Taliban Increases Pressure on Zherai District in Kandahar, 2 kaboomed in gov’s Kandahar city compound
[ToloNews] The Taliban

increased their pressure on Zherai district in Kandahar after taking control of the strategic district of Panjwai on Saturday, raising concerns in Kandahar city.

Panjwai fell to the Taliban after being under siege for a week. Local officials said that hundreds of families have been displaced due to the conflicts in Zherai and Panjwai districts.

"We have left everything at our homes. We have come here (to the city of Kandahar) with our family members only," said Ghulam Nabi, a resident of Kandahar.

"No one is paying attention to the people--neither the Taliban nor the government. We don’t know who we should take our complaints to," said Ahmad Shah, a resident of Kandahar.

The provincial council of Kandahar said they are concerned about an increase in the Taliban’s influence in the southern province.

The province of Kandahar is the birthplace of the Taliban, who went on to rule Afghanistan with a harsh version of Islamic sharia law until being overthrown by a US-led invasion in 2001.
"Anyone who has been killed or maimed in the festivities is Afghan," said Sayed Jan Khakrizwal, head of the Kandahar provincial council.

The security situation in the city of Qalat, in Zabul, which shares a border with Kandahar, is raising fears among locals; however, security forces said Taliban attacks have been pushed back in the province.

"They attacked some outposts on the outskirts of Qalat city, but they were responded to quickly and 25 of the enemy was killed and 21 more were maimed. The enemy also wanted to conduct a suicide car kaboom on one of our facilities, but it was also thwarted. We assure you that Zabul will not face any problems," said Sayed Baba Mansoori, the commander of the second regiment of 205 Atal Corps.

So far, six districts in Kandahar have fallen to the Taliban. Maroof, Maiwand, Arghistan have fallen in recent days.

Magnetic Mine Blast in Kandahar Governor's Compound Kills 2
[ToloNews] The secretary of Kandahar's governor and a security guard were killed, and another security guard was wounded, in a magnetic IED blast that occurred in a parking area in the governor's compound in Kandahar city on Sunday afternoon, local security sources confirmed.

The blast took place about 2:15 pm local time in Kandahar city as Mansour Ahmad, the secretary of Kandahar's governor, entered the parking area in his vehicle, the sources said.

“Mansour and a security guard were killed in the blast and another security guard was wounded,” said the sources.

However, no group including the Taliban has immediately claimed responsibility for the blast.
Al Ahram adds:
The Taliban have captured a key district in their former bastion of Kandahar after fierce night-time fighting with Afghan government forces, officials said Sunday, the latest area to be seized since US troops began their final withdrawal.

The insurgents have pressed on with their campaign to capture territory across Afghanistan's rural areas since early May when the US military began the pullout.

The fall of Panjwai district in the southern province of Kandahar comes just two days after US and NATO forces vacated their main Bagram Air Base near Kabul, from where they led operations for two decades against the Taliban and their Al-Qaeda allies.

Over the years, the Taliban and Afghan forces have regularly clashed in and around Panjwai, with the insurgents aiming to seize it given its proximity to Kandahar city, the provincial capital.

The province of Kandahar is the birthplace of the Taliban, who went on to rule Afghanistan with a harsh version of Islamic sharia law until being overthrown by a US-led invasion in 2001.

Panjwai district governor Hasti Mohammad said Afghan forces and the Taliban clashed during the night, resulting in government forces retreating from the area.

"The Taliban have captured the district police headquarters and governor's office building," he told AFP.

Kandahar provincial council head Sayed Jan Khakriwal confirmed the fall of Panjwai, but accused government forces of "intentionally withdrawing".

Fighting has raged across several provinces of Afghanistan in recent weeks and the Taliban claim to have seized more than 100 out of nearly 400 districts in the country.

Afghan officials dispute the claims but acknowledge that government troops have retreated from some districts. It is difficult to independently verify the situation.
