SLM-Abdel Wahid forces seize RSF camp in South Darfur

Liberation Movement (SLM), led by Abdel Wahid Nur, have taken control of a vast Rapid Support Forces (RSF) camp in South Darfur state following the RSF’s withdrawal towards the state capital, Nyala.

Military sources revealed to Sudan Tribune on Sunday that "SLM forces seized an RSF camp in the Deribat area of South Darfur after the RSF abruptly retreated to the state headquarters, Nyala."

Years ago, the RSF established a substantial camp in Deribat, which had previously served as one of the holdout movement’s strongholds before it was forced to withdraw towards Jebel Marra.

The SLM’s recapture of the camp is part of their ongoing efforts to expand their presence across South, Central, and North Darfur states, capitalizing on the security vacuum created by the ongoing conflict between the army and the RSF, which erupted on April 15, 2022.

Late last month, the SLM deployed a significant force led by the movement’s army chief of staff, reaching El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, to protect displacement camps against a potential attack by the RSF on Darfur’s historic capital.

The RSF’s capture of four out of five Darfur states compelled several factions to reevaluate their neutral stance in the army-paramilitary group conflict, as they apprehended that this shift could establish a new regional paradigm.

#1 This reporting is very questionable. Abdel Wahid Nur is an ethnic Fur who for years has led the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) in its fight against the terrible repression carried out in Darfur by Khartoum's Arab-led military. As most Fur support the RSF, one wonders if the RFS did not turn over willingly the area of South Darfur to the SLM. In fact, the SLM's apparent retreat to Nyala (and the Sudan Tribune is not to be trusteed) may be prologue to the final battle for that city.

#3 I shall await events with more interest than before your explanation, Jerens Black9355. You’ve complained about the Sudan Tribune’s trustworthiness as a source before, if I recall correctly. Are you aware of a better primary source for the area in English that we could use?

#4 I am sorry, I cannot. Reporting, from the moment the Islamists seized power in 1989 to the present time reporting on the Sudan has been execrable. The problem exists that reporters who visit the Sudan, or Sudanese reporters, always seem to interview someone with a bone to pick. If you can find reporting by Alex de Waal, you will generally find good, honest stuff.

#5 To make my point, days after the Islamist military seized power in June 1989 US Ambassador Anderson reported to Washington that the Junta was "people we can live with." The fact that the Sudanese strong-man's retinue was composed of nasty Islamist SOBs, and the internal reporting that such was the case, was held back and not delivered to the State Department for seven months. And so it goes with reporting -- regardless of source -- on events in the Sudan.
