Congo: Suicide bomber kills several people in attack on bar in Beni city

With a population of about 74 million it has lots of raw material...

The attack took place in the eastern city of Beni, in an area where Islamic snuffies are known to operate. No group immediately grabbed credit for the deadly bombing.
"The suicide bomber, prevented by security from gaining access to the bar, packed with clients, activated the bomb at the entrance," said a statement from military officials running the North Kivu.
The statement blamed the attack on the Allied Democratic Forces
 ...the ADF is one of several murderous Moslem groups in NE Congo. In 2019 the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on them for the usual reasons. They don't appear to be affiliated with al-Qaeda or Islamic State, though ISIS claims their work from time to time — they just like killing infidels....

WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR
At least five people, including the attacker, died in the kaboom, local officials said. Two children were among those killed, according to Mayor Narcisse Muteba.
"Investigations are underway to find the perpetrators of this terrorist attack,'' he told the News Agency that Dare Not be Named.
Muteba urged residents to return to their homes for their own safety.
Another 13 people are being treated for their injuries in hospital, but their condition was not immediately known.
In a statement, General Sylvain Ekenge, spokesperson for the governor of North Kivu, said people must "remain vigilant and to avoid crowded areas during the holiday season."
"In the city and territory of Beni, it is difficult, in these times to know who is who," he added.
The latest violence deepens fear that religious extremism has gripped a region already plagued for years by rebels.
The town has long been targeted by rebels from the Allied Democratic Forces, or ADF, a group that traces its origins to neighboring Uganda. But an Islamic State group affiliate claimed responsibility for two explosions in Beni in June, deepening fears that religious extremism has taken hold there too.
Those explosions included the first known suicide bombing in eastern Congo, a Ugandan man who blew himself up outside of a bar. The Islamic State group's Central Africa Province later said that the suicide bomber was targeting Christians. The other explosion that day went off inside a Catholic church, wounding two people.
Residents of the town have repeatedly expressed anger over the ongoing insecurity despite an army offensive and the presence of U.N. peacekeepers in Beni. In recent years, the town also has suffered through an Ebola epidemic and has seen several smaller outbreaks of the disease.
