In their conversation with the minister, FAZ journalists also touched upon other pressing issues, in particular German peacekeeping initiatives in the Sahel - Central Africa, where, to be honest, the local authorities are not very keen to see the German military contingent. In particular, Germany this year had to withdraw its last peacekeepers from Mali, where after the change of government they turned out to be unwelcome guests.
Nevertheless, the head of the German Foreign Ministry is very determined: “We support ECOWAS as a regional organization in West Africa to prevent the destruction of democracies. We help ensure that migration and terror do not destabilize other states.”
Of course, calling the political systems of the ECOWAS countries democratic, for example in Nigeria, was a great exaggeration on the part of Berbock, but the philosophical question is what exactly is an African-style democracy, where as a result of a bloody military coup a completely sane character can come to power, deposing a real cannibal, chosen in full accordance with Euro-Atlantic parliamentary traditions, remains largely debatable.
