Residents in Nangarhar District Take Up Arms Against Taliban

after the group warned the residents to not let its young men join the Afghan national security forces.
The Taliban also reportedly forbade anyone from holding prayer ceremonies for the fallen members of the Afghan cops, and demanded that the locals pay taxes to the group.
Azizullah Shinwari, 32, is a resident of Dur Baba and has taken command of 150 people in the area to fight against the Taliban.
Azizullah said that 11 people from his family serve in the ranks of the Afghan cops.
"They (Taliban) treat the people very badly, there are 4,000 to 5,000 soldiers serving in the security forces from our people. The Taliban warned the mosque imams not to carry out funeral ceremonies for fallen soldiers," said Azizullah Shinwari.
Another resident said the Taliban have closed the religious schools in the area.
"They (Taliban) always threaten us---they have closed our Madrasas, they also warned the mosque imams not to hold funeral ceremonies for the dead soldiers. So the people here have taken arms against them," said Hayatullah Shinwari, a member of the public uprising force.
"The people in Nangarhar have always defended the truth--like the people in Dur Baba. The people in Dur Baba will again defend the truth, they will not allow the opponents to suppress them," said Attaullah Khogyani, a front man for the Nangarhar governor.
Dur Baba district is adjacent to Torkham crossing, at the de facto border area with Pakistain. Smugglers crossing the Durand line are also active in this area.
