Hunt for SSGN Kazan. The United States was afraid of Russian military exercises in the Caribbean

[REGNUM] The real detective story unfolded in the Caribbean Sea, where the United States threw significant army and naval resources into the search for the Russian nuclear submarine Kazan, which arrived in the region to participate in exercises. Warships and aircraft constantly patrol the US maritime borders and certain areas of the Caribbean Sea, trying to detect traces of a Russian submarine. The day before, a group of warships and vessels of the Russian Navy entered the region: the frigate “Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov”, the nuclear submarine “Kazan”, the tanker “Akademik Pashin” and the tugboat “Nikolai Chiker”. On Russia Day, June 12, the ships arrived on an “unofficial visit” to the port of Havana in Cuba.

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that a few hours before entering the Cuban port, the tactical naval strike group “completed exercises on the use of high-precision missile weapons using computer simulation against naval targets.”

Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy Alexander Moiseev previously stated that the visit to Cuba is only one of the tasks of the ships’ long-distance voyage, and it is being carried out within the framework of the international cooperation program with the states of the Caribbean. The military department also stated that during the visit to Cuba, the crews of ships and support vessels will participate in protocol events.

In turn, the ministries of foreign affairs of Russia and Cuba emphasized that the Kazan submarine does not carry nuclear weapons, and the actions of the Russian Navy group do not pose a threat to the region. But in the United States they reacted very painfully to the exercises.

LOOKING FOR SHIPS AND HELICOPTERS
Washington does not view the visit of the Russian squadron as a threat: Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said that visits by Russian ships to the Caribbean occur regularly, so ordinary Americans have no reason to worry.

At the same time, the Pentagon emphasized that the US Army has been monitoring the visit of Russian ships to Cuba since the beginning of June, and US Navy and Coast Guard ships “will continue monitoring.”

The American television channel ABC News reported that three American Navy destroyers, a coast guard boat, and French Navy ships were involved in spying on the Russian submarine.

But this is not a complete list of forces involved in the search for one Russian submarine. Users of air traffic monitoring services noted the unusual activity of the US Navy off the coast of Florida.

It is reported that the US Navy has launched a “submarine hunter” into the sky - a P-8 Poseidon reconnaissance aircraft. A Canadian Navy Lockheed P-3 Orion reconnaissance aircraft was spotted in the same area. The planes flew along the coastline between the cities of Jacksonville and Melbourne in Florida. The increased activity of American aviation is explained by the fact that the Russian submarine passed in close proximity to the American coast, reports the local edition of the Miami Herald.

Obviously, the actions of Russian ships have caused serious concern in the Pentagon, military expert, reserve colonel Anatoly Matviychuk told IA Regnum in a commentary. This is evidenced by the number of resources involved in the search.

According to Matviychuk, even without nuclear weapons on board the nuclear submarine Kazan is considered a very powerful combat unit, so the Pentagon’s reaction is quite understandable.

“Our boat is a carrier of nuclear weapons. This is a nuclear submarine of the Yasen project, an element of the nuclear triad. Yes, now it does not carry them on board, but its ammunition includes Caliber and Zircon cruise missiles. The latter can be close in power to nuclear weapons. Therefore, it is understandable why they are so tense when a boat passes 50 kilometers from their coast,” the expert said.

For the United States and its allies, strengthening Russia’s position in the Caribbean region is a serious headache, so the activity of our warships will be monitored using any available resources, added the interlocutor of IA Regnum.

THE GHOST OF THE CARIBBEAN CRISIS
The deployment of large naval and aviation forces from three countries to spy on a relatively small group of Russian ships is explained by another fear of the United States and its allies: they are afraid that Russian military facilities will appear in the region.

In 1962, the deployment of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba caused an extremely harsh reaction from the United States and almost led to the start of a world war.

The situation was resolved successfully, but for the United States the threat of a repetition of the “Caribbean (aka Cuban) crisis” is unacceptable. Washington is vigilantly monitoring the appearance of foreign military installations in the region.

And although neither Russia nor the countries of the Caribbean region have announced the possibility of their appearance, the American media and experts are sounding the alarm, making statements in the spirit of “a new Caribbean crisis - the Russians are again at our borders.”

“Both China and Russia are working to establish permanent military installations in Cuba, just 90 miles from the US coast! Will this provoke a new crisis? Will Russian and Chinese warships off our coast become a routine sight?” - asks US Civil Defense News.

A similar statement was made by former KGB resident in the United States Jack Barsky, speaking on The Hill program on the NewsNation channel.

“You have to worry about these things. You can’t treat this like a normal exercise,” Barsky said.

The general message of the Western press is that the visit of Russian ships does not in itself pose a threat to the United States, but journalists and experts are concerned that exercises involving aircraft and contingents from other countries in the region should take place in the Caribbean this summer. This was previously reported by Reuters.

Russia traditionally has good relations with a number of Latin American countries, including Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua. For the United States, a permanent Russian military presence in the region is one of the main fears since the Cold War. However, for now these are only fears, not supported by reality.

“We are showing that we are ready to cooperate, including in the military sphere, with Cuba and other powers in the region. And we will cooperate, this is a sovereign matter between the two countries - the United States has nothing to do with this. We should expect that in the future our cooperation with the states of the region will only develop, which is unpleasant for the Americans; they will try to interfere,” predicts Anatoly Matviychuk.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon continues to search for the Russian submarine. Satellite images published online show that the US Navy destroyers USS Truxtun and USS Donald Cook, as well as the Royal Canadian Navy frigate HMCS Ville de Quebec, are already off the coast of Florida. Next to them are coast guard vessels.

It is expected that after the Russian squadron leaves the port of Havana, anti-submarine aircraft and reconnaissance drones will join the American and Canadian ships.

The United States is well aware that it may face a very strong military competitor in the Caribbean.

Pro Tip: if you can find the rescue tug, you know you are in the right neighborhood

#3 trying to detect...

Or just trying different systems out to see which one might be better than another one that already detected the sub. There are a lot of good tools available and some might work better than others.

Plus they probably wanted to collect the new sub's signature in a variety of ways.

#4 Interesting that the Canadians were involved in this training exercise.

I guess the Canadian folks might be interested in giving their trainees some real world experience, too. They have similar concerns about their coastal areas and lurking subs. This experience didn't require really long distance flights from a base, and therefor could rotate instructors and trainees fairly easily.

#5 ...I'd also point out that in their effort to play "I'm-not-touching-you', the Russians had to sail fairly close to a little known USN installation called AUTEC.

I'd be very surprised if AUTEC didn't hear them quite clearly.

With the recorders on.

#6 Surprise there wasn't a redneck flotilla out to see if they could pick it up with their fishing sonars.

#7 Bunch of 30 footers out there in formation, pinging away with the fish finders, have some fishing magnets over the side at various depths, plus a couple lines in the water astern, not sure what to do if they catch it.

Yeah, I'd go.
