC.NET.AU] Two South Australian men charged with deliberately lighting bushfires have faced court.

A 31-year-old Reynella man charged with deliberately starting two bushfires at Aldinga Beach last month did not apply for bail in the Christies Beach Magistrates Court this afternoon.

He is also charged with two acts to endanger life and failing to truly answer questions.

His identity was suppressed by the court.

The two grass fires started in scrubland on a severe bushfire risk day at Aldinga Beach Road and the Esplanade on December 28.

Police said the man's vehicle was seized for forensic examination and investigations were continuing.

The man is expected to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court again in October.

Borden Dairy, the 163-year-old milk producer known for its spokes-cow Elsie, files for bankruptcy after demand drops as people switch to VEGANISM and more say they are lactose intolerant
[MAIL] A 163-year-old dairy which has its own 'spokescow' has filed for bankruptcy amid a surge in costs and a fall in sales because of the rise of veganism and people allergic to milk.

Borden Dairy Co blamed the 'rising cost of raw milk and market challenges facing the dairy industry'.

The amount of liquid milk consumed per capita in the US has tumbled more than 40 percent since 1975.

Americans drank around 24 gallons a year in 1996, according to government data but that dropped to 17 gallons in 2018.

About 65 percent of people cannot drink cow's milk without getting an upset stomach due to lactose intolerance and many more have dietary restrictions that keep them from the drink.

The Global Market Insights reported the plant milk market was worth over $8billion in 2016 and predicted it would be worth $21billion by 2024.

#1  Another bankruptcy?

Borden suffered significant losses for the period 1991-1993. A 1991 restructuring failed to integrate the company's brands and marketing efforts. When whole milk prices dropped in 1992, Borden Food did not lower its prices—causing a significant drop in market share from which it was not able to recover. Borden divested itself of nearly a third of its businesses in 1993 but could not find a buyer for its snack food concerns. In deep financial difficulty, Borden was bought out by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR) in 1995.[1] - wiki

#2  I worked for the local Borden's plant for a time -- an older plant that failed to keep up with changing health regulations and eventually had to close. Bordens was one of those companies that got the "Diversification Bug" back in the 70's-80's and invested heavily into its Chemicals/Plastics subsidiary draining their dairy foods core of money. So like US Steel (USX) the core was left to wither away -- Veganism has bupkis to do with their decline.

Ironic in that Borden pretty much invented the concept of health and sanitation in the dairy business.

Pier 1 Imports closing nearly half of stores as sales falter
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) ‐ Pier 1 Imports is closing nearly half its 942 stores as it struggles to draw consumers and compete online.

The home decor company said Monday it is closing up to 450 stores and will also shutter distribution centers. It didn’t say where the store closures would occur, but it operates stores in the U.S. and Canada. Pier 1 also plans layoffs at its corporate headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas.

The company didn’t say how many workers will be impacted.

The moves had some investors wondering if a bankruptcy filing was imminent. Also Monday, Pier 1 added two members to its board with expertise in corporate restructuring.

Pier 1′s shares fell 17% to close at $5.18 Monday. They fell another 6% in extended trading following the announcement of the store closures.

Pier 1 named a new CEO with a background in corporate turnarounds in November. Robert Riesbeck previously served as the company’s chief financial officer.

Dupe entry: Finnish Government Collapses Due to Rising Cost of Universal Health Care

The government of Finland collapsed Friday due to the rising cost of universal health care and the prime minister's failure to enact reforms to the system.

Prime Minister Juha Sipila and the rest of the cabinet resigned after the governing coalition failed to pass reforms in parliament to the country's regional government and health services, the Wall Street Journal reports. Finland faces an aging population, with around 26 percent of its citizens expected to be over 65 by the year 2030, an increase of 5 percent from today.

Sucks when you run out of other people's money.

Sipila's reforms "intended to remove power from the 295 municipalities that currently oversee health and social care, and place responsibility within a leaner, more efficient system of 18 elected regional authorities," according to the Journal. The prime minister also wanted patients to be able to choose from a range of public and private providers.

