20100310 21:13 PappyThe two main objectives in the current war are to not admit there is a war and to put on good show of fighting it without upsetting anyone.

Something I said back in December:

prior to Reagan, the Cold War, IMNSHO, had become an endless war. What was not to like about it? It funded academia. It provided numerous civilian employment opportunities both in and out of government. It had become a game where everyone in the political spectrum could play, where there were “acceptable levels of violence”, negotiations that were objectives in themselves, and where diplomatic positioning was paramount. There was no ‘win’, only the objectives of maintaining a status quo, a “detente” and avoiding open war. There was some unpleasantness in the darkness of a back alley, some backwater nation, or in the depths of the ocean, but it was out of sight and didn’t upset more meaningful things like the Great Society or the European welfare states.

There were American casualties. But not in the large numbers of WWII. But factor in Vietnamese, Cambodians, Koreans, Czechs, Hungarians, Israelis, Egyptians, Brits, Germans, Italians, Lebanese, Congolese, Rhodesians, Angolans, Afghanis, Ethiopians, Cubans, Nicaraguans, Colombians, Argentinians, Peruvians, Filipinos, Malaysians, Japanese, and American civilians over the course of four decades… I could’ve summed it all up by saying the Cold War was better than the alternative which the world had experienced before that, but it eventually became an all-too-acceptable situation.

I think a new Cold War is what’s being tried again. I can’t help but look at Washington’s antics and think “historical reenactment”. Look who the administration’s foreign policy advisers are. The mindset certainly never really went away.

Made up my own variant - using venison - the other day without realizing it until later. mmmmm
20100310 16:45 Thing From Snowy MountainMore from the same thread:

Well, that turns out not to be the case.

We do have the mechanism of a presidential finding that can license the CIA to do what must be done, for the good of the state. We certainly have Predators that can fire at a dirty napkin, within a certain protocol. It’s very Bugs Bunny really, you dress up, put on your spectacles and white gloves, carefully examine and measure, think deep thoughts, then pull out a sledgehammer and whack whatever needs whacking.

Terrorists must be given their rights, only when Obama (or somebody like him) wants to stick it to his domestic political foes. The moment we take the terrorists seriously, we carpet bomb his home town, whether he’s there or not. If we want to be realistic about things, let’s *be* realistic.
20100310 16:43 Thing From Snowy MountainSeen in the comments section of Belmont Club:

The Cold War was based on two Western main objectives. One was to prevent the outbreak of a worldwide nuclear war. The other was to oppose the USSR wherever and whenever, as described by the Admiral in the film “The Bridges of Toko Ri.” So we did move and countermove with the communists, from the deepest depths of the ocean to the seas of the Moon.

The problem with this approach is that the communists were always willing to go further. A Smith and Wesson beats a royal flush. But a Stalin tank beats a truckload of Smith and Wessons. Despite winning most of the covert war we were losing the one that counted. That is, until Ronald Reagan, who decided to just get the damn thing over with. An M1A1 Abrams with some A-10’s overhead beats a boatload of Stalin tanks, or T-55’s or T-62’s or T-72’s. Game, set, match and we got ya’ covered Ivan.

The two main objectives in the current war are to not admit there is a war and to put on good show of fighting it without upsetting anyone. The trial of KSM in NYC is designed to say to the Right “We are too opposing these guys!” and to the Left “There, there, ACLU, you ARE important and we DO care about your feelings!”

The old saying was that after WWIII was fought with nukes that WWIV would be fought with clubs and brickbats. Instead, WWIV is being fought with lawyers and that will mean that WWV will be fought with nukes.

20100310 16:16 swksvolFFAfternoon all, enjoying some rain out here.

Found an olde style recipe for boeuf bourguignon and used it the other day. Can't share it, its against the law, cuz it calls for stuff like carrots sautee softned in salt pork/bacon grease. mighty good stuff. Looked like a heckuva lot of good cooking went on last weekend, jealous jealous.

Kansas is now getting into sugar tax idea, about to write a little letter to my state rep and sen. After hearing an IVAW advertisement during the KU/MIZZ game, perhaps the state could save some money by cutting its funds to there, at least until the public funded university can refrain from advertising political entities. Where is the funding for IVAW coming from? Not just anyone can get the coveted advertising spots for KU basketball, nevermind the big rivalry game - maybe a question for the folks at TAH?

I know there are practical and technical issues with the thing, but I think the Osprey is a beautiful piece of machinary.

20100309 23:15 PappyWe had a visitor at work today.

Photobucket
20100309 23:05 PappyEvening.

One from Mark Krikorian:

Fully one-quarter of the space on this year's form is taken up with questions of race and ethnicity, which are clearly illegitimate and none of the government's business (despite the New York Times' assurances to the contrary on today's editorial page). So until we succeed in building the needed wall of separation between race and state, I have a proposal.

