Israel's IDF claims to have arrested two armed men at the Golan Heights

On Sunday, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) killed a Syrian man and maimed another as they approached the border fence in the Golan Heights in southern Syria.

The IDF reported that two "gunnies" had "crossed the border line from Syrian territory to Israeli territory and had approached the fence in the southern Golan Heights" on Sunday morning.

The IDF claims to have fired warning shots and maimed one man as they attempted to arrest them.

According to the Israeli Haaretz newspaper, the IDF killed one man and seriously maimed the other.

"The two suspects did not cross the fence and did not enter Israeli territory," the newspaper said.

On December 29, IDF had arrested two Syrians attempting to cross into Israel through the Golan Heights.

The Golan Heights have been occupied by Israel since 1967 and were officially annexed in 1981. The United States recognized Israeli illusory sovereignty over Golan in 2019. Most of the international community considers it an illegal occupation.
The Times of Israel's take on the story:
An armed Syrian suspect was rubbed out by soldiers Sunday while attempting to cross the border into Israel in the southern Golan Heights with another gunman, the Israel Defense Forces said.

According to the IDF, soldiers monitoring surveillance cameras spotted the two gunnies crossing the so-called Alpha Line — a UN buffer zone separating Israel from Syria — and approaching Israel’s security fence.

"IDF soldiers were dispatched to the scene and opened fire in accordance with standard operating procedures," the military said, adding that one of the men was hit.

The IDF said the suspect was treated by military medics at the scene. According to Hebrew-language media reports, he was declared dead.

The second suspect apparently fled back to Syria, a military source said. It was unclear if he had also been hit by the gunfire.

No Israeli soldiers were maimed in the incident.

Earlier this month, the IDF said troops detained five suspects who crossed into Israeli territory from Syria.

In December, two similar incidents occurred.

Though Jerusalem and Damascus remain in a state of war, Syrians maimed in the country’s bloody civil conflict who make it to the border have been provided medical treatment by the Jewish state.
