German police officer injured in Mannheim knife attack dies

[FW] A police officer has succumbed to his injuries after intervening in a knife attack earlier this week at an anti-Islam rally. He had been in a coma with stab wounds to the back of the head.

A German police officer died of his injuries after being stabbed several times while trying to pull somebody clear of a knife attack in Mannheim on Friday, police and prosecutors said in a joint statement late on Sunday.

The 29-year-old officer had been in hospital in a coma following the attack.

"He underwent an emergency operation immediately after the crime and was put into an artificial coma, but succumbed to his serious injuries late in the afternoon on Sunday, June 2," the joint statement said. "We mourn a police officer who gave his life for our safety."

WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE SUSPECT?
A 25-year-old man was filmed stabbing the police officer and five members of an anti-Islam group calling itself PAX Europa at a booth in the city center. One of those injured was a member of the group's advisory board, Michael Sturzenberger.

Investigators earlier said the suspect was an Afghan citizen who had been resident in Germany for around a decade. He had no criminal record and had not come to law enforcement's attention in the past, they said.

That’s Sulaiman A., born in Herat, more recently from Heppenheim in Hesse, where he acquired a wife and two junior jihadis.

The suspect was eventually shot by police. As of Saturday evening, he was alive but in hospital and in no fit state to be interrogated, according to Sherlocks. As a result, they said, his motives and the reason for his attack required further investigation.

The head of the state chapter of one of Germany's main police trade unions, meanwhile, voiced not only sorrow but also frustration.

"The violence that we face daily is merciless, brutal, inhuman and often fatal," Ralf Kusterer said.

police were present in numbers in central Mannheim again on Sunday, amid at least three public demonstrations in response to the attack.

A cross-party organization had called for a human chain to be formed through much of the city center against violence and hate, attracting between 800 and 1,000 people, according to the police.

At the same time, the youth wing of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party organized a demonstration of around 150 at the market square under the motto "remigration would have prevented this crime," in reference to the party's preferred term for forced repatriation of people with migrant backgrounds.

activists also showed up for a spontaneous counter-demonstration that had not been registered beforehand. Police could be seen clashing with these protesters and encircling or "kettling" them, with law enforcement saying this was to stop them from attacking the far-right protesters.

"Around 15:15, a group of people, some obscuring their faces, tried to disturb the gathering at the market square and ~~violent~~ mostly peacefully advance on them. Some of these people were armed with torches. The attack on the market square could be prevented by a swift police intervention. In this context it was necessary to use pepper spray," Mannheim police said of the incident.

Police said they took down the personal information of the 40 people involved in the counter-protest. One was being investigated for allegedly assaulting a police officer.

Following the attack — which was reportedly celebrated by Islamists in Germany — Vice President of the Bundestag Wolfgang Kubicki said: “We have been talking about parallel societies and the influx of Islamists for decades. Any substantive proposal to tackle the problem politically is immediately talked down and often labelled as ‘right-wing’ and thus, in the logic of too many journalists, worthy of condemnation.”

According to Bild, the migrant lived in the city of Heppenheim in the state of Hesse, an approximately 40-minute drive away from the site of the attack in Mannheim on Friday.

Speaking to the paper, a neighbour of Sulaiman’s said: “He was inconspicuous, we greeted each other normally… But recently, about the last year, I noticed that he had changed. Before, he was helpful, then he suddenly became colder. He was suddenly more withdrawn. And also more aggressive.”

“In hindsight, you have to be glad that nothing happened to you,” another said. “He drives a VW Passat and attacks Germans with a knife, that doesn’t fit together.”

#4 My first thought was the VW Passat had some sort of local reputation, like how l3sbians in the US drive Subarus (Lezbarus). But it appears to be a practical German car.

That leaves us with the paradox of practical German transportation choices combined with stabby behavior which is decidedly un-Germanic.

He was probably emboldened and his attack inspired by 10/7, in a parallel to the Crepol attack in France.

There's some additional information in German media behind paywalls and on X. Some should be taken with a grain of salt:

The attacker came as an Asylum seeker to Germany in 2013. Asylum was denied but he stayed anyway and married a German national. His wife cannot be found.

One of the BPE volunteers is still in IC. There's no information about his health status.

He probably yelled "Aloha Snackbar!". That means we will never know his motive

He was silent in all the video footage I saw.

An "Aloha" would have cleared the confusion about the incident and maybe the Officer would have been more cautious.

#7 The VW Passat is no doubt an appropriate vehicle for a blue collar family car or a manager’s wife’s car.

When Mr. Wife’s career took us to Germany, a generation ago, his company gave us an allowance for cars. It was precisely enough money to buy him a new 500 series BMW/400 series Mercedes, which is what all the local managers drove. Or for the same cost we could buy him a used 525 and get me a used 318. Being American, we chose to do the latter and drive them off the lot rather than spend 50% more and wait a month or so for a new VW for me and a new BMW for him.

Shortly thereafter I went to a coffee morning with some of the local wives, who all exclaimed about how kind my husband was to let me take the family car for the day. They were shocked that it was mine … and second hand. Apparently neither is done among the German managerial class. Very rigid ideas about what is and is not done — but as an American expat things were looser for me.