Question 9 on the census form asks "What is Person 1's race?" (and so on, for other members of the household). My initial impulse was simply to misidentify my race so as to throw a monkey wrench into the statistics; I had fun doing this on the personal-information form my college required every semester, where I was a Puerto Rican Muslim one semester, and a Samoan Buddhist the next. But lying in this constitutionally mandated process is wrong. Really — don't do it.

Instead, we should answer Question 9 by checking the last option — "Some other race" — and writing in "American." It's a truthful answer but at the same time is a way for ordinary citizens to express their rejection of unconstitutional racial classification schemes. In fact, "American" was the plurality ancestry selection for respondents to the 2000 census in four states and several hundred counties.
20100309 22:58 GlenmoreSnow thing, when you go to the gas station and are happy at the prices, my upstream spot will be getting shaky. And when you hurt the most, my job is most secure. Downstream is hurting a lot because more and more refining is being done in and by producing countries instead of in and by consuming countries. More profit for them, less jobs for us. (Plus, nobody here wants those nasty refineries around their back yards, which makes modernizing or expanding them a challenge; the sheiks of the burning sands don't care what their people think.)

20100309 12:48 GlenmoreChevron Downstream Executive Vice President Mike Wirth today announced potential changes to our portfolio and reductions to the workforce – two actions he said are necessary for a profitable and competitive Downstream organization.

“These actions are part of our commitment to restructure downstream to drive sustained operational excellence, further cost reductions, better accountability, and quicker results,”
...plans to exit 12 states in the eastern United States and to sell 13 U.S. terminals. Continuing that effort, the company will solicit bids for our fuels marketing, aviation and lubricants businesses in the Caribbean, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Belize, as well as our refinery interest in Martinique.
... will solicit bids in Europe for our Pembroke Refinery and our fuels marketing, aviation and lubricants businesses.
Reviews also are under way for our operations in Hawaii and select operations in Africa.
as we’ve exited markets, sold company-owned service stations and terminals, we now need less support and overhead. Benchmarking shows we should have broader spans of management. It’s time to move to a simpler and a leaner organization.”

Not including the aforementioned portfolio changes, Wirth said the company expects to reduce the downstream workforce by about 2,000 employees by the end of the year, and by another several hundred during 2011. And while nearly every business unit will be affected, he said the greatest impacts will be felt in the United States, Africa, and Asia Pacific.

Physorg: Carbon emissions 'outsourced' to developing countries:

A new study by scientists at the Carnegie Institution finds that over a third of carbon dioxide emissions associated with consumption of goods and services in many developed countries are actually emitted outside their borders. Some countries, such as Switzerland, "outsource" over half of their carbon dioxide emissions, primarily to developing countries. The study finds that, per person, about 2.5 tons of carbon dioxide are consumed in the U.S. but produced somewhere else. For Europeans, the figure can exceed four tons per person. Most of these emissions are outsourced to developing countries, especially China.

Erk, it was great meeting you and I enjoyed every one of those beers you brought along. Hope I didn't leave any of the assortment untried. Nice to hear you liked the whale meat. To me it tasted like livers. 'Nuff said.

49 Pan, it was great meeting you, too, and I'm glad to hear you got back to Miss. in one piece. Man, you must have been haulin' ass to get there so quick.

AP, what can I say-- we've talked so much and so often on the honk line that meeting you in person I had to remind myself "I've never met this guy before." Hope you and your family enjoy the rest of the week rammin' around Tennessee and seeing the sights and taking in some history-- there's a lot of it there.

Deacon, we ought to get together again when the weather warms up a bit so we don't end up frozen on one side and burnt on the other while sitting around the bonfire. Lemme know what you think.

BTW, tell your son-in-law I see what he means about that water tower. It's one helluva water tower, for sure. Almost stopped to take a picture of it for him, but I was flying at treetop level with both afterburners on max at the time and couldn't slow down for the exit...

20100306 13:42 FredDouble post is my fault. Normally you do your update and then the page reloads from scratch. I was debugging and turned that part off. I'm about to fix it...
20100306 13:41 FredThe updated field is the cookie of the last person who touched the record. If there's no "updated" entry then whoever created the record bypassed the data entry page -- meaning they've got a copy of their own.
20100306 13:30 Old PatriotWhat's with the double-post? I just refreshed the page to see if there had been anything added.

20100306 07:15 Deacon BluesMorning, All. It's a beautiful morning, although a bit cold right now. I found this interesting tidbit at Strategy Page.
"Another sign that Israel expects to be attacked; air force ground crews are being trained to perform dangerous “hot refueling.”
20100306 06:51 AutoBartenderSnowie, according to Google Maps that place in FL is almost a 900 mile drive from Deacon's. I dunno whether AP would be up for it...
20100306 01:57 Thing From Snowy MountainWish I could go too.

Y'all who are going might consider a side trip;.. I hear the town of Plantation in Florida is being overrun by a bunch of wild hogs. It sounds like the perfect application of the talents of the assembled, as long as you don't start with "Hold my Yuengling, and watch this!"
20100306 00:58 PappyNite - gotta run to San Diego in the morning on an unplanned but urgent trip. Catch you tomorrow eve.
