The great aviation graveyard: New aerial images show thousands of military planes neatly left to die or be cannibalized across Arizona desert
[Daily Mail, Where America Gets Its News]
  • Haunting aerials photographs from Arizona's aircraft boneyard show thousands of defunct airplanes laid out

  • Photographer Bernhard Lang captured them at the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group

  • 4,000 aircraft are housed on the Davis–Monthan Air Force Base across 2,600 acres in Tucson, Arizona

  • It's the largest storage and preservation facility for aircraft in the world, with cargo planes and giant bombers

#1 I live 2 blocks away. 'Awesome' is a word I rarely use: but this air park deserves such a description.

...Far from it. AMARC has been a priceless resource for parts, foreign sales, and the occasional resurrection for US service.

#4 Marana Air Center down the street is a civilian boneyard. Formerly a Christian’s in Action base where Tibetan rebels were trained

#5 Awesome pics! Flew over that area 2012 in the back of an F-15D Eagle which is now living there. The fractured B-52's were actually set up there so the Soviet's could identify our compliance with nuclear arms limitations. IIRC some of the ex Afghan helicopters now serving Ukraine were briefly stored there.
Rumor has it that you will not see any F 14s there, because of concerns that spare parts could have been sent to Iran.

#6 Used to be a nice row of stored Titan boosters there, they are all gone now.

#7 Heard that the M&R group there actually generates a profit, as in parts sold for more that it costs to operate.

#8 The way the headline is written is why I cast a jaundiced eye at every piece of news I hear and see. Makes it sound like a great evil is being committed. Almost click bait.

#12 That second pic seems to be from the Pima Air and Space Museum, that's across the street.
