At least 22 Nigerian soldiers killed as insurgents counter military assault
[SOWETANLIVE.CO.ZA] Insurgents deployed improvised bombs and jacket wallahs to ward off attacks by the military, killing at least 22 soldiers and wounding several others in Nigeria's northeast. File photo.

At least 22 soldiers have been killed and several maimed in Nigeria's northeast after Death Eaters deployed improvised bombs and suicide bombers to ward off attacks by the military, army spokesperson Edward Buba said.

The Nigerian military said late on Sunday that it had launched an assault 10 days ago against Death Eaters in the northeast and killed over 70 holy warriors including three commanders.

Buba said government forces also shot down drones used by the holy warriors.

Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
and Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
West Africa Province (ISWAP) holy warriors have mainly operated in Borno state, targeting security forces and civilians in an insurgency that has killed and displaced tens of thousands of people.

On Friday suspected Islamist Death Eaters killed at least 20 Nigerian soldiers, including a commanding officer, in an attack on an army base in a remote Borno town, according to security sources and local residents.

An Islamist insurgency has plagued the northeast of Africa's most populous country for 16 years, while kidnapping and banditry are rampant in the northwest and gang and separatist violence is common in the southeast.
