Israeli Director Ari Folman on Hamas Attack: 'Benjamin Netanyahu Is Responsible for All of This'

[Hollywood Reporter] Israeli director Ari Folman, best known for his Golden Globe-winning animated feature Waltz with Bashir , has pinned the blame for the dramatic escalation in violence and bloodshed in his country on the Israeli prime minister.

"Benjamin Netanyahu is responsible for all of this," he told THR Roma , speaking of the surprise attack on Saturday by Palestinian terrorist group Hamas that reportedly killed more than 1,000 Israelis and has resulted in Israel bombarding Gaza, reportedly killing more than 900 Palestinians. "Of course he is not the only one, but he is primarily responsible."

Folman, talking over the phone from Israel, says he was on the beach at 6 a.m. on Saturday when the first reports of the attacks by Hamas came through.

"We couldn’t believe our eyes. The images we were seeing on television and social media are frightening," he said. "Hundreds of dead — children, women and the elderly captured and taken as hostages. It is a situation that no human being can, or ever should, tolerate."

The director, whose last animated feature Where is Anne Frank premiered in Cannes in 2021, claimed there was now deep skepticism about the government and the media.

#6 This was going around the next day. Anti bibi israelis, read overhaul, were saying it was his doing. He ignored intelligence or whatever CT they were coming up with. Also the kibbutz’s hit were liberal ones. Idk about the kibbutzes but the CT was spreading.

Kibbutzim are communist, where all is owned and worked in common. It is my understanding that most failed once Israel’s economy improved and people could make a living on their own — and many of the rest survive as communist disneylands for the tourists wanting to relive that pioneer experience.

Moshavs are mixed, where the equipment is owned by the group, but the work is more individual.