Sipila said "there's no other way for Finland to succeed" besides these reforms, which could have led to $3.4 billion in savings for the government.

Finland's aging population is increasing the financial strain on its health care system. From a BBC News report:

As an increasing number of people live longer in retirement, the cost of providing pension and healthcare benefits can rise. Those increased costs are paid for by taxes collected from of the working-age population ‐ who make up a smaller percentage of the population than in decades past.

In 2018, those aged 65 or over made up 21.4% of Finland's population, the fourth highest after Germany, Portugal, Greece, and Italy, according to Eurostat.

Finland's welfare system is also generous in its provisions, making it relatively expensive. Attempts at reform have plagued Finnish governments for years.

Reuters reports that soaring treatment costs and longer life spans have particularly affected Nordic countries.

"Nordic countries, where comprehensive welfare is the cornerstone of the social model, have been among the most affected," according to Reuters. "But reform has been controversial and, in Finland, plans to cut costs and boost efficiency have stalled for years."

Similar problems are bedeviling Sweden and Denmark, two other countries frequently held up as models to follow on health care. Finland's crisis in particular comes as calls for universal health care have grown louder among Democrats in the United States.

Sen. Bernie Sanders's (I., Vt.) "Medicare for all" proposal would cost the U.S. over $32 trillion over ten years, according to an analysis by the Mercatus Center. It would also require enormous tax increases as "a doubling of all currently projected federal individual and corporate income tax collections would be insufficient to finance the added federal costs of the plan."

Another Democratic presidential candidate, Sen. Kamala Harris (D., Calif.), has called for eliminating private health insurance, although a spokesperson suggested she is open to multiple paths to "Medicare for all."

Self-described democratic socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) has also called for "Medicare for all."

The Kaiser Family Foundation found that 58 percent of Americans oppose "Medicare for all" if told it would eliminate private health insurance plans, and 60 percent oppose it if it requires higher taxes.

If you want to destroy a country that isn't replacing its population, just put in Government Healthcare. More and more I think that is the demoncrat's plan.

Netanyahu, in apparent reminder stumble, calls Israel 'nuclear power'
JERUSALEM (Reuters) - In an apparent slip of the tongue on Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described Israel as a nuclear power before correcting himself with a bashful nod and an embarrassed smile.
"My bad. I meant nukular"
Israel is widely believed to have an atomic arsenal but has never confirmed or denied that it has nuclear weapons, maintaining a so-called policy of ambiguity on the issue for decades.

Netanyahu stumbled at the weekly cabinet meeting while reading in Hebrew prepared remarks on a deal with Greece and Cyprus on a subsea gas pipeline.

"The significance of this project is that we are turning Israel into a nuclear power," he said, before quickly correcting himself to say "energy power".

He then paused for a beat, acknowledging his mistake with a smile, and then ploughed on with his comments.

Death of Iran general spurs anxiety over fate of US hostages
WASHINGTON (AP) ‐ The killing of a top Iranian general has ratcheted up the anxiety of families of Americans held in Iran, one month after the release of a New Jersey student had given them hope.

The Trump administration has made a priority of bringing home hostages held abroad, but the prospect of a resolution for the handful of captives in Iran seems to have dimmed with the two nations edging dangerously close to conflict and warning of retaliatory strikes and continued agitation.

"He wasn’t safe before now, but now he’s really not safe," said Joanne White, whose son, Navy veteran Michael White of Imperial Beach, California, has been imprisoned since July while visiting a girlfriend in Iran. "I don’t know if anyone is going to retaliate."

Iran has vowed revenge for the airstrike that killed Revolutionary Guard Gen. Qassem Soleimani ‐ the U.S. accused him of plotting new attacks just before his death ‐ and has abandoned the remaining limits of its 2015 nuclear deal with world powers. The Trump administration, while saying it remains committed to freeing Americans from Iran, has said it’s prepared to respond to any attacks from the Islamic Republic.
