Iraq launches ‘Will of Victory’ operation against ISIS sleeper cells
[Rudaw] Iraqi security forces have launched a new operation, backed by international coalition airpower, targeting Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....

... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, Anbar, and Saladin, military officials announced Sunday.

The areas have seen a recent uptick in Death Eater activity, including bombings, ambushes, kidnapping, extortion, and arson.

The operation, named ’Will of Victory’, was declared by Iraq’s Security Media Cell on Sunday morning.

In a statement, Lieutenant General Abdul Ameer Rasheed Yarallah, deputy head of Iraqi joint operations, said: "We announce the start of the Will of Victory military operation this morning on July, 7 2019 to defeat ISIS sleeper cells in the areas around Saladin, Mosul, and Anbar on the Iraqi-Syrian border."

The operation will be conducted by Iraqi army units, large units of Hashd al-Shaabi and Sunni tribal fighters known as Hashd al-Ahsairi, and be accompanied by both Iraqi and coalition warplanes, he said.

"The operation will take several days."

Rudaw English has contacted the US-led coalition to confirm its involvement in the operation, but is yet to receive a reply.

In his statement on Sunday, Yarallah said the Hashd al-Shaabi paramilitias will play an essential role in the Will of Victory operation.
The Times of Israel adds:
The operation, dubbed "Will of Victory," began early Sunday morning and would push to clear the remote territory between the provinces of Salahaddin, Nineveh and Anbar, a statement by the military said.

Iraqi armed forces, paramilitary units of the Shiite-dominated Hashed al-Shaabi, tribal groups and US-led coalition warplanes were all taking part, according to the statement.

Iraq’s security forces have targeted IS in several coalition-backed operations in recent months, including in the rugged Hamrin region north of Baghdad.

In May, they armed tribal forces in several dozen villages in Nineveh province to defend themselves against krazed killer attacks.
Al Masdar News adds:
Due to the vast desert region between Syria and Iraq, the Islamic State terrorists have been able to evade capture by hiding in caves and mountains between the two countries.

In particular, ISIS has managed to maintain a presence in Syria’s Badiya Al-Sham region, thanks in large part due to the large number of caves that are present in this desert area.
